[Consdistlist] Historic Indoor Fountains--Functioning

2018-06-07 Thread Berrie, Barbara via consdistlist
We would like to share experiences designing recirculating water systems for
working historic fountains made from metals such as brass or lead. We are
redesigning the recirculating systems on our indoor fountains to deal with
issues that arose when the city water supply changed. If your institution has
installed working historic fountains, we would appreciate hearing from you
about your solutions to design of the pumping system and the chemistry of the
water. Thanks in advance! Barbara Berrie,

[Consdistlist] Conservation of oversized sketches (gouache on paper) with Japanese techniques

2018-06-07 Thread info
Dear colleagues,

Find in the blog the last post about the conservation treatment of several
oversized paintings on Kraft paper. The conservation treatment used wooden
boards instead of the karibari panel in order to follow the japanese
techniques.
The sketches belong to the Hispanic Society of America since this
institution ordered them to the spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla.

Enjoy it!

PAINTINGS GROUP CONFERENCE 2018: CALL FOR POSTER PRESENTATIONS

"Wet Paint: interactions between water and paintings"

A one-day conference is to be held at the National Museum of Scotland,
Edinburgh, on Friday 12th October 2018.

There are many ways in which water and humidity can physically alter
paintings, sometimes with disastrous effect; such as staining canvases,
flaking and blanching paint, warping of wooden panels and cockling canvas
supports. However, water is also a useful material for conservators that can
be employed in the treatment of painted surfaces, such as: in the form of
aqueous cleaning solutions, for moisture treatments to reduce deformations,
and as a carrier for adhesives.

This conference will look at the ways in which water and paintings can
interact, and their implications for the conservator. We welcome papers that
address new research or report case studies of treatments. Papers could
address topics such as:

- water damage and its treatment

- relative humidity and its effect on paintings

- water sensitivity of paint

- aqueous cleaning systems

- water soluble restoration materials

The conference program for Oral Presentations is available at
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wet-paintinteractions-
between-water-and-paintings-tickets-44057892342.

The call for POSTER PRESENTATIONS is now open.

If you would like to be considered, please forward a short proposal using
the poster proposal template (https://technology-trust-
news.org/t/6S6-5O2LK-L8ZMP1-35BUJO-1/c.aspx) to the

[Consdistlist] Icon Internship, Preventive Conservation

2018-06-07 Thread Patrick Whife
Icon Internship, Preventive Conservation
National Trust for Scotland supported by the Bute Memorial Fund
12 month internship starting October 2018
Location: Newhailes House, Musselburgh, EH21 6RY
Supervisor: Julie Bon ACR Conservator East
Educational Stipend: £17,000, plus dedicated study visit fund

This internship is hosted by the National Trust for Scotland, supported by the
Trust's Bute Memorial Fund and managed in partnership with Icon.

The Bute/Icon internship is an exceptional opportunity for an emerging
professional. The Trust is Scotland's leading conservation charity, with an
extensive portfolio of built heritage sites, from castles and country houses to
cottages, working historic environments and modern museum facilities.
Material culture collections are on open display at more than 50 of these
properties, and their care is the responsibility of the Trust's Curatorial &
Conservation Service. Our emphasis is on a collaborative approach rooted in
strategy, preventive conservation principles and practice.

The intern will be supervised by the Trust's Conservator East and will be based
at the East Regional Office at Newhailes House. The focus of the internship
will be assisting with a number of projects due to happen at Newhailes over the
next year, including a large-scale moth eradication project and the development
of a plan for the conservation, display and interpretation of the house and its
collections.

Alongside this the intern will have the opportunity to be involved with the
delivery of preventive conservation activities (environmental monitoring and
control, light management, IPM and housekeeping) to further embed and raise
standards at this and other Trust properties. An important and stimulating part
of the internship will be to help deliver conservation training events for
Trust staff and volunteers.

The intern will also get to experience and contribute to conservation projects
and activities throughout the Trust according to a mutually agreed work plan.
Overnight stays in various parts of Scotland should be anticipated, and will be
funded separately by the Trust.

The successful applicant will have a recognised conservation qualification and
will actively be seeking a career in preventive conservation. S/he will
relish working in Scotland, and be a highly-motivated, reliable and resourceful
individual with outstanding interpersonal skills. Strong IT and
organisational skills are essential, as well as an ability to work at heights.
A full UK / EU driving licence and a willingness to drive are essential.
Please apply using the application form on the Icon website only.

[Consdistlist] Call for Papers: Association of Art Museum Curators

2018-06-07 Thread Yadin Larochette
I saw this Call and had to forward, as I see this as an excellent
opportunity for conservators to team up with their curatorial colleagues.
(Disclaimer: Tru Vue, Inc. is not affiliated with this organization in any
way, and neither am I):

The Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC) is seeking session proposals
focusing on internal and external engagement within art organizations for
its 2019 Conference, slated for May 4-7, 2019 in New York City
. This
is an internationally relevant topic shaping the future of our arts
organizations and encompasses dialogues about *access, inclusion and
empathy*.

We request proposals considering the full spectrum of engagement, not
limited to visitor audience development only but also taking into
consideration the curatorial voice in shaping the culture of
organizations. Panels should propose discussions acknowledging community,
which involves our workplace colleagues and partners; supporters and
sponsors; visitors; non-museum sectors of the arts; and more. We seek to
present throughout the Conference conversations on the possibilities and
responsibilities of the curatorial role within inclusive and accessible
engagement practices.

*All proposals must be submitted through our online submission portal

no
later than 5pm ET on Monday, July 16, 2018.* No exceptions will be granted.

*Submission Guidelines*

· Proposals should support a discussion model of presentation utilizing
case studies and open dialogue rather than presenting formal papers.

· Proposals should address topics pertinent to the range of fields,
organizations, career stages, and overall breath of the curatorial
profession and arts community.

· As with all AAMC & AAMC Foundation programming and overall efforts,
proposals should strive to be representative of diversity across
self-identifications (by nation, gender, creed, race), fields of expertise,
types of institutional mission, and regional position, and of
participants.
