Cool, you've fixed nearly all of my feedback already!

0.16 looks already better but IMHO the settings aren't that importat to stay
always as the very first element of the ui.
Wouln't it be better to move to as a normal icon to the system category?
Nearly everyone needs them just once.

Oh! And I've had another idea right now. What about dropping the drop-down-
list for the categories and use the GUI element (not sure how it's called)
that is also used by illume settings and elmphonelog for categories. IMHO that
would be a big improve in terms of usability and coolness as it is a very
finger friendly widget. It would have some sort of recognition value on illume
based systems.

Cheers,
Michael

  Well, it does balance the look by making it propotional. But I'll change
it if people feel that things would be better with the settings icon in
another category.

  Are you talking about the toolbar? Well, I'll lose a lot of screen space
that way wont I.

Hi,

Yes... The toolbar would use more space than the drop down list. But In my it
would be worth it.

Here is a quick mockup about how I could imagine it.

Anyways, you are the author, you decide.
This is just an Idea that I'd like to share with you.

Oh, and thanks for version 0.18!

That is really nice. Especially tasks integration. I'd like yours
two-in-one applications c_c :-)

And transparent icons...

  Thanks for the mockup. I quite like it - and it definitely makes better
use of the space available. Moving the clock up actually might save enough
space so that with the toolbar I actually still have the same amount of free
space available for the icons. Ok - watch for a release today with your
idea.

  @jahckal - I already have a tasks app - and I'm working on the integration
part. Actually I'm working on a service that would allow any app to post
messages to the home screen using dbus. Just that my understanding of dbus
is a little shaky - so its taking time. But I'm aiming at the service by
tomorrow.

  As far as transparent icons are concerned - it wont take much coding. But
I'm having trouble resizing the icon widgets in elementary. I can resize
photo widgets easily - so I'm using them - hence the white backing.

  Can some elementary guru help? How do I resize an elm_icon? Can't seem to
find an example :-(

Launcher/Home Page - proof of concept - release

2009-05-25 Thread c_c

Hi,
  Well, seeing as there scope for having a decent launcher / home page, I
thought I'll make one. The result - launcher is written in C and uses sqlite
and elementary. It works, provides some needed features and lacks a few.

 Features

 * Missed call indication
 * New SMS indication
 * Ability to set own wallpaper
 * Categorise applications and see them in categories

 Missing (but planned)

 * better placement of icons
 * launching feedback
 * notification dbus service
 * notification area

Help Needed

 * artwork
 * elementary related (layout mainly)
 * dbus service (maybe discuss on ML)
 * c based framework for adding widgets

Any other Ideas / Suggestions.

Re: Launcher/Home Page - proof of concept - release

2009-05-25 Thread Michael Zanetti
Hi,

Thanks for this app! It looks very promising on my SHR phone.

Here my first experiences:

Switching between categories works very fast. I noticed that switching to an
empty category sometimes moves the drop-down-list down so that one cannot
reach all entries.

The displaying of new sms and missed calls works well and also looks nice. It
would be great to insert some empty space between this and the categories.
Perhaps it would be even better using a new line for it.

It would be really great to have some sort of feedback when launching apps. I
always end up starting the apps twice.

It is not really multi tasking capable. IMHO it shouldn't wait for the started
apps.

Is it possible to make all entries in drop-down-lists the same width? I think
it would look way better. I also noticed this on other apps, so I think it's
an elm thing.

Its a great start. Keep it up!

Michael

Hi,

  Yup, I'm using an empty notification area between the top row and the
buttons as of now. Bad hack! So things get pushed off the screen.
  As far as the empty categories are concerned, the user can edit categories
and remove those he doesn't want. The new binary lets you do that. In fact
you can change the categories to whatever you want. Will release an updated
ipk today.

  I will be altering the layout somewhat to get better positioning. Yes,
there ought to be space between the categories and the icons. I actually
wanted the icons on the left extreme and the category hover on the extreme
right.

  That's required. Still thinking of how to do it though.

  Missed an ''. Should be fine with the new release coming out today.

  Elementary does that to minimise space usage. I can pad the list with
spaces - but it may not be exact. Does any elementary guru have a better
idea?

  All feeback / ideas welcome. This is not even alpha as of now. So go ahead
with your wishlists!

 And Thanks for all the kind words :-)
