Hi

I tried updating to unstable, but the problem was still there. I have
also had to stop using Om2009 now because of audio problems. Sometimes
there would be loud echo or background noise and it seemed to happen

However, I do like paroli and the high contrast UI, so I would like to

Re: [Om2009] testing Release 3

2009-05-13 Thread Max
First of all thank you for hard work Angus.

I'd love to test om2009 but there are several questions I have to
clarify before. The problem is that right now I have to use om2008.12 as
my daily phone (this experience brings new depth into definition of
annoyingly crappy software but that's not the point). So before
switching to om2009 TR3 I need to make sure that there are no
regressions which would make my life with FR even worse (it's hard to
imagine but it's possible).

The very essential things I expect from om-whatever are:
- send and receive calls to\from phones in international format e. g.
starting with + like +790934534...
- read and create contacts both in English and Russian from both sim
card and internal db
- send and receive sms both in English and Russian
- lock and unlock screen by pressing aux button

I guess it's pretty common expectations and it sometimes work somehow
with om2008.12

So my question is - are above mentioned features available on om2009 TR3
out-of-the-box?
Is there are some packages I need to install to achieve it or some
configuration tweaks needed?

If so - how to migrate contacts db and sms message archive from
om2008.12 to om2009?

As far as I understood it's recommended to flash om2009.
Is it possible to use sd instead? If so - where can I find instructions
on how to do it with om2009 TR3?

Going a bit further, is there plan to start supporting normal upgrade
via something like opkg upgrade since om2009 TR x?

There are also certain features lacking in om2008.12 which I'm really
looking forward to see in om2009 in addition to basics mentioned above:
- correctly receive call\sms in suspend mode e. g. wake up and work
- alarm clock working in suspend mode
- wi-fi with wpa2 working out-of-the-box
- some media player supporting ogg and mp3

It's not clear (maybe I miss something - feel free to point me to
appropriate info) if it is in om2009 TR 3.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

best regards,
Max.

You have to have a system easily flashable.. That's why I built
Kustomizer for 2008.12 - I always can go back to a working system with
not much hassle..

The very essential things I expect from om-whatever are:

Cyrillic, don't know.

No, doesn't happen yet.

No

Replace the alsa state

If so - how to migrate contacts db and sms message archive from

My guess is that you don't.. That's why I never even tried to believe

AFAIK OM2009t3 should do this

Otherwise (as a non-hacker) can I contribute anything that'd support you in

Russ

2009/2/14 Olof Sjobergh olo...@gmail.com

 Hi,

This is to announce the first release of Enscribi, a new handwriting
recognition input method I've been working on. The main focus, and the
only thing supported for now, is writing Japanese and Chinese
characters (and numbers, but numbers only won't get you far...). It
uses the excellent Zinnia recognition engine for the actual
recognition. If anyone is interested, please take a look.

 There's a project page at http://olofsj.github.com/enscribi/ with
 screenshots and some more information.

There are packages on opkg.org for trying it out (only tested on FSO
milestone 5). The following packages are available:
 http://www.opkg.org/package_133.htmlEnscribi
 http://www.opkg.org/package_130.htmlZinnia (required dependency)
 http://www.opkg.org/package_131.htmlZinnia-tomoe-ja (for Japanese
 support)
 http://www.opkg.org/package_132.htmlZinnia-tomoe-zh (for Chinese
 support)

Also, you need a Japanese or Chinese font to see the characters
(should be available in the usual repos).

The code is hosted on Github at
 http://github.com/olofsj/enscribi/tree/master

 Best regards,

 Olof Sjöbergh

No, we are Golden Delicious Computers (aka The Handheld-Linux Shop).

What's the procedure of ordering free battery for phone fixed on
 buzz-fix party?

 best regards,
 Max.

Generally you can choose between looking if someone is organizing a
buzz-fix party or you can send your device to us for the rework
service. Both approaches have pros and cons.

E.g. during a party you meet nice people and can take your device back
immediately. But you may have to travel to distant location - and the
main requirement is that there must be someone who organizes this at
all. The rework service results in a much longer time without a
freerunner but is just as far away from you as the next postal office
or courier service.

The free battery is a courtesy from Openmoko and is included in both
approaches. OM sends a set of spare batteries to the one who organizes
a party. He hands them out to you during that party. But I don't know
if it applies to I had my phone recently fixed in a fix party in
Germany or just to future parties.

