Well, if you consider sales taxes, extended warranty (24 months),
recycling (WEEE), localized manual, support hotline, lower shipment
cost, shipment within 1-3 days etc. as not neccessary, it might look
like ripping off... But note that you get more than a plain device
when ordering from a reseller than ordering directly in Taiwan or the
US. My impression is that people have the tendency to compare low US
prices without any add-ons with the EU prices which must include every
price component.

So, please read the previous mails where it has already been explained.

BTW: if you order in the EU from Switzerland, you can reduce the price
by the reseller's country VAT (e.g. 19% in Germany). But you may have
to pay your Swiss import tax. This may also apply if you order
directly from the US depending on your country's customs rules. So I
am not sure that you can legally get rid of any sales taxes.

Finally, what I really find strange is calling this ripping off. You
could also say the same for any product, because they do not sell at 0
USD. There are people who work hard to get devices from Taiwan into
your hands. Do you really expect them to be altruistic to do that work
for free? Free and Open does not necessarily mean Free Beer.

Another area of freedom: we also have free trade in most parts of the
world so you are free to choose the best location to buy.

Normally a burn-in test is used, where the device is in a high
temperature chamber to see if it survives. I guess the climatic
testing includes this and maybe also a cold chamber to verify that it
will not get condens damage.

This is what i'd like to do with my LUG and some other people near me,
take the name, make only one order of 10 Neos and then give the phones
to the people. Obviously the price will not be lowered a lot, but the
shipping costs are usually divided so in total it will cost less to
everyone. We always do the same with thinkgeek things or some CDs or DVDs.

That is not correct (at least here in Norway we do NOT pay VAT for the
shipping fees)

Conversely, in the UK we do. I guess it depends where the importer is
based.

To add my two pennies to this conversation, I don't like getting the
shaft any more than anyone else does - here in Rip Off Britain we
seem to get it worse than most Europeans (for instance I may consider
buying an ATX server case from Germany, as it may well be cheaper,
even with the currency exchange shipping, than buying locally).

But we must remember that an importer has to tie his own money up in
stock (money that could otherwise be earning interest for him) and
gamble with the currency exchange rates. If he buys when the dollar
is at 1:X and the exchange rate changes disfavourably to 1:Y, then
he has to swallow the difference on all his existing stock. A
reseller generally provides customer convenience - it's easy to order
online from someone local - support and so on, and has to make a
profit (otherwise he might as well go close his business and go work
for someone else).

I can't believe that Phones will be the only place to buy a
Moko, so if you don't like it, go shop somewhere else. Maybe if we
find in 6 months time that there's no way to buy in Europe without
paying 50% more than the dollar price, that's a time to complain, but
IMO it's a bit early for whinging.

Reading that i've noticed that Openmoko is still OpenMoko, so someone
should fix the middle uppercase M.
It's just an observation eh, no flame or anything bad in my mind!

Thanks for catching this! I will ask our designers to correct this ASAP.

Just on the subject of 'OpenMoko' vs 'Openmoko', I assume we should
change the former to the latter whenever we see a reference to it on
the wiki, or are there cases where 'OpenMoko' is still valid?

Cheers,
Federico

Also you'll notice the OpenMoko community mailing list... should that
be Openmoko?

1. Please change the subject when the topic changes

2. It is now officially Openmoko. Please feel free to help us change the
spelling in the wiki whenever you see it the wrong way, and please
point out to us if you find it spelled incorrectly in places you can't
change.

Future hardware options

2008-03-20 Thread Dale Schumacher
I believe that a low-power-use auxiliary processor would be EXTREMELY
valuable. There are LOTS of things that could run on a slower lower-powered
processor, greatly extending battery life. At any time the high-speed
high-power-use main processor can be fired up to handle the real heavy
lifting. Moving the monitoring functions off the main CPU would be a GREAT
improvement.

  - Add a small lowpower MPU like TI MPS430 to manage everything
seamlessly when main CPU is down. Stuff like motion sensors, wake
sources, battery management, maybe touchscreen, leds so there is an
always-on guiding hand in the phone that is consistent and reliable

Agreed here... the main constraint will be that if we want the display
active, we need to have the main CPU up to generate the video. But I am
hoping we will be able to pretty strongly in most cases have the CPU
power acting in sync to the LCM backlight power, in terms the CPU goes
into its lowest power standby mode as soon as the display is not lit, a
tap on the touchscreen or whatever else you would use to get the display
lit again also wakes the CPU.

I know it's probably too late, but will the screen on the FreeRunner be the
same as the one on the Neo 1973 ?
Because if that's the case - has anyone actually tried using the phone
outside, in broad daylight, in the sun ?
It might just be me, but I personally find it hard to find the buttons on the
screen due to the glare of the screen. Unless the reviewers only test the
phone inside an office, it's going to be difficult to sell the device to
general consumers, even once the software is finished.

I agree! One day I brought my Neo at school, going on foot to test the AGPS
reicever. It was *very* difficult to read on the screen!

Mhmmh... This might be a great problem... I heard/understood a
completely different thing about the Neo LCD!

Anyway I won't change my buying plans, but I'm quite disappointed about
this :/. I like sunny days! :D

dual mode OLPC style screen - one for the future?

2008-03-20 Thread JW
Did anyone think about the dual mode screen for OLPC and whether this
can fit with a mobile device... ?

Combined with a shaking motion (accelerometer) to change from color to
mono of course...

This would certainly make using outside more practical on sunny
days...(bad experience today with WM6/HTC)

Of course this is for the generation to follow Freerunner only

I didn't know that Openmoko has this corporate identity stuff, great. But it
is difficult to get the SansaSoft font. Is it possible to publish the logo
with the taglines (open. mobile. free.; Free Your Phone) as EPS, too?

Sven

Please give us a few days to get this posted. I've asked our designer to
 handle this.

My experience is that a support hotline helps LOTS when your device
dies and you need to get it replaced pronto.

But I do agree with you. VAT doesn't help me, either. I don't use any
of those silly services (like hospitals and roads) that taxes go to
support! I should be exempt from paying for them!!

And as for recycling! Why should I care about electronics in
landfills leaking lead mercury into the water supply? I won't be
around next century to worry about it!!

(Instead, you should realise that recycling is a European
requirement, and that all EU importers must agree to recycle their
products. If one has a dead Moko outside of warranty one will be
entitled to return it to the importer for recycling, rather than
landfill it - it is likely that Europeans who don't take advantage of
this service will soon have to pay to dispose of electronic items;
they won't be freely accepted at the local tip).
