[CTRL] Vaticans use of Conspiracy Theory

2000-04-13 Thread David Sutherland

Preliminary thesis - that "Conspiracy Theory" is political plant by the
Vatican for the purpose of its Global Religio-Political paradigm and
dominion over humanity.

The Vatican's contribution, promulgation, and political manipulation of
"Conspiracy Theory" can be traced over many decades.

It has particularly been endorsed, propagandised, and applied by what has
been termed the Vatican's "Storm Troopers", who originally modelled
themselves on a military order - and are known as the Jesuits. Nazi Germany'
s Himmler himself remarked on his modelling the SS on the Order of his
backers - the RC Jesuits.

A common byword for Jesuits was Jesuitism, which term was associated with
the adage "The End Justifies the Means".

In recent history, we have the Vatican's political application of
"Conspiracy Theory" in such creations and mechanisms as follows:

In the not to distant past, we had the Jesuit incubated forgery, ala French
Jesuit named Abbe Barruel and the subsequent "Protocols of Zion" which was
reverenced by the Nazi's and which today's Neo Nazi's deem as a veritable
work of biblical proportion that "exposes" the evil plans of the fabled
worldwide "Jewish Conspiracy" to enslave humanity.

The conceptual inspiration for the Protocols can be traced back to the time
of the French Revolution at the end of the 18th century. At that time,
French Jesuit Abbe Barruel, representing reactionary elements opposed to the
revolution, published in 1797 a treatise blaming the Revolution on a secret
conspiracy operating through the Order of Freemasons - another favourite
Vatican scapegoat.

Barruel's idea was nonsense, since the French nobility at the time was
heavily Masonic, but he was influenced by a Scottish mathematician named
Robison who was opposed to the Masons. In his treatise, Barruel did not
himself blame the Jews, who were emancipated as a result of the Revolution.

However, in 1806, Barruel circulated a forged letter, probably sent to him
by members of the state police opposed to Napoleon Bonaparte's liberal
policy toward the Jews, calling attention to the alleged part of the Jews in
the conspiracy he had earlier attributed to the Masons. This myth of an
international Jewish conspiracy reappeared later on in 19th century Europe
in places such as Germany and Poland.

Though proved in a court of law to be a forgery that is, a fakery - certain
conspiracy devotees non-the-less revere the "Protocols" as a genuine
blueprint for the planned conspiratorial method of a Jewish elite for a
complete global take-over.

In an even more recent era, to the quote the author's term, "inspiration"
from the General of the Roman Catholic Jesuit Order, "the Black Pope" Pedro
Arrupe was what Gary Allen received for his enormously populist mega-hit
bestseller, "None Dare Call it Conspiracy".

Allen therein attack's every imaginable evil and ungodly foe that his
"inspirer", Jesuit General Pedro Arrupe - who was himself a proponent
Marxist Liberation Theology - condemns as globalist devils of "freedom".

Of course, we would be amiss not to mention Vatican Jesuit Georgetown
University and the conspirators Hercules - Professor Carroll Quigley, who
wrote the mega-tome, and the conspirator's grand saga; "Tragedy and Hope",
now also adored as one more holy book of those that hold to the Cosmic Grim
view of the universe.

The work is all the more venerated due to its now apparent rarity, and hence
its relic-like attraction for the "Conspiracy Theory" faithful who ardently
sermonise from its weighty writ.

US president Clinton, who was trained in Global Politics at the Vatican's
Jesuit Georgetown University, has also heaped praise on Quigley.
Undoubtedly, the Vatican, and its Jesuits concept of "moral theology" has
rubbed-off onto Mr Clinton who has since expounded and put into practice the
Jesuits elevated "moral theology" in the Office of President.

Quigley, highly esteemed by his former student, William Jefferson Blythe
Clinton, indoctrinated the future leader of the world's most powerful nation
with Vatican ideals, and also Jesuit notions of the "vast Right Wing
Conspiracy" theory, of which his sturdy, victimised by his very infidelity,
but stalwart mate would one day expose to the panting media as the cause of
the paranoid pairs many vicissitudinous misfortunes.

It has been an oft attempt to discover in Quigley's conspiracy tome, where
in fact he indicts his own University's Jesuit Order in the Grand and Global
Conspiracy schema.

After all, it is common knowledge that the Vatican for a time itself
suppressed the Jesuit Order for its vast political intrigues and asserted
attempted and delivered assassinations of heads of State. Quigley's pallid
silence on the Jesuits appears ominously indicative.

Shall it not also be made mention of another nefariously known Jesuit - an
infamous fellow, said to be another "rogue" from the stable of the "Eternal
City" of Roma, one Jesuit inspired and trained Adam Weishapt.

[CTRL] Nation Shocked by Pre-Natal Shooting (fwd)

2000-04-13 Thread MICHAEL SPITZER

ALBUQUERQUE, NM--Investigators are trying to determine what led
an unborn child to fatally shoot his twin with a .38-caliber
revolver during an altercation in their shared Albuquerque womb
Monday.

According to police, the twins' mother, Evelyn Alpert, 34, was
awakened at 4 a.m. by the sensation of a scuffle in her uterus,
which she dismissed as "routine kicking." Approximately 30
minutes later, Alpert heard and felt three pistol shots.

A subsequent forensic ultrasound revealed that the unborn
gunman--identified as a five-inch-tall male Caucasian of slight
build with no eyes or hair--shot his brother twice in what
eventually would have become his heart.

After a tense four-hour standoff, the unborn gunman threw out his
weapon when police threatened to induce labor. Police spokesmen
have denied that the use of tear gas or forced C-section was ever
considered. Alpert was unharmed in the shooting, with two of the
bullets lodging themselves in the victim and the third passing
harmlessly through the birth canal.

The shooter has yet to emerge from the crime scene, but a
court-appointed lawyer has said that the fetus will surrender
himself peacefully upon his post-partum separation from Alpert
sometime in early October.

"This whole tragic chain of events is hard to comprehend,"
Albuquerque mayor Jim Baca said. "Where did we as a community
fail these unborn boys? Could their parents have done a better
job of conceiving, carrying, and pre-natally educating them?
And how did the fetus get access to firearms?"

Police officials say the shooter used a revolver registered to
his father, Lee Alpert, who may have left the firearm within
reach of his wife's womb. No charges have been filed against the
man at press time.

According to Albuquerque D.A. Eugene Billups, though the
assailant is legally recognized as a fetus, he will be tried as
an infant. Pretrial hearings begin next week, and ultrasound
technicians will not be allowed in the courtroom.

"This is hard to take," Billups told reporters. "These kids were
no more than babies."

Offering the Alpert family "my deepest sympathy and support in
this difficult time," President Clinton said he is redoubling his
efforts to pass tougher obstetric gun-control legislation.

"Last year, I called upon Congress to require trigger locks on
handguns and place metal detectors at the entrance of every
womb," Clinton said at a White House press conference. "Such
laws may well have saved the life of that unborn child. I now
ask Congress to do the right thing and pass that legislation, as
well as a measure extending the waiting period for firearms
beyond nine months. We must keep handguns out of the unformed
hands of our nation's fetuses."

The fetus, following the advice of his attorney, has offered no
comment on the shooting.

[CTRL] WS: The Justice Dept. and the Rule of Law (fwd)

2000-04-13 Thread MICHAEL SPITZER

From:

http://www.weeklystandard.com/magazine/mag_5_30_00/caldwell_ed_5_30_00.html

Editorial April 17, 2000/Volume 5, Number 30
The "Justice" Dept. and the Rule of Law
by Christopher Caldwell

One of the first news photos of Juan Miguel González arriving at
Dulles International Airport to reclaim his son Elián showed him
in mid-stride, so you could see the soles of his shoes. They were
unmarred by any contact with pavement; they'd obviously been in a
box when the plane took off from Havana. Had he bought himself a
new pair of shoes for the trip? Unlikely, once you looked at his
shirt-collar, which was two inches too big for his neck. Clearly
it was the Cuban government that had decided how to present Juan
Miguel to the American public, and that should not be surprising.
With the collusion of the Clinton administration, they've called
the tune of this custody battle since last Thanksgiving, when
Elián was found tied to an inner tube three miles off the Florida
coast.

Standing in his fishy suit, Juan Miguel gave a bizarre speech.
"For exactly 137 days," he said, "I have lived unjustly and
cruelly separated from my son." Whose injustice would that be?
Whose cruelty? "I became aware how during this time my son was
being subjected to cruel psychological pressures intended to
influence his character. . . . And as if that were not enough,
Elián has been exhibited in parades. . . . " When? What parades?
Most stunning was his description of the L·zaro González family
of Miami as "distant relatives he had never seen or who had met
him only once." Your father's brother is hardly a "distant
relative." And "met him only once" is a dismissive way to
describe the extraordinary two-week visit that L·zaro and DelfÌn
González made to Cuba in 1998, for the express purpose of
visiting Juan Miguel and his son. Said Juan Miguel González to
his Cuban TV audience on the night of his arrival, "Those people
really don't want the best for my son." That's a weird way to
characterize the very people Juan Miguel phoned the day after
Elián's departure to alert them that their nephew was on his way.

Mr. González's statements since arriving from Cuba last Thursday
to claim custody of his son have been so far removed from reality
as to raise the possibility that he is out of his mind. But we
pass no judgment on Mr. González's decency or his fitness as a
father. We do not underestimate the pressures he is under,
political and otherwise. NBC reported last week that Mr.
González's mother, who remains in Havana, has been moved to a
secure government building for the duration of his trip. We think
it likely he is operating under coercion, or at least strong
influence.

There is another possibility, of course-that Mr. González is the
sincerest of Communists. There's some evidence for this. He has
been described in press accounts as a doorman, security guard,
cash register operator, and the employee of a tourist agency-a
protean job description that fits many an Interior Ministry
secret policeman. Mr. González lives in a protocol house in a
diplomatic neighborhood, of the sort the writer Gabriel GarcÌa
M·rquez lives in; he has air conditioning in a country where many
lack electricity.

There may be a good explanation for Mr. González's cushy setup
and his strange comportment in the United States. But whatever
that explanation is, we don't yet have it, and only a court of
law can give it to us. So why is the Clinton administration doing
everything it can to keep this case out of a court of law?

To listen to the Clinton administration, the sudden visit of Juan
Miguel González, after four months' absence spent largely
calumniating the United States, should arouse no suspicion and
requires no explanation. "The law is very clear," says Attorney
General Janet Reno. "A child who's lost his mother belongs with
the sole surviving parent." What law is that? The
Child-Who-Lost-His-Mother Law? If this is what the debate was
about, why didn't you tell us in the first place?

Because this is the exact opposite of what the administration
argued in the first place. The administration now insists
emphatically that it has no way to stop the process of hustling
Elián back to Cuba. (Although it claims to prefer that Juan
Miguel and his Castroite handlers stay until the appeal by
Elián's Miami relatives of the INS decision reaches the appeals
court.) But the administration's insistence is simply not true.
The INS can issue a no-exit order for anyone-including you or
me-at its discretion. It can mandate that Elián stay by the very
same authority under which it now mandates-yes, mandates-that he
be sent back to Cuba.

Nor has this always been the administration's position. In the
days following Elián's rescue, spokesmen for the U.S. Border
Patrol announced that Elián could stay, the INS issued a
statement that Elián's fate was a matter for state court (or
family court if it came to a custody battle), and the State
Department concurred. It's the INS that paroled

Forrester Research Predicts The Imminent Demise Of Most Dot Com
Retailers

Cambridge, Mass., April 11, 2000 . . . The combination of weak
financials, increasing competitive pressures, and investor flight
will drive most of today's Dot Com retailers out of business by
2001. According to a new Report from Forrester Research, Inc.
(Nasdaq: FORR), to survive in the online retail battleground,
firms will need to redirect extravagant branding investments into
three categories of hard assets, defined by scale, service, and
speed.

