[Consdistlist] CCAHA's Upcoming Conference, Dec 5-6 in Philadelphia, PA

2019-09-16 Thread pso
CCAHA is proud to announce our 2019 conference, STRIKING THE BALANCE: ACCESS
VS/ PRESERVATION IN MUSEUMS

December 5 - December 6

Museum of the American Revolution
101 South Third Street
Philadelphia, PA 19106
amrevmuseum.org

Innovative educational strategies have revolutionized how art and artifacts are
presented to diverse audiences, as a variety of communication styles and
learning preferences are considered. Programs that incorporate touch
experience, adaptive exhibition environments, and interactive digital
encounters relay the story for all. Even the work of conservators and museum
professionals may be presented as part of the storytelling, as creative
approaches to accessibility and collections care evolve. Yet, these approaches
may seem at odds with preservation. The need for accessibility in museums
requires a delicate balance between preservation and making materials available
and understandable to a large audience with diverse needs. Strategies for
promoting access with responsible stewardship is the focus of this conference.

This two-day conference includes the opportunity to explore interactive
exhibits and a new special exhibition, Cost of Revolution: The Life and Death
of an Irish Soldier, at the Museum of the American Revolution.

Topics include:
- Touch programs with preservation handling
- ADA considerations in house museums
- Conservation on exhibit
- Digitization for accessibility
- Sensory sensitivity and visitor experience
- Giving access to university museum students

[Consdistlist] EXPOSED: The Exhibition of Paper-based Materials, Philadelphia, PA

2019-03-06 Thread pso
Join the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts
(http://www.ccaha.org) and the Barnes Foundation (http://barnesfoundation.org)
as they present “EXPOSED: The Exhibition of Paper-based Materials”.

About the Symposium
Light is the essential problem for museum and conservation professionals
responsible for works on paper: to view and appreciate these artifacts, you
must have light; however, all visible, UV, and infrared exposure has
cumulatively negative effects. The display of works on paper is a balancing
act—museums are aware of the causes of deterioration but need to make artifacts
accessible.

What questions should be asked when a work on paper is requested for
exhibition? This symposium will address strategies to manage the exhibition of
works on paper while balancing preservation. A variety of approaches will be
presented at the symposium, including the use of lighting design,
microfadeometry as a risk assessment strategy, and facsimiles. Case studies
will offer approaches to challenging exhibition lighting, with the Barnes
itself as one case study.

Registrants are invited to visit the Conservation Center for Art & Historic
Artifacts (CCAHA) on Thursday, April 4, from 5:00 - 6:00 pm. CCAHA conservators
will offer demonstrations on a variety of facsimile options and discuss
conservation treatment to works on paper.

This symposium is intended for conservators, curators, and staff responsible
for the care and exhibition of works on paper in museum collections.

[Consdistlist] Register now! Preserving Modern and Contemporary Museum Collections Conference

2018-07-12 Thread pso
The Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts (CCAHA)
(http://www.ccaha.org) is pleased to present Now On View: Preserving Modern and
Contemporary Museum Collections on September 12-13, 2018 at The Broad in Los
Angeles, California.

Caring for modern and contemporary collections is a continually evolving
challenge. The 20th and 21st centuries presented a vast array of new materials
that have left collections staff in uncharted territory as they address
unprecedented preservation problems. Colors change and fade, structures lose
their integrity, and material components become obsolete. Museums and other
collecting institutions must understand the long-term needs of these items in
order to determine appropriate priorities for conservation, storage,
exhibition, documentation, and digitization. This two-day conference will
explore ways to anticipate, plan for, and address preservation concerns in
modern and contemporary collections.

Topics include:

--Exhibiting modern materials
--Preservation of time-based media
--Preservation within the balance of the law
--Artist/conservator relationship
--Considering what to save

This program is intended for collections care staff responsible for modern and
contemporary materials in museums.

To register or view a pdf of the brochure, please visit https://bit.ly/2L27x0Y.
VoCA Partnership

On day two of the conference, a dynamic session presented in partnership with
VoCA (Voices in Contemporary Art)
(http://www.voca.network) will focus on building relationships with artists.
How might the artist's voice become a key resource for the museum professionals
who preserve their work? A keynote presentation by Chad Alligood, Independent
Curator and Vice President of VoCA's Board of Directors, will address the
importance of engaging the artist in the stewardship of their work. Next, a
case study discussion will explore an existing artist/conservator relationship:
a conversation between Rachel Rivenc, Project Specialist in the Collections
Department at the Getty Conservation Institute, and artist Larry Bell. A
presentation by Lauryn Guttenplan, Associate General Counsel at the Smithsonian
Institution, will shed light on the legal and ethical aspects of working with
and interviewing artists.

These offerings will demonstrate how building strong, lasting relationships
with artists—preserving their words alongside their work—is a vital aspect of
contemporary collections care.
