Weird. I suppose this same SIM works in other phones (non neos)? Do you have another ATT sim to try? Does the SIM keep track of what phones it is inserted into? And if so, perhaps it's memory is full? I have not read the GSM spec in great detail, but perhaps it is plausible :) Maybe you sim is worn out! heh :) We have not spent a great deal of time using the neos you upgraded for us. The last time we used the 3G sim cards they worked fine. There will be some heavier testing of them shortly. Perhaps I will start tomorrow given this new info! Samsung S3C2443 and USB2.0
I spent a few minutes browsing the processor units on Samsung's site. I've been thinking about the whole data transfer issue with SH1 and SH2. Both are using USB1.1 as the interface to the host pc. This will be a painfully slow way to transfer large amounts of data (ie music). It will be difficult (not impossible) to remove the microSD card from the neo1973. It would be nice to see OpenMoko.Inc move to a processor that has USB2.0 as quickly as possible in their development cycle. What are the chances? Re: Again: Advertising thoughts
Just one thing: the general public doesn't even know the word Linux. I don't really agree with the stance that Linux is a bad word here and I don't think that it is bad to associate with Linux. Microsoft has been pushing Windows Mobile for years to try to leverage their so-called easy to use OS as compared with Palm. Not that Linux is the all powerful word to use to get people on board either. But to say that openmoko is built on Linux (or GNU/Linux for the truly hardcore) is generally a positive thing because Linux is the embodiment of open and free in the current computing world. The thing that must be stressed is that the phone is open, not closed, both in speech and in beer. One more thing. I'd agree that people watching TV commercials may not know what Linux is (except for those IBM ads a few years ago). But youtube ads...come on, most have at least heard about that non-Microsoft thing! Re: Again: Advertising thoughts
That's funny because I have been on the receiving end of much idiocy in my calls tech support. If you are working in a help desk you are going to be called by folks needing help. Some of which will be idiots. But how many consumers did not call the help desk? It is like a doctor saying most people are sick! My point is that they need to be educated. Advertising is indeed education. I see new products all the time via the advertising medium. Advertising is the first shot at educating them. As an aside: What is the target audience for the Neo1973? Probably someone who wants to use their phone for more that dialing. If that is true, they are going to be a little more tech savvy than the average consumer. What is the biggest advantage of openmoko from the competitors? Is it the cool graphics and sweet multi-touch? No...not yet anyways. It is a philosophy. Yes, it needs to offer really great technical advantages. Yes, they need to be promoted. My original point is that the biggest advantage (the whole reason openmoko was conceived), is that it is FOSS. That there will be hundreds of applications that can be installed for whatever purpose. I believe this is why there is so much buzz surrounding the project right now. But I could be wrong :) As long as the consumer doesn't think it is running Windows Mobile, heh. On 7/14/07, Giles Jones [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, I'm new here, I have an OpenMoko on order and hope to do some development. I'll contribute ideas and bug reports at the least. I'm not sure I've ever used a touch screen mobile device that caters for left handed people. On the whole there aren't many issues with using devices left handed, so adding the support is easy. The main problem is scrollbars, when they're on the right dragging the scrollbar left handed results in your hand covering the screen so you can't see what you are doing. So having the option of scrollbars on the left would be useful. Ideally if you implement such features in the interface and not per application then it will all be transparent and less work will need to be done. Comments? Giles. I agree with this. As a lefty on the N800, this can become quite a pain. One nice thing about the N800 interface is inside the webrowser you can scroll anywhere in the window like your moving a piece of paper. ___ OpenMoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
Re: Support for Left handers

We would just add a config option that is read by the ui library and then everyone that uses the standard ui library would automatically have a left handed application. So the main question is what all do you want moved(I am right handed)? The scroll bar is the obvious one, would you like the spinner thing and the button on the bottom switch as well. (seems like that would be the best way to keep the scroll seperate). Also what about the top and bottom status bars and such. I think someone should edit some of the screen shots to how they would like a lefty screen to look and post it somewhere in the wiki for discussion. I don't think the whole screen should be mirrored! There are some elements that should remain..like the main top bar with the status icons and such. Scrollbars are the main thing I can think of right now. If I'm interpreting this correctly they are running both ground, left-earphone, right-earphone and microphone in one plug. To me, this seems much more convenient than the 2x 3.5mm plug method used for computer headphones. hopefully it is a 4-conductor connector. unfortunately there are two ways manufacturers commonly wire up the 4-conductor 2.5mm connector. I have a set that is wired for the palm way of doing it that I plan to try. Nokia ships 4-conductor 3.5mm stereo headphones w/mic with their n800. The jack is backward-compatible with 3-conductor headphones. It's the first time I've seen a 3.5mm plug that could work with a microphone. It just might take a while to catch on. On the a2dp front, we got some help from Nokia on our codec and now it's running nicely in (mostly) 32-bit ops. It should be pretty easy for the cpu to encode stereo audio on the fly, but there is still a delay that we need to accommodate.