"It's time to face facts: Online retail's honeymoon is over,"
said Joe Sawyer, senior analyst at Forrester. "The difficulties
that firms like CDnow and Peapod now face will only become more
widespread. Financial turbulence and new competition will dry up
venture funding and accelerate the Dot Com shakeout as the year
progresses."

Forrester believes that consolidation will occur in three waves.
First, firms selling commodity products that have been successful
since the Net's early days -- such as books, software, and
flowers -- will consolidate by the fall of 2000 amid slowing
annual growth rates. Second, the plethora of merchants selling
undifferentiated products at razor-thin margins -- including pet
supplies, toys, and consumer electronics -- will collapse before
marketing expenditures ramp up for the next holiday season.
Finally, online merchants selling heavily branded, high-style
products like apparel and furniture will remain stable until
2002.

To survive consolidation, online retailers must anchor themselves
by building sustainable assets that will attain scale, service,
and speed. Leaders will need to focus on hard assets that support
high sales volumes and lower costs per transaction: a large,
loyal customer base; in-house fulfillment capabilities; and a
rock-solid internal organization. Online retailers must strike
back at brand confusion and product duplication by distinguishing
themselves through customer service. Presence across multiple
channels and platforms, exclusive manufacturer deals to carry
specific products, and a range of delivery options will help to
build lifetime relationships. Speed will keep retailers ahead of
rivals, but it will also require a flexible business foundation.
Retailers should adopt technologies and strategies that adjust to
unforeseen competitive forays and customer demands.

Several leaders will prevail following the wave of retail
consolidation. Brick-and-mortar retailers will regain their
footing, leveraging assets like customer history, product
selection, fulfillment, and strong manufacturer relationships.
Catalog hybrids will also survive, given their large customer
base, proprietary product lines, and solid fulfillment.

"Among all the online-retail pioneers, only Amazon can claim a
balanced set of assets that guarantees its leadership," added
Sawyer. "Pure plays with few hard assets beyond solid,
full-function sites will fall by the wayside, unable to keep up
with their multichannel peers."

For the Report "The Demise Of Dot Com Retailers," Forrester
surveyed 50 leading retailers representing a mix of product
categories and backgrounds. Eight-six percent of respondents
identified growth as their No. 1 strategic priority in 2000,
followed by improved site design, increased brand recognition,
and raised customer satisfaction.

Microsoft's friend in need

By Donald Lambro

One of the most underreported developments in the Microsoft
case is the news that Bill Clinton wants to be briefed on the
Justice Department's recommendations in the penalty phase of the
antitrust action.

Mr. Clinton's request was made public shortly after he and
Microsoft's Bill Gates met at a White House technology conference
last week. Did Mr. Gates and Mr. Clinton talk about the immense
harm that court-imposed regulations would have on the successful
software giant and on the high-tech industry as a whole?

A Microsoft official told me Mr. Gates "never had any
private time with the president" while he was here. But it is
known that Mr. Clinton has raised concerns with top advisers
about the potential for another plunge in the financial markets
if the penalties sought by the department's antitrust attorneys
go too far in attempting to stifle Microsoft's freedom to
innovate, promote and sell its software products.

Mr. Clinton's deputy general counsel and chief fixer, Bruce
Lindsey, has said that if the case were settled, "We would be
entitled to be involved" in discussions. Mr. Lindsey said the
president's participation would be justified because it would
involve "policy decisions." Now he has extended that to the
penalty phase of the trial.

But Mr. Clinton knows there is much more riding on this case
than just antitrust policy. There is Al Gore's presidential
campaign and the need to keep the economy humming along smoothly
for the next seven months to help pave the way for his election.
An economic downturn or a loss of confidence in the financial
markets — whose phenomenal growth has been driven by the
high-tech sector — would hurt Mr. Gore's chances in what is
shaping up to be a tight election.

Thus, look for Mr. Clinton to intercede in the case to rein
in the antitrust zealots, insiders tell me. Mr. Clinton cannot
afford to risk a severe penalty against Microsoft that could
trigger another sharp sell-off in tech stocks and could cause a
severe reaction throughout the wider financial markets. Clinton
advisers tell me he worries that the anti-free-market
trustbusters at Justice "could go too far."

Another try at a settlement is also a possibility, with Mr.
Clinton pushing both sides to come together for one more attempt
to reconcile differences — and perhaps putting pressure on the
Justice Department to cut a deal.

While Mr. Clinton was signaling he has no problems playing
politics with antitrust decisions, Republican strategists and
technology-industry leaders — including Mr. Gates — were
surprised and disappointed by George W. Bush's anemic,
middle-of-the-road statement in the wake of last week's court
ruling.

It is well-known that Mr. Bush opposes this case, yet he
refused to say so forthrightly. Last week, he issued a terse,
two-sentence statement that said it would be "inappropriate to
discuss the specifics" of the case while it is pending before the
court. Worse, he added that as president he would "fully enforce
antitrust laws to foster competition."

That Mr. Bush, a harsh critic of government regulations of
the economy, would embrace the antiquated 110-year-old Sherman
Antitrust laws, which are desperately in need of reform, is a
mystery. It is also a clue he is not getting the kind of
politically adept economic advice he needs in these matters.

"I wish he would have taken a stronger position," said
Jonathan Zuck, head of the Association for Competitive
Technology, which represents 9,000 high-tech companies.

Wall Street economist Larry Kudlow, who advises many GOP
candidates on economic policy, was similarly disappointed by Mr.
Bush's statement. This was a chance for Mr. Bush to stake out his
differences on economic policy with the Clinton-Gore
administration, and he did not seize it.

"There's a huge wedge issue here for Bush, if he's true to
his instincts and makes the case against anti-consumer and
anti-growth and anti-stock-market trustbusting," said Mr. Kudlow
— who should be on Mr. Bush's team of advisers, but hasn't been
asked.

But while Mr. Bush and his campaign were refusing to say
anything critical about the case last week, some of his closest
aides were telling me Mr. Bush would never have permitted this
case to go forward, and that if he is elected president he will
"drop it."

"This is not a case he would support as president," a
political adviser to Mr. Bush told me.

Said another economic and legal adviser to the Texas
governor: "If this was still on appeal by the time he came into
office, and had not reached the Supreme Court, I think he would
do what happened in the IBM case. I think the suit would be
dropped."

The Justice Department's antitrust suit against IBM was
dropped soon after Ronald Reagan took office. Mr. Bush's advisers
say he would do the same.

 Mr. Bush's hostility toward trial

Subject: [turmel] Report on April 1 IMF-World Bank Florham Protest Part A
Date: Tuesday, April 04, 2000 12:38 PM

STAR-LEDGER ARTICLE ABOUT IMF-WORLD BANK CONFERENCE
JCT: I first became aware of the IMF-World Bank meeting from the
article in the New Jersey Star Ledger of March 29 2000 titled:

"World Bank meeting to draw protesters"
by Margaret McHugh.

Law enforcement officials through Morris County are bracing for a 48-
hour protest of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund
conference that begins tomorrow in Florham Park.

Though neither police nor protesters predict anything close to the
large crowds and melee that disrupted the World Trade Organization
meeting in Seattle in December, police intend to be prepared for the
worst. "We're trying to balance both sides here, the right of the
people to protest and the right of the World Bank to conduct their
meeting" said Deputy Chief Edward Facas of the Morris County
Prosecutor's Office. "It's a juggling act, and we're in the middle."

The New Jersey/New York Mobilization for Global Justice, a coalition
of 30 environmental, civil rights and religious organizations, planned
the florham Park protest a month ago as a prelude to a massive
demonstration to be held in Washington, D.C., in mid-April. "Somebody
saw something about the conference on the World Bank web site,"
organizer Jim Burchell said.
JCT: It's funny that there was no mention of it on the a16
newsgroups that I'm subscribed to. Even though everyone at the meeting
was involved in getting ready for the Washington protest.

More than 170 experts from throughout the world are scheduled to
attend the conference at the Hamilton Park conference hotel off Park
Avenue in Florham Park. The conference, titled "Emerging Markets in
the New Financial System: Managing Financial and Corporate Distress,"
will focus on the corporate and financial restructuring process under
way in Southeast Asia.
JCT: They're giving lessons on managing the distress they cause.

It is sponsored by the World Bank which provides loans to developing
countries; the IMF which lends money to struggling countries if they
agree to debt restructuring; and the Brookings Institution, a
Washington-based think tank. Protesters say the IMF and World Bank
share responsibility for an "unjust world economic system."

The conference was scheduled in August, months before the World Trade
Organization gathering in Downtown Seattle where more than 500
protesters were arrested and merchants reported $2 million in property
damage. The National Guard was also called in.
JCT: Other reports say that the damages and the "loss of
business" were $2 million. From my report on the Seattle protest,
there is no way that there was $2 million in damages but this is how
they exaggerate the threat. One reporter says $2 million in losses,
another translates that into $2 million in property damages.

But unlike the Seattle protest, or the planned demonstration in
Washington, D.C., the vigil and rally to be held in Florham Park are
not intended to shut down the meeting. Rather they are designed to
call attention to the protesters' concerns, Burchell said. "At no time
have we threatened any disruption," said Burchell, president of
Peaceworks, a group concerned with Latin America.

In fact, Burchell said he thinks "the local authorities are completely
overreacting. There may be more police than protesters," he said. The
coalition expects to maintain a presence of about 20 or 30 people
starting at 5p.m. tomorrow, as conference attendees arrive to
register. The biggest crowd, estimated at between 300 and 500, is
expected a rally to be held from noon to 5p.m Saturday, as the
conference wraps up. "We view the IMF/World Bank conference as an
opportunity to explain the implications of these undemocratic
institutions' unprecedented power to control the world economy and
harm the global environment," said Nicole Roskos of the Drew
University Environmental Action League. A "teach-in" to air the
protesters' concerns is scheduled for Friday at Drew University in
Madison.

The protesters won't be allowed on the grounds of Hamilton Park but
police made arrangements with Fairleigh Dickinson University to let
them set up in a parking lot next to the conference center.
Police also made arrangements for them to park at a corporate complex
down the road and provide a shuttle bus to the FDU parking lot,
Burchell said. "They are bending over backward to accommodate us," he
said.
JCT: How nice of the authorities to help keep it organized!

Representatives from law enforcement agencies throughout Morris County
will meet today to go over the strategy for the 48-hour protest,

What at total hoot! Thanks for this. Makes me think some
conspiracies are hereditary and not learned. Jacob and Ishmael in the
  Old Testament come to mind.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM--Investigators are trying to determine what
ledan unborn child to fatally shoot his twin with a
.38-caliberrevolver during an altercation in their shared Albuquerque
wombMonday.According to police, the twins' mother, Evelyn Alpert,
34, wasawakened at 4 a.m. by the sensation of a scuffle in her
uterus, which she dismissed as "routine kicking." Approximately
30minutes later, Alpert heard and felt three pistol shots.A
subsequent forensic ultrasound revealed that the unborngunman--identified
as a five-inch-tall male Caucasian of slightbuild with no eyes or
hair--shot his brother twice in whateventually would have become his
heart. After a tense four-hour standoff, the unborn gunman threw out
hisweapon when police threatened to induce labor. Police
spokesmenhave denied that the use of tear gas or forced C-section was
everconsidered. Alpert was unharmed in the shooting, with two of
thebullets lodging themselves in the victim and the third
passingharmlessly through the birth canal. The shooter has yet to
emerge from the crime scene, but acourt-appointed lawyer has said that the
fetus will surrenderhimself peacefully upon his post-partum separation
from Alpertsometime in early October."This whole tragic chain of
events is hard to comprehend,"Albuquerque mayor Jim Baca said.
"Where did we as a communityfail these unborn boys? Could their
parents have done a betterjob of conceiving, carrying, and pre-natally
educating them? And how did the fetus get access to
firearms?"Police officials say the shooter used a revolver registered
tohis father, Lee Alpert, who may have left the firearm withinreach of
his wife's womb. No charges have been filed against theman at press
time.According to Albuquerque D.A. Eugene Billups, though
theassailant is legally recognized as a fetus, he will be tried asan
infant. Pretrial hearings begin next week, and ultrasoundtechnicians
will not be allowed in the courtroom."This is hard to take," Billups
told reporters. "These kids wereno more than
babies."Offering the Alpert family "my deepest sympathy and support
inthis difficult time," President Clinton said he is redoubling
hisefforts to pass tougher obstetric gun-control legislation."Last
year, I called upon Congress to require trigger locks onhandguns and place
metal detectors at the entrance of everywomb," Clinton said at a White
House press conference. "Suchlaws may well have saved the life of
that unborn child. I nowask Congress to do the right thing and pass
that legislation, aswell as a measure extending the waiting period for
firearmsbeyond nine months. We must keep handguns out of the
unformedhands of our nation's fetuses."The fetus, following the
advice of his attorney, has offered nocomment on the
  shooting.###

Sorry Nick ... but heres where i'm gonna have to

Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I can't say i've heard of that "Davidy" guy, so

I did enjoy your "Blue Beam" stuff - i think if it
does exist, from what i read in the press, the Chinese are having a whirl at the
"paranormal" and "sightings" and plethora of UFO "activity".

