[css-d] how to get rid of scroll bar at bottom of page

How to do I get rid of the scroll bar at the bottom of the page? I would
like the phantom scroller on the right side to keep balance when a page
that needs to be scrolled down does not shift.

Thank you J

 Oh man what browser/os is this? It does not look right at all.

On Windows Vista, looks fine in Chrome, IE8, Firefox, and Safari, as long as
the window is large enough. But look at it in a 800x600 window. The header
image reduces to fit, while the navigation bar causes a scroll bar, so that
there is a gap to the right of the header image when you scroll right. Kind
of strange looking, I think. I'd say that wasn't a problem, since so few
people browse on their computers at 800x600. But given this behavior, I'm
surprised that it looks fine on a Droid X -- the entire image and navigation
magnify and reduce together.

Beth Lee

Yeh that bits cool.
I went to one of the gallery pages - there no loader and it was quite a wait
for the first large image. Whilst waiting the border does not sit where it
should be, it is up and behind the thumbs. I would have thought a .clear in
the thumbnail container would fix it.

My Chrome browser is adding margin: 1em 40px; to your style sheet because
you haven't specified a right or bottom margin.

Add the following line to your blockquote statement:
margin-right: 12px;

Or just have one line for the margins:
margin: 0 12px 16px -5px;

(Why do you have 2 colors in your statement?)

 http://www.ecoitsf.com/test/testimonials.shtml

[...]

It's the line box for the last line that causes the gap. Because the
span.close is inline, the last line is 5em tall. The reason is not obvious
as the closing quote mark appears lower than the actual space it takes up in
the document. (Look up relative positioning.)

Solution: Make the span display: block; and it won't affect the line box.

Thank you David. This removes the space but puts the end quotes to a left
align.

No. The issue here is that CSS has no after click state.

It could (in theory -- I haven't tried) do this if you wanted the folder to
extend when you hover over it (:hover), or when you tab on to it with the
keyboard (:focus) (including the graphics), but it can't do it on a click.
You need Javascript to catch the click and do something with it (ie switch
the
CSS from display: none to display: block).

notice the navigation was getting clipped on her Mac. If anyone has a Mac
and you let me know what browser and OSv you are running if you have the
clipping issue occurring?

if there is a way to have the images start a second column when a fixed

However, there are some limitations:

  The number of selectors on line 29 to 35 have to be equal to the expected

should be 5 selectors.
 Does not work in IE6.

Perhaps someone can improve this design?

Hi Chetan,

Thank you for looking at this test piece. I am going to have a look at the
code tomorrow. I am however looking at the link you posted and notice that
the layout may work except the images placement is a little different than
what I was thinking. The height would not be an issue for the horizontal
layout as long as the width was dynamic as images are added.

Have a look at these two images to see what I mean as far as layout. I
figured out how to stack the images vertically as you can see in the html
not jpg link and we may be able to implement your code to get it to work
with the layout I am proposing.

Image 1 indicate this first image added, image 6 indicates the last
image added.

Hi Chetan,

I had another quick look and this would absolutely work for the vertical
layout but having to add a line for each row may become arduous over time if
a lot of images are displayed.

[css-d] image layout question

2010-12-27 Thread Matthew P. Johnson
I am working on a personal project. I want to be able to accomplish several
things and am wondering if it is possible using css to do so. Here is the
list.

!--

this is a project to figure out how to do several things

this has to be accomplished by not using fixed positions.

1. how to align images vertically from the top down or bottom to top? div
must have fixed width so when photos are added to the beginning of the list
the older photos move into position after new photo.

2. how to align images from right to left instead of the default left to
right? div must have fixed width so when photos are added to the beginning
of the list the older photos move into position after new photo.

once item 1. and 2. are figured out, can i just add an image to the top of
the

img list and have the image add itself to the beginning of the page. re:
new

photo's will be at the front of the page and older images at the end of the
page.

3. how do i swap css so the user can choose how to view the images?

ex: oldest photo's first. oldest photos first.
oldest photos on top. oldest photos on bottom.

