RE: [SHR] GPRS / FATAL: Error inserting ppp_mppe

2008-12-16 Thread Ed Kapitein
Hi KaZeR,

My provider also only allow http(s).
If you happen to have acces to an ADSL connected linux box at home, it
is quiet easy to run proxytunnel
http://proxytunnel.sourceforge.net/
And you tunnel ssh over http(s) and use that to build an ppp link to the
ADSL connected linux box.
All protocols are then available, as if you would be at home.

Please check if this is in acordance with your providers acceptable use
policy ;-)

Kind regrads
Ed

So frameworkd is setting up three channels for itself and the
fourth should be for GPRS, but if ppp_generic isn't inserted
then it fails to bring up ppp0 and doesn't release the GPRS
resource. Since the first attempt (absent ppp_generic) uses
the fourth of four available channels and doesn't release it,
then you're done at that point - game over. After a fresh
reboot, though, if ppp_generic is inserted before GPRS is
attempted, you should be good to go.

I managed to get it to work, in the exact way you described.
 Thank you!

Now, since my provider only allow http traffic, i wonder how i'll be able to
 use agps..

Hi guys,

I am using omview, but I am pleased to hear there is another soft for
viewing images : we will have the choice !
In omview, the developer chose to change the display wether the image is
portrait or landscape. So in fullscreen, the image is always using the most
space it is possible too. Il like this choice. Sure, you have to turn the
freerunner for landcape images, but I think with such a small screen (good,
but small), it is better to view the image the biggest possible.

Well, as I said before, it may happen that an opkg upgrade will break
things. We can't, at this point of our development, plan an update

 work further on this topic.

As for vcard import, even if it doesn't exist right now, it should be

Trying to get support for some Neo setup problems...

2008-12-16 Thread john dowd
Unfortunately without the exact steps you took to get into this
situation, we're unable to determine the correct steps to get you out.

The most generic answers would be:

1). Reflash with your preferred distribution.
2). Boot from SD Card, access the flash memory and correct your mistake.

Although I'm not sure if '2)' is possible as I've never tried. I've only
ever come in from the other direction (modify SD from flash).

Potentially, if it is simply the x server not starting, you may still be
able to ssh in via usb and correct your mistake.

The exact steps? I used opkg to install the 2008 load. I was using the
phone as a wifi device to attach to my Access Point. I was more
interested in what was going on on my Access Point so I did not modify
the working wifi connection from my Neo (or any other things on the
Neo). At one point it just stopped booting properly. It displays the
openmoko splash screen for quite some time and then goes to the boot
loading screen showing that it's 45% loaded and never moves from that
point. After a few moments it displays the text lines from my previous
email.

My point is that without modifying files on my Neo, it starts to
behave differently.

I have even more strange behaviour to report. After several reboot
attempts (but no modifications to the Neo) it suddenly booted properly
and I was up and running again. This was true for the last few hours.
Now, it just started to behave badly once again. I am still testing my
Access Point and the Neo gets booted quite a few times. its plugged
into the power supply. Since I want the Neo to come up on its own I
don't use the power switch/Gui to turn it off. I bring up a terminal
and type in reboot.

Cheers!!

Black SOD for a change

2008-12-16 Thread Mikko Rauhala
I tried to figure out how to put this stuff into
http://docs.openmoko.org/trac/ticket/1841 but I can't find any way to do
so on the page even when logged in. Maybe it's got something to do with
the top saying
Warning: acct_mgr.web_ui.MessageWrapper object at 0xb6497e2c. So
I'll just complain here and you can stick it where you like.

Okay; two Freerunner units, one restores semi-okay, one's screen
typically goes all black after an otherwise successful restore (not
before showing the appropriate display for a moment though), doesn't
recover, doesn't seem to react
to /sys/devices/platform/s3c2440-i2c/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/0-0073/
backlight/pcf50633-bl/brightness. The device remains accessible via
usbnet. Trying to restart X doesn't seem to do much. (I've used it
without suspend until recently, since everything about that has seemed
fucked anyway for a long time.)

Tried with these images w. opkg upgrade with Timo's recommendation, at
least somewhat works on the other device:
http://lists.projects.openmoko.org/pipermail/fdom-development/2008-December/000192.html
Also tried 20081212-testing on the problem one, same deal, after
restore, there's maybe a second of UI visibility, then instant black.