Though in the West, we are far more open about it -

Re: [CTRL] WS: The Justice Dept. and the Rule of Law (fwd)

2000-04-13 Thread Ynr Chyldz Wyld

From: "MICHAEL SPITZER" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
One of the first news photos of Juan Miguel González arriving at
Dulles International Airport to reclaim his son Elián showed him
in mid-stride, so you could see the soles of his shoes. They were
unmarred by any contact with pavement; they'd obviously been in a
box when the plane took off from Havana. Had he bought himself a
new pair of shoes for the trip? Unlikely, once you looked at his
shirt-collar, which was two inches too big for his neck. Clearly
it was the Cuban government that had decided how to present Juan
Miguel to the American public, and that should not be surprising.
With the collusion of the Clinton administration, they've called
the tune of this custody battle since last Thanksgiving, when
Elián was found tied to an inner tube three miles off the Florida
 coast.

If the Administration was 'calling the tune', the kid would have been returned to Cuba
last November.

Oh, are these the same Miami relatives who now claim that Juan Miguel never had a
relationship with his own son before now?

 Said Juan Miguel González to
his Cuban TV audience on the night of his arrival, "Those people
really don't want the best for my son." That's a weird way to
characterize the very people Juan Miguel phoned the day after
Elián's departure to alert them that their nephew was on his way.

Any proof of this extraordinary assertion?

We think
it likely he is operating under coercion, or at least strong
 influence.

Perhaps the 'strong influence' is love of his sone, and the 'coercion' comes from the
Miami mob.

Interesting. Other anti-Castro-ites who in their attempts at keeping Elian here have
tried to paint his father as 'unfit', have
claimed his father lives in a converted garage...

But you still don't get it, that it matters not a whit what Elian's father does for a
living, as long as he makes an adequate living
to support the boy, and so is a fit parent. He deserves to have custody of his own
son. Whether he's a janitor or is a member of
Castro's cabinet doesn't matter.

There may be a good explanation for Mr. González's cushy setup
and his strange comportment in the United States. But whatever
that explanation is, we don't yet have it, and only a court of
law can give it to us. So why is the Clinton administration doing
everything it can to keep this case out of a court of law?

Because when has ANY case of illegal immigration gone to a 'court of law' and NOT been
decided directly by the INS itself? Why shou
ld this kid be treated differently than any other illegal immigrant from any other
country?

To listen to the Clinton administration, the sudden visit of Juan
Miguel González, after four months' absence spent largely
calumniating the United States, should arouse no suspicion and
 requires no explanation.

Why should it? Fathers in the U.S. go through out-of-state custody battles all the
time, and you don't see those fathers dropping
everything immediately and traveling out of state for a prolonged custody battle.
They have jobs and families to attend to back
home.

Why expect anything different from a Cuban father?

"The law is very clear," says Attorney
General Janet Reno. "A child who's lost his mother belongs with
the sole surviving parent." What law is that?

Most every state law. U.S. law. Cuban law. International law.

The INS can issue a no-exit order for anyone-including you or
me-at its discretion. It can mandate that Elián stay by the very
same authority under which it now

[CTRL] OT: Software ignites porn, pirate worries.htm (fwd)

2000-04-13 Thread MICHAEL SPITZER

[Here are two good articles from the Wall Street Journal
regarding pirated MP3 music available over the net versus
copyright controversy. --MS]

March 15, 2000

Program for Sharing MP3 Files Has Been Pulled From AOL Site

By a WALL STREET JOURNAL Staff Reporter

SAN FRANCISCO -- A new program that would have allowed Internet
users to freely share MP3 music files has been pulled from the
America Online Inc.-owned Web site where it was announced
Tuesday, putting the product's future in jeopardy.

The program, Gnutella, mimicked the working of Napster, an
Internet service that regularly makes available hundreds of
thousands of pirated MP3 songs. Gnutella had been developed in
recent months by the team of software programmers that wrote
Winamp, a popular MP3 player bought by AOL, Dulles, Va., last
year.

Gnutella was announced on the Web site for Nullsoft, the
AOL-owned, San Francisco company behind Winamp, with the
announcement making frequent references to AOL. But that posed a
public-relations problem for AOL, which is in the process of
merging with Time Warner Inc., the entertainment company that
gets much of its profits from records and that likely will suffer
from the continuing spread of MP3s.

A Nullsoft spokeswoman said the pages announcing the project had
been taken down because the software had been an "unauthorized
free-lance project" of the Winamp team. She declined to comment
on whether AOL-Time Warner relationship played any role in the
decision.

Programmers responsible for Gnutella didn't return calls seeking
comment.

March 27, 2000

---Wall Street Journal Maverick Programmers Prepare To Unleash
Anarchy on the Web

IF YOU THINK the Internet is an untamed frontier now, just wait.

A new technology sweeping through cyberspace promises to unleash
an entirely new wave of anarchy onto the Web, making it
impossible for anyone to protect intellectual property online or
shut down a rogue Web service.

The early warning came March 14 from a tiny computer program
called Gnutella. Created by renegade programmers at a unit of
America Online, Gnutella lets people share computer files --
mainly music -- over the Net.

AOL yanked the Gnutella Web site within a day, but it was too
late. Gnutella is humming with hundreds of people swapping Pink
Floyd cuts, and no one can stop them.

The technology that makes Gnutella thrive is popping up all over
the Net, and it goes way beyond just music. Known as a
"distributed" or "peer-to-peer" approach, it's pretty much the
opposite of the way the World Wide Web works. On the Web, people
get information from central repositories, or servers. Shutting
down a server cripples a Web site, as demonstrated in last
month's hacker attacks.

ON A DISTRIBUTED system there is no central brain to attack. So
there's almost no way to turn it off short of finding and
unplugging every single machine connected to it. Shutting down
one of these networks would be like trying to stop every phone
conversation on the planet.

"This will make censorship impossible," says Ian Clarke, a young
programmer in London with grand plans for peer-to-peer
technology. For the past 18 months, he and a handful of
collaborators have spent their spare time creating a peer-to-peer
alternative to the Web. They call their system FreeNet, and
they're getting ready to unleash their prototype in a matter of
days.

FreeNet abandons the concept of the Web "site." Anyone would be
able to make their computer a node on FreeNet by installing a
piece of software.

Information posted on FreeNet would be automatically replicated
and stored on multiple member nodes. If someone wanted to search
for something -- an academic paper, say, or a photograph -- the
request would move from one computer to the next until it
encountered and accessed the desired information. The approach
would foil tracking efforts and make it nearly impossible for
someone to remove information from the network.

Mr. Clarke thinks those capabilities add up to a bold new age
for the Internet. He envisions FreeNet as a way for political
dissidents to publish their views without fear of being found
out. Read his fiery manifesto at http://freenet.sourceforge.net.
But he admits there's a dark side, too. If FreeNet works as
advertised, it could easily be adapted for unsavory purposes,
such as distributing child pornography. "This system is, in a
sense, above the law," he says.

FreeNet may be new, but the concept of distributed networks has a
long history. The Internet itself was constructed as a
distributed network. Look deep inside the Net and you'll find
tiny packets of digital information finding their way from one
computer to the next, largely without any central control. But
then the user-friendly Web came along and created a new layer on
top of the Net, centered around the servers that host Web sites.
In a sense, FreeNet and Gnutella are a return to the Net's roots.

THESE FLEDGLING networks are

Japan Zero-Interest-Rate Policy at End?

Speculation causes yen to rise again.

Masaru Hayami, Bank of Japan governor, on Wednesday indicated that the
country's near zero-rate interest policy might end before the end of the
year. His comments at a regular monthly press conference caused a brief surge
in the yen against the dollar and euro.

An end to the BoJ's policy of near-zero interest rates towards the end of the
year has been widely predicted, but this was the first time Mr Hayami had
given a hint of its possible timing. His statement was given additional
weight because it followed a significantly more upbeat assessment of the
Japanese economy by the BoJ. The yen jumped from ¥106.9 against the dollar at
the end of Tokyo trading on Tuesday to ¥105.4 at Wednesday's close.

"The market would not be incorrect in interpreting an end to the zero-rate
policy before the year end," said Mr Hayami. "We cannot continue the
zero-rate interest policy forever. It is only natural to rectify the abnormal
policy of having zero interest rates."

An end to the near zero-rate policy would not mean a tightening of monetary
policy, according to Mr Hayami. A 25 basis point increase in the overnight
call rate had already been priced into the market, said Tetsufumi Yamakawa,
chief economist at Goldman Sachs in Tokyo. It did not mean the more important
official discount rate would have to be increased from its current 0.5 per
cent.

Analysts said Mr Hayami might have made his comments to test the market's
reaction to an eventual tightening in monetary policy. Nevertheless, they
expressed surprise at the timing of his statement. The Japanese government
had been lobbying for a statement expressing concern about the yen's strength
after Saturday's gathering in Washington of finance ministers from the Group
of Seven nations.

Mr Hayami's comments had the effect of boosting the yen's value. A sharp
appreciation of the Japanese currency could stifle the economy's stuttering
recovery.

America's Enemies Unite

Israel Welcomes Chinese President

Hey China! Have we got an arms deal for you!

JERUSALEM (AP) -- Cementing ties forged in secret nearly two decades ago,
Chinese President Jiang Zemin is touring Israel on a historic visit
overshadowed only by U.S. pressure to cancel a lucrative Israeli-Chinese arms
deal.

The high-profile recognition of Israel by one of the world's major powers has
Israel caught between its strongest ally and a powerful new friend.

Israel Prime Minister Ehud Barak welcomed Jiang on Wednesday, less than 24
hours after meeting President Clinton at the White House. Clinton urged the
Israeli leader to cancel the planned sale of a sophisticated airborne
surveillance system to China.

Clinton expressed deep displeasure and warned that the deal, potentially
worth $2 billion, could undermine Israel's standing in the United States,
said an Israeli official who attended Tuesday's meeting.

However, Israeli Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh said Israel was
committed to selling at least one surveillance plane to China, which
reportedly has the option to order three to seven more. Israeli officials
have suggested that after the first plane is delivered, the deal could be
frozen indefinitely to appease the United States.

Sneh scoffed at U.S. complaints that the sale could upset the military
balance in Asia and pose a threat to Taiwan, a U.S. ally.

Israel's arms sales to China date back to secret deals in the early 1980s,
well before the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1992.

Jiang, who is on a six-day trip, is the first Chinese president to visit
Israel.

At a reception hosted by Israeli President Ezer Weizman, Jiang said it was
important to ''strengthen the historical friendship between us ... and to
promote friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields
between the two countries.''

