What plans are there for I18N of Paroli? I'd like to already start
doing initial translations for various Paroli applications, but I do
not see gettext usage / .pot files etc yet.

I have to admit right now there are no plans as such. I guess using gettext
for the python things would not be too difficult,

Yes, it shouldn't, import gettext and [build_i18n] section in the
setup.cfg, but it would be good to setup early so that developers
learn to start using _(text) macro everywhere for strings and the
POT file generation is initialized.

however I do see a problem
with the text that is stored in the edc files + the grafik files used. And
afaik most of the text in paroli actually is in image files for now and thus
are compiled into the theme. Any solutions for this anywhere?

I have no idea I18N should work in Enlightenment edc files. It brought
to my mind the GOS based (and thus Enlightenment based) computer sold
on Walmart for mass markets, but it was only USA so they probably
didn't need translations for everything. Is it possible to avoid text
in edc files?

For images, I guess it would be okayish to use normal locale
information to open banner_LANGUAGE.png, like banner_fi.png, in all
places where such images with text are used, and give easy-to-change
GIMP .xcf files for the community where the text part can be easily
changed. .xcf so that the text would be editable and font type and
size would be in the file for changing, in addition to possibility of
having different layers. If there is text in an image, it's probable
they won't get changed that often so the translation burden should be
on ok level as well.

But I do not know about edc files. Does someone else have experience?

Just as a random example of a Python program using gettext, see
https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-installer/usb-creator/trunk

I recently patched it so that all aspects of i18n work there,
including getting .desktop file entries translatable via PO files.
build_i18n of setup.py is the key, see also setup.cfg and
deskop/usb-creator.desktop.in on how to handle .desktop files, and
finally of course some bit of the code to see gettext usage in action.

Since Paroli's .desktop files are currently all in one directory, and
applications tend to be small, I'd vote for one single .pot file for
the whole paroli at this point - it would collect all the translations
and also paroli would use a single translation domain paroli. Does
that sound sensible?

Would it be possible to post these updates on the community list every

do the same. I remember seeing some Paroli reports here but other than
that only very little information from openmoko:/

Paroli Testing (Was: Community Updates/February 20, 2009 released)

2009-02-20 Thread Scott Petersen

 - keep on fixing issues in MS2
 - continue working towards MS3
 - get the kbd to match paroli on the image

No need to wait. I have been using Paroli as my daily phone software on
FSO MS5 for almost 2 weeks. It has been extremely stable. A bunch of
functionality is not there yet but the one basic thing that has just
worked is as a phone. Dialing works, answering works, ringing works.

I was updating from GIT daily until a couple of days ago when the package
in unstable became available. I checked last night and the most recent
package was up to the very last commit in GIT so that synchronization is
working well.

And again if anyone is interested in helping out with paroli, contribute
code or test or or or ... Let us know!

I am interested in helping out with the project initially as a tester but
with code in the future as I figure this is a good excuse to learn python.
I haven't to date as there was nothing approachable or interesting enough.

The first thing I want to look at is the scrolling of contacts and
messages. Currently, trying to capture the thumb on the scroll bar is
exceedingly tedious. It will likely take me a couple of weeks to get
productive as I fit this in with the rest of my work and life.

Cheers
Scott Petersen

Great news! Thanks for sharing. Am more an sms guy myself so am trying
to get that up and running right now. mind you it kinda works already,
but I some nifty details are still missing.

Thanks to Angus again who has been very patient ;)

I hope we can fill that void, let me now if you have questions and/or
ideas. mirko-paroli on irc.

The scrolling issue comes from a bug in efl ... not sure if it is only
the python-bindings but my feeling is it is efl itself, but I couldn't
pin it down yet. We are going to play with the efl revision a bit next week.

Thanks again and please keep us updated :)