What the fuck? BSOD for a change? Should I just bitch to my EU retailer
for warranty replacement since it's just affecting the one unit at least
here? Or is it just that the software side is too fragile still with
races upon races and the code just happens to work with the other device
by chance? WSOD fixes that don't quite work right? What to try to narrow
it down, what data to put out (and where, really)?

(Yeah excuse me, I'm getting somewhat frustrated after spreading moko
awareness 'round here and trying to keep optimistic, but problems upon
problems with critical functionality where one has no idea whether the
device is just trash already or if it's maybe possibly still salvageable
sometime, somewhere, if the drivers actually worked, *sigh*.)

[FSO] Building

2008-12-16 Thread Arigead
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello,
got my development machine now working and have build both the
kernel following Toolchain [1] and build the fso-image using the manual
section of [2], which points to the oe page [3].

As per [3] I got the openembedded with a git checkout

git clone git://git.openembedded.net/openembedded

I have two questions about all this. I've downloaded the above
openembedded repository. and it builds fine. But is there a
more up-to-date open moko repository? I know that the web page [3] states:

If you want to build FSO's unstable branch then include the following
two lines at the end of local.conf:

require conf/distro/include/fso-autorev.inc
require conf/distro/include/moko-autorev.inc

Is that all I need to do. Sounds so simple ;-)

My other question is that I built the kernel using toolchain [1]
instructions and my bitbake fso-image also built the kernel. I assume
that I can use the toolchain produced kernel and the bitbake produced
filesystem.

Can I tell Bitbake not to waste it's time building the kernel?

Thanks for any pointers

Re: paroli development

2008-12-16 Thread Mirko Lindner
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hej,

sorry it took a bit.

As there was not much response I thought this might be due to lack of
communication from my part. I have to admit paroli is rather well hidden
right now, but I am working to change that.

So far I am happy to say, that after some hard work and great help by
many of the Openmoko team, we managed to merge paroli and tichy to a
proof of concept version, which currently is available as a single
package version under the name of tichy.

The package can be found in the testing repository and installed via
opkg. It does allow basic telephony, messaging and contacts
administration. However, it is by no means stable. We combined 2
approaches that still need to find their boundaries in their new marriage.

One of the results of the rather turbulent honeymoon is that you have to
fiddle 2 small things in the package as not all last minute changes were
equally distributed across all files ;)

Once opkg install tichy is processing, It will create desktop files
which allow you to start tichy and the applications. For the dbus
service to work you need to add 2 files.

add:

!DOCTYPE busconfig PUBLIC -//freedesktop//DTD D-BUS Bus Configuration
1.0//EN
 http://www.freedesktop.org/standards/dbus/1.0/busconfig.dtd;
busconfig
policy user=root
allow own=org.tichy.launcher/
allow send_path=/Launcher/
allow send_destination=org.tichy.launcher/
allow receive_sender=org.tichy.launcher/
/policy
/busconfig

to /etc/dbus-1/system.d with the name tichy.conf

and

[D-BUS Service]
Name=org.tichy.launcher
Exec=/usr/bin/tichy-launcher
User=root

to /usr/share/dbus-1/system-services with the name
org.tichy.launcher.service

We hope to improve our coordination to minimize those small but yet
fatal glitches, but 12000km and 7hrs distance can be rather tricky ;)

Once you fixed the two files you should press the TLauncher icon on your
desktop. It will need to work a bit, depending on the network and such
up to 25 sec actually. Than you can use the tele, people, messages or
i/o icon to launch any of the applications. In the miserable event that
it crashes simply press the TLauncher icon again, copy the error message
from /tmp/tichy.log into your favorite mail-client and pop us a mail ;)

Please to not be scared by unexpected colors or a rather incomplete
design. We focused on the interaction of the different parts and
languages to see if it was possible to build a scalable phone-stack in
python and efl which would against all odds not make its user wait for
too long. Certainly you will have to wait every now and again, but we
are confident we can solve these issues and provide a set of tools that
will allow for easy and fast development.

As I wrote this package has proof of concept status and we are currently
trying to define our next steps in order to see how we will proceed, but
we are happy to have reached this point and are thirsty for more ;)

Stay tuned for updates!