Jiang is particularly interested in Israeli agricultural technology and will
tour farms in southern Israel. He was to visit Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust
memorial and parliament and meet Barak later today.

A planned visit to Israel Aircraft Industries, which is outfitting a Soviet
transport plane with the new surveillance system, has reportedly been
canceled to avoid drawing more attention to the deal.

Barak faces a difficult dilemma over the sale.

He needs Clinton's goodwill at a critical stage in the peace talks with the
Palestinians and for a planned Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, due by July.

But with unemployment at a high, Barak also has to protect Israel's defense
industry, and China has emerged as a major client.

Jiang said Wednesday that with the end of the Cold War, superpowers no longer
controlled world affairs -- a veiled admonishment to the United States to
stay out of the deal.

Closed to Debate by George Szamuely
New York Press - 4/11/00

Our brain-dead political establishment is about to put up the fight of its life to
make sure that October’s presidential debates will be as boring and as
uninformative as possible. No one but the mediocre nominees of the two
major parties will be allowed to take part. The last thing our rulers want is to
give voters a chance to choose among the available alternatives.

In January the grandly named Commission on Presidential Debates
announced that no candidate will take part in the debates unless he has,
first, a mathematical chance of securing an electoral college majority, and
second, that he can demonstrate at least 15 percent support in five national
polls one week before the debates. The polls would be conducted by five
selected organizations: ABC/Washington Post; CBS/New York Times;
NBC/Wall Street Journal; CNN/USA Today/Gallup; and Fox News/Opinion
Dynamics.

Despite its blue-ribbon-sounding name, the CPD–invariably preceded by the
ingratiating adjective "bipartisan"–has no official standing whatsoever. The
CPD chairs are Frank J. Fahrenkopf Jr., former chairman of the Republican
Party and prominent gambling industry lobbyist, and Paul G. Kirk Jr., a
former chairman of the Democratic Party and also a prominent lobbyist. The
commission is divided equally between Republicans and Democrats. No
independents have ever been invited to join, even though the Reform Party
won 19 percent of the vote in 1992 and receives federal funds.

If you want to stage a debate you have to cough up $550,000. This money
goes directly to the CPD. Debates all have corporate sponsors. Soft money
contributions to political parties have to be reported to the FEC; debate
donations do not. Debates provide corporate CEOs with an excellent
opportunity to rub shoulders with presidential candidates and media
bigshots. Sponsors of the 1996 debates included Ford Motor Co., J.P.
Morgan Co., Atlantic Richfield, ATT, the Sara Lee Corp., Philip Morris
and Sprint. This year the CPD asked Anheuser-Busch to sponsor all four
debates. One, held at Washington University in St. Louis on Oct. 17, will be
sponsored entirely by Anheuser-Busch. Another one, at Winston-Salem, will
be sponsored by Philip Morris.

Support for the commission comes not just from corporations. There are also
the rich foundations. One of the commission’s funders is the Century
Foundation, formerly known as the Twentieth Century Fund. It was a

In a Stunning Concession to Protesters Just Days Before the Launch of a
National Campaign, Starbucks Agrees to Offer Its Customers Fair Trade
Certified Coffee by the End of the Year

Human Rights Activists Say Thousands of Poor Farmers in the Developing
World
Will Be Guaranteed a Living Wage

Protesters Now Plan to Turn Their Attention to Other Coffee Retailers

Bowing to human rights activists¹ demands to begin guaranteeing a living
wage for small coffee farmers in the developing world, Starbucks announced
today that it has signed a contract to sell Fair Trade Certified coffee as
one of its brands in more than 2,000 cafes across the United States
starting
this fall. The announcement comes just three days before the launch of a
nationwide, grassroots campaign demanding that the giant retailer offer its
customers the choice to buy socially responsible, Fair Trade Certified
coffee.. Protests in front of Starbucks cafes had been scheduled to take
place in 30 cities across the country on Thursday, April 13.

"This represents the largest purchase of Fair Trade Certified coffee in the
United States," said Deborah James, Director of the Fair Trade Program at
Global Exchange, a San Francisco-based human rights organization that had
organized the nationwide protests. "It¹s a huge victory for farmers in the
developing world. Thousands of farming families in poor countries will see
their incomes triple with this purchase."

The company¹s sudden decision highlights the increasing power of citizens
movements to hold corporations accountable for their actions. The
announcement also underscores the growing demand for products made in
conditions that are not exploitative; coffee is the first product with an
independent certifying system that ensures against sweatshop abuses.

"This is a major step for the corporate accountability movement," said
Medea
Benjamin, Global Exchange¹s Founding Director. "Coffee farmers are some of
the most exploited workers in the world. The Fair Trade system, which
guarantees farmers a living wage for their harvest, provides a real
solution. With the extra earnings, coffee growers are able to invest in
their families¹ health care, education, and community development."

"Coffee drinkers will now have the choice of buying socially responsible,
Fair Trade coffee," Benjamin added. "But consumers should know that
Starbucks coffee without the Fair Trade seal is very likely sweatshop
coffee."

The Fair Trade system guarantees a minimum price for small farmers¹ harvest
and encourages organic and sustainable cultivation methods that are safer
for communities. Fair Trade farmers are provided badly needed credit and
assured a minimum of $1.26 per pound. In comparison, the world price
usually
hovers around $1 per pound, but most farmers earn less than 50 cents per
pound since they are forced to sell to exploitative middlemen.

"We're happy that Fair Trade Certified coffee is finally becoming available
in the United States," said Jorge Cueves, a manager of a Fair Trade
cooperative in Oaxaca, Mexico. "It will mean so much for our communities
and
our families. A fair price means the difference between poverty and
success."

Fair Trade promoters say they will now turn their attention to companies
that have not committed to offering their consumers socially responsible
coffee, including Folgers, Maxwell House, Peets, Diedrich Coffee, Tully¹s,
Barnies, Seattle¹s Best, and Caribou.###

Dear Fair Trade Activists,

BEFORE THEY EVEN GOT WHAT WAS COMING TO THEM, WE DID IT!
This is truly a victory for farmers and for the corporate
accountability/Fair Trade movements. They even admitted that they wouldn¹t
have done it without the pressure they were feeling from activists!!

The victory here is really twofold. First and foremost it is a victory for
the farmers, whose incomes will triple due to this large purchase. They
are
who we are really accountable to. It is also a huge victory for the
corporate accountability movement; citizens are making it clear that we
have
the power to make corporations pay a living wage to workers. There is no
doubt to anyone, including Starbucks, that this victory for Fair Trade is
happening because of the threat that you as activists pose. They recognize
your power, and you won! You deserve to be congratulated for your vision
and commitment to Fair Trade!

Our vision, as we stated to them, is

[CTRL] FLORIDA DEATH ROW NEWS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - FLORIDA DEATH ROW

WHERE IS THE MEDIA FOR THESE CHILDREN IN NEED?

APRIL 9, 2000

Americans are quick to jump on the band wagon in defense and protection
of a sweet-faced child, as illustrated by the recent media attention
focusing on young Elian Gonzalez and his imposed four month separation
from his father. But, where are the media when dozens of equally
sweet-faced children are being separated from their fathers by a
regulation of American origin? A rule which those in power deem
necessary for security reasons, but which has no foundation in fact, and
little support apart from the politicians who would impose it.

Where is the media to report on this injustice and unfairness? Where
are the crowds of angry citizens demanding that the right thing be done
by these children?

Society assumes that all who are convicted and sentenced to death are
guilty of the crimes they are accused of. And, by association, their
families, too must be somehow deserving of punishment and separation as
well.

Studies prove that one in seven condemned to die are eventually proven
innocent. The past twenty-four years has seen eighty-five released from
death rows across the country, and with increasing awareness, this
number will quickly escalate into the hundreds.

With this formula in effect, more than fifty innocent men are wrongly
being deprived of their freedom in the state of Florida, and are caged
as if animals on death row. To make this horrendous situation even
worse, the state now wishes to cut off contact with family members,
further isolating them and layering even more injustice upon that which
has already befallen these victims of circumstance. Where are the
people to rally for these poor souls, and to demand justice be done by
them?

At what point will they be punished enough in society's eyes that we
give them their fair moment in court? Must we wait so long that they
give up and attempt suicide as one did earlier this week? Till the
thought of life void of contact with family drives them to do the
executioners distasteful work for him?

Must we wait until the administration shortens the amount of time
allowed for appeals, locking the innocent men inside forever just
because the clock ran out? Do we wait while exonerative DNA evidence
mysteriously disappears from yet another file? At what point do we
acknowledge that there are victims on both sides of the prison walls?
When do we begin to care?

An innocent child cannot understand the politics involved with
separation--the rules, the political motivation. We should take
another look at such issues, but through the eyes of a child.

THE INVISIBLE FAMILIES OF FLORIDA - NOT INCLUDED IN THE RESPECT FOR FAMILY
VALUES

APRIL 8, 2000

Having a loved one on death row is extremely arduous and agonizing.
Apart from the expected loss of financial support this brings a family,
the emotional loss takes a far greater toll. Even worse than the actual
physical separation is the worry.

Death row is not a pleasant place to live, if you would call their
meager existence "living." Rather, it is a bleak warehouse for storing
the condemned; a holding pen for the disposable men and women who are
waiting on a death sentence to be carried out.

Society does not want to acknowledge this stark, cruel reality, nor do
the politicians want the truth of this brutalizing existence to come to
light where decent-minded folk might find offense. However, to those
who must endure this hell on earth, and to those who love them, this is
reality in it's harshest form--Dante's "Inferno" brought to life.

"Life" exists in a 9 x 6' cubicle which is too cold in the winter and
too hot during the long hot Florida summers. Every few days they are
allowed the luxury of an all too brief shower, and for an hour or two a
week, they are released for exercise in the "yard." However, pending
regulations will increase the length of time between showers and will
shorten the amount of exercise time allowed.

In the not too distant past, the prisoners on death row would fill the
long idle hours of the day with crafts such as drawing or knitting,
proudly sending out their works to loved ones as a way to extend a part
of themselves back into the family home. However, recent regulations
again have removed these few simple diversions from lonely, solitary
men, calling drawing pencils "security risks" and are forcing their
removal. Even normal pens and pencils are now classified as
"contraband" and have been replaced with flimsy, barely usable 3"
"security pens." Nothing else is allowed.

Dengue fever could worsen in 21st century.
By Carlos A. DeJuana

BUENOS AIRES, Apr 12 (Reuters) -- Outbreaks of dengue fever and its sometimes
deadly hemorrhagic strain will continue to increase across the Americas in
the 21st century unless governments boost their will to combat the tropical
virus, experts said.

Cases of dengue are on the rise in almost every country in North and South
America even though the disease was almost wiped out by a 1962 plan to
eradicate the mosquito that carries and spreads the virus.

But a lack of coordination between and within governments, dwindling
resources and declining awareness of the problem has led to a resurgence of
dengue in every Western Hemisphere country except for Canada, Chile, Bermuda
and Cuba--which have largely eradicated it.

Discuss this story with other people.
[Start a Conversation]
(Requires Yahoo! Messenger)

``If we continue with our present conditions, we're going to have serious
problems,'' Eric Martinez, a Cuban specialist and author on dengue, told
Reuters at the 9th International Congress on Infectious Diseases in Buenos
Aires.

Dengue fever, for which there is no vaccine, causes excruciating muscle and
joint pains, high fevers and severe headaches. Its more virulent form called
hemorrhagic dengue can cause internal bleeding and death.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the
number of cases of dengue fever in the Americas more than doubled to 741,794
in 1998 from 364,945 in 1997. Even in the US there were 90
laboratory-diagnosed cases of dengue in 1998, including one death.

Martinez said socioeconomic conditions, public health services, and
preventive and vigilance programs need to improve before authorities can
combat the mosquito and the disease.