[css-d] image gallery question

2010-12-20 Thread Matthew P. Johnson
Happy Holidays to everyone J

I am trying to figure out a way to have the thumbnails be a resize of the
original image rather than a cropped section of the original image and also
be able to format the larger image css so I can keep the border.

I have been able to create resized thumbs then I lose the ability to format
the larger image since I pass the larger image to a thumb.

I am not sure if this is a CSS only question or if the CSS and JS need to be
altered.

I am also looking for a better image gallery but the thing I do like about
this gallery is that all I have to do to add images is resize the larger
image and add a line of code and I am done so it works well for regular
edits without having to run the image set through a program every time we
need to update.

@Thierry: All valid criticisms. However, when one wants to do anything
fancy with plain HTML and CSS2, it is often at the cost of semantic
correctness.

 fwiw, I would not call this solution a good implementation. It is not

There is a small white space above the Applegate Elements graphic at the top
of the page. I usually avoid this with the code I have in the css but for
some reason it is still there.

[Matthew P. Johnson] nevermind. I figured it out.:)

[css-d] ie menu formatting issue

2010-11-29 Thread Matthew P. Johnson
Hello Everyone,

I am trying to figure out why in all browsers but IE (8 and 9 tested) when
you mouse over photo gallery

1. The green border cuts off on the upper right of the subnav border.

2. entry level - living truncates. This does not happen in
Safari/Chrome/FF. Unfortunately we still live in an IE world.

Here is a link to the nav I am working on.

Try approaching it as a division of labor by isolating only the navigation
menu itself on the page...

Hi David,

I have been doing just that. I can center the nav from the left hand side of
the nav but I get stuck there. I can figure out how to center the nav from
the center of the nav if that makes sense, only from the far left hand side
of the nav.

The definition for #nav in MenuMatic.css has text-align:right.
#nav{
display:block;
position: absolute;
list-style:none;
margin:0 0 0 -280px;
width:186px;
z-index:5;
top:10px; /* this has to be the same as #content in style.css */
left:33%; /* this has to be the same as #content in style.css */
text-align: right;
display:block;
}

That's the problem, change it to text-align:center. Or if you don't have
direct access to MenuMatic.css, add a definition to style.css with
!important.

Noob here. I'm trying to display the work section on my page by having the

If the user selects a different project from the list on the left, the

What technique is recommended here? A parent slider to house all the
projects and then individual sliders for each project?

I've danced around google, css3 animation jquery tutorials with little
luck. Any help would be kindly appreciated.

I will play with that idea. I did try to use nested div's with the
background-color set and did not see a result.

Hello,

Have you tried to put a div containing your navigation and, inside
that div, have a background-image property defined pointing to your
image?
What kind of image? Do you intend to repeat over the x-axis ?

Regards,
Márcio

ps-
Note as well, that despite the fact that it works, div align, I
believe, as been deprecated.
You can give a width to your element, and add margin:0 auto; for centering it.

There is a contradiction in your CSS. For example the CSS for #container is as
follows:

#container {
margin : 0 auto;
width : 800px;
text-align : left;
margin-top : 38px;
}

I suggest comment out the margin-top to show this:

/* margin-top : 38px; */

Save the file file and then view it in your IE and Mozilla to see if it has
changed.

When you say Margin 0 auto, you are effectively saying top and bottom margins
to be 0 and right and left margins to be auto. but the subsequesnt line of
margin-top over-rides top margin to 38px.

Not trying to blow you out of the water but I'd seriously consider
starting over with a clean sheet.

Make a big box and put smaller boxes in it. Put stuff in the boxes. Find
a menu that is known to work cross-browser: put it in a box. Validate
the markup and CSS frequently. Test it cross-browser frequently. Avoid
using inline styling within the markup. Avoid drawing a horizontal
scrollbar.

If you are up for it, maybe this will help get it started.

Quick checked in FF, Safari, Opera, IE/8 (and IE 6/7).

Good luck, and best...

