Nope. At 1:06am est still erroring out here in Firefox, Opera, and MSIE7.

What's even stranger - both tracert and ping work, resolving to
208.67.217.132! No, http://208.67.217.132 doesn't work in a browser.

Re: [CGUYS] Digital TV

2008-01-10 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

The VHF range is huge in the way of bandwidth.

Many people forget that part of the FM band is contained in this
spectrum. If you have a local channel 6, tune to FM 87.9 or so and
you will get that station on air.

One of the ways that they have allowed multiple FM stations on the
air is by limiting their power (or output wattage) and by tuning antennas.

The local FM station has a very wide east west pattern with their
antenna. If it were aimed north it would walk all over Montgomery AL
stations, however it does not reach much farther north than 50
miles. However it reaches over 100 miles west.

These same restriction can be used to make sure that adjacent VHF TV
stations that still exist will not step on or get stepped on whoever
gets the empty frequencies.

I do not think any one entity will be able to get a VHF frequency and
push their signal across the US, the wave length makes that
impossible. So the new users of the Empty VHF frequencies will be
much like TV stations I think. Licensed for an area.

True but most public TV stations are low powered stations.

I can get only a couple of stations via antenna where I live. One of
those is APT (Alabama Public Television) The other is a local Fox
affiliate but both of these have low powered antennas.

You might be surprised who is low powered versus who is not.

Even in the big city there are many low powered TV stations that tend
to be ethnic, cultural or similar type of stations.

stations that will not have to convert.

Apparently if you get the wrong box and receive one of these low
power or translator stations you might not get the stations with the box.

All of the above is true. The converter boxes will generally end
up blocking access to the transmitters that are not required to
convert to digital. Most large metro areas are only served by the
full power transmitters, with low power and translator facilities
serving outer, rural and mountainous areas.

Apparently if you get the wrong box and receive one of these low power

All of the above is true. The converter boxes will generally end up
blocking access to the transmitters that are not required to convert to
digital. Most large metro areas are only served by the full power
transmitters, with low power and translator facilities serving outer,

I think it is a good thing that we use a variety of methods. It makes it
a lot harder for the bad guys to rig the whole system with a single
exploit.

One of the things that bothered me about computerized voting was that
there was not enough variety. Even when the system was from a different
company, it still ran on the same highly insecure operating system.

Recall the rigged California gas pumps of a few years ago. Observing that
the state pump testers consistently bought certain quantities of gas the
pumps were programmed to not cheat customers who bought those specific

TAXES:
What Every Entrepreneur and Consultant Needs To Know
Speaker: Jina Etienne, CPA

Audience: Consultants, Small Business Owners, Entrepreneurs, Soon-To-Be
Small Business Owners, Freelancers, and Free Agents

Description: Is your business paying more in taxes than required by law?
Whether your business grosses millions of dollars each year or you are
just getting started as an independent consultant, you probably hire an
outside accountant to handle tax return submission. The ultimate
responsibility for paying appropriate taxes, however, is yours. Do you
have the basic accounting knowledge needed to supervise the work of your
accountant? Do you stay current on tax law changes?

Because tax return deadlines for corporations and individuals are
approaching, the focus of this presentation will be on income tax
compliance and preparation rather than on tax planning and consulting
issues. This presentation will alert you to mistakes and oversights that
can cost you money, and to tax law changes you need to know about. The
presentation will be followed by a question and answer session, so gather
your questions and join us.

Speaker: Jina Etienne, CPA, has more than 15 years of public accounting
experience. She began her career with Deloitte & Touche, one of the "Big
Eight" accounting firms, where her focus was tax planning and compliance
for corporations, partnerships, and S corporations ranging from government
contractors and vending companies to hospitality and retail firms. When
she left Deloitte & Touche to start Etienne & Associates, LLC, her focus
shifted to the needs of small- and medium-sized businesses.

With her own practice, Jina Etienne provides a wide range of accounting
services for businesses and individuals, including tax planning and
preparation, and business consulting. Her client base is diverse,
including retail and service-based businesses as well as consultants and
contractors. For individuals, her services generally include tax return
preparation and tax planning, including tax research and representation
before the IRS.

Ms. Etienne earned an M.S. in taxation in 1993 and a B.S.B.A. in
accounting in 1989 from American University. Jina has also taught
accounting as an adjunct professor at American University and teaches
QuickBooks at local accounting seminars and conferences.

Subject: Re: USB Audio Interface

FYI, I managed a work-a-round for the problem on not getting audio
through the computer speakers while recording a cassette through the
Behringer UCA202 USB interface. I had to run a separate pair of
speakers out of the headphone port on the UCA202 in order to get
external audio. Apparently the computer speaker muting is either
intentional to prevent feedback or a conflict between the interface
and/or the computer/Audacity program. I haven't found any
documentation yet to support this but it doesn't matter at this point.

Richard P.

Re: [CGUYS] USB Audio Interface

Behringer UCA202. It's a great unit but I just think that my
computer or the Audacity program is muting my speakers while the
interface is connected. The UCA202 does allow monitoring through
headphones so that will work. I will try your suggestions along
the way.

As I posted earlier, my USB audio interface also creates a few
strange things with at least one of my audio recording apps.
