Yes, I believe the backup i uploaded to
http://triveros.go.dyndns.org/qtopia/ should be echo-free. However, I do
not remember which kernel is that one using - probably om-testing 2.6.24
(and the backup should have the modules installed too). Also, this is an
internal backup, not one to put on your SD card.
You probably would prefer to use the following method to get an updated
rootfs.
get a FSO "console" image and its kernel (use 2.6.24, not 2.6.28 or you
will get weird issues with everything, especially suspend/resume), then
blast a qtextended tarball to it (i have a 4.4.3 snapshot built on that
same address, it's called qtefso.tgz) and then apply the echo patch from
http://www.csamuel.org/2009/01/08/echo-suppression-fix-for-qt-extended-442-on-openmoko-neo
I believe that 4.4.2 and 4.4.3 are binary-compatible so it should pose
no problem to use it.

good luck!

that is absolutely no release!
that image was built from the source snapshots a while ago, and probably
does not represent QtExtended's current state (i mean 4.4.3 release), so
I would wait for a proper build from the latest release instead.

No problem at all, besides, if there was a link in the wiki maybe I'd

[QtExtended] about bug reports

2009-03-10 Thread Tomas Riveros Schober
Considering that QtE is officially "dead", what shall we do about bugs
in the current (last) code?
shall we start a separate bug tracker in addition to the community git
repo? shall we report back to nokia using the usual tracker? should we
just send patches to the git repo (until a solution is found)?
It would be nice if we (the community) join efforts to keep QtE alive as
long as possible.

Franky,
It's great to see you making huge progress with QtEI, however, I have
some questions before trying your build.
1. Do incoming calls get answered using Speaker or Handset? On my phone
all incoming calls are answered using Speaker, which is very annying.
I've been having this problem since the time QtE was called Qtopia, and
no build has had it fixed.
2. Is power management working fine? If I change any settings on my
phone, suspend stops working.

Franky,
I've just installed your version of QtE and everything works very well
with one major exception,
the phone suspends while on calls! I'm using the rootfs from april 4th
(recommended in your script)
this is very, very bad!

[SHR] Missing icons after install

2009-04-17 Thread Tomas Riveros Schober
Hello,
I've just tried installing latest SHR-testing (which should be unstable
just merged into testing), and it works quite good. However, I cannot
find a way to launch certain apps (except than by using the terminal).
i.e. TangoGPS is nowhere to be found, but calling tangogps from the
terminal launches it correctly. Same thing happens with other apps shown
in the initial configuration screen, but somehow lost after booting to e.
Am I missing something incredibly stupid (it's been a while since I've
tried SHR), or does it work that way? If so, how can I get launchers for
those "missing" apps?

thanks in advance

should it be fixed by opkg upgrade or a .e removal or a full reflash?

Re: [QtExtended] Latest and greatest, progress mail 10

2009-04-28 Thread Tomas Riveros Schober
Franky,
Thanks for all your hard work! Do you think it would be a good idea to
adapt your script to "upgrade" installations? what I mean is that you
could pass an option to the script and it would only upgrade the qt
install and then apply relevant fixes (keyboard, prediction, etc), and
not everything else that would not be needed for an upgrade (opkg stuff,
fixing /etc/network, others). If that sounds good I will try to adapt
your script to do that and then report it back to you for approval

Microphone busted after buzz-fix

2009-06-14 Thread Tomas Riveros Schober
Hello List,

I have 2 freerunners and both were A5's. I have a friend that is
experienced soldering and doing reworks and he performed the buzz-fix on
both freerunners. However, one of those seems to have the microphone not
working anymore. The other Neo was fixed correctly (despite having
different resistors or whatever, the interference was reduced a lot).

Any suggestions on how to diagnose it correctly?
I already loaded the A7 state file (which works wonders on the other
neo), tried different distros.

Is there any kind of "warranty" (i know there's not an official one)
from openmoko in case i need to ship it back to taiwan or something?

Since I'm in Chile and no local distributor is available, I had to
perform the fix "unoficially".

Thanks for the time

Well, you can always build it from source
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Qtopia#Installation_option_4:_updating_from_source
however, it is not clear to me if we _have_ to start from the current
rootfs (meaning flashing QtExtended, then compiling and scp'ing the
updated binaries into the neo), or if we can start from, say, a
"minimal" rootfs (fso console comes to mind) and then install QtE on it.

no, but my gprs works fine after setting it up using the gui (setting
the dns myself using the opendns one) and manually editing
/etc/resolv.conf and /etc/ppp/resolv.conf to the opendns values since
somehow only using the gui managed to connect but not resolve names
properly.

Thanks for your work!
I've been trying to build QtE too, however, I'm trying to build it using
FSO as the base image, using the FSO toolchain as mwester's page.
However I've not been successful so far (it complains about not finding
dbus-1, I will be trying to debug it and get it to work all day today so
I'll report back if i get to something)
The main idea is to modernize the underlying rootfs for qtextended, so
we can benefit from all the kernel bugfixing and all that (and faster
boot times!)

regards
Tom

PS. your instructions are indeed very helpful

[QtExtended] Report on 4.4.3 src on FSO

2009-02-21 Thread Tomas Riveros Schober
Hello list!
as some might have noticed, I've been struggling with my efforts to
build QtExtended on FSO as specified on mwester's page[1]. Today I've
been successful on building the whole pack of stuff and run it on my
neo. So here's my report to whoever is interested (skip down to just
check out what works and what doesn't):

Built on Ubuntu 8.04, using backported Qt.