Hope this clarifies a little and gives you more background information
for decisions,
Nikolaus

Hi,

There's nothing stopping adding english support. I thought about
adding it myself. The only thing you need is stroke data for all the
letters, which are not so many for English. Then it would be possible
to make a new theme for English input as well (the letters are not as
large and complicated as for Japanese and Chinese, so you can get away
with a smaller drawing area for each letter).

So what's needed is stroke data for all the letters. I'm currently
experimenting with writing a stroke editor so it's easy to add new
characters. When this is done it would be quite simple to add new
characters. You'd just have to draw all the letters.

I'm currently on a business trip and wan't be able to work in it for
now, but when it's ready I'll post info about here on the mailing
list. At best, I'd say a few weeks from now, but that depends on how
much free time I get.

Olof

 Regards,

 Olof

I've never tried accessing the modem this way, but assuming the method is
correct the problem may be the modem going to sleep after a second or so of
inactivity. The first command it receives when asleep will wake it, but will
be ignored. Enter the command again quickly enough and it should work.

 SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device

basically looks like debian lost the device somehow.
i get that sometimes when unplugging the fr. usb0 seems not to be shut
down correctly but in some limbo.
so far i haven't been able to find a clear workaround.

usually my attempts include
- unplugging the fr
- removing all relevant modules (cdc*, usbnet, ...)
- restarting networking (/etc/init.d/networking restart)

sometimes it seems to help if the fr is suspended and resumed.
may be interesting to restart networking on the fr as well.

Looks like udev on your machine assigns it to eth1. I had this issue on my
gentoo machine atleast.. Hell.. every time i flash the device it gets
another mac and udev assigns a new device for it. Either you configure
access to your moko to eth1 or change the udev rules in to make it go to
usb0 again.

[FSO/SHR] ogpsd/fso-gpsd: can't get 4Hz sample rate

2009-05-13 Thread Vasco Névoa

Hi all.

I'm used to putting the GTA02's ublox chip into 4Hz sample mode for my
research projects, but ever since I started using FSO and derivatives
I can't get it to spit out anything other than 1Hz samples - so I just
stop fso-gpsd, configure the chip at my own will, and read directly
from /dev/ttySAC1.
However, this is the unfriendly way to do it, and I'd like to
integrate this option with FSO.

So I found the initialization sequence inside
/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/framework/subsystems/ogpsd/om.py
and added this to the end of def initializeDevice, just before the
self.huiTimeout = gobject.timeout_add_seconds( 300,
self.requestHuiTimer ):
# increase sample data rate to 4Hz:
 self.send(CFG-RATE, 6, {Meas : 0x00fa, Nav : 0x0001,
Time : 0x})
Unfortunately, it doesn't change anything. gpspipe -r will still put
out a single set of messages per second, even though the GPS chip is
(hopefuly) configured for 4 sets per second. When used with the
original gpsd in other older distros, this didn't happen; gpspipe -r
outputs whatever the the gpsd delivers. So the problem is most likely
in FSO's ogpsd implementation.
Sending a u-blox binary string into /dev/ttySAC1 with the same config
message while fso-gpsd is working also doesn't work out (I've tried
many times just in case I'm racing with the framework and messages get
mangled).

I've combed the framework code in that folder trying to find any 1s
cycle hardcoded, but everything looks as it should: event-triggered by
available data.
So the 1M€ question is: where the heck is this 1s polling cycle
defined? How can I get the ogpsd framework to output 4 samples per
second instead of 1?

Any hints will be appreciated.

Thx,

V.

Re: [Om2009] testing Release 3

2009-05-13 Thread Angus Ainslie
Hi Max

Thanks Risto for answering some of these.

On May 13, 2009 04:18:47 am Max wrote:
First of all thank you for hard work Angus.

Hey I just put the lego together you should be thanking Mirko, and the FSO
team.

The very essential things I expect from om-whatever are:
 - send and receive calls to\from phones in international format e. g.
 starting with + like +790934534...
 - read and create contacts both in English and Russian from both sim
 card and internal db
 - send and receive sms both in English and Russian

This should be fixed in the unstable feed. To get it you will need to install
Om2009 and the bring that package in from unstable or wait for TR4

 - lock and unlock screen by pressing aux button

AUX button has other uses

I guess it's pretty common expectations and it sometimes work somehow
 with om2008.12

So my question is - are above mentioned features available on om2009 TR3
 out-of-the-box?