``If these things don't occur--and presently they aren't--at the doors of the
21st century, we will have to say that the 21st century will be like no other
in terms of outbreaks and epidemics of dengue and hemorrhagic dengue,''
Martinez said.

Furthermore, global warming is increasing the geographical areas in which the
mosquito can live, he said adding, ``this is a global problem.''

Francisco Pinheiro of the Pan American Health Organization said community
participation and awareness of dengue and how to combat it was central toward
its eradication.

Argentina has recently increased its dengue awareness programmes fearing an
outbreak of the disease at home after the number of cases in neighbouring
Paraguay reached what the government there called an ``epidemic explosion.''

The Argentine government has said Paraguay has about 10,000 confirmed cases
of dengue in a country of 5 million people, with one fatality. In March,
Argentina detected 170 cases of dengue, all Paraguayans or people who had
been in the South American country.

But even a lack of coordination between different regional governments in
Argentina can allow the mosquito to prosper. While Buenos Aires, the
country's wealthiest district, is taking precautions against dengue, some of
its poorer neighboring municipalities have not.

``There's a lack of will to say we have to efficiently control the
(dengue-carrying) Aedes aegypti mosquito and dedicate the funds and, more
importantly, the human resources,'' said Alfredo Seijo, a doctor at Buenos
Aires' Muniz Hospital.

[CTRL] The Great Game

 WED APR 12 2000 12:04 P.M. G.M.T.
Albright set to plant US firmly in Central Asia's new 'Great Game'
by Matthew Lee

WASHINGTON, April 12 (AFP) - When Secretary of State Madeleine Albright arrives
in Central Asia on a three-country tour this weekend, she will be placing the
United States firmly in the middle of a new "Great Game" -- a battle for
influence in the region once waged by imperial Britain and Russia.

Though access to India, control of overland Euro-Asian trading routes,
including the fabled Silk Road, and territorial gain have been replaced as
prizes in the 21st-century version of the game, US officials believe the stakes
are just as high now as they were when Victorian Britain and Czarist Russia
waged their war of espionage and skullduggery.

Keen to be a player in the region with massive oil reserves as well as to check
the spread of drugs and Islamic terrorist groups, the United States has
dispatched three top officials to Central Asia's former Soviet states in the
past month.

Albright -- who will visit Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan after a stop
in Ukraine -- is following in the steps of CIA director George Tenet and FBI
director Louis Freeh, who met with regional officials in the region to discuss
intelligence and law enforcement issues.

Albright will bring with her a slightly different, but equally critical focus,
closing the triangle begun by Tenet and Freeh with a diplomatic mission billed
as a visit centered on regional security, democracy building and promoting rule
of law.

She will be offering about three million dollars in border enforcement aid to
each of the three nations, US officials say.

"These countries are located in an area of great challenge and we've got a
tremendous interest in helping them guard against the problems endemic to the
area," said one senior official.

The official downplayed the significance of the three trips coming so close
together but allowed that the importance of the region made it "only natural
that we would have a lot of visitors out there."

"The key is to keep this area stable and keep it from becoming infected with
the kinds of viruses coming out of, say Afghanistan," said the official who
later added Pakistan and Iran to the list of countries from which Islamic
terrorism is being exported.

After leaving Ukraine on Saturday, Albright is to travel to Astana where fierce
competition over the huge petroleum deposits on Kazakhstan's Caspian Sea coast
has long engaged US oil firms despite recurrent complaints of corruption and
other hitches in the privatization process.

"They still haven't done enough to create the right environment to keep
investment coming in instead of scaring it away," the official said, describing
the Kazakh stop as the most commercial of the three.

Central to Albright's message will be the removal of business restrictions,
particularly a cap of exports of oil by foreign companies, which has vexed US
firms, the official said.
"We would like to see that cap lifted either before or during the secretary's
trip, if not after," the official said.
From Kazakhstan, Albright will make her way to Kyrgyzstan on Sunday -- the
smallest of her three destinations and the only one where she will not stay
overnight.
The once-burgeoning new democracy there is now challenged by repressive
government measures as well as the threat of terrorism.
Washington has condemned the arrests of several opposition figures and deplored
fraud in Kyrgyzstan's February elections which US officials have termed
"disappointing."
"Kyrgyzstan was one of the leading lights in Central Asia but it has kind of
slipped off the path," the senior official said. "It is susceptible and we want
to make that point to the Kyrgyz."

Terrorism is a credible threat there. Last fall, some 1,000 Islamic rebels took
four Japanese geologists hostage for two months there before releasing them
unharmed and retreating south through Tajikistan into Afghanistan.
Washington believes those rebels have now relocated in the valleys along the
Tajik-Kyrgyz border, officials said.

Albright's last and longest stop beginning late Sunday will be Uzbekistan,
arguably the most brutal Great Game playing field after Afghanistan and the
only country on her itinerary that shares a border with that shattered state.
Terrorism fears have also run high in Uzbekistan following a series of
explosions that rocked the capital of Tashkent in February 1999, killing 16
people, and Washington is urging the Uzbeks to step up border control
cooperation with the Kyrgyz.

"They need to cooperate if they are going to combat this," the official said.
Side trips from Tashkent will take Washington's top diplomat to Samarkand,
key stop on the Silk Road, and Bukhara, made famous in part by its murderous
emir who in 1842 ordered the public executions of two British emissaries as the
Great Game got underway.

MILITARY DEVELOPMENT OF REMOTE MIND-CONTROL
TECHNOLOGY Military/intelligence interest in remote-viewing (RV) goes
back to at least the 1950s. Remote-viewing-the ability to see things far
from one's physical body-was developed during the Cold War to enable
security organisations to gain information about top-secret enemy sites in
which they had no assets. The Russians have always been more advanced
than their American counterparts in the study and development of RV and
biophysical remote mind-control technology (RMCT). This did not go
unnoticed by the CIA and the US military, who started experimenting with
biophysical RMCT in the 1960s. However, because it proved difficult to
control, the Americans concentrated instead on electronic techniques-until
quite recently. US military research into RV was implemented with Project
Scangate, and continued with many different projects including Grill Flame,
Center Lane, Sunstreak and Stargate.1

As a scientist I became fascinated by the implications of RV, for if it really
worked it totally upset the paradigm upon which our scientific model of
reality is based. The work of Dr Jessica Utts-a Professor of Statistics at
Stanford who has scientifically proven that RV phenomena exist2-was
significant in this respect for it showed that science as we know it is
crucially flawed.3 We have developed atomic energy, yet it is as if we have
less knowledge than our cave ancestors about the essential nature of
reality. The sceptics rebutted the Utts paper and have denied that any
paranormal phenomena could possibly exist.4 This might be more
comfortable for the scientific community, but RMCT is being used more
and more by the military/intelligence community.

To mask this, the US military's position on RV was stated by CIA
spokesperson David Christian, who accepted that no further official US
research into RV was warranted: "We think the intelligence community
shouldn't pursue research on this and that it is best left to the private
sector..."5

Is there a campaign of disinformation to cover up their continued and
accelerated study of the subject? Could programmes such as The Real X-
Files (shown on Channel 4, UK)-created by Jim Schnabel, an alleged CIA
operative-be designed to act as red herrings, to mask the US security
organisation's true intent? If so, wouldn't the public's interest in this area
mean that the privately-run US RV organisations (all headed by 'retired' US
security officers), to which the public could turn for training, would have a
large number of applicants? This would be useful if the US intelligence
community were trawling for undiscovered psi-able people to recruit for a
burgeoning RMCT military programme.6

THE SCIENTIFIC BASIS OF REMOTE-VIEWING This led me to ask
whether there could be a scientific basis to RV and RMCT. As a proponent
of RV, I knew that it worked.

Joe McMoneagle, a retired US Army intelligence officer-who claims to
have left Stargate in 1984 with a Legion of Merit award for providing
information on 150 targets that was unavailable from other sources-used
RV to go into the mind of Shaw Taylor, to see through his eyes, in an
experiment carried out on The Paranormal World of Paul McKenna (ITV,
UK). This method of using RV to enter the brains of other people is called
remote sensing (RS). Biophysical RMCT can be considered to have the
explanation for how ESP and telepathy work.

I have had many people ask me whether there is information available on
the scientific basis of RV. Having looked through the Internet at the web
sites purporting to be leaders in RV technology, I came to the conclusion
that either the knowledge base of Western experts was feeble, or most of
the real information was classified. Most of the leading research done in
the US on brain

Kosovo refugees spurned by nations worldwide
UN administrator Bernard Kouchner denounces the forced deportation of thousands
of Albanians by Western governments
By Stephen Castle in Brussels
13 April 2000

Governments are deporting tens of thousands of ethnic Albanians to Kosovo as
the surge of generosity shown by the world in response to Slobodan Milosevic's
repression of the province evaporates.

The deportations were denounced yesterday by Kosovo's UN administrator, Bernard
Kouchner. "We don't want them to come back at the same time," Mr Kouchner said.
"Some of the children are in school in these host countries. What about the
forced returns?"

Of nearly 96,000 Kosovars officially sent to the West by the UN last year,
almost 90 per cent have returned of their own accord. Western governments are
now making efforts to get rid of the remainder. Some countries are sending back
more than they officially took in, filling planes with thousands of others who
made their own way out of Kosovo. International officials warn the abrupt
influx could seriously destabilise the fragile peace in Kosovo. Germany, for
example, has started deporting dozens of convicted criminals.

Under the United Nations' Humanitarian Evacuation Programme, a total of 95,927
people were rescued from Kosovo – rather fewer than the 134,482 that the UNHCR
says have gone back.

The two biggest batches of returns so far were from Germany, which took in
14,689 last year but has sent back 25,109, and Switzerland which admitted 1,687
but has sent back 19,669.

The discrepancy arises because many Kosovars arrived at borders under their own
steam, or had already been in the West before last year's fighting. But as one
aid worker put it bluntly: "The policy of the governments towards refugees is
getting tougher; they have no shame any more."

David Boratav, Kosovo officer for the European Council on Refugees and Exiles,
argues that the most significant threat is not of mass forcible returns but of
a gradual erosion of conditions in the host countries.

He said: "A lot of people are going to be put under pressure because of the
cutting of benefits for temporary protected persons or the downgrading of their
status – for example, in Germany, from the category of 'war refugee' to
'toleratedperson'.

"It is likely that most states are going to find ways of downgrading the status
of refugees to the level that people will conclude that there is no option for
them but to return."

The right of all those who fled Kosovo to apply for political asylum in the
West is being undermined, Mr Boratav argues. "It is unacceptable, at the
moment, for people to be returned to Kosovo in a forcible way."

What worries pressure groups is that the most vulnerable people will be
browbeaten into returning. Several categories could be at physical or
psychological risk, including those in mixed marriages, those who deserted from
the Kosovo Liberation Army or those who disobeyed its injunctions. Victims of
rape or sexual abuse may be particularly unwilling to return to the scene of
the offence.

Jacques Franquin, spokes-man for the UNHCR, said: "We are not going to argue
with the fact that Kosovars are returned by host countries. That was part of
the deal. But we do want governments to consider cases on humanitarian
grounds."

Poverty, homelessness and the London Mayoral elections
By Keith Lee
13 April 2000

Back to screen version

It has become a common feature of elections that, despite all the airtime and
newspaper coverage devoted to various candidates, the concerns of working
people are barely addressed. If by chance they receive a mention, it is only in
the most distorted way—witness how worries over increasing social dislocation
have become channelled into demands for draconian law-and-order measures.

The campaign for the May election of a London mayor and 24 members of the new
Greater London Assembly is no exception. The mayoral contest has generated more
media coverage than most elections, due to the crisis for the government of
Tony Blair following the decision of former Labour MP Ken Livingstone to stand
as an independent candidate. But one could be forgiven for thinking that the
only constituency that really matters is the capital's corporate executives and
stockbrokers.

