I personally would 2nd the motion to try Android on Freerunner, had a great
experience up until I couldn't afford to pay the phone bill and stopped
playing around with it.

Since it wasn't mentioned as an alternative, you could also try Anroird on

No distro war, just another option you could try and see if it works out

Well, I've been running and administering linux desktop systems since
1993, so I don't think it's a matter of unix experience...

Maybe it's a matter of different expectations? Are you saying you've
never missed a call or found the FR in a state where it wasn't working
and had to hard-boot it? I was missing calls and sms's on a pretty
regular basis because the phone would hang and I'd get nothing until I
noticed and rebooted it...

I was using SHR the most before I gave up. I never tried QtMoko - I
had used QtEI for a while, but found it frustrating because most of
the interesting software for the FR didn't work on it, although I
understand they've fixed that in QtMoko. It was probably about as
stable a phone as SHR was.

The N900 lacks USB Host support at the hardware level.  I guess this
does not matter to you, but I might miss it because I have used USB Host
 multiple times on my FR.

Yeah, I'd never used host support on my FR, so that didn't matter to me much.

Just a word of warning - the FR is a very fun device to play with -

I've been using an N900 for a couple of months now, and am very happy

problem, then the N900 is probably out of reach...

Good luck.

Thanks for the ideas and input everybody. I am going to try using the FR
as my main cellphone, and I am aware of the 'buggy-ness' that this can
entail. I feel until I'm proven otherwise that I'm going to aim for this
though.

Also, I appreciate all the suggestions and pointers to other phones for
sale, but I have acquired a FR which should be arriving today - thanks to
a very generous person :)

Thanks for the advice :) I will see what OS the phone comes with, and I'll
play around with that for a bit. Then I will give QtMoko a try and see how
that works out. Reading over the disto info on the wiki it seems like
QtMoko is the crowd favorite, so I'm hoping it will be reliable as well :)

Looking to pick up a FreeRunner

2010-04-06 Thread swoody
Hello OpenMoko fans :)

I hope this post isn't out of line, but Craigslist and eBay were of no use.

I am in a bit of a predicament with my current, closed (bleh!) cell phone.
The screen stopped working, and incoming and outgoing calls have ceased as
well. I tried to have it replaced through my cellular carrier, but they are
trying to blame it on me saying that it must be abuse to the phone - with
the condition the phone is in physically, this is obviously not the case. So
I am rather ticked off with them. The good news is that this is a great
opportunity for me to finally make the jump to a *free* phone. Having been a
user of *Free* GNU/linux distros - Trisquel and gNewSense - my cell phone is
the last device I own that isn't GPL-friendly. I am hoping to use this
opportunity as a chance to learn more in the way of developing and getting a
chance to truly enjoy the benefits of *free* software.

Unfortunately, this is a pretty bad time as I can't afford to lay out
$200USD for a new FreeRunner. I'm a full-time student, and funds are indeed
short. I was hoping somebody out there may have an extra FreeRunner, or know
someone who is looking to part with one. I have no problems with
non-buzz-fixed models, as I would be very interested in doing this hack
myself, but I am equally open to the models with this fix. If you can help
me out here, or if you know someone who is looking to part ways with a
FreeRunner, I would truly appreciate if you got in touch with me. Please
feel free to email me directly if you wish, rather than replying to the
entire mailing list.

Thank you all in advance, and happy hacking!