Not yet

Is there are some packages I need to install to achieve it or some
 configuration tweaks needed?

If so - how to migrate contacts db and sms message archive from
 om2008.12 to om2009?

As far as I understood it's recommended to flash om2009.
Is it possible to use sd instead? If so - where can I find instructions
on how to do it with om2009 TR3?

Yes running on an SD card is no problem, and is the method I would recommend
if you just want to test it, and is the same as any other distro in that
regard. The instructions vary depend on what bootloader so check the wiki.

Going a bit further, is there plan to start supporting normal upgrade
via something like opkg upgrade since om2009 TR x?

Upgrades should start working before we get to release but there are a couple
of minor bugs that need working out first. If those aren't resloved before
release I will try to provide an upgrade script that will do the right thing
were opkg can't

There are also certain features lacking in om2008.12 which I'm really
looking forward to see in om2009 in addition to basics mentioned above:
 - correctly receive call\sms in suspend mode e. g. wake up and work

Part of that with any distro is to make sure you have the modem flashed to
moko11

 - alarm clock working in suspend mode
 - wi-fi with wpa2 working out-of-the-box
 - some media player supporting ogg and mp3

It is unlikely that mp3 will ever be supported out of the box. What I'm
looking at right now is to ship an mplayer or gstreamer frontend and you will
need to install the mp3 functionality from a different distro.

It's not clear (maybe I miss something - feel free to point me to
appropriate info) if it is in om2009 TR 3.

Om2009 is pretty fluid right now but I'm trying to keep it's page uptodate

since you don't specify i can't really say anything.

assuming you mean buzzing:
buzz with the headset is said to be still there, because not related to
the known buzz fix.
to remedy this buzz one has to open up the shielded area inside fr and
solder around -- most likely inducing a whole bunch of other issues.

another fix is, to disable the mic of the headset -- ie either
mechanically by unsoldering the connection to a pin inside the fr, cutting
the wire in the headset or by shutting down via alsa.

someone proposed to create a state file that allows using the headset's
earpieces together with the built-in mic, ie going the alsa way, but so
far i didn't see one.
and since i am a complete illiterate regarding alsa lingo i can't do it
myself.

Re: [FSO/SHR] ogpsd/fso-gpsd: can't get 4Hz sample rate

2009-05-13 Thread Vasco Névoa

I've tried configuring (via frameworkd's om.py) the chip with a 3000ms
period between samples, and sure enough gpspipe is outputting only one
set of messages per every 3 seconds - so this proves my CFG-RATE
message is correctly delivered.

However, I also see that the gpspipe output is... chaotic. Although
the NMEA timestamps are always correct (they skip 3 seconds),
sometimes the messages are delayed and then delivered in batches. For
example, there is nothing for 6 seconds, and both messages are
delivered together.

If I set the period to 5.25 seconds, I can see that all the timestamps
coming out of gpspipe end with .00, which is obviously wrong.
Many of the sentences are repeated, like the SW couldn't wait for the
next UBX data block and just repeated the last data block.

Who is doing this sample mangling?

Citando Vasco Névoa vasco.ne...@sapo.pt:

[neovento] nand space workaround?

2009-05-13 Thread Staley, Daniel L
I recently installed neovento, and I like what has been done!

However, because I flashed the neovento image to the nand, I am running pretty
low on space for installing new packages (And with the debian repos open to
me...it is surely quick to fill!)
My initial idea was to copy my /usr to the uSD card and then just mount it on
boot. I also looked at the mhddfs package (seems pretty neatnot sure if it
would work well here or not)

But then i wondered if there was an easier waysurely someone has run into
this already? What other ways have people got around the internal nand size
limitation?
(Besides just installing the whole thing on the uSD card)

Also, does anyone have experience with mhddfs and could comment on if it would
work welll here?

Thanks,

Re: [Om2009] testing Release 3

2009-05-13 Thread Warren Baird
Hi all,

I thought I'd share my experiences so far with the testing release. I've
been using QT Extended 4.4.3 as my primary phone for more than 6 months now,
but I decided to try putting the OM2009 TR3 build on my SD card to give it a
shot.

