Re: [Om2009] testing Release 3
First of all thank you for hard work Angus. I'd love to test om2009 but there are several questions I have to clarify before. The problem is that right now I have to use om2008.12 as my daily phone (this experience brings new depth into definition of annoyingly crappy software but that's not the point). So before switching to om2009 TR3 I need to make sure that there are no regressions which would make my life with FR even worse (it's hard to imagine but it's possible). The very essential things I expect from om-whatever are: - send and receive calls to\from phones in international format e. g. starting with + like +790934534... - read and create contacts both in English and Russian from both sim card and internal db - send and receive sms both in English and Russian - lock and unlock screen by pressing aux button I guess it's pretty common expectations and it sometimes work somehow with om2008.12 So my question is - are above mentioned features available on om2009 TR3 out-of-the-box? Is there are some packages I need to install to achieve it or some configuration tweaks needed? If so - how to migrate contacts db and sms message archive from om2008.12 to om2009? As far as I understood it's recommended to flash om2009. Is it possible to use sd instead? If so - where can I find instructions on how to do it with om2009 TR3? Going a bit further, is there plan to start supporting normal upgrade via something like opkg upgrade since om2009 TR x? There are also certain features lacking in om2008.12 which I'm really looking forward to see in om2009 in addition to basics mentioned above: - correctly receive call\sms in suspend mode e. g. wake up and work - alarm clock working in suspend mode - wi-fi with wpa2 working out-of-the-box - some media player supporting ogg and mp3 It's not clear (maybe I miss something - feel free to point me to appropriate info) if it is in om2009 TR 3. Any help would be greatly appreciated. best regards, Max. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Re: First release of Enscribi - handwriting recognition input method
Hi Olof, any chance of having english support added to this? Otherwise (as a non-hacker) can I contribute anything that'd support you in adding english support? Russ 2009/2/14 Olof Sjobergh olo...@gmail.com Hi, This is to announce the first release of Enscribi, a new handwriting recognition input method I've been working on. The main focus, and the only thing supported for now, is writing Japanese and Chinese characters (and numbers, but numbers only won't get you far...). It uses the excellent Zinnia recognition engine for the actual recognition. If anyone is interested, please take a look. There's a project page at http://olofsj.github.com/enscribi/ with screenshots and some more information. There are packages on opkg.org for trying it out (only tested on FSO milestone 5). No, we are Golden Delicious Computers (aka The Handheld-Linux Shop). What's the procedure of ordering free battery for phone fixed on buzz-fix party? best regards, Max. Generally you can choose between looking if someone is organizing a buzz-fix party or you can send your device to us for the rework service. Both approaches have pros and cons. E.g. during a party you meet nice people and can take your device back immediately. But you may have to travel to distant location - and the main requirement is that there must be someone who organizes this at all. The rework service results in a much longer time without a freerunner but is just as far away from you as the next postal office or courier service. The free battery is a courtesy from Openmoko and is included in both approaches. OM sends a set of spare batteries to the one who organizes a party. He hands them out to you during that party. The only thing you need is stroke data for all the letters, which are not so many for English. Then it would be possible to make a new theme for English input as well (the letters are not as large and complicated as for Japanese and Chinese, so you can get away with a smaller drawing area for each letter). So what's needed is stroke data for all the letters. I'm currently experimenting with writing a stroke editor so it's easy to add new characters. When this is done it would be quite simple to add new characters. You'd just have to draw all the letters. I'm currently on a business trip and wan't be able to work in it for now, but when it's ready I'll post info about here on the mailing list. At best, I'd say a few weeks from now, but that depends on how much free time I get. Otherwise (as a non-hacker) can I contribute anything that'd support you in adding english support? Hi, There's nothing stopping adding english support. I thought about adding it myself. [FSO/SHR] ogpsd/fso-gpsd: can't get 4Hz sample rate