Thank you for the advice and I may just scrap it and start over but I really
want to figure this out. It is not for a client but for my girlfriend. I am
going to put a little more after hours time into it before I give up. The
site is mostly to show people photos so I want the hor nav to maximize
viewable space for the images.

If anyone has any other advice on this issue that would be great. I will
post once I figure out the issue.

This mar or may not the most elegant fix but it works. And it validates. It
turns out there is a bug in ie8 which you can read about here

http://www.inventpartners.com/content/ie8_margin_top_bug

My solution was to add a clear div before the div I needed to position via
margin-top

Line 204
div style=clear: both;/div

If anyone has a better solution I would love to hear it. Also if anyone has
tips to improve the code I am using I would love to hear the best practice.

Yes. Take out those br tags so the negative margin is not needed. The
negative margin-top is px, while br tags create space based on size of
line-height, which will be different from px in a great many circumstances.

Because the contact page doesn't have a vertical scrollbar on the right, but
the agreement page does. The whole page is jogging, not just the navigation.
And actually, the contact page seems to be *stretching*, along with the jogging.

Your HTML still has a few errors.

I can't get your CSS page to validate. It's still loading in the validator.
Still loading...still loading...still loading...

A fix someone here gave me for the scrollbar issue is to set your html as html
{ height: 100.1%;} This makes all the pages have a scrollbar, whether they need
it or not. My personal feeling on the matter is that you won't really notice or
care about the scrollbar unless it's evident that more content needs to be
viewed. If it's evident you've seen all the content, you won't be confused by
its presence, because it fills the length of the scrollbar area. On the other
hand, you do immediately notice if you're flipping through pages if the content
of the page is jogging back and forth. Personal preference.

...still loading...still loading. I don't know why your CSS is not loading into
the validator.

I have a 30 monitor (and a 20 - duals), and so if I take the browser window
and pull it out to encompass your content, no scroll bar. On the contact page,
if I make my window really small to be smaller than your content, I get a
scrollbar.

If I pull the window out the width of my monitor (or close), no horizontal
scrollbar. If I move it inward, scrollbar. I do notice that as I enlarge the
browser window, your banner art enlarges too. That's because you've set the
width of your header image to 100%, so it will enlarge to fit 100% of the
browser window. And if it enlarges via width, it enlarges via height, too.

That's what I do.

 I noticed the vertical scroll is causing the issue on pages where there is

 So do I have to give all the pages a vertical scroll bar to obtain
 consistency in the nav?

 I have a 30 monitor (and a 20 - duals), and so if I take the browser window
 and pull it out to encompass your content, no scroll bar. On the contact
 page, if I make my window really small to be smaller than your content, I get
 a scrollbar.

[css-d] nav container /?

2010-05-27 Thread Matthew P. Johnson
Please forgive my ignorance this may be a simple solution to some.

Is there a simple way to put a navigation menu bar into some sort of container
so when a change to the van bar needs to happen it can be done in one place
instead of having to change the code on all html pages?

I am still working on my girlfriends site. You can see what I mean at

Re: [css-d] how do i center this /?

2010-05-21 Thread Matthew P. Johnson
Your right. My bad I should have tested before posting. I assumed the
vert position was meant from the top of page not top of nav.

Thank you David.

 Hello again Matthew,

 It seems to me that adding the Kalsey tabs to your site as is
 should do what you want. You can check out the effect here:

 http://webwiz.robinshosting.com/temp/css-tabs/ecoitsf.html

 The only thing I added to the original code is a margin-top to the
 menu to give some room below the header. Otherwise it butts up
 against the bottom-- at all sizes of the header.

This looks great thank you.

Do you know how to change the color of the sub nav? When I change the color
nothing happens. The color remains the default color... I am more curious than
anything else why the color can not be changed.

You'll need something at least as strong to override it - or else edit
the existing CSS.

WRT to the hover color, he has added !important, which is almost
impossible to override. Again, I suggest you edit the original code.

AT the same time you do this, I suggest you apply the same styles to the
focus condition, for the sake of those with no mouse...