I've only done minimal testing so far - I've been able to successfully make
and receive a phone call, and the first sms I sent work, however the second
one seemed to hang while saying 'sending' for quite a while. I was very
happy to see that receiving a phone call while suspended woke up about as
quickly as QtE 4.4.3, so I was able to easily answer the call - unlike my
experience with OM 2008.

However, I'd have to say that coming from QT Extended, the paroli user
experience requires a *lot* of work - enough that my first thought was that
my install didn't work.

I saw a black screen with white text showing the time and date at the top,
and 4 lines with I/O (or 1/0 - I can't tell for sure), People, Tele
and Msgs on it. On each of the following pages there's no real
indication what to do. The first thing I did was click on the I/O page,
and saw a blank page with an edit button at the top that seemed to do
nothing. Then I tried to figure out how to get back to the main page...
Took me a lot of random clicking to figure out that clicking on the date at
the top takes you back to the home page.

The Tele page is a little more intuitive, but again, it wasn't obvious to me
that the text 'Call' near the top was an actual button.

I found the msgs page very confusing. I did figure out fairly quickly that
'+' tries to send a new message - and I was able to send a message and get a
reply.I do actually like the IM like display showing the messages back
and forth. However, I couldn't really figure out what to do to send a new
message to the existing conversation. I got into a mode where it seemed to
be letting me edit the sms message I had just recieved, but couldn't figure
out how to just reply.

It seems like OM2009 has addressed the technical problems that encouraged me
to switch to QtE originally - but I must admit that unless the user
experience is *substantially* improved, I doubt I'll be switching off QtE.

Is there work ongoing in terms of producing a better user experience for
OM2009? I'd love to contribute. I don't have piles of spare time, but
I've done a bunch of python coding, am pretty good with the gimp, and worked
with a Ph.D in user experience for long enough to have half a clue about
user interface design.

To get it you will need to
 install

Yes running on an SD card is no problem, and is the method I would
 recommend
if you just want to test it, and is the same as any other distro in that
regard. The instructions vary depend on what bootloader so check the wiki.

Going a bit further, is there plan to start supporting normal upgrade
via something like opkg upgrade since om2009 TR x?

Upgrades should start working before we get to release but there are a
 couple
of minor bugs that need working out first. If those aren't resloved before
release I will try to provide an upgrade script that will do the right
 thing
 were opkg can't

There are also certain features lacking in om2008.12 which I'm really
looking forward to see in om2009 in addition to basics mentioned above:
  - correctly receive call\sms in suspend mode e. g. wake up and work

Part of that with any distro is to make sure you have the modem flashed to
 moko11

  - alarm clock working in suspend mode
  - wi-fi with wpa2 working out-of-the-box
  - some media player supporting ogg and mp3

 It is unlikely that

Hi Warren!

I just couldn't agree more with your comments!
I wrote a message about my remarks of the Paroli GUI here:
http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/community/2009-May/047818.html -
but no answers so far. I'd really like to know the thinking behind
Paroli GUI and know how to contribute and so on.

So by all means, I too want to welcome you to work on Paroli. I don't
know what are the changes to be able to work on the GUI but it's
always worth trying, and I especially respect that you are a
professional in this field and OM should work hard to make people like
you to contribute and stay around and not go away.

So make sure you're not forgotten. An easy way to join is to come to
#paroli IRC -channel. If you have time skills some kind of analysis
of the UI would be great.

Enjoy your freedom!

fso-gpsd creates new (fake) NMEA messages from data that it gets

You could try uninstalling fso-gpsd, installing normal gpsd and

[Neovento-5.3] a quick try - lovely

2009-05-13 Thread clare johnstone
Hi all, and author particularly;
The things I liked - the console font made more readable - and then it
got hidden by a pretty picture - how do I change that so I can read
the messages?
The black icon for brightness,
The screen locker, very neat, After locking it stayed bright but a
quick press of POW suspended it (it said that anyway) and a later
quick press recovered to usable.

The keyboard, interesting. This time I was able to change the keyboard
by putting a new one at .matchbox/keyboard.xml . Wonderful. and even
more wonderful, I replaced it with a copy of the one in the previous
version, and it came out shorter. So I was able to make the xterm 24
lines long instead of 13. I have not yet looked at them to see how
that sizing is done but it will be obvious I expect.
The keyboard resize - please could it be made not quite so hairtrigger
in use? and could it come up lower on the screen? because I was
finding that to reduce the number of lines needed several tries.
Even better please tell me how to set the initial size of the
keyboard. (Although I now find I dont really need to do that, with the
shorter keyboard the current one fits.)