Hi all. I'm used to putting the GTA02's ublox chip into 4Hz sample mode for my research projects, but ever since I started using FSO and derivatives I can't get it to spit out anything other than 1Hz samples - so I just stop fso-gpsd, configure the chip at my own will, and read directly from /dev/ttySAC1. However, this is the unfriendly way to do it, and I'd like to integrate this option with FSO. So I found the initialization sequence inside /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/framework/subsystems/ogpsd/om.py and added this to the end of def initializeDevice, just before the self.huiTimeout = gobject.timeout_add_seconds( 300, self.requestHuiTimer ): # increase sample data rate to 4Hz: self.send(CFG-RATE, 6, {Meas : 0x00fa, Nav : 0x0001, Time : 0x}) Unfortunately, it doesn't change anything. gpspipe -r will still put out a single set of messages per second, even though the GPS chip is (hopefuly) configured for 4 sets per second. When used with the original gpsd in other older distros, this didn't happen; gpspipe -r outputs whatever the the gpsd delivers. So the problem is most likely in FSO's ogpsd implementation. Sending a u-blox binary string into /dev/ttySAC1 with the same config message while fso-gpsd is working also doesn't work out (I've tried many times just in case I'm racing with the framework and messages get mangled). I've combed the framework code in that folder trying to find any 1s cycle hardcoded, but everything looks as it should: event-triggered by available data. So the 1M€ question is: where the heck is this 1s polling cycle defined? How can I get the ogpsd framework to output 4 samples per second instead of 1? Any hints will be appreciated. Thx, V. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Hi Max Thanks Risto for answering some of these. On May 13, 2009 04:18:47 am Max wrote: First of all thank you for hard work Angus. Hey I just put the lego together you should be thanking Mirko, and the FSO team. To get it you will need to install Om2009 and the bring that package in from unstable or wait for TR4 - lock and unlock screen by pressing aux button AUX button has other uses I guess it's pretty common expectations and it sometimes work somehow with om2008.12 So my question is - are above mentioned features available on om2009 TR3 out-of-the-box? Not yet Is there are some packages I need to install to achieve it or some configuration tweaks needed? If so - how to migrate contacts db and sms message archive from om2008.12 to om2009? As far as I understood it's recommended to flash om2009. Is it possible to use sd instead? If so - where can I find instructions on how to do it with om2009 TR3? Yes running on an SD card is no problem, and is the method I would recommend if you just want to test it, and is the same as any other distro in that regard. The instructions vary depend on what bootloader so check the wiki. Going a bit further, is there plan to start supporting normal upgrade via something like opkg upgrade since om2009 TR x? Upgrades should start working before we get to release but there are a couple of minor bugs that need working out first. If those aren't resloved before release I will try to provide an upgrade script that will do the right thing were opkg can't There are also certain features lacking in om2008.12 which I'm really looking forward to see in om2009 in addition to basics mentioned above: - correctly receive call\sms in suspend mode e. g. wake up and work Part of that with any distro is to make sure you have the modem flashed to moko11 - alarm clock working in suspend mode - wi-fi with wpa2 working out-of-the-box - some media player supporting ogg and mp3 It is unlikely that mp3 will ever be supported out of the box. What I'm looking at right now is to ship an mplayer or gstreamer frontend and you will need to install the mp3 functionality from a different distro. It's not clear (maybe I miss something - feel free to point me to appropriate info) if it is in om2009 TR 3. Re: [FSO/SHR] ogpsd/fso-gpsd: can't get 4Hz sample rate
I've tried configuring (via frameworkd's om.py) the chip with a 3000ms period between samples, and sure enough gpspipe is outputting only one set of messages per every 3 seconds - so this proves my CFG-RATE message is correctly delivered. However, I also see that the gpspipe output is... chaotic. Although the NMEA timestamps are always correct (they skip 3 seconds), sometimes the messages are delayed and then delivered in batches. For example, there is nothing for 6 seconds, and both messages are delivered together. If I set the period to 5.25 seconds, I can see that all the timestamps coming out of gpspipe end with .00, which is obviously wrong. Many of the sentences are repeated, like the SW couldn't wait for the next UBX data block and just repeated the last data block. Who is doing this sample mangling? Citando Vasco Névoa vasco.ne...@sapo.pt: Hi all. Re: [Om2009] testing Release 3
Hi all, I thought I'd share my experiences so far with the testing release. I've been using QT Extended 4.4.3 as my primary phone for more than 6 months now, but I decided to try putting the OM2009 TR3 build on my SD card to give it a shot. I've only done minimal testing so far - I've been able to successfully make and receive a phone call, and the first sms I sent work, however the second one seemed to hang while saying 'sending' for quite a while. I was very happy to see that receiving a phone call while suspended woke up about as quickly as QtE 4.4.3, so I was able to easily answer the call - unlike my experience with OM 2008. However, I'd have to say that coming from QT Extended, the paroli user experience requires a *lot* of work - enough that my first thought was that my install didn't work. I saw a black screen with white text showing the time and date at the top, and 4 lines with I/O (or 1/0 - I can't tell for sure), People, Tele and Msgs on