London is a city of two halves. The City of London (home to the stock exchange
and the headquarters of major banks, insurance companies and pension funds) is
the richest wealth-generating region in Europe, with a gross domestic product
23 percent above the national average. As the number of millionaires and high-
flying executives has increased, fuelled by rising share prices, so have
property prices. In nearby Canary Wharf, Margaret Thatcher's monument to
"poplar capitalism", even a parking space can cost upwards of £50,000.

Great wealth exists alongside dire poverty. The "new" wealth referred to so
admiringly in the media and political circles is confined to an extremely
narrow layer. The capital is home to 13 of the 20 most deprived areas in the
UK. Some 46 percent of London's unemployed have been jobless for more than a
year—10 percent above the national average. Infant mortality is higher in the
capital than the rest of the country.

Such differences are found in all major cities. They express the fact that over
the last two decades, successive governments have presided over a significant
redistribution of wealth away from working people to the rich.

Opinion polls conducted during the mayoral contest have revealed that most
Londoners consider the issues of poverty and homelessness to be the most
important. Yet these have received scant attention.

It is estimated that some 50,000 young people are homeless in London, over 81
percent of these being forced out of the family home through poverty, abuse or
family breakdown. At Centrepoint homeless refuge, half the new homeless were 16
to 17 years old and 61 percent were female. Jobless 16-17 year olds are not
entitled to any state benefits. The availability of social housing has been
drastically reduced through a combination of the previous Conservative
government's "right to buy" legislation and cuts in Local Authority house
building programmes.

Whilst the situation is particularly extreme amongst the young single
homeless—who are not regarded as a priority and do not benefit from homeless
legislation—it is encompassing broader sections of the population. The lack of
affordable and decent housing in London is now so acute that employers complain
they are unable to find the workforce necessary to run public transport, clean
offices and teach in schools.

Health campaigners estimate that there are around 5,000 nursing vacancies in
the capital. A recent study by the government's Teacher Training Agency
reported that more than 40 percent of London's teachers are planning to leave
the capital in the next five years because of high house prices. Professor
Alistair Ross, co-director of the research project, said, "if you are on
£22,000 a year you face the choice of living in rented accommodation for the
rest of your life or moving outside the capital where you can actually buy
somewhere to live.” So sensitive was the report that the agency refused to
release copies to the press in advance of its publication.

The disparity between the small pay packets of many London workers and the high
cost of living in the capital is so great that in order to deal with the labour
shortage the Blair government is considering offering interest-free loans to
some public sector workers to enable them to buy a house.

The government claims that the main vehicle for regenerating the
city—supposedly bringing increased living standards to all—will be a newly
created London Development Agency (LDA). Its remit is to compete for both
international and intra-regional investment. Labour's Green Paper outlined that
the LDA "will play a key role in co-ordinating a London wide approach to
economic development regeneration. The LDA will work closely with the voluntary
and public sector organisations alongside the private sector.”

Labour holds this up as representing a new consensus between the private and
public sectors. In reality, there is nothing new to this

The Wired Word
By Jonathan Yardley

With regard to the online publication of books, a subject addressed rather
gingerly in this space several weeks ago, there is more to be said; indeed,
there is so much more to be said that this bids fair to be the new millennium's
equivalent of the previous one's debate over public funding of the arts, a
question I managed to beat into the deadest of dead horses. For the moment,
though, there is this to be said about online publishing: It seems certain to
give whole new universes--cyber-universes, if you will--of meaning to the
ancient practice of vanity publication.

That thought is provoked by an e-mail from a reader somewhere out there in the
cyber-void. Her friendly and enthusiastic message reads as follows:

"I know electronic authors who report that, if it were not for the Internet,
they would not be able to publish their works. This is due to the fact that
first-time authors have a difficult time finding traditional publishers who
will accept and print their work. These authors have found a way to bypass
their competition--already established/published authors. We are indeed living
in a wondrous time . . . maybe I'll write my own memoirs!"

What my correspondent is saying--and she is absolutely right--is that in the
new world of the Internet, anyone can write and publish a book. People who
fancy themselves to be writers but are turned away by established trade or
university presses can now skip the vanity industry and go directly to press.
No longer will it be necessary for those desperate to get their words into
print to undergo the expensive--and in some instances humiliating--process of
paying a vanity press to publish those words, usually in ugly volumes that
bookstores decline to stock and that almost never come to the attention of
potential readers.

Now a would-be author needs only the minimal funds necessary to set up a Web
site, the time to type or scan the manuscript into that site, and the energy to
bring it to the attention of readers. What that person will then have is not a
book in the traditional sense--printed in ink on paper, bound in cloth and
glued or sewn at the spine--but if one believes, as many do, that a book is a
collection of words rather than a physical object, then that person will most
certainly have written, and published, a book.

The vanity publishers must be scared to death. Why should anyone pay them for
the shoddy products they print and fail to distribute when printing and
distribution are now available, to all intents and purposes, for free? If the
Internet puts them out of business, God bless the Internet. But the established
publishers are shaking in their boots, too, as numerous reports from the
industry make plain. Not merely do trade and university publishers face the
possibility of untold lost revenues from books that authors may now decide to
self-publish on the Internet, but they may lose as well their traditional role
as gatekeepers of literature.

Radical egalitarians doubtless find that exhilarating: equal-opportunity book
publishing, open to all, no questions asked. The old unpublished-author's
complaint--Why don't good books get published anymore?--is passe. Every book
will get published now, so long as its author has the will and the way.
Liberation is at hand for all those much-rejected manuscripts locked away in
attics and basements or lurking in the tight confines of floppy disks.

But if you think this is a good thing, think again. In publishing as in just
about everything else, untrammeled democracy is a mixed blessing. In making
publication available to all, the Internet bypasses the editorial process that
attempts to separate the wheat from the dross, the publishable from the
unpublishable. It operates on the assumption that all written words are equally
worthy, or, if you prefer, equally worthless. It has no standards, because none
are required. No risks are taken, no gambles are made, by contrast with real-
world publishing in which every new book--like every new product of any kind--
entails risk and in which, therefore, informed judgments must be made about
what (a) deserves to be published and (b) stands a chance of turning a profit.

The egalitarianism of the Internet is appealing, but it rests on an untenable
assumption: not merely that all of us are created equal, but that all of us are
equally meritorious and interesting. Thus we have news Web sites in which the
opinions of readers are solicited ("What's Your View?") and displayed in a
format that gives equal weight to the informed and the ignorant; at last count
Washingtonpost.com had registered more than (!) 2,600 "opinions" about gay
rights in Vermont. Thus, too, we have Amazon.com, which invites customers to be
book reviewers, a phenomenon that was given its due last year by Tracy Lee
Simmons in the Weekly Standard:

"Amazon.com has . . . provided

SARTRE, DE BEAUVOIR GET THEIR OWN PARIS SQUARE
By Marilyn Augu
st. Associated Press
April 12, 2000

PARIS -- Jean-Paul Sartre, the thundering voice of France's postwar
intelligentsia, is back where he'd like to be: Stirring controversy in the
bookstalls of Paris.

Revered as a versatile man of letters and reviled as a misguided political
activist, Sartre is being remembered as a potent cocktail of literary talent,
political blunders and philosophical thought.

In recent weeks, the existentialist philosopher's controversial legacy has been
dissected in a flurry of new books and articles in the major French media.

On Tuesday, Mayor Jean Tiberi unveiled a plaque renaming the St.-Germain-des-
Pres square on the Left Bank for Sartre and his lifelong companion, feminist
Simone de Beauvoir. Despite her devotion to Sartre, Beauvoir also was known as
novelist Nelson Algren's lover.

For Jean-Marie Rouart, member of the prestigious Academie Francaise, Sartre is
the stuff from which the 20th Century was made.

"You can criticize Sartre. You can make a list of his mistakes. You can love
him or hate him," Rouart wrote in the daily Le Figaro. "The only thing you
can't do is ignore his importance."

Sartre's place in the world of French letters can't be ignored but it has been
conspicuously empty since the author of "Nausea" and "Being and Nothingness"
died April 15, 1980. His funeral was a national event.

Left Bank Paris, notably St.-Germain-des-Pres, where Sartre and de Beauvoir,
who died in 1986, shared an apartment for years, entertaining friends and
hammering out political theories, no longer exists as they knew it.

Today their favorite haunts are overrun with rich tourists and fashion hounds.
Nonetheless, this is where Paris authorities decided to honor Sartre, renaming
it Place Sartre-Beauvoir, rather than a street near the National Library.

"This intersection is where two great minds and two exceptional destinies met,"
Tiberi said. "It's where they cemented their union by reading each other's
manuscripts penned the night before."

Sylvie Lebon de Beauvoir, de Beauvoir's adopted daughter, said she had lobbied
for years to have the square renamed.

"They rejected all honors and titles during their lifetimes, but I think they'd
be pleased to have such a special part of Paris named for them," she said.
Despite all the media fuss, Sartre has all but disappeared from French high
school curricula.

"`Nausea' has fallen into oblivion," said teacher Helene Giansetto.

THE UNCENSORED GORDON KAHL STORY

In 1968, Tax Protestor Gordon Kahl stopped filing IRS 1040 Income Tax
Returns. For 9 years thereafter, the IRS ignored him, but in 1977 after
Gordon Kahl spoke on an evening radio talk show regarding the illicitness of
the income tax, some 250 phone calls would come into the radio station over
the next two days; either supporting Kahl in some aspect, or pledging never
to
file another tax return.

And with that, the IRS came down on Kahl like a ton of bricks. They quickly
assembled a case against him and two weeks later threw a criminal
prosecution against him for violating Title 26, Section 7203 ["Willful
Failure
to File"]. Gordon Kahl was a low-income farmer not even meeting minimal
statutory standards for threshold income levels achieved before being
required to file 1040s, but that was not about to stop the IRS, who is good
at
changing the facts by creating facts.

Convicted and incarcerated, when out of Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary
on parole, Kahl left the Texas judicial district he was confined to by
claiming that some aspect of the Restriction Orders was defective. He soon
moved to North Dakota -- and there, he met his fate. A criminal Summons
issued from a Federal Court in Midland, Texas was served on Gordon Kahl on
August 8, 1980, charging him with a misdemeansor. Gordon Kahl responded by
informing the Court that he would not be appearing, and the matter was
allowed to be deferred until March 31, 1982, when the Justice Department
obtained a Federal Arrest Warrant citing his parole violation.

Then, that Warrant was held up again until July 26, 1982, some 16 months
later, when it was sent to the U.S. Marshals Office in Fargo, North Dakota
on February 13, 1983. The United States Marshals and the Federal Court in
Texas knew of his whereabouts in North Dakota at all times. After a two and
one half year delay in the case, the fact that there was a "problem"
controlling the prosecution of the case is self-evident.

If that chronology had been published in the New York Times in the
context of discussing some other unfortunate incident that had happened,
it would be referred to, very defensively of the Government of course, as
mere "bureaucratic bungling," in an attempt to discredit the obvious
interposition of the "Lateness of the Hour" operating against the Government
to bar the legitimacy of their management of the case.

Once again Gordon Kahl had attracted the attention of the United States

Government. With the personality known as Ronald Reagan acquiescing
indifferently as President, and with William French Smith sitting as
Attorney
General, the word came down the pipeline to GET RID OF GORDON KAHL, and the
stage was set for the kind of confrontation the Feds wanted.

A violent attack was planned against Gordon Kahl at his farmhouse, and
it was going to be well publicized. The attack would be in the form of a
roadblock, it would be in the evening hours, and it would occur in a
remote rural area. The timing of the attack in February of 1983 was selected
to coincide with the trials of other related criminal prosecutions then
going
on that would be favorably tipped towards the Government, as the Juries
were exposed to what would be surfacing visibly on the news as the Gordon
Kahl "incident."