/mirko

2008-12-16 Thread joakim
I want to customize Illume like this:

- the AUX button will pull down the top-shelf. The top shelf will show

- The top-shelf will have a screen-lock button, similar in function to

How can this be achieved?

There's no contact database, as we use frameworkd. So right now the
contact database is your SIM. We're waiting for opimd integration to
work further on this topic.

As for vcard import, even if it doesn't exist right now, it should be

jeremy.mcnaugh...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi,

Just wanting to bring some balance to your (otherwise respectful)
comment. Not affiliated to OM, blabla, things like that.

I just wanted to chime in on this. I bought the phone not realizing
how useless as a phone it would be. And now it's been months, and I
still can't rely on it as a phone.

Well, maybe it's because I bought the phone for later, still
planning to use my old Nokia as a regular phone until Neo's ready, but
I'm all in all pretty surprised. In a good way.

Of course there's been ups and downs. Every now and then, I tried a
new image/distro, and found it awesome at first. As days go by and
bugs occurs, I've been less and less enthusiastic, until I tried a new
one.

With the release of QtExtended 4.4, I tried to put my old Nokia back
into the drawer, and use the Neo as my main phone. That whole process
was eased thanks to my business dedicated phone, so I wasn't
completely left out in the cold even when QTE failed. But for the
first time, I was able to put and get calls, without my callers/ees
complaining all the time about the echo. The sound wasn't that nice,
but it's a cellphone after all, and not so long ago every single
cellphone sounded like that.

Due to some rather irritating bugs in QTE (high-pitched loud noises
from the loudspeaker when answering a call - quite disturbing for
co-workers - and duplicating text messages), I tried to move to FSO.
And, quite frankly, I'm starting to believe I'll keep this one for a
while. I've witnessed no echo nor buzzing yet, been able to send and
receive text messages without my them mating like rabbits on viagra -
sorry for your antispams, guys) and so on. Of course, I didn't try
GPRS nor WiFi, and GPS isn't working as well as it could (well, not at
all for now, but I'm investigating it). But at least I can keep it
running 24h/day, ssh it and play with it when I feel like it, and
still having a working and (as far as I can tell) reliable phone.

Until then it sits on a shelf, only getting used every few weekends to
test a few images. I'll keep checking the wiki and the lists to see
how things are going. But I want to write apps, not troubleshoot
 echoes and battery problems.

I don't know how much time you have, but things are way better when
you try it for real than when you read about it. The idea one can get
from reading that list is that nothing is working and everyone bitter.
From real life testing, it's not that wrong, at least not for
everybody. I understand mileage may vary upon several factors
(provider, SIM model, Neo revision, lunar month, so on), but for me
it's worth the try.

I think what Openmoko Inc. really needs is better community relations.
It seems that a lot of the dissatisfaction in the community stems
from a feeling of being left out of the loop. As a casual member of
the community, it is really hard to keep track of what is going on
 with the project.

Once again, it's easier when you're participating, even when it's only
testing. Had a few problems posted here, and got some nice feedback,
even from OM Inc. people. It really should be hard to keep track when
not in it.

Looking from the outside, it really seems as though the Openmoko Inc.
team is working in isolation, cathedral style.

Maybe you should start looking from the inside. The door is wide open :)

I would love to see company engineers and developers in constant
dialog with the community about the work they are doing on a daily
basis. Many open source projects have a blog Planet site, where you
can read entries from developers explaining the bugs they are fixing
and features they are designing and implementing. This sort of daily
interaction would beat a weekly single page of point form notes hands
 down.

Well, I'd rather see them improving OM than in constant dialog. What's
most people has been ranting about is the closed fashion of the
_design_. And that might be true, but I'm not involved at all in that
part (well, even less involved than in the other parts, to be fair)
and couldn't notice it.

Not that I don't like reading regular updates from developers, but I
much prefer running regular updates of their software ;)

Sometimes it seems as though Openmoko is depending on community
members to fill roles such as maintaining the wiki. For the past view
months that I've been reading the wiki and monitoring pages there has
been a lot of stale, outdated and confusing information. At various
points it has been impossible for me to figure out which kernel to use
with which filesystem for a particular distro release within the
amount of time I can allot to Openmoko.