it. On each of the following pages there's no real indication what to do. The first thing I did was click on the I/O page, and saw a blank page with an edit button at the top that seemed to do nothing. Then I tried to figure out how to get back to the main page... Took me a lot of random clicking to figure out that clicking on the date at the top takes you back to the home page. The Tele page is a little more intuitive, but again, it wasn't obvious to me that the text 'Call' near the top was an actual button. I found the msgs page very confusing. I did figure out fairly quickly that '+' tries to send a new message - and I was able to send a message and get a reply.I do actually like the IM like display showing the messages back and forth. However, I couldn't really figure out what to do to send a new message to the existing conversation. I got into a mode where it seemed to be letting me edit the sms message I had just recieved, but couldn't figure out how to just reply. It seems like OM2009 has addressed the technical problems that encouraged me to switch to QtE originally - but I must admit that unless the user experience is *substantially* improved, I doubt I'll be switching off QtE. Is there work ongoing in terms of producing a better user experience for OM2009? I'd love to contribute. I don't have piles of spare time, but I've done a bunch of python coding, am pretty good with the gimp, and worked with a Ph.D in user experience for long enough to have half a clue about user interface design. If those aren't resloved before release I will try to provide an upgrade script that will do the right thing were opkg can't There are also certain features lacking in om2008.12 which I'm really looking forward to see in om2009 in addition to basics mentioned above: - correctly receive call\sms in suspend mode e. g. wake up and work Part of that with any distro is to make sure you have the modem flashed to moko11 - alarm clock working in suspend mode - wi-fi with wpa2 working out-of-the-box - some media player supporting ogg and mp3 It is unlikely that

Re: [FSO/SHR] ogpsd/fso-gpsd: can't get 4Hz sample rate
read this: http://www.nabble.com/GPS-at-4-Hz-td17096809.html NOTE about baud rate. If you can't change it, you can disable some NMEA messages to make sure the default baud rate (9600) is ok for 4hz rate. On page 106, u-blox5_Protocol_Specifications(GPS.G5-X-07036).pdf says: ... The calculation of the navigation solution will always be aligned to the top of a second. Vasco Névoa wrote: I've tried configuring (via frameworkd's om.py) the chip with a 3000ms period between samples, and sure enough gpspipe is outputting only one set of messages per every 3 seconds - so this proves my CFG-RATE message is correctly delivered. [Neovento-5.3] a quick try - lovely
Hi all, and author particularly; The things I liked - the console font made more readable - and then it got hidden by a pretty picture - how do I change that so I can read the messages? The black icon for brightness, The screen locker, very neat, After locking it stayed bright but a quick press of POW suspended it (it said that anyway) and a later quick press recovered to usable. The keyboard, interesting. This time I was able to change the keyboard by putting a new one at .matchbox/keyboard.xml . Wonderful. and even more wonderful, I replaced it with a copy of the one in the previous version, and it came out shorter. So I was able to make the xterm 24 lines long instead of 13. I have not yet looked at them to see how that sizing is done but it will be obvious I expect. The keyboard resize - please could it be made not quite so hairtrigger in use? and could it come up lower on the screen? because I was finding that to reduce the number of lines needed several tries. Even better please tell me how to set the initial size of the keyboard. (Although I now find I dont really need to do that, with the shorter keyboard the current one fits.) Not quite so good was the Menu item Accessories/keyboard. It got me a keyboard, but I couldn't get rid of it, and pressing AUX which is what I usually do for on and off keyboard looked like it got another one on top of it but both now permanent. - reboot. The change on the keyboard I really wanted was to replace something, (and there are several possibles) with open and close angle brackets. My first try a failure, the keyboard won't start, even using a 3 character symbol already in use instead of the real anglebracket one. The time. The default opkg.conf just has dest root / but you can define other destinations with dest {name} {path}. I'm assuming that enough of the original ipkg code remains that it would correctly install using /media/card/ in place of /, and symlink where necessary. (I've not tested) dpkg offers --instdir and --root options, but AFAIK it doesn't ensure that the result is accessible. No , what I was trying to do was shorten the xterm using the menu from the xterm picture in its top line. the resize in that brings up a little picture like several corners sitting together. When moved it writes the xterm size and changes the size. But it is too close to the top bar and all happens very quickly. However since I found the short keyboard, the standard xterm fits below it without need to shorten the xterm. Note when it was in use in the previous version (3.18) the keyboard was not so short.
