Hello Annie-You make a good point, of the reporter calling James a immigrant
instead of soldier. I have come to the conclusion , that James retired from
military in about 1843, because he bought number 11 Poy
nzty street, or road, and got married in 1844 to Christine Scholastique
Thibault, and in 1861 census he is on lot 112, district Tiny, Simcoe county. So
from the time he retired from Military to the time the article was written in
1939, leaves a time frame of almost a 100 years. A C Osbornes list of Drummond
islanders who moved to Pentanguishene in 1828, after the American's took over,
list Scholastique as being married to James Quigley, a Pensioner, and Medalist.
Donald Patrick Quigley-Winnipeg Canada-Thank you for information you sent.

What a great find! You should post that on the Co. Tyrone board/list, and
include the name and date of the newspaper.

I see that this article was indexed on the Huronia Museum site:

https://huroniamuseum.com/2019/09/page/2/

-- which says it's from the Midland Free Press of September 6th, 1939.

It doesn't sound as if James Quigley (the emigrant) was in the military, if his
son James Jr. was described as "the son of Irish immigrants who settled in this
district."

If James had been in the military or was associated with a local garrison, like
Henry Arthur Columbus' gunsmith grandfather, Louis Columbus, you'd think the
reporter would have mentioned that fact.

I'd suggest writing to the museum and telling them that you're a descendant of
the FIRST James Quigley, and see if they can tell you anything from their
archives. One of their curators or volunteers might know a lot about the early
militia in that area.

Their web site says:

Huronia Museum is closed to the public for the time being. All events and
public programming are cancelled until further notice. This includes all-day
camp, public programming, the film series and artifact donations. We can still
be reached on Facebook, per email at
huroniamus...@gmail.com or by phone at 705 526
2844.

Regards,
Annie

[CoTyroneMailingList] James Quigley-married to SusanColumbus

2020-06-02 Thread Don 1 via CoTyroneList
This James is the son of James 1795, and Mary Devine, second wife of James
1795. The article was published in Pentanguishene newspaper in Sept3-6th 1939.
Thank you to the people who gave research advice. I have lots of work to do to
find James Military regiment. There is at least 6 descendants, of James 1795
who have been trying to find his regiment. He is listed as a pensioner and
medalist, in A C Osborne History of Drummond Island people moved to
Pentanguishene in 1828, including the 68th Durham Light infantry, when the
Americans took posseion of the island.

Hi Donald Thought yo might like to read this

  * PENETANG — Henry Arthur Columbus, Penetanguishene, believed to be a
direct descendant of Christopher Columbus, discoverer of America, was buried in
Penetang this morning, following a double funeral service for him and his
brother-in-law, James Quigley, both men died on Monday in the Quigley family
residence, here. Columbus was the grandson of Louis Columbus who came to
Penetanguishene as a gunsmith for the local garrison during the war of 1812-14.
Louis Columbus, in turn, was the son of a well known early Toronto gunsmith,
Isaac Columbus, who conducted a shop on Caroline St., in Toronto. Isaac
Columbus Lived to be one hundred and four years old. Isaac came to Toronto from
Montreal where he was born. Isaac’s parents, according to family history came
from France. Isaac’s father was supposed to be one of two sons of Christopher
Columbus who went to France from Genoa, the birthplace of Christopher Columbus.
The other son of Christopher Columbus reportedly went to Morocco and the local
branch of the family has no trace of his descendants. Henry Columbus, who died
early Sunday morning is survived by four sons, Frank, Christopher, Cletus and
Leo, and one daughter Ethel. Mrs. Columbus and a daughter Edna are predeceased.
During his lifetime, the recently deceased Mr. Columbus was a lumber camp
foreman for the McGibbon Lumber Co., Penetang. James Quigley, who died a few
hours after Mr. Columbus in the same house, had been ill for seventeen months.
He was in his 83rd year. A lifelong resident of Penetanguishene, Mr. Quigley
was the son of Irish immigrants who settled in this district. He is survived by
his wife, the former Susan Columbus, whom he married in 1888, and three sons,
James and Arthur in Calgary and Howard in the United States. The funeral
cortege of Mr. Quigley met that of Henry Columbus which started from his
brother’s home at the outskirts of Penetanguishene, and the combined cortege
proceeded to Ste. Anne’s Jesuit Memorial Church, where Requiem High Mass was
sung by Rev. Father Walsh, interment of both men was in Ste. Ann’s cemetery.

I did the spite test for Ancestry, and it came back, that I had a lot of Irish
Ancestry in me, which I knew already. It also said I had 2% Norway heritage - I
thought they made a mistake. Then I realized, when I was in Ireland, 3 years
ago, the Vikings invaded Ireland. Donald Patrick Quigley- Winnipeg

Subject: James Quigley, born about 1795, catholic in Londonderry, Tyrone,
Ireland.

Hello I am looking for the Military regiment of my great -great Grandfather.
James Quigley. I believe he came to Canada with the a British regiment
between1808 to 1843,. There was 8 regiments who were station in Pentanguishene
Ontario. I can't find his parents name, on his marriage application of 1844. He
must have taken his retirement, because he purchased land in Pentanguishene in
1843. He might have been a Sargent, who received a medal, and a pension. There
was a James, with the 66th who was born in 1808 who deserted in 1833. -also a
James with Glengarry Fencibles born in 1785, and a Prostant. My James became
successful with a big farm, brickyard, and lumbermill. He got married a second
time to Mary Devine in 1854. He may have a brother named Charles, who got
married in Londonderry in 1829, and came to Pentanguishene in 1831-1835. I was
also wondering if he followed the Irish tradition of naming first born after
parents name. He called his first son James, and his first daughter
Mary. James is listed in the 1861 census of Simcoe counties, also in 1871
census, and in 1881 census. He died in August 1886 in Pentanguishene, and was
buried by St Ann's catholic church. Thank you- Donald Patrick Quigley-Winnipeg

"In the 1980s, the late David Todd, who lived all his life in Greerstown,
Co. Londonderry researched his family history and produced a booklet for
family members. When doing this he realised that a useful source of
information was gravestones, and the condition of many of these was fast
deteriorating, which would lead to the loss of useful information. In the
late 1980s / early 1990s, he produced four booklets transcribing the
inscriptions in graveyards in Co. Londonderry and Co. Tyrone as follows:
Old Glendermott, with his daughter, Marjorie; Leckpatrick, with his wife,
Sheelagh; Old Donagheady, with his daughter, Deirdre and the Grange Burial
Ground, with his wife, Sheelagh. These were very successful.

The family is therefore delighted to share them with interested parties
