Re: [2008.12] Kustomizer 0.2 released

2009-02-09 Thread Samuel Pereira

Hi,

How you create desktop folders ?

Thanks,
Samuel

Hi!

A new release of Kustomizer is made, see
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Kustomizer

Kustomizer is a script that converts your clean OM 2008.12
installation on Openmoko Freerunner into a usable
phone/pda/toy/something.
The script is licensed with GPLv2 licence. The applications that it
installs around the Net might have other licenses, check the original
sites for more information.
The first time you run Kustomizer, it installes opkg.org repository,
Illume-theme and terminal keyboard, files for better call audio
quality, xterm. Also a CPU resource bug is fixed (qpe). A restart is
required for this to take effect and Kustomizer will do this for you.
The second run will install the rest: loads of cool applications,
GPRS, link map direcories from µSD card, mokoservices and tap/untap
etc. You don't have to make the second run if you don't want.

Changelog:

# Version 0.2 - 2008-02-06
# CHANGELOG IN THIS VERSION
# (new) two run system:
# 1st run: illume-theme, wrench, qwerty are installed, opkg.org,
storage.conf/qpe-bug fixed. Then restarted
# 2nd run: user needs to start Kustomizer again (and switch
suspend/dim off!!) - the rest is installed
# Rewriting the instructions
# General cleaning
# (new) ntpclient
# (new) http://www.opkg.org/package_121.html - MokoMaze
# (new) ttf-liberation-mono (vala-terminal uses this)
# (new) battery http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Forcing_fast_charge_mode
# (new) runs /media/card/customscript - the user can add his own stuff there
# (new) automatic prevention of suspend dimming
# (update) yaouh - version update
# (update) neon - version update
# (remove) Finnish keyboard layout dictionary
# (remove) custom scripts from card
# (remove) cellhunter - on FSO-based only?
# (remove) Guitartune - on FSO-based only and libfft fails to install
# (remove) fourier - libfft fails to install
# (remove) zomg and appmanager - less used..
# (remove) pingus - doesn't install
# (remove) mumpot - useless for most
# (remove) usbmode - battery replaces most of this
# (fix) watch checkrate changed from 1s to 2s
# (fix) libglade-2.0 - libglade-2.0-0

Re: Linball (Linux Pinball) game on Openmoko Neo

2009-01-21 Thread Samuel Pereira

Hi,

Thanks for the game.

I have created a install script that creates a desktop icon for launch
the game.
Download the game and after download install script here:
http://www.opkg.net/linball/linball-install.tar.gz

Before install, edit linball.sh and change linball_path, to the folder
where you extract linball game.

See README for more notes.

Good games,

Samuel Pereira

Hi!,

The last year we wrote a pinball game for a contest and now
we want to share a version for Neo devices.

You can download the tar.gz package from :
http://linball.sf.net/linball-openmoko.tar.gz

The README-openmoko.txt file inside the package has the simple
instructions, or at :

http://linball.sourceforge.net/README-openmoko.txt

Ah, the mandatory video to know how to play:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5cycCaEdl0
But it is very easy: just use the touchscreen :-)

Have fun!

Rafa
PS. http://linball.sf.net is the home page.

OK, I'm using the later version of E17 and friends that Rasterman

Hmm - pimlico looks much nicer than qtopia-contacts.

Any package for this?

Rather than develop new generic framework that can be configured to do
anything (paroli and friends) - could we not write a dialler that uses
this contact management for a quick and easy solution?

It's in OE and the package is e.g. at

I already have swap configured.

I've never used debian or openoffice on my freerunner, maybe it's possible, I

Maybe... I can use AbiWord without problems.

daily testing images info and some text if you want to read

2008-12-14 Thread Samuel Pereira
Hello,

Do you have any place where you put the changes that you have made in every
daily image?
http://downloads.openmoko.org/daily/testing

I read a lot of emails from people telling that FreeRunner dont have the basic
things working...
I have flash a lot of versions, to test and to find what is the best for me...

And the last one, is the daily testing image with Om, from 11/12/2008.
I can say that i'm very happy with this version, and is only testing, not a
release.

I can make/receive calls, and send/receive sms - Basic to a mobile right?
I have calculator, calendar, text editor, file browser, web Browser, terminal,
and a basic piano also :)

I have a GPS receiver, that work great with TangoGPS, in a good place, i can
get a fix, on less than 5 minutes with GPS turned ON.
I have Wifi, in my home and places with wireless i can use it... and works
great.
Suspend/Resume, works great too.

The battery life, is almost 2 days...

I think this is more than basic!

 Dear community,

Here is the note I kept about the current testing image. Part of it
was already in the status update I sent before. I modified a bit to
match the current situation and put it here so it could be archived.
Please remember that since it's not in stable repo, it is a subject to
change. What I wrote here only applies to the testing image for the
 last couple days.

