Cederholm's is nice because it is available (multiple-format download at a
single price) in an iBooks-enhanced version that uses video to display the
intended look of various elements, where a progression of states can be shown.

Well... what about adding the same menu in both the vertical and
horizontal version so we can compare and see your points clearly? I
think I understand what you mean, it somehow feels "unnatural" the
movement you must do to chose an option, but I think this issue remains
whether is a vertical or an horizontal menu, since we use the same
pattern, we just change how do we start (vertical - [horizontal -
vertical] / [horizontal - vertical] - horizontal).

By the way, how come your comments _require_ JS to work? When
disabled, you don't provide the text-boxes neither a message to your users.

I think this is a matter of opinion and personal preference: that is. of
course, unless you can prove with hard science that one is better than
the other.

Did you have a CSS question?

[css-d] opinions: horizontal vs vertical menus

2007-10-18 Thread Roger Keays

Hi all,

Here are some thoughts from my blog @
http://www.sunburnt.com.au/publications/design/horizontal-vs-vertical-menus

Just yesterday I had a request from a customer to build a vertical menu
down the side of the page in their design. I've always had a strong
preference for horizontal menus, but have never really known exactly
why. When trying to disuade my customer she naturally asked me this
question: why?

Well, now I've thought about it I've come to the conclusion that there
are some good reasons to go horizontal instead of vertical. Here are mine:

 * Being evenly distributed across the page, they create balance
which makes you feel good :)
 * They make better use of space as there is no vacuum below the
menu which is common with vertical menus.
 * It's easier to read horizontally than vertically.
 * It's easier to move mouse side to side than vertically.
 * Submenus are easier to access as they have a larger area for the
mouse to enter.
 * As people are generally lazy, the shorter menu items more common
in horizontal menus are easier to read.

What do you think?

I do not know what is bugging ie win/2k, or how to fix it. Perhaps

No expert here-- just another bozo on the bus. Anyway, you are doing
well, and a nice visual to boot, Luis. Something you may want to
consider is that it is a little brittle-- many pages are experiencing
float drop in IE at text-size largest; and, on the first zoom click in
the Gecko browsers. The crossover on zoom may be somewhat unavoidable
due to some very long words. It would be good idea to add a
background-color for your page (not everyone defaults to #FFF). No big
deal, if it is of any concern, the page appears to be usable but not
rendering as intended at smaller screen resolutions in IE win/2k.
A bunch of screen captures:

A question of laziness. I put the CSS twice because I get the CSSs paths
via a PHP variable. I will remove that for the release.

It tries to be a breadcrumb. But I'know that it do not works like I want.
As I begin to understand, designing sites i'ts more complicated than
print design
because you must think also about time or path of the visitor !-)

Site looks good - I guess it is a site pitched at recruitment from the
English version (although you need to address the translation which is not
correct).

On the design side, it would benefit greatly from the three columns being of
equal length.