That's a good point. It's hard to guess what to use and how. But then
again, there are so many options out there (FSO, SHR, QTE, ASU and co,
Android, ...), with most of them not depending on Openmoko, that it's
might be hard for them to maintain documentation about it. Keeping up

Of course, not. The latex is the best material for shrouding everything
that would go inside your body, except for latex-allergics. If you are
going to inser something on your body that is not specifically designed
for that, condoms are the best choice to avoid infections.

Re: No more optimization team

2008-12-16 Thread Jeremy McNaughton
Hi,

I just wanted to chime in on this. I bought the phone not realizing
how useless as a phone it would be. And now it's been months, and I
still can't rely on it as a phone.

I was, and still am, excited about writing some python apps for the
phone. But frankly I don't see myself doing that until the phone
actually works.

Until then it sits on a shelf, only getting used every few weekends to
test a few images. I'll keep checking the wiki and the lists to see
how things are going. But I want to write apps, not troubleshoot
echoes and battery problems.

I think what Openmoko Inc. really needs is better community relations.
It seems that a lot of the dissatisfaction in the community stems
from a feeling of being left out of the loop. As a casual member of
the community, it is really hard to keep track of what is going on
with the project.

Looking from the outside, it really seems as though the Openmoko Inc.
team is working in isolation, cathedral style.

I would love to see company engineers and developers in constant
dialog with the community about the work they are doing on a daily
basis. Many open source projects have a blog Planet site, where you
can read entries from developers explaining the bugs they are fixing
and features they are designing and implementing. This sort of daily
interaction would beat a weekly single page of point form notes hands
down.

It looks like the future phone GUI we'll be using is Paroli, which is
part of Tichy. Tichy looks really interesting, and will likely be a
major part of the Openmoko development platform. If that's the case,
why has there been so little information about either project?

Openmoko you have this community of users who are still enthusiastic
about your product. Do yourself a favour and learn how to keep us
interested by opening the lines of communication. Look at other major
open source projects that have successfully cultivated active
communities around their products. How did they do it? Ubuntu's
community didn't happen by accident, it happened by design.

 Sorry, I'm not explaying myself...

#1024 is annoying me a lot for two reasons

 1) If I want to receive calls with phone suspended, I have only one option:
 SHR
As SHR is based in FSO, I suppose you're right, FSO should also work. But only
SHR works out of the box. I have tried FSO M4, but I haven't tried to force
 calypso to never deep sleep.

 2) Not deep sleeping, power consumption is not optimal. I know continuously
reconnecting consumes more power, but we're consuming more than necessary.
And my battery lifetime is not the best in the world ;)

I can live without PIM, without calendar, even without Doom ;), but I do need
 GSM telephony for my work.
Having this bug solved, probably I could use FR as daily phone, and be more
active on community. I think a lot other people are on the same situation as
 me.

But, as you can read on Steve Mosher's answer, there is one person actively
working on this bug. Great news!

Essentially the Neo is now a brick. I'm wondering where to go from
here. I have installed 2008 version of the s/w on the phone.

I *might* just have the same problem. I tried opkg-upgrading my FDOM (OM2008.9)
to testing, and now booting stops with the same messages the original poster has
seen, plus the same vor vcs1 and vcsa1. Haven't found a way to fix this,
unfortunately, as ssh doesn't seem to be running. The kernel however is still
alive, responds to pings and prints out information about the changed power
state when plugging in the charger or the usb cable.

Konstantin

What is the most interesting thing you have seen the Freerunner used for?

new sim(ATT:SKU 71247)

2008-12-16 Thread Mathieu Dube
Hi,
I just got my neo freerunner and I got a sim from ATT, its a 3G the
sku is 71247. Its not in the list here:
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Carriers/ATT

It fits on the contacts physically but it only says Registering... when I
boot up.

Should I update the firmware as explained here:
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/GSM/Flashing ?

Or would it be better to ask att to provide me with an older sim card?

thanks

When I use a 71234O 4122 sim card it is working.

What are my options now ?
1. sim card seating: As specified in a number of places I am still trying to

2. GSM flashing as in http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/GSM/Flashing I am not

Umm It's not too hard to work out actually.

For the Neo 1973:
Find 3 current owners who aren't using it and make them an offer.

For the Neo Freerunner:
Wait til GTAv3 is released and then watch as the price of second hand
Freerunners plummet as all the developers and hackers upgrade...
For better or for worse, they all will. there's community for you.

