We are seeking to appoint a Collections Manager to manage the conservation, 
development and promotion of our collection.  The collection at West Dean was 
accumulated by our Founder Edward James and contains internationally renowned 
art works, an extensive range of artefacts and furniture collected by the James 
family. This role will oversee all aspects of curatorial and research 
activities associated with the collection and will be central in broadening its 
engagement both inside and outside of the College in particular as an 
educational and research resource.

The ideal candidate will have had extensive experience working with and 
managing historic collections within a museum, arts, education or similar 
institution.  As well as an established professional in their field, we are 
looking for someone with practical knowledge of collections management, 
including knowledge and experience of working with recognised standards and an 
excellent understanding of conservation and preservation issues. In addition 
proven experience of developing and implementing collection plans, working with 
collection management systems are also essential, as well as demonstrable 
experience of managing staff, resources and projects.

delivery of treatments.  Supervisory experience is also required.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic conservation 
professional to be the Subject Leader specialising in Metals.  Working within 
the School of Conservation, the post holder will be responsible for the 
organisation and delivery of subject specialist curriculum for conservation of 
Metals at Graduate Diploma and Masters level, as well as having responsibility 
for the co-ordination and management of some aspects of cross-school curriculum 
as agreed with the Head of School.

The Metals department comprises one of five conservation disciplines offered at 
West Dean, with courses ranging from Foundation Diploma to MA; validated by the 
University of Sussex.  Subject specific study within the broad contextual 
experience of a multi-disciplinary conservation college, a low staff to student 
ratio, extensive workshop time and international profile, contribute to a 
unique experience. With the course established for nearly three decades West 
Dean Alumni are leading practitioners both in the UK and beyond. 

The ideal candidate for this position will have demonstrable experience in the 
professional practice of metals conservation and a broad understanding of 
inorganic materials; with experience of teaching, assessment and administration 
in higher education, as well as a track record of successful programme 
management.  Crucial to the role is also a solid understanding of contemporary 
conservation theory and practice, and a professional approach to best workshop 
and studio practice.

work within the School of Conservation.  This new role will be responsible for 
the integration of scientific practice and methodology and delivery of subject 
specialist curricula for units of study at FHEQ levels 6 and 7, as well as 
supervising the dedicated equipment and teaching space.

To be successful in this role, demonstrable experience in the professional 
practice of conservation with a science specialism, as well as significant 
experience of teaching, assessment and administration in higher education is 
essential.  A solid understand of contemporary conservation theory and practice 
in addition to experience of quality assurance and enhancement in higher

purpose-built ruinette which provides examples of historic masonry and 
brickwork. Courses are delivered by a range of experienced course tutors all of 
whom are established professionals in their field. These courses comprise one 
of a broad portfolio of disciplines supported by the School of Conservation.

practice of building conservation, with significant experience of teaching,