Not quite so good was the Menu item Accessories/keyboard. It got me a
keyboard, but I couldn't get rid of it, and pressing AUX which is what
I usually do for on and off keyboard looked like it got another one on
top of it but both now permanent. - reboot.

The change on the keyboard I really wanted was to replace something,
(and there are several possibles) with open and close angle
brackets. My first try a failure, the keyboard won't start, even using
a 3 character symbol already in use instead of the real anglebracket
one.

The time. Based on previous I have saved localtime file and linked
localtime to /usr/share/zoneinfo/Australia/Perth. That got me WST
time. good. AND it survived reboot. much better - I have been
wondering who wanted the time on Lord Howe Island...

But on another reboot (and I don't know what was different) I am back
on Lord Howe - and it is the problem I had in the previous version,
localtime has been overwitten and with it the file
/usr/share/zoneinfo/Australia/Perth.
I am now keeping a copy of that on /mnt/sdcard for immediate use
until the problem is fixed.

more later, no time now - Thanks very much it is really exciting;

Then it's likely that you will be happy with the recent version.
It's much better than the best you tried :)

But then i wondered if there was an easier waysurely someone has
run into this already? What other ways have people got around the
internal nand size limitation? (Besides just installing the whole

Also, does anyone have experience with mhddfs and could comment on if
 it would work welll here?

Does it use opkg to install packages? If so, try adding dest
sd /media/card to /etc/opkg/opkg.conf, then use opkg -d sd install
{opkgname}. The default opkg.conf just has dest root / but you can
define other destinations with dest {name} {path}. I'm assuming that
enough of the original ipkg code remains that it would correctly install
using /media/card/ in place of /, and symlink where necessary.
(I've not tested)

dpkg offers --instdir and --root options, but AFAIK it doesn't ensure
that the result is accessible. ($PATH, configs, etc)

The font option is quite new in the debian on freerunner script, I like that
too.
Actually, when you see the picture, X already started some time ago. Isn't
that enough text to read until then? ^^
It's a pity the openmoko-panel-plugin development seems to have stopped.
It's a great app.

The keyboard was designed to be fingerfriendly, that makes it so huge.
The size is actually hard coded, you could change some values in the sources
to get a smaller keyboard.
I don't know if the sizing is that obvious, it seems to be relate to the
space bar somehow indirectly or directly.
The keyboard will (may) be improved by some fellow on the fyp boards.

Yes, that's the reason why there was not such a button before. But I find it
useful for kinds of exceptional cases.

You wanted to change something in the keyboard.xml? That's tricky sometimes.
You have to delete everything within the quotes.

So you mean the window borders are to small for resizing. That's true.
I don't know if LXDE will make it into the next release or if it will be
Qalee already.^^
But I'll remember that. Of course you can change the themes by yourself.
There are already some with thicker borders besides clearlooks.

No , what I was trying to do was shorten the xterm using the menu from
the xterm picture in its top line.
the resize in that brings up a little picture like several corners
sitting together. When moved it writes the
xterm size and changes the size. But it is too close to the top bar
and all happens very quickly. However since I found the short
keyboard, the standard xterm fits below it without need to shorten the
xterm. Note when it was in use in the previous version (3.18) the
keyboard was not so short.

This morning in the train, I was able to get the GPRS working, and
thus try Woosh and read the BBC news. This I have always wanted. As my
SIM card is GPRS and not GSM (except enough to get the GPRS) I have
not yet tried sound. I did see earlier version had a bug against
sound. I have other SIMS but none of them does both GPRS and GSM,
except 3 which won't work in the openmoko. It is not all the SIMS
that is the nuisance it is the battery chargers.

When i got the GPRS the time changed back from WST to LHST so somehow
it is getting time from the supplier and then
resetting it. LHST is 2.5 hours ahead of WST, I can work it out, but
in Europe - 10.5 hours ahead of UTC.

more later,
thank you,
clare

Hi, it has apt-get. I cant do it just now but previously, as it
already has mounted the first partition of the sdcard as /mnt/sdcard,
I put just the cache part of /etc/apt on the card and it then wrote
