Re: No more optimization team
I opted for the G1, partly for the reasons you've given, but mainly because it turned out to be available as a free upgrade from my old handset. I can't say I'm terribly happy with it. I haven't had my hands on a Freerunner yet for comparison, but depending upon what you want to do with your phone, you may find that the Freerunner gets there first, or has already got there. Is the G1 having problems calling, sending/receiving sms or sound issues? If anyone in the Netherlands is interested in buying my Freerunner please contact me. I'm not a good advocate for the movement anymore, it will probably will be better if someone with a fresh attitude owns it. Based on my experience owning a G1, I'd suggest you try out whatever phone you're planning to use instead before you ditch your Freerunner. Also look at the forums, etc, to see some of the issues people are having. There's no perfect phone out there at the moment. Not looking for a perfect phone, but the basic stuff should be working. Nobody showed up to buy my phone yet, so I might try some images in a few days. I think I will try hackable:1and SHR. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
Re: No more optimization team
The goal of the optimization team was getting us a workable phone. I've installed the testing version yesterday and run into a lot of issues (echo, buzz, not able to wake up) I love the idea of this phone, the openness, the capabilities, but my patience has been stretched beyond tolerance. I have waited more than 2 years for an open phone. Now I have one, I can't use it and I will probably have to wait another half year before the phone will be able to do what any basic phone should be capable of. It is frustrating to see the appearance of great phones like HTC touch or even an iPhone that can do not only basic stuff, but also have the fun part from day one. Android phones are starting to appear. The HTC G1 is not available yet (in the Netherlands), but will be soon. It might not be as open as Openmoko, but it works, has got great features and it is open enough for me.. I'm really dissapointed, it feels like losing a bit of faith in a good cause. If anyone in the Netherlands is interested in buying my Freerunner please contact me. I'm not a good advocate for the movement anymore, it will probably will be better if someone with a fresh attitude owns it. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
[todays testing image] can't enter sim
Hi, I've just installed the daily testing image http://downloads.openmoko.org/daily/testing/. I have no idea which distro this is, 2008.9? Some more information (e.g. a readme.txt) would have been nice. Anyway.. after installing I needed to enter a SIM pincode and the only thing I can choose from are letters! Would be nice if someone could tell me how I can install a usable keyboard without unlocking my simcard on another phone. My old phone just died on me... Thanks. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
Re: [todays testing image] can't enter sim
Thanks! Works indeed. Can't say that for the image itself though... already had to remove my battery once to reset the phone and got complaints about echo and buzz. Re: consider buying Neo Freerunner
Frankly speaking I'm not sure anymore if the bugs are only software related. As long as there is no image that has stable phoning capabilities I would not advise anyone to buy one. The hardware might be able to provide it in the future, but the unstable software haven't proven itself yet. Only if you really want to support OM / Free software by buying one (this is one of my main reason for buying it) you could do that. For now my money is a donation for the good cause and I still hope to get the best phone ever in return. So to summarize, if you want to play it safe wait for GTA03. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
Re: Back to the basics: improving user experience
The problem with some of the comments on images, are people not using the phone to the extend as others do. I need my phone, also for business reasons. I receive and send sms messages and also phone during driving a car and in crowded surroundings. There are also people praising an image after a 2 hour testrun. I also praised Qtopia 4.2 before someone started complaining about echo and missing some sms messages and the phone went in coma once in a while. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

So to summarize, if you want to play it safe wait for GTA03. How do you know that they'll not go through the same process with GTA03 that we've all been doing with GTA02? Wasn't GTA02 supposed to be the stable version? You're right. I should have said something else. It often takes several boots before the pin dialog comes up. If you forget while waiting and it does come up but its awhile until you get to it, it will hang so you have to reboot anyway. Leaving the phone on and registered for hours doesnt seem to help - not sure how vodafone australia takes to retry messages but surely its less that 12 hours. The only way to stop crashes is not to use the thing! No GPS, no wireless, no phone calls, and definitely never send/receive an sms :) I suspect the event/0 thread is at the root of a lot of this so I am waiting a fix for that. I dont think I am alone in this - hopefully the new focus means that these issues can be dealt with. I am a little concerned though that you think things like boot time is important enough to mention, but not basic issues like being able to reliably make a phone call. Though a faster boot means less time wasted going through multiple bootups to get the thing registered. :) I should mention that 2007.2 seemed more stable and mature than 2008 anything still is up until work stopped on it. BillK Totally, totally agree! Who cares a beep about wifi , speed, gps, accelerometer, booting time when the phone itself doesn't work. Please fix this issues first, use the precious developing time for these priorities , so whe can finally use the phone for daily use. Re: The Lost Openmoko Community
I agree with what you are saying. When I bought the phone I knew there were some issues, but I had confidence in the hardware. I also had the impression it wouldn't take much time to be able to use it as a very basic phone. Maybe I was wrong with my assumption. Even the so called reliable and stable qtopia had missing sms messages, picking up a call and no sound, lost pin enter screens, echo and resume not functional. Would be nice to have one basic image with a focus on these issues. Even if it slowed down development. I guess developers also need a phone, don't they? When people complain about their FR not being usable as a phone, they get answers like this one: ``I appreciate that many of you purchased the FR to use as your daily phone. But I really believe that the magic of Openmoko comes from what we do with this platform that is different from, and way beyond, a mere phone.''[1] Exaggerating just a bit, it sounds like: ``My FR is not working as a phone!'' - ``Well son, it was never meant to be a phone.'' That's just one random example but to me it feels like the general direction of many OM staff postings. So to pick up my earlier point: Why does openmoko.com not explicitly state that the phone's software is not ready for reliable daily use? There should also be a note about the possibility that the FR with your provider in your region will be suffering from GSM buzz. Thus being unusable as a phone. Re: The Lost Openmoko Community
I think the guys from OM are really working hard to get us a great phone. I'm not always sure if they got the same priorities as we have. For me the most important thing right now is a working pone. Until I've seen some reports of more than 1 person that an image has got phoning, smsing and battery under control I'm not going to use mine. I'd like to file in bug reports, but hey.. these are so obvious I don't care about investing more time in the phone. It's collecting dust right now, and I'm using a phone I know I can count on. So instead of bringing us everything, bring us less, but stable. That said, I still have confidence in the team and I'm sure we will see something amazing in the (hopefully) near future. Re: Stable Distro Recommendation for Business trip
I have just installed qtopia-4.3.3-snapshot-09012242 I expect this one to be pretty stable. Have been using qtopia for a while now and the only major issue for me was not receiving all sms messages. That should have been taken care of with this release. In my day-to-day life I'm usually near a land-line, so these haven't been serious problems.
