 Thanks for your reply. I'm a little confused about what is going on

 Because it's not showing up as /dev/ethX or /devusbX as I

 indeed I'd also like USB port for charging and connecting other

 please keep in mind that there is an European directive about that:

 http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2009/02/european_commission_pushing_microusb_standard_for_mobile_phone_chargers-2/

 I intended we _MUST_ include the microusb for any new mobile phone if it has
 to be sold in EU.

 and if we do not strictly must, it's a clever solution because:
 - you do not have to sell also the ad-hoc charger with the new hardware.
 - an user can easily find a compatible charging source when not at home (eg.
 friends, colleagues, any computer, car's usb socket...)

 btw microusb is quite thin, so maybe we can put it side by side to the 40pin
 connector using both sides of the MID's pcb.

Dudes, what you think about normal usb instead microusb? many devices
can be easily plugged into the phone. Not for long usage of course.
flash drives, tv tuners, keyboard, gamepad, etc...

 interesting opportunity.

 As an early-stage startup, we don't have that much money and time to

 already done to help things to go on. We obviously know Openmoko's
 Freerunner, but didn't play with it really much, nor know the team

 what do you have to bring into such a shared project, and how do you see

Re: New Phone Project (MiniMoko) : Which functionalities ?

2010-10-06 Thread Chuck Norris
 06.10.2010 19:41, Thomas HOCEDEZ ?:
 Hi,

 As you might have read, Always Innovating (A.I.), is opened to think
 about a collaboration between them and us (Openmoko community) to
 build a phone based on their MiniBook.

 This device is a MID, without phone capabilities (except VoIP). So the
 idea is to build something together on that basis.
 I don't want AT ALL to shortcut GTA04 project, which is vital for
 everyone, so the main idea would be to improve a bit the MiniBook,
 generating a lite version of the GTA04. By lite, I suggest not to
 overload the bill motherboard with extra features that GTA04 will
 bring.

 More, The MiniBook have to stay an A.I. product, this mean, it must be
 linkable to the others as it does today.

 For information, MiniBook has already impressive specs :

 * TI http://www.ti.com cortex-A8 with 3D and video acceleration
 * 512MB (RAM) + 256MB (NAND) Memory
 * Main storage: 8GB microSD card
 * 480x320 3.5 capacitive touchscreen
 * 30fps VGA front webcam
 * Wifi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth class 2.1
 * Video output HDMI HD
 * Two high-quality stereo speakers
 * Internal microphone
 * Headphone jack
 * 3-dimensional accelerometer
 * One 1500 mAh battery
 * Bi-color silver/black case
 * 64mm x 106mm x 9.3mm
 * Secured attachment of the MID into a Touch Book Table

 There's nothing much to improve, nothing to remove, just adding GSM/3G
 chip. Nikolaus Schaller pointed the OPTION GTM501, which is a
 brilliant little chip ! And if we use the same one, the porting of
 distros/software will be easier from one machine to another.

 So, the first question is : What to add for this project being
 interresting ? Those will be minimal functions (forget Wimax, 4G,
 coffe machines or color printer ...).

 Second question : Debian is able to run on such a device, but does
 developpers of other distributions can tell if it would be possible to
 port their on it ?

 Third question : On the basis we have a 'paper' version of the phone,
 is there anyone able to give a hand to AI for the integration of new
 components on the board or do we let AI do the major part of the job ?
 (this way, we only would be 'consultants' for them).

 Thanks for your interest.

 Thomas.

 Well, `not wanting to force subscriptions' is actually the right answer
 if it would have been an `either/or' choice.

 More probably, it's because it's just not viable to include it in a
 device that size at that price-range--there have been in-depths
 discussions about this as it pertained to the FreeRunner, previously;
 they're probably still applicable.

 As far as the full-sized tablet goes, you could look into getting a
 UMTS/HSDPA/whatever USB stick to connect to one of those internal USB ports.
 I've seen ones that may be small enough for as low as $50 US, though
 it's not obvious how well they'd work from inside the tablet.

 Hello,

 the Freerunner open mobile phone in a Linux-based handheld
 game console.
 It is simple, and contains cool and suitable open source games for
 Linux mobile devices.

 http://gamerunner.sourceforge.net/

 We have been working in this idea for a couple of months (in 2009),
 improving current openmoko games, and writting a game control useful
 for any game.
 Our first idea is always to have with us a SD full of games to play.

 Because the last two months we did not do much, I am announcing it,
 so other gamers can try it.

