Since a few weeks i'm using fso-gpsd without any big problems so far.
The only problem is that the TTFF (time to first fix) is always 1
minute and sometimes it needs quite a lot of time. The only solution
for me to be sure to get a fix within 30 sec is to use the agps tool
which downloads the almanac and ephemeris from ublox for my region.

yes, I tried integrating hot-start into ogpsd, but somehow I had
problems with supplying ephemeris. Just some days ago I noticed
something that made me think the culprit is still the time calculation.
The SVs that zhone claimed were visible suddenly made a jolt and were
positioned differently. It was more than one, so it wasn't just one
almanac that got updated. I'm not completely sure, though, didn't look
 too closely.

The problem is, that the gps chip doesn't have any internal memory why
it needs to download all relevant gps data every time it is powered
up. So i thought if it is possible to save the relevant gps data
before shutting down the gps which can be done by fso-gpsd or kernel
automatically. Than after starting the gps fso-gpsd/kernel feeds back
the data to speed up the TTFF. This would be the same way most gps
   receivers work.

It actually does have memory, but lacks a backup battery which is
supposed to power the memory of the GPS while main power is off.

Could this power be taken from the FR battery, for a while? I assume the
gps unit draws less current when it only keeps the memory alive and
don't track.

Restarting the gps software (or stopping one app and then run another)
is sort of common, we could avoid startup time. Something like: when gps
becomes unused, stop it but keep the memory powered for 10min in case
the user wants to use it again soon. Turn it compeltely off to save
power after that, or if the phone suspends.

ogpsd already stores and restores almanac, GPS/UTC timeoffset and
approximate last position. It's not restoring ephemeris because I had
weird problems with that (TTFF increased to several minutes).

The manual claims down to 5 seconds TTFF if you supply ephemeris and a
  precise timepulse.
Without the timepulse TTFF is supposed to be around 24 seconds.

Can the weird problems be avoided by not providing the time pulse? 24s
is better than the current 1-2 minutes.

Also, the gps can get weird problems while powered. When I drive through
a tunnell, it looses the fix. (As expected!) When emerging from tunnels,
it gets a new fix reasonably fast, usually.
But there is a double tunnel where I live, that really makes problems
occationally. I drive through the first, and loose the fix. The distance
to the next is _slightly_ shorter than the time usually needed to regain
the fix. Then I get into the next tunnel. Sometimes, this results in
10min or so to get a fix again after emerging from the second tunnel.
Looks like this unit does not like being interrupted when it almost gets
a fix.

What is a good step by step howto to configure GPRS in SHR unstable?
I've managed to figure out the settings for my provider but am a bit
lost via the wiki on how to set this up. Especially on where to
configure the provider details.

My provider is able to send via SMS the GPRS configuration, However,
this needs functionality on both the device side to pick up these
settings and probably on the side of the provider too.

I've already been able to choose Neo 1973 as device type in my online
account at my provider (Telfort Netherlands). I'm sure they are willing
to implement settings for Neo FreeRunner.

Does anyone have experience with this? Do we need to provide them with
special FreeRunner settings or can they simply copy the 1973 profile?

Low earpiece volume (Was: Questions about the usability of GTA02)

My main problem with the FR at the moment is that the volume in the built-in

indoor environment, but on a busy street I can hardly hear that someone is
talking on the phone at all, and in a room with other people talking in the
background, it is difficult to hear the person at the other end.

Just wondering: What happens if you run this as root during a call (on a
distrubution which uses FSO)?

# (sleep 5 echo -e 'AT+CLVL?;+CLVL=255\r' sleep 1) | mickeyterm

You should see output something like this:

-
read history from /root/.mickeyterm_history
--- Mickey's Term V2.9.1 @ /dev/pts/2 ---
AT-Command Interpreter ready
AT+CMEE=2;+CRC=1
OK
AT+CLVL?;+CLVL=255
+CLVL: 175

OK
CTRL-D
Good Bye.
-

It should report the current modem output volume (175 here) and then set
it to 255, which is the loudest possible on the TI Calypso.

In your /usr/share/openmoko/scenarios/gsmhandset.state, what are the
values of these controls?

1) Control 4 Speaker Playback Volume (LOUT2VOL and ROUT2VOL in [2]).
2) Control 6 Bypass playback volume.
3) Control 52 ROUT2 Phase (should be Inverted).
4) Control 92 DAPM Handset Spk (should be true).

(Bypass refers to the tree lines at the top of the drawing in [2] while
side tone refers to the line that goes right from MIC MUX in the lower
left of the same drawing.)

There's also the possibility of using a larger speaker:

# alsactl restore -f /usr/share/openmoko/scenarios/gsmspeakerout.state

   Of particular interest are:

1) Control 3 Headphone Playback Volume (LOUT1VOL and ROUT1VOL in [2]).
2) Control 6 Bypass playback volume.
3) Control 87 DAPM Stereo Out (should be true [3]).
4) Control 92 DAPM Handset Spk Switch (should be false [3][4]).
5) Control 93 Amp State Switch (should be true).
6) Control 94 Amp Spk Switch (should be true).