First thing I built was FSO, but since fso-testing was not compiling
(some packages were missing from the src repos), i decided to compile
fso-m5. All was good (takes a long time!!).
So i built the images, then built the nox version and then the
toolchain. All was good.
To build QtExtended was another story. No matter what I did, it would
always complain about not finding libdbus-1 when using FSO's toolchain.
I tried all the pkg-config wizardry I could come up with but nothing
worked in the end, so I ended up compiling QtE using nokia's toolchain.
If anyone got any tips on how to compile QtE using FSO's toolchain, I'd
love to know them.
So after everything was built I flashed the whole pack into the phone
and installed QtE as mwester's instructions (thanks!), only to realize
that 2.6.28 is terribly supported under QtE, and would kill the screen
upon resume from suspend, and also, most thing would freeze up and just
die a painful death.

Then I flashed a 2.6.24 kernel from openmoko's daily build[2], together
with the modules and console image, then installed QtE again and bam!
all was working. This is what I've tested so far:

working good:
suspend and resume
power management changes (which didn't work properly on 4.4.2)
UI speed (way better than 4.4.2)
boot speed (boots in under a minute in my phone)
GSM (it unregistered once, maybe a one-time issue), but phone quality is
superb, and it never happened again.

not working so good:
Wifi (can register, but won't update /etc/resolv.conf so no dns, and it
will stop working after a suspend, to never come back)

did not test yet:
GPRS (however, it was working perfectly in 4.4.2 so I assume this is
still the case)
GPS
Bluetooth (same as gprs, was fine before)

so, if anyone was thinking about compiling 4.4.3 snapshots to get better
networking...well, I cannot say I reccomend it since it did not fix the
dns issues that 4.4.2 has, but it is indeed way speedier.
If anyone wants to try it, I can upload the whole set of images
somewhere, or maybe a full backup of my phone so people can try it for
themselves (just please notice that this is highly experimental and
probably not very well built)

hope I didn't bore you with this lengthy post.

2009-02-22 Thread Tomas Riveros Schober
You don't really get a rootfs after the compilation, but more like a
bunch of binary files that you have to blast to a proper rootfs to be
able to start qtopia.
I can share my experiment with qtopia on fso if you guys want, but it is
just a backup of my phone, so it's nothing fancy

Re: Qt Extended 4.4.2 SDK Build Instructions

2009-02-22 Thread Tomas Riveros Schober
That jffs2 file will give you a barebones fso install, to which you have
to copy your compiled qtopia package and then untar, unzip and install.
You can follow these instructions to do that (taken from mwester's website):

ssh to the phone
(do these ones on the phone)
wget http://moko.mwester.net/download/apm-qtopia-v2.tgz
tar -xzf apm-qtopia-v2.tgz
cd apm-qtopia-v2
./install.sh
| ln -s /etc/init.d/qpe /etc/rc5.d/S98qpe
||mkdir /opt/Trolltech/Qtopia|
|
(do this on the host)
scp /path/to/qtextended.tgz r...@192.168.0.202:/opt/Trolltech/Qtopia

(do this on the phone)
cd ||/opt/Trolltech/Qtopia|
|tar xzf qtextended.tgz
cp ||/opt/Trolltech/Qtopia/qpe.sh /etc/init.d/qpe

Now restart and QtE will boot next time instead of the console image.
I have a prebuilt qtextended 4.4.3 snapshot tarball in
http://triveros.go.dyndns.org/qtopia/qtefso.tgz in case you don't feel
like building your own tarball (this is vanilla, no patches applied)

Tom

I don't get this question...if you mean which distro is the QtE image
based on, it's based on 2008.x unstable

You can get a basic console system from
http://downloads.freesmartphone.org/ and selecting the "console" image.
After you flash that you can install QtE on it like an application.

good! that should give you both the QtExtended binaries and the
QtExtended SDK

I don't think QtE can use OpenGL, since it's using the framebuffer to
draw the screen. It doesn't use X, so i believe that you're out of luck
in that regard.

Yes usb networking is running after the second reboot.
to fix the echo you have to patch it according to

I used to have kernel panics too, and it was due to an incomplete

finished the download with wget -c and flashed again and everything was

hope its something like that and you solve your issue

Re: Mac USB Networking

2008-09-11 Thread Tomas Riveros Schober
What im doing is using a vmware virtual machine with linux mint
installed (it was the only image i had lying around in my hd),
so i just share the network using NAT and then the trick in the wiki
(linux simple networking) after plugging the FR with the virtual machine
focused.
that way i can df-utils and get usb network to the FR.

hope it helps!

Re: The Lost Openmoko Community

2008-10-04 Thread Tomas Riveros Schober
My brother feels exactly like you.
he's not really a techie and depends on me for most stuffhowever i
tought him how to report bugs and watch the tracker, but he gets
dissapointed that whenever he tries to report something its either
already there or he doesnt have the logs required.
Thing is, he packed his freerunner in the box and saved it for when its
more developed (aka, ready).
I'm more of a tinkerer so im happy to have a half-assed phone, with lots
of noise and echo and not a good alarm (i had to buy something else to
wake me in the morning reliably), and usually flash every other distro
every other day and test stuff.

However, I do believe that there's lack of community communication with
openmoko...we dont know their plan or priorities (ie, for many many
users, first and foremost we need a phone without noise or echo, but
there seems to be little done by openmoko in that area).
Also showing lack of focus is the releases. There have been some patches
that dont appear to be implemented in 2008.x but FDOM has had it since
the beginning (gtk fix, dns resolv, or the infamous keyboard debate)

I think that's it for now, sorry for the long post, but it's 2 users
around here.
