thanks for the pointer -- great tool!!!

 I installed but no icon on the desktop. It installed a desktop file and
 icon file in the correct place but nothing is displayed.

I had the same problem and it took me a while to find out that in

/usr/share/applications/battery.desktop

changing the line

Categories=Application;System;
to
Categories=Application;

makes the icon apear (at least for me;).

also have a look on

 http://docs.openmoko.org/trac/ticket/1718

in case of python (pygtk) errors...

I have no idea what's about the system category icons,
if/when/where the should show up. in my Om 2008.8 setup
I have two more such system desktop files:

  assassin.desktop
  qtopia-clock.desktop

any hints on the desktop icon/category stuff ?

 Even though both sources can easily handle a 500ma charge.

You shouldn't need to do anything special to make it charge from your
laptop, assuming you're using a new kernel, unless you're hitting a new
bug. Forcing fast charge mode worked around bugs in older kernels, but
  is now mostly just a dangerous hack for strange/broken hardware setups.

I'm charging mine via a laptop usb port as I type this, and didn't force
a charging mode. The included 1000ma charger is faster, but the laptop
also charges the battery.

Battery Charge Solution(Not)

charging when connected to a laptop or car charger.

The first one that is packaged up

I installed but no icon on the desktop. It installed a desktop file and
icon file in the correct place but nothing is displayed.

I attempted to try to run the program in a terminal window but the
keyboard is ABSOLUTELY WORTHLESS! Thats just an exercise in frustration.

I installed the Power Center solution

copy Power Center into /usr/bin and chmod u+x /usr/bin/power_center

copy Power Center Desktop fileinto /usr/share/applications

but it crashes when you run it.

If I can't charge the phone with a car charger or computer usb port its
worthless.
