nope, we are, the mail hung in the mailman for quite a while because
often nobody finds the time to log into its webui and ack through
messages which landed in moderation.. e.g. not sent directly to the
list, but as bcc, or with huge attachments for example (as in this case)

since some public lists have quite a lot subscribers i think we should
keep this limits in place there. (and rather find a more systematic
process to work such stuff down. ;)

RE: Our new Main page of wiki

2008-06-01 Thread steve
Thanks Brenda,

I spent too many years teaching writing, so I had a small advantage. WRT
the sentence below Join Openmoko development.

I’ll go back and look at that. Generally, if it’s not necessary I cut it.

I removed the Dev Board QT2410, because it was my impression that it was out
of date and not critical. I could be wrong

on that, if people scream, then adjust.

Ideally I would like to see three branches

1. A product branch that forks to all past and future products.

2. A developer branch that forks to all matters software.

3. A community branch that forks to community issues, like projects, blogs,
wiki instructions, buying lists, etc

There is also some duplication in the various links that needs cleaning up

Dear Steve:
I notice that you edited the Main page of wiki.
The wording is better then me. I like it.
Thank you for doing this.
But I don't understand why you took off the sentence below Join Openmoko
development?
And development  board--QT2410?
Can you tell me why?

Actually , I know that our main page is too long. I would like to make whole
wiki site become short and organized.
But technically , I can't solve that problem in a very short time.
I just used the Google Analytic to find out the most popular page , then I
use the box, put the link all together.
Use the aggressive color and put the categories page on side bar, to make
pages easy to find.
I also use the Google Analytic to find out the most popular browser, use the
right tag, make sure most of them can use wiki more easily.
I got a lot of feedback here.

And now , Gismo is helping us to upgrade our wiki system.
After wiki system had been upgraded , I would start to work on server site.
For example , I would like to change the wiki skin. And page structure.
 I think I would need technical support. And I will ask anyone who can help
me.
Anyway, the real meaning of Wiki is collaboration.
Thank for you help , and hope you can understand what I am doing now.

 It's not just the titles that are awkward, all the text sounds kind of
 awkward. Brenda, don't be offended at this, but your first language is
 not English is it? Perhaps you should leave the content of the
 consumer-facing pages (at least, the ones that are in english) to
 someone who has English intuition. I know, Openmoko is supposed to be
 about Openness, but this is a little ridiculous.

   This is a compromise between too big and including people which use

   right?

   Adjusting the font size is easy (ctrl-+), except if you use IE (you
   have to go on View - Text size - Largest if you use IE).

   Some people use special glasses when they use the computer... you
   cannot expect this wiki to use 24pt text. People like to see more than
   just a few words at a time. I want to see the whole page without
   horizontal scrolling and the whole index table without vertical

   I do not have larger resolution that 800x600 here (very little

   That is just my opinion.

I will be editing the front page of the wiki in due course to bring it in
line with the .com. Brenda's main focus has always been on REORGANIZING the
content. Once she is done, I will wordsmith it. I just got access a couple
days ago. Most of my focus has been on the .com site and writing some
articles of late on our opening the CAD files.
So, some patience please.

Yes, It is a bit long. And it always has been. Brenda is working the
Structure of the site ( like Edward scissorshand trimming kudzu) and I told
wolfgang I would do my marketing thing on the front page. I will of course
make some suggestions on organization and structure ( you know me raster )
but for now, I will let it rest, as I have other matters to attend to.
The current structure is rhapsodic and so is not easily maintained,
especially as new products come out. So, I'll share some thoughts later.

Re: Our new Main page of wiki

2008-05-02 Thread clare

First Congratulations to Brenda, the Wiki is improving all the time.
I thought she had an impossible task.

I think the pages are well written, in good clear English.
I notice that many people, on IRC for example, for whom English is
a second language, are far more meticulous in their expression than
those of us who spoil English all our lives.
For example the snippet from the complaint would not have been included
by someone who had to *learn* English.

It's not just the titles that are awkward, all the text sounds kind of
awkward. Brenda, don't be offended at this, but your first language is
not English is it? Perhaps you should leave the content of the
consumer-facing pages (at least, the ones that are in english) to

I think that on the top it could be something like this on the page:

I'm using 1280x1024, like probably many or the most people out there
(default resolution for all 19, most 17 and some 20 inch displays). Not
everybody has a WUXGA capable monitor, so if the resolution is too high and
you are not capable of setting the fontsize and so on in your browser to
make it fit for you: get another monitor.
The wiki uses 14pt. Standard size - and also the size I use normally is
12pt.

Perhaps it would make sense for the wiki pages to fit the horizontal
resolution of the Freerunner. I would image that it may be an often visited
site by the phones when people are getting started.

I agree to that.

Plus thinking about the page beeing viewed mostly from users with Linux on
their machines (web server stats anyone?). So it should be reviewed with
linux or at least with an alternative browser.

Hi thomas,

I don't know where you get the 14pt. The font-size in the body is
x-small (which size this ever is) and the font-size of the menu is 95%
or 1.1em.

But I just discovered, that Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox
display different results. In IE the fontsize of the menu is totally ok.
May be, that Firefox uses primarily .portlet and IE seems to use
p-navigation.

div class='portlet' id='p-navigation'

.portlet ul {
   line-height: 1.5em;
   list-style-type: square;
   list-style-image: url(navigation_bullet.gif);
   font-size: 95%;
   margin-top: 0px;
   padding-top: 3px;
}

#p-navigation {
   font-size: 1.1em;
}

Is it possible to fix this difference?

Greetings Bastian

I agree with the other few posters on this thread so far that the
colours have a bit too much contrast. Good design layout, but it is
somewhat difficult to read.

Another thing: Introduction for Openmoko sounds a little awkward. It
already has the title on the page as Openmoko Wiki and it says
Welcome to Openmoko, so there isn't really any confusion that the
Introduction is for Openmoko.

Good Work,

looks great to me...

the contrast make sense to put visible some items, but colors depends a lot
of the used screen to watch it... so maybe a lighter grey could be better ?

I think the structure is more readable now, older is more...not ticky tacky
but bric-a-brac I think... informations are not jumping on your eye :)
