[CGUYS] Recovering encrypted data?
A friend's flash drive was encrypted and they can't remember the user name which was setup. Is there a way to get back in to recover this data? That might work for the flash drive if it were not so bulky. It would help the person to have some secure way to keep track of all the usernames/passwords which are required to access the myriad of accounts that we all have to keep track of. Richard P. There are some programs that have lousy encryption. Check the manufacturer to see if this is one of them. It is not recommended to have only one or a few passwords, because if you are compromised in one place you will be compromised in all. Thus, if you do use biometric encryption, use some other as well: something you have plus something you know is better than just something you have. That said, there are a lot of passwords that don't mean a thing: your password to the NYTimes or Washington Post website: no money is involved from your point of view. This is, IMnotsoHO, an instance where there is no reason not to use the same password. On the other hand, use a distinct password for each Email account or for Amazon or other accounts where money is involved.
