Re: A mailing list for FLOSS-GPS community?

2008-09-20 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Just to make sure you know that there has is now a list at osgeo.org:
http://wiki.osgeo.org/index.php?title=FOSS-GPS

So join in, introduce yourself and let people know what software you
use or develop.

(I posted a new thread here but just wanted to make sure you get it if
you follow this thread)

I 'd like to see something else in the address than groups.google.com
or similar.. Something.. Well, you know, more open source.

So I've mailed the osgeo-discuss mailing list (see
http://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/discuss/2008-September/004317.html )
with no answer so far. I'll let you know if I get a reply. But I too
agree that the list would be a perfect match for their profile.

he, maybe we could change it to open source or similar :) But let's
see what's their answer..

If there's enough interest in starting a mailing list we can host it @
openarchaeology.net

Let me know if that would be desired.

Re: A mailing list for FLOSS-GPS community?

2008-09-18 Thread Brian Wilson
I asked the maintainer of the freegis.org site if he knew of a list
targeted at gps and he did not.

I tried to post to the "GPS Software Hub" google group and the posting
is being held in the moderation queue. (Moderation is fine but someone
has to do the moderating so that the messages go out in a timely
fashion.) I don't have a good feeling about how that group is being
used and maybe we should not be hijacking it for software development.
It's had more of an end-user focus.

I am not a big fan of Google but I suggest hosting the list there
because it actually works quite well. I especially like the RSS
feature.

On the other hand OSGEO is a really good group, I like there projects
and people.
Mapserver, GRASS, QGIs ..

Flip a coin. You decide.

But can we not use the word "FLOSS" in the group description? That
just makes me think of dental hygiene.

Here are the lists on gnmane that have 'gps' in their name:

gmane.comp.hardware.gps.opensource :

This is about an opensource gps baseband software receiver. Nothing of
interest for openmoko as the embedded ublox is already doing the job.
This is working on an old GecPlessey chip (not sure at the spelling,
former GPS Builder for old timers like me who know a bit about the GPS
field). Whenever Openmoko wants to switch to a cheaper and lighter gps
chipset, that would be nice IMO. This is the solution used by ASUS in
one of its ultra laptop. Of course the chip in the ASUS requires Windows
and a proprietary optional software to work.
The list is very low traffic.

gmane.comp.linux.gps

This is about gpsdrive AFAIU.

gmane.comp.hardware.gps.gpsd.* :

This is about gpsd.

That's all I know,
Abdel.

I think the GPS software and maps is more relevant but I'd very much
like to include the FLOSS approach there somehow, for example in the
name or at least in the description..

I'm will ask if osgeo would be interested in hosting this list. They
also have wiki available which would be useful..

There are existing groups that are relevant. They are both low traffic
right now and I think for the purposes you suggest the first one might
be appropriate. I am already a subscriber so I will ask how they feel
about it being used this way.

At Google Groups -- "GPS Software and Maps!!!
This is a global community for GPS users, researchers, geocatchers,
GPS manufacturers, GPS application developers, GIS people to share and
discuss their problems with each other and try to find possible
solutions."

This one is oriented towards creating maps for existing devices, such
as Garmin handhelds

At Yahoo! groups -- "GPS MAP AUTHORS is a consortium for those who use
GPS ( Global Positioning System ) hardware and software to create and
publish maps, charts, trail and tour guides."

Much as I am a member of far too many mailing lists
already, I think that this would be a good idea. As
far as hosting goes, how about a Google or Yahoo
group? If people do not like that idea, it might be
possible for us at Sarai to provide hosting. Sarai
is a FLOSS organisation from India, and to get an
idea of the lists that we host currently, please see