From his farm in Heaton, North Dakota, both Gordon Kahl, along with his
neighbors, and the Chief of Police of Medina, North Dakota, Darrell
Graff, all had received several advanced notices that the United States
Marshals were planning a very unpleasant reception for Gordon Kahl, and in
the case of Darrell

French Anti-Racism Group
Sues Yahoo For Hosting Auctions of Nazi-Related Items7:45 p.m. ET (2345 GMT) April 11, 2000

By Jason
  Straziuso
PARIS — A French anti-racism group filed a lawsuit against Yahoo! on Tuesday,
claiming the Internet giant hosts illegal auctions of Nazi-related
paraphernalia.

The International League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism, known by its
French initials LICRA, is suing Yahoo! for having Nazi-related items on auction
Web sites that can be accessed in France.
France has strict laws against selling or displaying anything that incites
racism. Sales of Nazi artifacts are against the law.
"In the United States (these auctions) might not be illegal, but as soon as
you cross the French border, it's absolutely illegal," said Marc Knobel, a
researcher for LICRA.
A spokeswoman for Yahoo! said the company does not comment on pending
litigation. The lawsuit is due to be heard by a Paris court on May 15.
LICRA is asking Yahoo! to make all such auctions inaccessible to Web surfers
in France and its territories like Martinique and French Guyana, Knobel said. It
has asked a French judge to fine the California-based company $96,000 for each
day it does not comply.
While no such items are for sale on Yahoo!'s French site, Knobel said there
are currently over 1,000 Nazi-related items, including pictures, coins and
flags, on sale at an auction site that is accessible in France.
Knobel said LICRA may consider similar lawsuits in other countries where
Nazi-related items are banned.
Last September, Yahoo! was commended in front of a U.S. Senate Judiciary
Committee for combatting racism on the Internet by banishing more than 70 sites
from its network whose hosts were hate groups.
Comment:
I'm curious - if i wrote to this so-called
anti-hate group, and complained that i found the Internet sale and promotion of
an instrument of the most barbaric and cruel torcher, in verity an instrumnt of
death - hateful and offensive, i wonder if they'd react in the same
manner?
Oh! that instrument of torcher? called the
Catholic "crucifix".
What are my chances of positive action by this
self-appointed anti-hate hate group? What are they really on
about?

Urban patrols offer unique training
http://www.jacksonvilledailynews.com/local/
Town's distractions provide challenges unavailable on base

BY ERIC STEINKOPFF DAILY NEWS STAFF

SWANSBORO -- What appeared to be a typical morning meeting
of small-town officials was held Tuesday. At closer examination,
though, the guests turned out to be some of America's ambassadors in
green.

The meeting, between Marine Corps commanders and Swansboro
town officials, was part of the daily process of an urban training
exercise in Swansboro by ground elements of the 26th Marine
Expeditionary Unit.

"It's great and it doesn't compare to the other training we have this
week," said Maj. Jim Christmas, operations officer with 2nd
Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment. "This really makes our week a whole
package."

As the Marines and sailors of the 26th MEU rotate small groups of
around 100 service members through each of their standard training
areas, each group gets the opportunity to conduct a patrol against the
backdrop of the "Friendly City By The Sea."

"I'll be here all week as liaison between the units to add continuity to
their training," said Capt. Brynn Schreiner, forward area controller.
"(Monday) we had Marines from India Battery and (Tuesday) we
have Marines from Echo Company. This town is just one stop in our
week of training. We have been to the range on base and the Military
Operations in Urban Terrain facility at Camp Lejeune. The MOUT
facility is a great training area, but out here we have all the
distractions: mailmen, buses, questions from media, civilians staring,
etc."

To start the meeting, Lt. Col. Larry Nicholson, the commander of 2nd
Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment -- the landing team for the 26th MEU
-- introduced the first speaker, who addressed Rich Price, the
Swansboro town manager and H.C. Pugliese, the Swansboro police
chief, by giving them the latest on the weather conditions and an
explanation of the pretend countrymen that his troops might
encounter.

"I brief all the patrols before they go out," said Staff Sgt. William
Mackes, intelligence chief.

Capt. Walter Finney, the commander of India Battery, then reported
the previous day's developments.

"We have already set up the command operations center, security, a
simulated traffic check point and taught classes to our Marines,"
Finney said. "We shut down for a three-hour period last night when
traffic was heaviest, and last night we had five role-player vehicles
come through our check point."

In an effort to teach the Marines to observe their surroundings and
report things of interest to their commanders, the patrols used their
ingenuity.

"The patrols pick out things to report on," said Finney. "They chose to
map out all the locations of the dogs in the neighborhood. The town
was extremely friendly and waved to us as the Marines went passed,"
Finney said.

"Were there any loose dogs that I should track down?" joked
Pugliese, which got an uproar from the observers.

Swansboro's top cop had his own input into the training.

"The transition went real smooth," Pugliese said. "Today, we're asking
the Marines to secure from 1730 to 2000 to allow for traffic and also
in the early afternoon for the school buses. Please be careful on Front
Street; it's our tourist area."

Outside, amid the sounds of the songbirds chirping and the call of an
occasional goose flying overhead, the smell of fresh flowers was
carried on the gentle breeze.

"Yesterday we had 119 Marines training here and today we expect
138," Schreiner said. "These are the staff NCOs and officers; the
leaders and the planners."

As the late-morning sun was shining off the nearby White Oak River
and the Intracoastal Waterway, a patrol of seven Marines moved
slowly and cautiously up the gentle slope of historic Church Street.

But the Marines were on duty and could not fully appreciate the
beauty of their environment.

"We follow along behind the basic rifleman and take out the tanks and
bunkers with this SMAW," said Lance Cpl. Sammy Aaron, carrying a
shoulder-fired multipurpose assault weapon. "Of course, this isn't
loaded."

A young sergeant was framed by the bright contrast of the blooming
azaleas, along the quiet town, which retains its charm as a historic little
fishing village.

"We study demolition techniques as well as how to breach minefields
and obstacles," said Sgt. Paul Reno, section leader from Weapons
Platoon, Echo Company. "We have one machine gun squad and one
assault squad with each infantry platoon. For this training scenario, we
don't carry live ammunition."

April 19, 1775
This Month in American Revolution History

Lexington, Massachusetts: The Battles of Lexington Concord,
Massachusetts were perhaps the first serious evidence that the
Colonials were willing to commit to a war which would rid them of
British Domination. Word of the advance of British forces coming
from Boston was spread on the evening of April 18, 1775 during the
well-known "Ride of Paul Revere" . The early morning of April 19,
1775 found a swelling rank of townspeople joining the 130 elite
"minutemen" waiting on the Village green in Lexington with Captain
John Parker to face Gage's troops. By daybreak, only about seventy
of the assembled minutemen bore arms, and they formed into two
lines to face the British about 100 yards away on the road to
Concord. Against an opposition outnumbering the Colonials ten to
one, Parker realized that opposition was foolhardy, but he declared
he would shoot any man who ran. The Colonials stood their ground.

The British Major John Pitcairn rode forward and ordered the rebels
to disperse. Realizing the futility of their position, the patriots began to
do so, but refused to surrender their arms. Suddenly one shot rang
out, who fired it will never be known. A British officer ordered his
troops to fire. Their volley flew over the minutemen's heads. Pitcairn
shouted an order to cease fire, but his overexcited troops let loose
another volley and charged the fleeing minutemen. With great difficulty
the British officers regained control over their troops. Eight dead
patriots lay on Lexington Green; ten wounded escaped. The Battle of
Lexington is over.

Concord, Massachusetts: Rejoined by Smith's detachment, the British
forces proceeded toward Concord, as the news of their march
spread through eastern Massachusetts by means of a system of
couriers, church bells, and drums. By the time Dr. Samuel Prescott
reached Concord with news of the British approach, the alarm bell
had summoned the minutemen to arms. The British advanced on
Concord, attempting to disperse the minutemen who were stationed
on a ridge above the roadway. The patriots fell back to a second
ridge, and reassembled on Punkatasset Hill, a 200 foot elevation
north of the Concord River. There they awaited reinforcements as the
British entered the town. After sending a detachment to Col. James
Barrett's house to look for armaments, and stationing troops to guard
the North Bridge, the British officers took refreshment in the local
taverns. Meanwhile, the minutemen descended to a ridge nearer the
North Bridge as reinforcements to their numbers arrived from nearby
villages. Seeing that the British had set fire to the courthouse and a
blacksmith shop, Barrett's adjutant, Joseph Hosmer questioned
whether the patriots intend to let their town be burned. They decided
to come to the town's defense, and Barrett gave the famous order to
advance but to hold fire unless fired upon.

Led by Barrett, Major John Buttrick, and Lt. Col. John Robinson, the
minutemen advanced, while two fifers played "The White Cockade."
Capt. Laurie requested reinforcements, but they were slow in coming.
Laurie withdrew his men to the east end of the bridge while the
minutemen crowded the west end. The British fired first. One Colonial
was wounded. Then a second British volley killed two patriots and
wounded two others. Buttrick ordered his minutemen to fire, and
three British soldiers fell dead.

The British fell back, met Smith's reinforcements, re-formed, and
stopped in Concord. The minutemen followed, but lack of discipline
aborted their advance. The Battle of Concord took a break!

At noon, the British forces began the return march to Boston. For an
hour all went well for them, but hundreds of Patriots joined the
minutemen, and ran in front and behind the British column, hiding
behind walls and trees, firing on them they passed. About a mile east
of Concord, the fighting resumed. For sixteen miles, the minutemen
continued their guerilla tactics, with a stream of reinforcements
replacing the dead and wounded. Confused and demoralized by this
unconventional and ungentlemanly version of warfare, the British
troops retreated in panic toward Lexington. The British troops
staggered onto Lexington Green to meet up with reinforcements, and
the retreat toward Boston and the protection of his majesty's ships
lying in the Charles River, continued.

The Americans suffered a total of ninety-five casualties, with forty-
nine killed. The British casualties were surprisingly light, a total of 273,
with only seventy-two dead out of 2,000 troops. But the real loss for
the British was this realization:
THE WAR OF THE REVOLUTION HAD BEGUN!

[CTRL] QUANTUM LEAPS

2000-04-13 Thread [to:] [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The following is a list of dates of important "quantum leaps".

1903 The Wright Brother's first powered flight Kitty Hawk, North Carolina
1927 Charles Lindberg flies non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean
1947 Chuck Yeager breaks the sound barrier
1969 Neil Armstrong lands on the moon ("one giant leap for mankind").

Take a look at those dates. Notice that about every 20 to 24 years
there was a "giant leap for mankind"there was a quantum leap
forward in terms of man's capabilities.

Now consider that 31 years have elapsed since Armstrong's
historic moon landing.

31 years!

Question: What's happened in the last 31 years?
Where's the "Quantum Leap"?

Given that advancements in technology tend to produce more
advancements in an intensifying and accelerating rate
we should have had some very significant "leaps" in the last 31 years.

Where are they?

It is a very sad irony that Massachusetts is now the state with the
most stringent gun laws. The people of Massachusetts have forgotten
their heritage. It was 225 years ago April 19, that a small group of
Massachusetts militiamen refused to be disarmed by British soldiers.
A column of British Redcoats between 650 to 900 strong was
marching to Concord to seize "rebel arms".
The "rebel militia" intercepted the British at the Concord North Bridge.
It was there that the famous "shot heard round the world" was fired.
The important meaning of that shot is no longer understood by many.
Massachusetts is taking the lead in placing restrictions
on the Second Amendment.
They must have forgotten what a great price was paid to secure the
Rights and freedoms we have had in America.
If we surrender the Second Amendment, what's left of our Constitution

[CTRL] Traitorous Congress Sells Out the US

2000-04-13 Thread The Extremist

Newswatch Magazine Editorial:
http://www.newswatchmagazine.org/

There has been a dramatic rise among the general population
concerning the abuse of presidential and congressional power to
deliver America into an all-powerful world government under the
United Nations.

