Re: [css-d] IE6 causes layout to grow vertically

2007-06-26 Thread Marcus Taylor
Hi Matthew,

I tried clearing the cache and it's still happening.

I am running Windows XP and IE6 too.

If you scroll to the very bottom so you can see the footer, mouse over any
link in the search return and watch the scroll bar grow and the space below
the footer grow.

Having done more research on IE bugs I am wondering if this is what's called
the Guillotine Bug?

Cheers,

Marcus

As you can see I am pinning the footer to the bottom of the page, and in IE6

in the main search return content pane, the page grows by about 200px below
 the footer.

 Marcus,

I am having trouble re-creating the problem using the Search Return link
above. I am running Windows XP Home and using IE 6.0. Perhaps its a
browser cache problem? Have you tried clearing your cache and temp files?

[css-d] Advice desired

2007-06-26 Thread Gerry Goodfriend
Hi all,

I'm very new to CSS and XHTML, knowing nothing about it as of 2
months ago. I'm also 64 and so my ability to remember many things is
showing signs of decline. I inherited a site and was in the process
of trying to eliminate all the errors W3C had pointed out, but I
decided I would just make everything look better (all the boxes had
right aligned text!), and then later, I would make a change in the
design. I have recreated the page error free but am unable to place
the navigation tabs where they belong, and the side borders do not
appear. I have grown to like the layout and would like to keep it.

I would like to know what people think of the page and how I should
proceed to improve it.

Thanks,
Gerry

[css-d] see #F3F1E9 on WinMac: weren't Web-safe colours dead?

2007-06-26 Thread Luca Postpischl

I was playing around with colors for a css-layout and got pretty
satisfied with a light-browns/sandy combination [#E6E3D7 - #F3F1E9]
on firefox/OSX. [see http://www.bo.ingv.it ]
Then I watched it from a windows box (IE and Firefox) and it looks
completely shifted (light-greys/bluish).

the win-box scren is set to 32-bit colors hence it is not a color-
space remapping/redux issue...

I tested the same colors with Mac Win Gamma settings in Photoshop
and could not reproduce those greys either...

What might such a color-shift be about?
... whole sites and communities discussing color palettes and their
implications and there's still no-way to garantee an hex-value is
rendered consistently in any browser ?!

Thanks, ciao

Hex values are unambiguous and consistent in meaning - but screens are
not. What's causing the difference is not the browser but the box itself.

Try re-callibrating your monitors acording to their instruction manuals.

There's no guarantee the exact same browser and OS, the exact same
model graphics card and the exact same model display will have
consistent display. Things such as the configured colour temperature
will play into account. Also the screen brightness and environment
colouring and lighting will affect the percieved colour.

[css-d] strange display error in IE 6

2007-06-26 Thread Christian Kirchhoff

Hallo,

If you compare the appearance of this page:
http://testwww.zeno.org/Bibliothek/Zeno/0/Profisuche?m=1 in Firefox with the
one in IE 6, you may recognize that (most of the times when the page is
loaded) there is some text misssing above the serach form in the middle.

The header (Erweiterte Suche) ist not shown at all, neither it's
background color, nor ist white text nor ist border-bottom.

The sentence following the header is invisible, too.

If I do a select all, the hidden text is not selected. But I can select it
manually by dragging the mouse over it.

If you refresh the page, sometimes the header and that first paragraph are
drawn, sometimes not.

In addition, the footer line (ZenoServer 1.5.41 ...) is supposed to be
outside of the blue rectangle. And it is in Firefox and IE 7 - but not in IE
6...

Could anybode tell me what's wrong there?

 hi -

i keep coming across this issue, and i can't seem to
 find anything in a
 google search ...

i want to replace text with an image, and have the
 image change its
background position on hover, but it's not part of a
 navlist - it's
either placed under a p or floated next to a p.

somehow, my brain doesn't know how to approach this
 if it's not part of
a navlist. i keep thinking that if i wrap the
 hyperlink in an a and
move it off the screen, then apply a background
 image to, say, a p,
how does the background position of one element
 change when you hover
 over the other?

or, if i place the background image on the a, in
 order to take
advantage of the hover property to move the
 background position, do i
then have to use a span to contain the text and
 move it off the
screen? i usually avoid the IR method involving
 spans, but maybe this
is just the way to do this technique, i don't know.

i am probably thinking about it all wrong, or making
 it more complicated
 than it really is...

can someone point me to a link, if you have one,
 that might address this
specific issue? all i've been able to find is
 regarding navigation lists.

 thanks in advance!

Yes, that's correct. I haven't looked at your CSS, but are you taking into

[css-d] gradient shadow not covering float

2007-06-26 Thread Bruce Gilbert
hello,

on my test page here:

http://www.mellonaidftp.com/ssri/test.php

there is a gradient that starts below where the big brown image place holder
is, where you see the breadcrumb links and printer/email a friend icons.
This gradient needs to extend all the way to the right behind the third
column where you see the latest news/upcoming events/Meet the Team boxes.
but the gradient is stopping in front of that div.

I thought it might be a float clearing issue so I added the CSS found here:
http://www.positioniseverything.net/easyclearing.html

and applied class=clearfix to the divs involved, but this doesn't seem to
fix the problem. The gradient still does not continue behind the
'InformationColumn' div.

any suggestions?

the full CSS is here:

http://www.mellonaidftp.com/ssri/CSS/main.css

thanks in advance!

[css-d] Urgent help required!

2007-06-26 Thread Martin Paton
Hi

I have a design review tomorrow PM with a site and I need some urgent
help getting something to be IE6 compliant.

The pages are:

http://pkl.net/~toasty/site/process_Test.htm
http://pkl.net/~toasty/site/home.htm
http://pkl.net/~toasty/site/quality.htm

I have no problems with Firefox or Opera, or even IE7 for the most part.

It's just damned IE6. We are not supporting IE5.5, thankfully.

If there's anything you can suggest or help me with I will be eternally
grateful.

Specific problems

3 column layout breaks (IE6) - columns aren't right colours, etc.
   Menu breaks (IE6)
Banner image header drops on resize (IE6)

Green arrow bullets in centre column don't drop as expected (IE7) -
right column floats over them.

Thank you!

Regards,
MP

Re: [css-d] I cant get list style - help!

2007-06-26 Thread Susan Grossman
Mandy,

Have you tried qualifying your class

#navlist li.subnavlist {
   list-style-type: square;
  }

If you can send a link it'd be easier to troubleshoot

I would like square bullets on my left hand menu but just cant get it to
do it. I added this style to the style sheet #navlist .subnavlist
{list-style-type: square;} and that didn't do it. If anyone can help I
 would be very grateful.

[css-d] List problem

2007-06-26 Thread Luc
 Good evening list,

i have a nav menu that uses a class called active to indicate the
current page. The class uses a background image but i can't seem to
set the distance between the image and the links. I've been
experimenting with both margins and padding but to no avail.

It's been puzzling me to death.

Here's how it should look like:
