[Consdistlist] Use of Profume for pest treatments

2017-11-02 Thread Gabrielle Flexer
Dear all,

We have recently been in discussion with a well known company regarding a
potential pest treatment on very large wooden beams, to be undertaken in-situ
at a museum store. As a possible alternative to anoxia by Carbon dioxide, a
fumigant Profume has been suggested, active ingredient Sulfuryl Fluoride -
99.8%. Has anyone had experience using this product as a fumigant with museum
objects? Any experiences or concerns people have had with the product would be
very helpful.

Many thanks,

Gabrielle Flexer

[Consdistlist] Call for Papers: SBMK Summit on International Collaboration, 15-16 November, The Netherlands

2017-11-02 Thread Scott Devine
Call for Papers
SBMK Summit on (inter)national collaboration
Acting in Contemporary Art Conservation
15-16 November 2018, The Netherlands

Background
The Dutch Foundation for the Conservation of Contemporary Art (SBMK) was formed
to manage the international project Modern Art: Who Cares (1995-1997). One of
the results of this project was the foundation of INCCA: the International
Network for the Conservation of Contemporary Art.

Since the start of INCCA in 1999, many conservation related research projects
have been carried out through international collaboration and the results
shared through the INCCA website. SBMK continued to initiate projects, such as
Inside Installations (2004 - 2007), Artist Interviews (1998 - 2004), and the
international symposium Contemporary Art: Who Cares? (2010).
SBMK has taken the initiative to organise a new international symposium re
ecting this background and to inspire future collaborations: Acting in
Contemporary Art Conservation on 15-16 November 2018 in the Netherlands. The
aim is to create a lively event where you can meet your peers, share current
research and initiate new projects.

Museum Practices
One of the general outcomes of the research projects so far, has been a
thorough understanding of the in uence that conservation treatments and museum
practices have on the future existence of contemporary artworks. Museum
professionals and the audience are often actively engaged in contemporary art,
sometimes becoming participants in the creative process, which poses
challenging questions to the preservation of such artworks. These developments
create new challenges for museum professionals and ask for specialist
expertise, as they are in fact all acting in contemporary art conservation.

Topics
Several timely topics have been selected for this symposium and you are invited
to present a proposal that either ts these topics or to suggest an additional
theme, as the programme is open to include one more. The themes selected are:
decision making, artist participation and oral history in conservation. As we
are aiming to create a dynamic event, the format of the presentations need not
be a plenary talk. Ideas for workshops and panel discussions are also welcome.

Deadline
Please send your ideas for a contribution in a 250 word abstract accompanied by
a 100 word biography before 31 December 2017 to: sum...@sbmk.nl
.
If you have a suggestion for an additional theme; please let us know before
15 November 2017, so we can make an additional call for papers.

Please note
The Dutch project on the identi cation of plastics outside the lab will be the
topic of the English spoken SBMK Day taking place just prior to the event, 14
November 2018. You are more than welcome as a participant on this day too, to
make it a three-day contemporary art conservation event.

[Consdistlist] Call for Papers: 2nd Icon Book & Paper Group Conference, 1-3 October 2018, Oxford, UK

2017-11-02 Thread Icon BPG
Call for Papers

Unexpected fame: Conservation approaches to the preparatory object

2ND Icon Book & Paper Group Conference

Oxford, 1–3 October 2018

The Icon Book & Paper Group is pleased to announce the theme for our 2018
conference, and to open the call for papers. Please see below for further
details of how you can submit an abstract for consideration by our review
panel. A call for posters will follow in early 2018.

Objects such as artists’ sketchbooks or authors’ manuscripts were not
necessarily created with posterity in mind. Their creators may not have
anticipated a lifespan encompassing display, digitisation or heavy
consultation. Indeed in some instances the producers of these objects may
not have expected this part of their oeuvre to survive beyond its first
use. Do we therefore treat them differently to ‘finished’ works, which were
always expected to have a wider audience and longer lifespan? How – and how
far - do we preserve the evidence of working techniques and practices left
by the author, artist, printer, publisher, or architect? Does their
original function affect how we conserve, display and interpret these
objects? If a maker has deliberately tried to obscure previous versions of
a work, where does the remit of the conservator or researcher end when it
comes to uncovering erasures or amendments? Do we alter the legacy of such
objects with our interventions?

Abstracts are invited for 30 minute presentations on all aspects of
conservation relevant to these issues, including scientific studies and PhD
research.

Examples of possible topics include:

Papers exploring the reconciliation of conservation needs with the desire
to preserve evidence of the artist or author’s working practices (eg.
intentionally torn pages; use of unsuitable materials such as sellotape)

Conservation treatment or research that has uncovered deliberately obscured
information, such as redacted text or evidence of working methods

Innovative conservation treatments or display methods that take into
account the particular nature of objects considered part of an artist,
author or architect's preparatory body of work

Conservation of preparatory works on/in paper or board such as artists’
sketchbooks, sculpture maquettes, stage sets and models

Abstracts should be in English and 300–500 words in length. Please download
and use the designated template available on the conference website
https://icon.org.uk/groups/book-paper/icon-book-paper-group-conference-2018,
or request a copy by emailing icon...@gmail.com. Participation from
students, new Icon members and professionals in allied fields is encouraged.

The deadline for abstracts is 31 January 2018. A selection committee will
review abstracts and notify speakers no later than March 2018.
