I want to have Neo1973 in Russia. AFAIK there is a problem about
certification in Rostest. I can discover certification procedure and
prices from Rostest. I wrote following email at Rostest (in Russian):

Greetings

yet another bullshit certification procedure designed to keep stuff out
the market...

I have 3 questions about cellular phones certification:

Corean company FIC releases Neo 1973 smartphone:
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Main_Page/ru

So:
Is it certified by Rostest?
How much certification will cost?
Which certification procedure you can offer?

Thanks, Anatoly

And i got answer:
Greetings, Anatoly

I need to know:
- Is you a manufacturer?
- Have you a contract with manufacturer and are you a reseller?
- Want you to import producion? How much amount?

Cost and procedure of certification depends of it.

Svetlana, Rostest

(my English is very average, sorry for mistakes)

Is anyone from manufacturers or team, who interested in certification Neo
1973 in Russia?
Can we acts cooperatively?

I'm wondering what they had to do to the radio to make it possible, or
if it is at all with GSM. Sounds like maybe they used something
different.

Of course this phone could do it with WiFi or Bluetooth, purely in software.

could be done with 802.11s like what is used in the OLPC

so, i've been following the discussion on finger-based vs.
stylus-based apps. and i thought it might be a good idea to come up
with some ideas for something between the two:
a short (20-30mm long) piece of kit, attached to the finger end

it would not be gripped between fingers and thumb but instead would
slip over the end of one finger. it could either be a metal/plastic
ring, or a soft, close-fitting cap, such as the rubber types used by
money-counters. a point would be needed to apply pressure to the
screen - this could be a short piece of metal/plastic, rigidly
attached to the ring/cap part of the stylus.

myself, i would be more likely to carry one (lot smaller than stylus,
cheap to replace if lost) and if it was well-designed it would be
virtually unnoticeable by others

anyone else see my vision? or am i insane?

already invented (and probably patented up the wazoo)

I think it is important to get the neo1973v2 out on sale as soon as

the advanced kit could be sold for $500? I don't know. But I think
that the phone is so special that it can defend the price. It just
need some good looking, well featured and optimized software.

we need

* flawlessly working dialer
* flawlessly working address book
* flawlessly working SMS send/receive

the rest can probably wait ;D

Yeah, thats the kind of Freedom fighting ads Openmoko needs.. :)

Are you scared of the big brother? Heres a cheap phone for secure calls!

Don't get me wrong, it's great that people can build up on this. But it
might well be that this kind of features narrow chances on *certain*
markets. ECHELON are you listening? ;)

agreed.
it appear those things are so expensive that I couldn't find any price
for it. (searching for secure cell phone on google)
also, it appears that none of those things can talk to one another, each
doing it's little thing.
now, if we can have something similar to an STUIII phone, with public
keys and stuff (think either using gpg or ca-cert keys), we're on to
something that could become a standard.
one thing though, we may need a special tempest proof version of the
case for that to be sufficiently secure

At a minimum, we need:

- It's got to actually work as a mobile phone.

that's the most important thing

- At least several hours of H.264 playback.

possibly doable but I don't believe the current hardware can handle it

- A good music app, ideally tied in to the Amazon/Universal store.

with the amount of DRM shit those morons are going to require, forget it
leave people put their own stuff on there. no silly iTunes crap

- Smart connectivity - connecting up bluetooth devices has to be easy,
and sensing and connecting to known WiFi networks has to be seamless and
automatic.

agreed

- Mobile Safari-like web browsing - that is, you get to see the whole
web page, and you can expand and contract the image.

ok

- Leverage the GPS to do things the iPhone doesn't do.

that should be somehow tied with openstreetmap

depending on the timeframe, perhaps FIC could contact or help the

graphics controller asic that would be used for embedded systems.
Using the opengraphics asic in the openmoko platform would be, IMNSHO

last I checked, the rest of the world only has GSM in one form or
