Agreed. A lot of people don't know about nor care about the Freedom aspect. We need to find ways to show it off. For example, when we have wifi, it'd be cool if the openmoko switched to using voip for calls, hence costing the customer nothing. Or if it could seamlessly send text messages for free over the internet (again wifi needed). Or if you could make it dead easy to use any MP3 [1] as a ring tone, instead of having to pay €2 for each one. Consumers will like this, but they know that phone companies would sell a phone like this. We could use this to show off that the OpenMoko is *your* phone, not the phone companies phone. [1] yes yes I know about mp3s. -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFGZTOyfM8hGU8tATMRAlNXAKCvDd6vYu795ejhl3TCTTA4kOIORgCg+D6X qa70tL7pu2G8m5H9iUdS1Sg= =4PwA -END PGP SIGNATURE- ___ OpenMoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Florent THIERY wrote: Just a thought: on macbooks, apple uses the hard drive's acceleration sensors (normally, safety function) as input device. Wanna tilt your neo? :) Someone wrote a programme that'll emit star wars light saber noises when you swing your laptop around. It'd be cool to have something like that for the openmoko. :) Rory signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ OpenMoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
Apple iPhone ads
Apple have released a few ads for their OpenMoko competitor, the locked down iPhone. Direct links: http://movies.apple.com/movies/us/apple/iphone/how_to/apple-iphone-how_to_640x496.mov http://movies.apple.com/movies/us/apple/iphone/never_been/apple-iphone-never_been_640x496.mov http://movies.apple.com/movies/us/apple/iphone/calamari/apple-iphone-calamari_640x496.mov It shows off some of the functionality that can be had with a touch screen and tilt sensors. I like how the photo viewer and scrolling is done with the touch screen. signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ OpenMoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Jim Thompson wrote: Comments don't sell phones, applications do. Once we have functional hardware, we can create better software, and the combination of these is far better than any amount of hype or PR. Agreed. The iPhone will be available in about a month with a selection of polished and integrated applications. We should hold off on a major promotional push until the OpenMoko platform is at a similar stage. If we could get a button like that on the side of the neo phone, dasher would be great. A little scroll wheel like on mice or on the side of a BlackBerry would be good for Dasher. Scrolling is a common operation, it'd be cool to have it on the OpenMoko. AFAIK the video iPods have hardware decoding chips, so the iPod isn't decoding the video. Which is why they can only play certain kinds of video codecs. Re: OpenMoko light web server
Matthew S. Hamrick said the following on 16/04/07 18:11: At first people rejected the idea as being silly. I mean seriously, why would you ever want to put a web server on an embedded device, right? One of the advantages of web applications vs desktop applications is that you can make some kind of web applications much quicker than with desktop applications. We've all seen those 'Make a blog in 20 minutes with $WEB_FRAMEWORK', everything from the databases to the GUI is quite simple to set up and get going. Kiwi (http://www.async.com.br/projects/kiwi) for pygtk comes close to this on the desktop.
