BlackBerry to Openmoko
Hi all... Have some questions... I've been following Openmoko for a while now, Since the 1973 product... I heard Sean speak at the OpenExpo and have a few ?'s. 1. Sean stated at the expo that he still carries a BlackBerry, and that by June he expects that the OpenMoko will no longer lose incoming calls. Is the Openmoko at that point yet? 2. Currently, I'm a BlackBerry user (8700) ... carrier is T-mobile, and I use the following apps. (a) Address Book (Not sure if I can convert to .cvs, but will try this week) (b) eBible program (Genesis to Revelation... KJV) (c) eMail - I have at least 2 accts pushed to my Blackberry (d) text - (SMS) (e) Calendar, Tasks, Memo (f) Personal Finance - http://ascendo-inc.com/blackberry/personal-finance-manager.html I'm trying to get rid of my BlackBerry and go Openmoko. =^) ... I run Ubuntu on my Desktop. Do you think that I can get rid of my BlackBerry? Can I get the apps that I need? From what I've seen, I believe that I can get the basic apps that come with just about any phone, but what about the Personal Finance app. Ascendo is a pretty nice app. Can KMoney or something like that be installed on Openmoko? What about GnomeSword Bible? Would it be cheaper to buy the A6 from the Blowout Sale, and then have SDG fix the buzz issue, or am I better off buying the A7? Is the A7 just the A6 with buzz fix? I'm confused on this point. Thanks all. Thanks Sean. I just want to thank everyone that has worked on this project. You are all incredible people. G-d Bless you all. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
Re: BlackBerry to Openmoko
(a) Address Book (Not sure if I can convert to .cvs, but will try this week) afaik, contacts management is not integrated. though, work is going on in fso to do so. there are some contacts/task/calendar suites available, osmo for instance. (b) eBible program (Genesis to Revelation... KJV) what exactly does it ofer besides reading/searching? the most simple way would probably be, to convert the texts into frinst plucker format and use with fbreader or plucker. gnome sword is most likely to heavy. (c) eMail - I have at least 2 accts pushed to my Blackberry don't know the current state, there are clients available, but inhowfar the are really usable with the fr (screen estate, navigation), i don't know. (d) text - (SMS) yes. (e) Calendar, Tasks, Memo see a (f) Personal Finance - http://ascendo-inc.com/blackberry/personal-finance-manager.html a quick glance over debian's results to finance offers, besides kmymoney and gnucash, grisbi (http://www.grisbi.org/). while kmymoney and gnucash certainly will be both to heavy and hard to navigate, grisbi has an nokia 770 port. that may indicate, that usability with small screen/limited resources was considered. Would it be cheaper to buy the A6 from the Blowout Sale, and then have SDG fix the buzz issue, or am I better off buying the A7? Is good question -- since you have to pay for transport, the difference between a cheaper a6 and an a7 might decrease. additionally, every fix involves the risk of damage. after all, i'd advocate for getting an a7. the A7 just the A6 with buzz fix? I'm confused on this point. iirc, basically yes. but the a7 has a slightly modified layout with the buzz fix included already. ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

I don't trust the telephony apps in shr-unstable and om2009 though. I've missed calls recently on both. There was some ugly dbus and ousaged issues. In shr-unstable (and I think in om2009 too) dbus is now patched, and ousaged race is workaround. Since that my phone functionality on shr-unstable seems to be rock solid, and the only ophonekitd crash I had was caused by out of memory error ;) ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

I'll not go into technical details but keep in mind that using the FR you have to be prepared to live with an unstable environment! I never used Blackberry (and I would never use it due to severe security risks!) but I assume that the applications there do work! Having that in mind, don't expect Openmoko to provide you with a 'turn key solution'! Is a struggle but ... a NICE one :) ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
