RE: [Coworking] Re: looking for software to administer and book desk in a coworking location

2011-09-07 Thread Liz Elam
I was using multiple Google calendars to manage my meeting spaces and
conference room and managing it all myself. I simply outgrew the system and
have recently upgraded to Liquidspace. I worked with Liquidspace at SXSW
last year and was impressed by their app and their team. They have lots of
new improvements coming and are super supportive.

This is a great summary Alex. There is also some gym software folks were
talking about but I'm spacing on the name just now. A quick search through
the mailing list archives would turn it up. I know OfficeXpats, a new space
on Bainbridge Island is running it and I asked for a demo when they get it
all up and running.

Hmmm, that sounds annoying. I would contact the companies and ask them
to buy membership to continue to use the physical address. Despite
what the attorney says, I wouldn't want any company using my business
as their front. It seems shady plus it creates an awkward situation
for you every time someone comes in looking for them.

Here's my question for you. Have any of you had companies register your
address as their own without actually being a member? In the four years that
we've been around, this has happened twice. First it was a limousine
company. Then it was an alarm company.

We first discovered it when someone dropped into our office to look for
one of the companies. A few web searches later and we discovered our address
all over the interwebs and in business license filings that were not related
to us.  At first we got rather worked up about it. Our attorney, however,
told us to not worry about it as there was no actual harm being done to our
business. So, just the other day a few more people dropped in to see someone
about an alarm system. Again, our attorney (who has a desk here) tells us
that this is a problem for state/city government types that handle licensing
and not us.

I'm curious. Have any of you run into this before? If so, what did you
do?

  Any input would be appreciated.

  Thank you,

RE: [Coworking] Re: What percentage of your membership is made up by women?

I would love to see some real numbers around women and coworking. I'm

Back when the global coworking survey was done, women comprised about
1/3rd of the US respondents. Based on our other work, this was
probably a bit higher than the actual female rate, which at the time
we estimated at about 25%. This data is about 1 year old.

In our interviews with women we often hear that the habits of male
coworkers don't always lead to environments that are attractive to
women. In particular, the personal grooming and behavioral habits of
young male techies are often highlighted (note to young male techies -
take more showers:)).

Despite this, It seems from our point of view that women's coworking
share is increasing. Lots of studies show women are more naturally
collaborative than men (sorry guys). This could indicate in the long
run women coworkers will out number men.

Having said that, self-employment skews male. So does employment in
the tech industry. Given that many coworkers are in the tech industry
and self-employed, having more male than female coworkers - at least
today - is not a surprise.

Turnstone is the brand within the Steelcase company that has worked with 3
coworking spaces, including

1 by their HQ in Grand Rapids, MI;

2 in Austin (http://www.linkcoworking.com/, and another that I
don't know of);

SF (Sandbox Suites' newest [3rd] location in Union Sq:
http://www.sandboxsuites.com/spacessf2.html).

Basically, they're providing strong discounts off their more [most?]
affordable brand, and providing design services [if you're not working with
an architect/designer] to help visualize the space, to pick colors/finishes,
etc. We're talking to them as well, but since I design my own spaces, their
design services aren't as valuable to us.

RE: [Coworking] Link Coworking - Austin's latest Coworking Space

2010-09-23 Thread Liz Elam
, and how not all members are listed - the text makes it
appear that it is a full list of all members, which (a) might make folks say
only four members? including you? and co-promotional partners? or (b)
might make someone reluctant to join if they thought that they would have to
be publicly listed. And on opening day, calling them member success
stories doesn't ring true - clearly the successes at this point are from
their pre-Coworking days. Ditto (excellent point and will be reworked).

In general (and you're not at all alone in this), watch out for the
transition issues around a website that is designed before you open to
reflect a business-in-operation, but which doesn't fully support your launch
period. I often recommend that people plan not one website fully deployed at
startup, but a phased approach that gradually evolves. Remember, the website
isn't just a box to check on your launch plan, but the primary point of
exposure/contact for not just your members but your whole extended community
that will be essential to your long-term success. We did do a static page
to begin with and then develop the interactive site. The site is far from
complete and the member section will be very robust but behind the curtain.
I have been getting on average 3 leads a day from the web.