[1] https://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Neo_Freerunner_audio_subsystem
[2] https://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Neo_1973_audio_subsystem#ALSA_Channels
[3] Mine, as installed from the Debian distribution, has true/false
swapped. Both of control 87 and control 93 must be set to true to enable
sound from headphones or the large speaker.
[4] Or set it to true to use both speakers and check control 4.

My impression is that this is a hardware limitation, and that even with max
volume from the GSM chip to the audio codec (CLVL=255), and maximum Alsa
volumes, the volume won't be high enough from the earpiece.. I think the
only way around this is to use a Bluetooth headset, but I don't think the
Bluetooth headset profile works in the version of the bluetooth stack
(bluez-3) that's on the Freerunner now.

Sound from the modem can be captured, so it ought to be possible to
increase volume in software with e.g. sox and the 'gain', 'loudness' or 'vol'
effects.

I decided to try SHR also. I like it. There's no echo! But there are
still some small problems, that are already mentioned in the other SHR
thread. And a few problems that aren't mentioned:
 1. If I activate the silent profile, the phone still rings.
 2. After using the phone few hours and making some calls the phone
doesn't ring anymore, it only vibrates. After rebooting it rings
 again.
 3. At some point, the phonelog application just stopped working. It
 doesn't start. I didn't do anything and I didn't change anything, I
just made a few phonecalls. When starting it, it gives me an error
saying, that there's no error message. When starting it from command
 line, it says:
TypeError: float() argument must be a string or a number
I thought rebooting wil fix this, but it didn't.

I tried to use gprs using Joel's instructions, but it gives me the error:
 ActivateContext failed: org.freesmartphone.GSM.MUX.NoChannel

Have you solved this? Or anybody else?

Posted a request in OpenMoko community list, but no answer. Seems like
nobody notices gprs not working in shr-testing or everybody has it
working or nobody uses gprs on shr-testing.

[SHR] Frameworkd RequestResource patch

2009-02-12 Thread Dylan Reilly
I do not know if this is addressed upstream or not, but there is a a
bug in the SHR unstable frameworkd [1] that caused resources requested
via RequestResource to never be released if there are no idle timeouts
set in frameworkd.conf. The patch [2] applied to [3] addresses the
issue without requiring those values to be set in the config file
(which is the default).

If there as a better place to send such things please let me know.

As a result, one can have pretty nice functionality with suspend and
resume with two additional rules in
/etc/freesmartphone/oevents/rules.yaml:

-
# Disable suspend while USB plugged in.
while: PowerStatus()
filters: Not(HasAttr(status, discharging))
actions: OccupyResource(CPU)
-
# Auto suspend.
trigger: IdleState()
filters: HasAttr(status, suspend)
actions: Suspend()

The least I can do is to motivate people ;)

Let me now describe positive side-effects of exposing code in git on
github (instead of SVN on projects.om)

Now anyone of you can

* clone pythm fork (better off from Dylan's one, although I will
keep mine also in sync with his)

* do anything you like -- fixes, enhancements, whatever; and regularly
commit your changes into your local git clone of pythm (nobody will
see those yet since you would be committing into your local copy)

* if you decide that your changes worth exposing and contributing for
others to be used, instead of sending patches anywhere, just

  - get yourself account on github (for our purposes free account is
sufficient)
  - fork Dylan's or mine repository
  - add your fresh fork as an additional remote in your local pythm
clone
  - push your changes into your fork on github

VoilĂ  -- now everyone can see your changes, cherry pick or merge them
into his own repository (like mine or Dylan's). That really allows to
facilitate community project ;-) and pythm is imho very well worth such
an effort.

2) I uploaded a new version to opkg.org. I double-checked this opkg
and it is installing fine for me. Changes include:
* Add ability to use RequestResource in newer FSO to stop device
suspend during playback. This is now the default. The suspension of
Enlightenment suspend is still supported by changing suspend_iface
in the config file.
* Fix python execution error when gstreamer fails to play a media file
and the exception is being reported.
* Internal code clean-up.

 Hi Dylan,

i installed it on quite clean shr unstable. Installs ok but uses
mutagen for wrong python version. after startup i cannot select any
songs as the file dialog is grayed out...:

  opkg install http://www.opkg.org/packages/mutagen_svn-4350_arm

 I moved mutagen from /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/mutagen
 to /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/mutagen

 pythm then starts:

 r...@om-gta02 ~ $ pythm
No Locale found, falling back! Error was:[Errno 2] No translation file

I haven't looked for python-pyalsaaudio as it is not in shr repos but
this seems to be the issue.

 P.

Yes, seen this just the same day. But when the fix will appear in the
shr-unstable branch?