 Upgrade from Om2008.9
 -

Note: you can also flash new image in
 http://downloads.openmoko.org/daily/testing

Note: only upgrade from a clean Om2008.9 image is tested.

 sed -i -e 's%Om2008.8%testing%' /etc/opkg/*.conf
 /etc/init.d/xserver-nodm stop
 screen -DR
 opkg update
 opkg -force-overwrite upgrade
 # please ans Y to all questions
 # the sshd (dropbear) will restart, so you need to reconnect and do
 # 'screen -DR' again
opkg upgrade # just in case
 shutdown -r now

To get the fastest boot time you also need to remove the following
 packages:

 opkg remove task-base-nfs task-base-smbfs task-base-bluetooth \
 task-base-usbgadget avahi-daemon avahi-autoipd blueprobe \
 usb-gadget-mode portmap exquisite exquisite-theme-freerunner \
 exquisite-themes

 Known problems about upgrade

 * Dropbear restart during opkg upgrade

 * some obsolete packages (like kernel modules) still left in system

 * will purge your incompatible e config, so you might need to set
   stuffs like suspend time again.

 Known issues

 * usb network won't work at first boot if you flash new image (#2096)

 * Illume sigsegv (#1767) - make sure you use asu theme if you use
software_16 engine. If you want to use illume theme, you must
switch to 'software' engine via illume config (in the upper shelf)

 * must remove 'ro' in kernel boot parameter if you use sd boot.

 * Most of the http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Om_2008.8#Known_Issues
   are still there.

Changes related to the dismissed optimization team
 --

#1267: echo AT%N patch applied, credit of Treviño

 Touch screen driver enhancement: see
 http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/devel/2008-October/002822.html

 #2031: Scroll list enhancement.

There are still many todo items left on my list and some items half
done, but we didn't have enough time to finish them all. Sorry.

 Echo

No definitive software solution yet. A way to improve it is:

 control.4 Speaker Playback Volume in
 /usr/share/openmoko/scenarios/gsmhandset.state

the max value is 127, 95 works best on my neo. With volume level 3 or
4 in qtopia dialer, the other side can only hear a minor trace of echo
while I get good audio quality.

 John

To get the fastest boot time you also need to remove the following
 packages:

 opkg remove task-base-nfs task-base-smbfs task-base-bluetooth \
 task-base-usbgadget avahi-daemon avahi-autoipd blueprobe \
 usb-gadget-mode portmap exquisite exquisite-theme-freerunner \
 exquisite-themes

 Known problems about upgrade

 * Dropbear restart during opkg upgrade

 * some obsolete packages (like kernel modules) still left in system

 * will purge your incompatible e config, so you might need to set
   stuffs like suspend time again.

 Known issues

 * usb network won't work at first boot if you flash new image (#2096)

 * Illume sigsegv (#1767) - make sure you use asu theme if you use
software_16 engine. If you want to use illume theme, you must
switch to 'software' engine via illume config (in the upper shelf)

 * must remove 'ro' in kernel boot parameter if you use sd boot.

 * Most of the http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Om_2008.8#Known_Issues
   are still there.

#1267: echo AT%N patch applied, credit of Treviño

 #1489: qtopia volume bar

#69: boot time scripts. Some qtopia modifications as well.

 #1347, #2113: userspace suspend/resume

 Touch screen driver enhancement: see
 http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/devel/2008-October/002822.html

 #2031: Scroll list enhancement.

There are still many todo items left on my list and some items half
done, but we didn't have enough time to finish them all. Sorry.

 Echo

No definitive software solution yet. A way to improve it is:

 control.4 Speaker Playback Volume in
 /usr/share/openmoko/scenarios/gsmhandset.state

the max value is 127, 95 works best on my neo. With volume level 3 or
4 in qtopia dialer, the other side can only hear a minor trace of echo
while I get good audio quality.

 John

Re: qwerty keyboard

2008-12-11 Thread Samuel Pereira
Hi,

Try this,

   Turn off built-in qtopia keyboard
   add export QTOPIA_NO_VIRTUAL_KEYBOARD=1 in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/89qtopia

The testing image dont have this disabled.

Change to the illume theme - instructions on the wiki

To stop the other kb's from appearing unexpectedly:
 opkg list_installed|grep keyboard.

Uninstall the numbers and default - leave only the terminal one. I cant
be more specific as I have already done so!

You will get an occasional flash as it tries to switch, but it comes
 back with the terminal.

Downside is if you go back to asu, you dont have a keyboard - no great
loss as with the standard keyboard its unusable anyway. This may be
fixable, but I have not looked further.

i ma not talkig about the different illume keyboards, i am talking about
the QTOPIA keyboard (btw i know how the illume kbd works and tweaked the
layout a little in my past image - it is not necessary to remove de
default keyboard if you dont want to use it as default for messages, ect...)

Re: Om2008.9 GPS Fix some help, please

2008-12-10 Thread Samuel Pereira
Hi,

I'm using Om2008.9, and now i see that i only get a fix outside, and in
a place without many buildings or trees.
I'm using TangoGPS and i already have download the maps, and i can use
it in my car, he shows the route, and the speed, its work great!

I get this fix, but if mobile suspend i lose it, every time i need to
use gps i must find a fix right?

Thanks,
Samuel

Find a place about 80 feet from anything higher than the Freerunner.
Leave the freerunner sitting for about 20 minutes, and you should be
able to get a fix. Also, try to get the AGPS data from ublox if you're
using a distribution which does not save the almanac.

Other times, i can get nothing...

 Any solution for this?
This can happen on different locations?

make sure you're outside, the freerunner is not in a pocket, bag, etc.
and that there are no trees/buildings nearby. also, stand still till
 it gets a fix

all these will help reduce time to first fix, after which you can move
around, put it in your pocket, and so on, and it will keep the fix

i hear manhole covers make good aerials, although this may be a myth -
i imagine any large metal object will do the same
