RE: [Coworking] Re: About the Unconference: Who's for virtual attendance?
I think Skype's multipoint has limits on how many can view it. I would suggest something like ustream.tv, which is designed for doing streaming of things like this. I also think they can store the stream for asynchronous viewing. [Coworking] Re: About the Unconference: Who's for virtual attendance?
New member here. I'm opening a space soon with friends in Los Angeles. I'll be at another conference on the 7th but I'll try to tune in remotely. In any case I'd love to hear how the Coworking unconference goes. Will there be any recordings made? ~ Christefano On Feb 24, 9:45 am, Jesse Jones je...@theworkingplace.org wrote: I would love to participate virtually. I like the Skype idea, but I also have a Microsoft Live Meeting account that we may be able to use. Wish I could be there in person, but this would be an excellent alternative. Jesse On Feb 24, 12:07 am, JeanYves jeanyveshuw...@gmail.com wrote: @Tony I'm in for a morning warmup session. That's why, to me, a debrief of the unconference (main arising points) with a kind of a QA would be a good fit. What do you think ? Though, we have to take the timezones into account (between Beijing and Amsterdam, the slot will be narrow) :-) Best Jean-Yves On Feb 24, 5:14 am, Tony Bacigalupo tonybacigal...@gmail.com wrote: If someone who's attending the coference has the hardware and the willpower to tackle trying to stream some of the talks, let Anna or me know. I'm up for a morning of event. Start at Kerby Lane or Magnolia and move on from there? Maybe head to Link or Cospace or Conjunctured after that? And you're ALWAYS welcome in San Antonio! I'll be driving up and will have transport for up to 4 people. Cheers! [Coworking] CoWorking Association?
Was reading some threads on insurance, etc. Has anyone actively pursued trying to start an association for coworkers such that we have a collective voice and could potentially ascertain if a group insurance pool could be made available to coworkers across the US? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Coworking group. [Coworking] Collecting Coworker Stories
Beth and I are working on the next ebook. The goal of this one is to educate, inspire and mobilize potential coworkers. We're doing that with a mix of coworker stories and tools/resources about what coworking is, how to search for a community and how to prepare to actually cowork. We originally planned for just Cohere stories HOWEVER, we'd like to give any coworker, anywhere, the option to share their story. All stories will be published in the ebook and each contributor will receive their compiled story (with their info and narrative) via email. I think there could be some value in each community manager using their members' stories for outreach and education. You could also take it to the next level and compile all your members' stories like we are and bind them in a physical or electronic book... On Alex's advice, we added a few more questions to prevent blank page syndrome. We'd love your help in circulating this link around. https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=enformkey=dFpuc3VWTkZqQjZzbmMtdVMxOTJXcUE6MQ#gid=0 -Angel -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Coworking group. [Coworking] Re: matchmaking among coworkers
You may think about it from another perspective... Is there something more appropriate than a coworking space when you are an entrepreneur/start up/freelance in a city/country where you have no professional relationship ? Personally, I don't see. Unless you are a middle-sized or big company, local chambers of commerce, for instance, are unlikely to provide you with much help. Everything is a matter of timing and context. One may show no interest at all in a coworkers online network or a peers contact base... untill a need or an opportunity surfaces. Then, it turns out to be very useful... Jean-Yves On Feb 25, 2:19 am, Liu Yan liuyan.dat...@gmail.com wrote: We do matchmaking/connection for our coworkers with the people we know and trust, but yet, we declared we are not responsible for any bad causes or failures if the collaboration doesn't work out. I believe the across-border and across culture collaboration is even harder if the hosts of the spaces don't have a deep trustworthy relationship with one another. Based in China, I am often approached by the coworking spaces in Europe or in the North America for international collaboration, but up to now, I am not yet convinced this will bring any direct benefits to my community. The Chinese context is often mis-interpreted and mis-perceived in the west, and it takes just too much effort for us to achieve a basic understanding and trust to each other before we could start to talk about collaboration. 2011/2/25 Alex Hillman dangerouslyawes...@gmail.com I've had this conversation offline with some guys working with us to build some internal tools that we intend to use, somewhat to this end. Some important excerpts. Some context is lost since I'm not copying the other person's conversation, but I've done my best to include the important parts. I'd challenge the need for filters and suggest that productive collaborations are going to come from personality fits, not disciplinary fits. If you meet someone you jive with and they don't necessarily have the skill you need, there's an increased chance that they know someone who a) they jive with and b) they trust and c) has the skill you need. They might even challenge your perspective of what skill you need. Bottom line is, by focusing on non-superficial collaborations, you may produce a lower number of collaborations, but a larger number of lasting and productive collaborations. That's what we've seen dozens of times over here, and why we focus on the things we focus on. Provide just enough context for shared interest and tastes, and the way things unfold from there is far more energizing than helping along the superficial elements of collaboration. *The need to sort* ** Your idea for color-based pattern recognition [for identifying skillsets] is good, but it's inherently *exclusive* instead of *inclusive*. If I need a developer and the only people I'm looking at are the orange ones, I'm instant excluding the ones who aren't orange, and the fact is that one of those non-orange people may lead me to the person I'm looking for based on who they've worked with in the past. I think this needs to be rethought lest it simply be a skill directory rather than mirror the uniquely valuable behaviors of a coworking space. More practical sorts would be things like I am available for work or How Often I am at Indy Hall. Less wordy versions of those, perhaps, but you get the idea. Also, ...its the unique order of operations where relationships come first that has produced the types of collaborations at Indy Hall. I'm not willing to circumvent our own process and put skills first when we firmly believe that putting personality first (well, relationships first, but that comes from matches in personality) is what makes us special. The bottom line is, creating yet another professional network is, in my mind, akin to opening yet another office. Not only is it boring, but it's not creating long term value. I want to change the world through changing how people think about working together. My vision for the future of work isn't working from coworking spaces, but instead, that the massively successful business owners and leaders had once worked from a coworking space at some point in their career and that molded their approach to business relationships. I think these are the little nuances that make a huge difference in 10-20 years. -Alex /ah indyhall.org coworking in philadelphia On Thu, Feb 24, 2011 at 12:07 PM, Jerome Chang jer...@blankspaces.comwrote: Could it be as easy as using LinkedIn Groups to foster discussion/collaboration, and people would typically only post their professional profiles and therefore list skills, what they're seeking, etc.? Re: [Coworking] CoWorking Association?
Mark I believe a number of us have had these discussions. I spoke to our representative from Trinet (a PEO). He reiterated what others had shared which is that in order to qualify for a shared insurance plan, the individuals covered would need to all be employees of the same organization. This doesn't mean that there is no option...
