A crude form of lock-in indeed. I'm glad that it's only a minor
annoyance to someone who just wants to use the slot as a standard PCI-e
x4 slot.

Anyway, I've just ordered the riser and this low profile M.2 to PCI-e
adapter:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Desktop-Dual-Port-NGFF-M-2-B-M-Key-SSD-to-PCI-Express-4X-PCI-E-Adapter-Card/112479629708

Now I'm hoping that Petitboot will let me boot from it. :-)

It works, yes. ASUS just flipped the slot around for the PIKE slot as a
crude form of lock-in to the PIKE cards. Electrically and firmware-wise
it's just a standard 4x slot.

[coreboot] ASUS KGPE-D16 PIKE slot usable as a PCI-e x4 slot

2017-07-21 Thread Christian E . Jørgensen

Has anyone here tried this:

https://hardforum.com/threads/asus-pike-is-usable-as-pcie-x4.1781277/

?

Unfortunately, the pictures are gone, but I assume something like this

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PCI-E-4X-to-4X-Riser-Card-Extender-Express-Extension-Cable-Flexible-Ribbon-cable-/112362728545

and a low profile card are required.

In any case, an extra PCI-e x4 slot may come in handy. :-)

Yeah having it in a "destination" city would be nice so we broke people
can combine it with a tourist trip.

Plus you can easily take the train there from all the major the east
coast cities and chicago so you don't have to be hassled by airport
"security". (you could bring a server with you on amtrak and they
wouldn't mind)