I'm curious about your membership model; it seems like a one-time $200 fee
creates a potentially significant barrier to entry compared to some other
spaces, including ones in Austin; do you have any drop-in rates, day-rates,
trial periods, or other ways for people to try before they buy? I see any
scheduled tour includes a day free, but it seems like that wouldn't offer a
full experience; Is the concept that members make a major commitment? Is any
portion refundable? (the discounted rates for a year's contract put me in
mind of cell-phone service; will we eventually see Coworking spaces offer to
pay early cancellation fees for other spaces?) To launch Link, I went with
a very simple plan. I have looked at hundreds of Coworking websites and I
found many of the models to be way too complicated. I do feel people need
to make a commitment to the space so the $200 is non-refundable. I'm also
not going after the typical client. I worked from home for 9 years and I
wanted a space just like Link. I believe there is a market in Austin that
wants a slightly higher-end space and they'll be willing to pay a little
more. All that being said, If I get feedback that I'm wrong, I'll revisit
my model. A day trial is free and I wanted the tour because I'm a sales
person and I want to talk to every potential client.

I'm also a little surprised that half-day rentals for rooms seems to be the
minimum; in my Coworking experience, I use an hour here or there most of the
time, and that lets your shared spaces get more users per time period.
Again, simplicity was the driver. However, if the community wants it
changed, I am open to change.

In Events, it's hard for someone to be on time as a courtesy to our
speaker when the lunch events don't list a start time Oversight on my
part, will fix asap! And it looks like there's a typo in the firm name for
your 10/13 speaker Thank you for catching that. And if you can include links
from the speaker names, that would make it easier for people to learn more
about why they should come. Good point.

Remember to update your Twitter bio - memberships available starting in
July is clearly no longer your main message (Changed), and at this point a
photo as background or even as user icon might be more captivating/engaging.
I'll take that into consideration.

Thank you very much for your generous feedback, suggestions, and advice. I
really appreciate your candor and time you put into exploring Link. I look
forward to continued growth and learning as part of this community. Thank
you!

[Coworking] Good news from Alltop

2010-04-15 Thread Liz Elam
Good Afternoon Coworking Community,

I hit up Guy Kawasaki at www.Alltop.com http://www.alltop.com/ about
adding Coworking as a category under work. I just heard back and they have
agreed to add Coworking if I can provide them with 15 feeds. I told them I
thought I could supply at least 100 (they were excited about that).

Please email me off list at l...@linkcoworking.com (with just your RSS link
in the subject line) if you would like me to submit you to Alltop. I don’t
control what they post or in what order. In addition, after I send them the
list it will be up to Alltop to maintain the content on their site. I will
send the email to Alltop at 5:00 CST on Monday the 19th.

I think this will be a great win for our community.

Liz

Big press makes my mother happy and improves our google ranking. All that
aside, we haven't had anyone serious about signing up that said I heard
about you in the WSJ. It does get us many interesting calls about opening
in other locations. Being involved in the local community is orders of
magnitude more effective.

RE: [Coworking] Membership Data

Better late than never. I'm organizing and opening emails from 2 weeks ago!

2) max capacity for single seating - 75 for events 125
3) the website really helps, I'm challenged to update out via email. Need

Subject: [Coworking] Membership Data

Happy Monday everyone! As you guys know, Andrew Bushnell and I are
working on opening Cospace in Austin, Tx. We are in the process of
writing our business plan, and I need some help with membership data.
If possible, please answer the 3 questions below. Any and all input is
appreciated!

1) How many coworking members do you have? (feel free to guesstimate,
use averages, etc - whatever you feel comfortable providing)
2) How many members can your space hold?
3 Any success stories or obstacles in growing your member base?

Just a little blurb about us. We have been working hard to build our
pre-open community through Jellies and Meetups. Coworking is not a
new trend here in Austin, but it does fly under the radar on our side
of town. Finding the right space seems to be pretty tough, but we
believe that the demand is high. Our plan is to provide a good amount
of meeting / event space as well. But, ultimately we know that it's
all about the community!

Thanks again for any help!

Hello All - I was in Atlanta 2 weeks ago and went to see RoamAtlanta. They
don't brand themselves as Coworking (which I thought was interesting).
If I understood correctly they are opening a second space in Alpharetta and
then looking to open a third in Houston.

Hey Brewinupbiz,

There's actually a coworking space very close to opening in Decatur
and local hosting company, A Small Orange, is in the process of
opening an in-city space, likely in Midtown. They are currently
polling the Atlanta community in support of this effort --
http://twurl.nl/bdo0ef
Perhaps you should touch base with them first? Also, if you're not
aware, there is a coworking space a bit outside of Atlanta in
Alpharetta called Roam Atlanta (www.roamatlanta.com)

Did you happen to come out to the meetings we hosted last year about
opening a coworking space in Atlanta or is this a recent effort?

Best,
