I have had similar problems with Notron and BitDefender. I suspect
that all antiviral software has to make itself hard to remove. If they
didn't the next virus that came along could easily uninstall it. The
best defense is to not run defective OSs.

More and more I like the idea of periodically booting into Linux from
a CD and then running a virus scanner from there. BitDefender has such
a disk and it is free. It creates a RAM disk and downloads the latest
definitions. Then it runs against the inactive Windows drive. That
means it can bypass rootkits and other defenses that a virus could
have inserted into Windows.

I have already used this approach once when someone got infected
with this XP antivirus scam.

They are getting worse and will literally paralyze the system from
doing anything, even in safe mode, so the only option is to run the boot disk.

These have all been windows XP systems. Have not run into it yet with 7.

I was recently installing Trend Micro's AV for a customer when an error
occurred. When tried to uninstall to start over, there was no uninstall
routine available. So I re-ran the install and got more errors
(different from the prior time). I repeated the cycle and it continued
to get worse. When I went to their website and knowledge base, it was
difficult to find the instructions for a manual uninstall, and the
instructions I found did not work.. it still would not install
correctly. Finally, (for times sake) I convinced the customer to use
Avast Home instead.

I have encountered Trend in reviews and at some business sites; the
reviews were always good, the businesses did not have any issues with
the protection. I don't know why I had this problem, and don't care
enough to pursue it, nor to recommend it.

Re: [CGUYS] security softward - trendmicro - any information?

2010-05-04 Thread George Carr
I've been using Trend Micro PC-Cillin for quite a few years and it has done
the job. The only problem, kind of a big one, was that they majorly updated
the program a little over a year ago and uninstalling the old program
(necessary before installing the new one) was very complicated. Because I
was having trouble with the uninstallation and was busy with other stuff at
the time, I put off completing the job, and, of course, contracted a virus
necessitating (or so I thought) reinstallation of the entire OS. This will
not be a problem for you, unless Trend Micro does another similar upgrade in
the next couple of years. Soon we PC users will all be running Windows 7 and
hopefully these security issue will be but a bad memory.

There are dozens of anti-virus programs for the PC and the difference
between most of them is slight. The differences are also ever changing
as upgrades add or subtract features and annoyances.

I was recently looking at anti-virus options for a client. I looked at
both McAfee and Trend (among others) and saw very little difference
between them. Technically I like Bit Defender the best, but their USA
support operation is horrible. It is so bad that I won't use the
product. Some products have owners who poorly maintain their software
and then go in for major rewrites when sales drop too low. An example
of this is Norton, whose last update made the software good again.
Some people insist on only using free software, even though virus
definitions are not delivered as quickly. M$ offers a free product
that ain't bad.

So anybody who suggests dumping one anti-virus program for another
should be telling you exactly why. Their reasons may not impress you.
I would not bother swapping McAfee and Trend. There just isn't enough
difference to matter.

If you really cared about anti-virus you would not be using a virus-
prone OS. Get a Mac and stop fretting.
