Being lazy, I wanted a confirmation :) from someone who tried.

You could also have a try with android, however imho the advantages of
our device are not exploited with android. Freerunner is not just a
 phone or pda :)

I'm afraid is not even a phone yet, as its soul (software) is haunted :)

Does anybody knows a kernel and a basic phone application that work
 with Neo Freerunner?

When I say 'work', I mean the phone:
  - doesn't have to be restarted daily/weekly[/montly]
  - it is 100% reliable on making and receiving voice calls
  - it is 100% reliable on sending and receiving sms (even some are not
displayed well, like unicode characters, 'multipart' messages, etc.)
  - doesn't have to suspend if it can be used 'modestly' at least 20
 hours without charging

The kernel doesn't have to be Linux.
The phone application doesn't have to be open source as long as it can
be downloaded without paying. No need of a virtual keyboard, except
for writing a phone number that will be called. If the address book
can be edited with a text editor or from command line it will be fine.

Currently, I use Radek's build, but the phone (or qtopia) has to be
restarted from time to time: it is slow on handling the voice calls,
and if the modem has to do more then one operation, like closing a
voice call while somebody else is calling or I receive a sms, it may
go in a state in which I cannot make a voice call.

Re: Freerunner gone...

2009-12-15 Thread Martin Šenkeřík
I feel duty to tell you my story of lost FreeRunner:

It was in our small town (6000 inhabitants), and my FR has fallen down
to grass. I noticed this next day, and I was pretty aware of the only
place, where it could happen. But phone was away. I asked people
living near, but nobody found nothing. So I wrote info on my blog
(which started just because this situation), with all info if somebody
would try to google about the FR. I also used local web infoservice to
let people know. The same day I've got call, they probably found it,
but they didn't know what to do with it, so they started looking for
some info and they got to me thanks to our group order page.
The story was that, one guy was on the walk with dog, which brought to
him bag with black thing. He didn't know what is it, so he gave it to
his friend. Friend realized, that there is probably linux system
(according to scrolling text when booting :-)), but that was all - and
started googling. He told me, if that is normal phone, he would
probably not try so much to find info about it...

I was really happy, so don't abandon all hope, and try to help your FR
to find his way home ;-)
Good luck!

 prevent these things from happening.

 1. Sms sentry. Put that application, or a similar one, in every light

 sentry:location to moko.
 2. When another sms is send we should be able to put the volume to max
and play a voice saying: PLEASE RETURN THIS PORTABLE, IT IS LOST AND THE
OWNER TRIES TO FIND IT. I'd be happy to record that voice. And display
contact information on the screen delivered by sms.

What do you guys think? Saving €230 with 5 lines of code seems a big

It's very sad to know of this.

well. I thought reason was as I accidentaly dropped my FR on the

But now: where to look for problem? In agps-ui log I can see some data

I get a fix after approx. 2min when enter outside best not to close to

Once I thought that gpsd was not runnning when I had problems but since I

I'm glad it's not just me. I'm beginning to think my phone is defective, I
cannot get a fix. In the agps-ui, I'm not even seeing a signal from any of
the satellites. Running 2008.9 with the latest kernel. I've even tried using
the agps program with assist online. That makes agps-ui show a list of
satellites, and have the current GPS time, but no signal. I was thinking of
 trying the antenna repair SOP.

Ironicly, one of the biggest reasons I wanted the Freerunner, besides
openness, was to create a GRPS/GPS app.

understand it is harder to recognize them and not to recognize them by

Some time ago (or better: a long long time ago) someone in the list
posted a thread about handwriting rekognition on the Neo. In the title

he's a graffiti official, and that it would be better to not use it
as a name to avoid eventual legal dispute..

As far as i know, there's already a handwriting rekognition on the openmoko..

I agree. Single-stroke-per-character has advantages, I feel, in
reliability and in lookups and other applications where each stroke
counts. I had problems in the phone lookup interface sometimes with
Graffiti 2 - I really think they took a step backwards.

Does anyone know who owns the IP on Graffiti? I tried to hunt it down
because I personally would like to see Graffiti on my Freerunner when I
get it, since there is no hardware keyboard. (I will miss my Treo 650's
hw kb, but not the unfixable OS bugs!)

Re: InvisibleShield screen protectors

2008-06-08 Thread Martin Šenkeřík
I'll probably want full case protection, as I want FreeRunner to stay with
me for more than one-two years as normal phones did :-)

And it is not enough to offer them CAD files of device?

I asked the company if they were willing to manufacture screen
protectors for the Freerunner, this is an answer I got:

 Hello Yorick,

Were you wanting us to provide you invisibleSHIELDs directly so that
you could place them on your device before you sell them? Or would you
like an invisibleSHIELD created for in case your customers would like
 the unparalleled protection?

In either case, we would be happy to design an invisibleSHIELD for you.
If you want the invisibleSHIELD to cover the Full Body of your
Smartphone, we would need you to send us one of your devices so that we
can take precise measurements and design the invisibleSHIELD to fit
 your smartphone the best.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

 Warm regards,

 naturally it's option 2.

But do we want full case protection?
 Personally
I will probably settle with just screenprotection. But if there are
people who want full protection, maybe we can persuade Steve (or
someone else at Openmoko) to send a sample to their company?

Does anybody know if the FreeRunner's case is adequatly
scratch-resistant? (I'll post this question on the device-owner list)
