Re: [CGUYS] Google: Damned if you do; damned if you don't

2010-02-04 Thread Allen Firstenberg
Normally I'd agree with you, Mike... but I think the article actually
rationalized it reasonably well.
It isn't to protect people from what they said...
...its to protect them (both the person and google) from what they DIDN'T
say.

It is admitting that:
1) Their software isn't perfect
2) That it may be used in situations where it can't really be reviewed
before it is used
and 3) That it may make errors in a way that are considered inappropriate.

In that sense, it is an interesting solution to the problem.

I would not think this situation to be directly related to political

more in religion and attendant social mores than in anything having to
do with politics.

I think the first definition is the best. Those who are too politically
correct might find it offensive.

There is a simple answer to this. The software should have a preference
setting.

One for, ask me: did you really mean to say the f word?
One for, I'm a foul mouth, don't ask.

Did you read Google's explanation, which I think is a good one?

They don't have enough confidence in the software. They want to avoid
the situation where somebody said something perfectly sweet and it got
translated to potty mouth. Just imagine what a field day the press
would have with that.