Well... there's the answer. Don't ask me when GTAv3 will be released

is it possible in u-boot to tune/test different glamo sd settings (clk, power) ?

is there any chance to use this (such a) card _reliably_ inclding u-boot
(not only with kernel parameters like glamo_mci.sd_post_power_clock=100) ?

thanks for any help!

I wouldn't assume this is a kernel issue, but if you think it might be,
you should try andy-tracking kernel from git or here:
http://people.openmoko.org/andy and see if it changes the behaviour.
The suspend and resume action is very different in these 2.6.28 kernels.

I have the same thing with the older kernel. The device is working
after resume, but the screen is black. On the contrary, the newest
andy-tracking fails to resume in the first place :-), the phone is just
dead until I pull out the battery and boot again. Any hint on how to
get a usable kernel? One that gives 2 days of battery life as someone
reported would be best :-)

Can I tell Bitbake not to waste it's time building the kernel?

Try adding

ASSUME_PROVIDED += virtual/kernel or
ASSUME_PROVIDED += linux-openmoko

to your local.conf.

If it goes through (might not work because of missing module packages), you
will have missing modules in your rootfs though.

(Nearby: A kernel build is quick... I would just let bitbake build it. You
don't have to use it)

Essentially the Neo is now a brick. I'm wondering where to go from
here. I have installed 2008 version of the s/w on the phone.

I *might* just have the same problem. I tried opkg-upgrading my FDOM
 (OM2008.9)
to testing, and now booting stops with the same messages the original poster
 has
seen, plus the same vor vcs1 and vcsa1. Haven't found a way to fix this,
unfortunately, as ssh doesn't seem to be running. The kernel however is still
alive, responds to pings and prints out information about the changed power
state when plugging in the charger or the usb cable.

It's really hard to say. I know first hand that an opkg upgrade to
testing can cause this. The original poster was having other issues
aswell however.

I'd say if your problems aren't intermittent then you may just have a
bad upgrade. I'm tempted to think the dropbear problem is back aswell,
as I overwrote all config files, the default a while back prevented ssh
access except for localhost? or something silly. I remember having to
modify the startup script via the om terminal app. Either way, I think
using a testing image before opkg upgrading via testing is probably a
better option. I haven't tried the FDOM script ... at all ... or FDOM
for that matter ... but I imagine it would apply to testing?

do you use espeak with speech-dispatcher?

I use it with speech-dispatcher and navit speaks german. You just have
to set the language before starting navit (LANG variable).

   - the AUX button will pull down the top-shelf. The top shelf will show

   - The top-shelf will have a screen-lock button, similar in function to
 the current behaviour of AUX.

   How can this be achieved?

I think you should start messing around with the theme.

Install the tools required to decompile and recompile E17 theme code:
  opkg install libevas-saver-png edje-utils cpp cpp-symlinks
  libembryo-tests

Decompile the theme, and edit the edc file:
  cd /usr/share/enlightenment/data/themes

 Better yet than the above:
   mkdir -p ~/.enlightenment/data/themes
   cd ~/.enlightenment/data/themes
   cp /usr/share/enlightenment/data/themes/illume.edj .

 Then proceed as written:
  edje_decc illume.edj
  cd illume
  vi freerunner.edc

Not completely sure that's the right place but seems logical to me.
  Correct me if I'm wrong.

The only mistake, IMHO, is to change the default file needlessly when
you can change a local copy which will override the system one, even if
 the system one is upgraded.

If you want to revert, it'll be also quite easy, just remove your local
 version from ~/.enlightenment/data/themes

actually ~/.e/e/themes - but yes. right idea :)

i do hope openmoko succeeds. it would be a shame that a great concept like an
open phone you really can hack any way you like (be you a qte person, or you
like your android, or you prefer your x world with windowmanagers you choose -
or write yourself) and know that the producer is NOT putting barriers between
you and getting the stuff you want - not artificial ones like closing
documentation, putting signed bootloaders that require signed kernel/os
images etc. etc., simply technical ones that are a pure bi-product of the
hardware as-is. this should not die. it holds promise for the community and
many others besides. so here's thumbs up to om so in the future the promise of
an open phone doesn't die with the freerunner. :)

Depending on the feature set that can cut both ways. It could also be a case
