I can confirm the occasional desktop freezes with the testing ppa
version of compiz. It seems the flickering doesnt appear anymore but in
my case desktop froze a few times with keyboard not responding at all
and mouse pointer beeing able to move in single steps every few seconds.

after today's update I rebooted the machine and after login it load only the 
desktop background, no Unity components or carpets.
On gnome environement all is working well.