 All the games which use the new gamecontrol does not work
 well the first time you run these. After, all go okey.

 Moreover, we need to improve that general game control
 that we are writting, because it is not so cool yet.
 But well, you can play if you know well it :)

 For other games we have worked improving speed as well.

 If we get some free time to continue we will add super nintendo
 emulator (which we already have tested) and new versions
 of the new game control.

 After, we'll add more games specifically built for this game distro.

 The web site has some docs as well about our work.

 Cheers

fullscreen transparent keyboard

2010-04-01 Thread Chuck Norris
I think it would be nice to have fullscreen transparent keyboard instead
of small keyboard in the bottom that eats screen space. So anybody know
application that fit my needs? I googled... but found nothing
interesting. I've begun developing my own virtual keyboard. I've created
sample gtk application - transparent window with one button that sends
a to X. Will my keyboard be useful for anybody if I'll continue
creating it?

Re: [Debian,QtMoko] X server and rotation

Radek Polak пишет:
 Hi,
 i have been struggling for some time to get X server working in landscape
 mode. I was trying:

 - Xglamo with xrandr - screen always goes white, reboot needed
 - Xglamo -screen 480x...@90 - does not work either, screen is somehow shifted
 - Xorg with fbdev driver and CCW option in xorg.conf - seems to have no effect
 - Xfbdev - does not support tslib in debian

 Yesterday i recompiled Xfbdev package with tslib support and now it seems to
 be working. For running the X server i do:

 Xfbdev -retro -screen 480x...@90 -mouse tslib,,device=/dev/input/event1

 But still it's not perfect. I am trying to run scummvm on this Xserver:

 export DISPLAY=:0
 scummvm

 but the Xserver segfaults. But I have found out that if start matchbox window
 manager before scummvm it works. So i have now this script:

 neo:~# cat /bin/scummvm.sh
 #!/bin/sh
 matchbox-window-manager
 sleep 5
 scummvm

 I am doing this on debian testing. My Xfbdev with tslib support is here [1].
 I
 build it with:

 apt-get build-dep xserver-xfbdev
 apt-get source xserver-xfbdev
 edited debina/rules and replaced disable-tslib with enable-tslib
 dpkg-buildpackage -b

 Hope this helps someone. Anyone has better way how to do this?

transparency in gtk

2010-03-24 Thread Chuck Norris
I need transparency in gtk under freerunner. So I compiled this code

#include gtk/gtk.h

gint main(gint argc, gchar **argv)
{
GtkWidget *window;

gtk_init(argc, argv);

window = gtk_window_new(GTK_WINDOW_TOPLEVEL);

gtk_window_set_opacity(GTK_WINDOW(window), 0.1);

gtk_widget_show_all(window);

gtk_main();
}

under my desktop and it shows transparent window. Then I compiled it for
shr-u with crosscompiler from tmp/cross folder of shr-u sources. And on
freerunner it shows not transparent window. So Is it possible to create
transparent gtk apps in shr or other distribs for freerunner? And how if
it possible?

Re: sim card detection

2010-03-23 Thread Chuck Norris
Kai-Martin пишет:
 My freerunner seems to have an issue with my sim card after boot. More
 often than not the phone seems to be ignorant to the sim card. Consequently,
 it doesn't attach to the GSM net, SMS messages on the card are not readable
 and it can't receive calls. But sometimes, the card is detected fine about
 three minutes after boot. If so, it the sim card stays known to the system
 after wake-up from suspend.

 I looked very closely on the way I attach the card into is socket. But this
 seems ok with no margin of error. I also made sure, the pins are clean and
 shiny. So electrical contact should not be flaky.

 Is the freerunner particularly fussy on the type of sim card? I read about
 problems with 3G cards. But mine is a pretty old O2 card -- bought in 2005.

 There is a suspicion, though. If I remember correctly, all the successful
 boots were done with a cable attached -- either USB from my desktop, or the
 connection to the charger. Could this be a hint? Maybe the system power is
 raised above some critical value to make the communication work? Is this a
 known issue?

 BTW, if there is no sim card detected, the application Settings-Phone hangs
 indefinitely on start-up. I'd consider this a bug where would I report on it?

 ---)kaimartin(---

I have pretty same issue. And with switching to shr-u from shr-t issue
becomes stronger. But hackable:1 installed on sd turns on GSM very
quickly. So, to get GSM working under shr I do

/etc/init.d/frameworkd restart

and if it doesn't help I try

boot hackable - wait GSM - boot shr

often it helps.