Many citizens are now becoming aware that a Marxist organization
founded in 1919 and incorporated in 1921 have now taken over ALL
key positions of power in the United States Federal Government.
That organization is called the Council on Foreign Relations. Former
President George Bush belonged to it and was on its Board of
Directors in 1978-79. He resigned to run for Vice-President. He was
also a member of Globalist David Rockefeller's Trilateral
Commission. He also resigned from its Board of Directors to run for
Vice-President. George Bush also was a member of Yale Universities
Skull and Bones, which is also working through infiltration into
corridors of power for world government. His son, Governor George
W. Bush, is also a Bonesman.

Current President Bill Clinton is still a member of BOTH the Council
on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission. Most Cabinet
members of any significance for the last 50 years have been members
of the Council on Foreign Relations. This is WHY our government -
on the federal level - continues its downward spiral toward
Socialism/Communism and Corporate Globalism WITHOUT WE,
THE PEOPLE'S CONSENT.

The Constitution of the United States derives its power FROM the
consent of the governed. The Socialist/Communist that have taken
over Washington, DC, NEVER ask for nor do they want
CONSENT for their treasonous activities.

Example: W. Cleon Skousen, former Assistant to FBI Director J.
Edgar Hoover, discovered 45 objectives the Communists were
striving to achieve to overthrow America for world government.
When you understand these objectives, then you will comprehend
WHY the militia began to rise to protect the country from tyranny
[because of the Ruby Ridge, WACO, and Oklahoma City episodes],
WHY The Republic of Texas movement started for Texas to become
an independent nation, WHY Arizona has drafted legislation to
secede from the Union if Martial Law is called or the Federal
Government begins to confiscate guns in violation of the 2nd
Amendment, and WHY the Southern Party has risen to take the
South back into one political camp to preserve their Southern "Bible
Belt" heritage!

Out of the 45 objectives listed in the Congressional Record, I will
mention only a few:

11) Promote the United Nations as the only hope for mankind. If its
charter is rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one-world-
government with its own independent armed forces. [Guess who
would control the armed forces? By agreement between Russia and
the U.S. Secretary of State, it would ALWAYS be a Communist -
which has held true to this moment. No wonder Senator Jesse Helms
from North Carolina went to the Security Council on January 20,
2000, and basically said back off or the U.S. will withdraw.]

12) Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist party.

13) Do away with loyalty oaths.

14) Capture one OR both political parties. President Bush was a
Republican while President Clinton is a Democrat.

15) Use technical decisions of the courts to WEAKEN basic
American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.

16) Get control of schools. Use them to foster socialism and current
Communist propaganda. Get control of teacher's associations - such
as the National Educational Association [NEA].

17) Infiltrate the press and gain control of ALL major means of
communication - such as radio, TV, and motion pictures. Use these
agencies to destroy the morals of the nation.

18) Continue discrediting American, especially Southern "Bible Belt,"
culture, by degrading ALL forms of artistic expression - nude movies,
books, perverted art, etc.

19) Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them
"censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.

20) BREAK DOWN cultural standards of morality by promoting
pornography in books, magazines, motion pictures, and TV.

21) Present homosexuality, degeneracy, and promiscuity as "healthy,
natural, normal."

22) Infiltrate the churches and replace REVEALED BIBLICAL
RELIGION WITH "SOCIAL" RELIGION. DISCREDIT THE
BIBLE and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity which does
not need a "religious crutch."

23) Eliminate prayer or ANY phase of religious expressions from the
schools.

24) DISCREDIT THE AMERICAN CONSTITUTION BY
CALLING IT INADEQUATE - OUT OF STEP.

25) Discredit the American founding fathers.

26) Belittle all forms of American culture and DISCOURAGE the
teaching of American history to eliminate knowledge of our God given
heritage.

27) Support ALL socialist movement to give CENTRALIZED
CONTROL over any part of the culture - education, social agencies
such as housing, welfare programs, mental health clinics, the Federal
Government in Washington, DC.

28) Infiltrate and

White House cancels congressional mission to China

Updated 10:16 PM ET April 13, 2000
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House has canceled a April 14-20 U.S.
congressional trade mission to China, administration officials said on
Thursday.
Commerce Secretary William Daley had planned to lead the delegation as part
of a White House effort to round up votes in Congress for a landmark trade
agreement with China.

But several lawmakers who were expected to join Daley on the trip dropped
out at the last minute, forcing the White House to call off the mission, the
officials told Reuters.

The White House still plans to take a delegation of U.S. lawmakers to China
starting April 24. That mission is expected to be led by Daley, as well as
Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman, administration officials said.

The mission starting April 14 was scrapped after U.S. union leaders said
they would target lawmakers who took part in the White House-sponsored
trips. Administration officials said most of the lawmakers canceled because
they wanted to spend the upcoming congressional recess in their home
districts.

Most of us are sick to our stomachs over the words Elian Gonzales.
However, the Cubans may be able to pull off what Whites, Militias
and religious zealots have been failing at for more than five years
... the crash of this most corrupt government. Those who
said the federal powers would never do to the Cuban community what
they do to White Christians on a routine basis are about to see the
'fish or cut bait' syndrome unfold.

Janet [the Waco flame thrower] Reno has made her ultimatum and given
the so-called relatives of Elian till this afternoon to turn over
the boy to his father. "The Order will be enforced" the news is now
repeating. Is that her 'final answer'? If she goes there with power
she will be greeted with not 83 bodies to char, but 300, nay 3,000,
and man, are those Cubanos agitated. Last week the Mayor of Dade
County [yup, the County has a mayor] indicated his police force
would NOT partake of the fray on the side of the law, ie, he has
already declared Dade to be an independent country.

If I were the relatives, I'd secretly spirit Elian out another door
to an undisclosed location and let the demonstrators defend the
homestead. So here we have a situation similar to the proverbial
mother-in-law going over the cliff in your new Mercedes. Do we
relish in watching the government fail, or, in the alternative,
incinerate 3,000 Cubans? Your guess is as good as mine, but I hardly
think these uppity wetbacks are going to back down and comply with
the Justice Department's Order.

[CTRL] Smith Wesson, government now disagree on settlement (fwd)

Smith Wesson, government now disagree on settlement

By Jonathan Weisman
April 13, 2000

BALTIMORE SUN

WASHINGTON--Smith Wesson, America's largest manufacturer of
handguns, has issued a "clarification" of its landmark pact with
the federal government that would effectively eviscerate much of
the gun controls trumpeted by the Clinton administration. Smith
Wesson's interpretation - posted on its Web site - has forced
the company back into talks with the administration that could
lead to a protracted court battle. Administration officials
dismissed Smith Wesson's interpretation as more of a
public-relations gambit than a genuine change of heart, but said
they would be willing to go to court to force Smith Wesson into
compliance. "The deal speaks for itself," Neal Wolin, general
counsel of the Treasury Department, said of the agreement that
Smith Wesson reached March 17 with federal, state and local
officials as a way to settle lawsuits it had faced related to gun
violence.

"I think the language of the deal is clear on all these points,"
Wolin said.

Contrary to the government's interpretation, the gun manufacturer
says now, its agreement would compel Smith Wesson dealers to
impose background checks and other gun-sale restrictions only on
buyers of Smith Wesson products. The government maintains that
dealers who wish to sell Smith Wesson's products must impose
such restrictions on buyers of all guns. Moreover, the company
says, the criminal background checks to which it agreed for
gun-show sales would not apply to guns sold by private citizens,
only to those sold by licensed dealers.

Gun-show sales by licensed dealers are already subject to
background checks. "We can't agree to control things that we
have no way to control," said Ken Jorgensen, a Smith Wesson
spokesman. Federal officials touted Smith Wesson's accord as a
breakthrough, largely because it was supposed to have a broad
effect on the firearms industry.

Under the government's interpretation, Smith Wesson agreed that
its products could be sold only by dealers who followed a strict
"code of responsibility" for all gun sales, not just sales of
Smith Wesson products. White House officials acknowledged that
there were now stark differences between the administration's
position and that of Smith Wesson, which President Clinton
hailed last month as a courageous and visionary company. Since
the deal was signed, Smith Wesson has come under pressure from
gun manufacturers, gun dealers and gun-rights activists, who have
accused it of sabotaging the industry.

[CTRL] New Blockbuster Affidavit (fwd)

2000-04-13 Thread MICHAEL SPITZER

From:

http://insightmag.com/cgi-bin/ViewNews.cfm?Item=56

New Blockbuster Affidavidt!!

A shocking sworn declaration by a former White House lawyer
accuses superiors of misleading and false statements to courts!

4/13/00 - Judicial Watch is preparing to file a sworn affidavit
from a former White House deputy counsel in the Office of
Administration that accuses superiors, including John Podesta,
the current White House chief of staff, with preparing false and
misleading affidavits for submission in a court case.

The declaration of Jane D. Weaver, a colonel in the U.S. Air
Force Reserves, will be filed April 14 before Judge Royce
Lamberth's district court by Judicial Watch in its $90 million
"Filegate" case against the Clinton White House.

The explosive charges levied by Weaver, who left the White House
job early in Bill Clinton's first term, alleges that in a
separate case (Armstrong et al vs. Executive Office of the
President) that members of the White House counsel's office
routinely sought to force or insert incorrect information or
otherwise provided misleading facts into sworn affidavits filed
by EOP employees to the courts.

"I vividly remember one Clinton White House meeting (I believe it
was in the West Wing), which included then-Deputy Chief of Staff
John Podesta, lawyers from the White House Counsel's Office, and
the Department of Justice where the Armstrong case and related
affidavits were discussed," Weaver states. "Over my objections,
it was decided by Podesta and others at the meeting to pursue a
course of action I felt was misleading and legally inconsistent
with prior sworn declarations to the court."

Moreover, Weaver reveals in her shocking declaration: "There was
definite pressure on me from the Clinton White House and
Counsel's Offfice to obtain misleading affidavits."

She goes on to provide specific examples and reviews one
occassion where she "had to work past midnight on a particular
Armstrong compliance issue because sataffers at OA ... refused to
sign affidavits with language prepared by White House Counsel
because they were false, or the declarations the White House
wanted to be made concerned things which were unknowns (and thus
could not be testified to), making the affidavits misleading."

Weaver states that the reason she is coming forward now with her
explosive testimony is due to "Recent news reports about lies to
this Court from the Clinton White House about computer systems in
the White House involving, among other things, e-mail and and the
Automated Records Management System (ARMS)" and she wanted to
"alert the Court to my related personal experiences."

One of the key issues being pursued by Judicial Watch, a
non-profit watchdog group in Washington, before Lamberth is a
pattern of misleading, deceptive and untruthful statements made
by the White House in conjuction with Filegate and other cases.

Larry Klayman, chairman and general counsel of Judicial Watch,
tells Insight that "the White House can no longer be trusted.
It's word is worthless and the court must conduct its own
evidentiary hearings to get at the truth."

"This also underscores why the Lamberth court must take custody
of the e-mails and related evidence to protect it from tampering
and destruction," Klayman said. He added that the Weaver
declaration is additional proof from another White House insider
(making it three in total) confirming widespread obstruction of
justice at the White House.

Albright set to plant US firmly in Central Asia's new 'Great Game'
by Matthew Lee

WASHINGTON, April 12 (AFP) - When Secretary of State Madeleine Albright
arrives
in Central Asia on a three-country tour this weekend, she will be placing
the
United States firmly in the middle of a new "Great Game" -- a battle for
influence in the region once waged by imperial Britain and Russia.

Though access to India, control of overland Euro-Asian trading routes,
including the fabled Silk Road, and territorial gain have been replaced as
prizes in the 21st-century version of the game, US officials believe the
stakes
are just as high now as they were when Victorian Britain and Czarist Russia
waged their war of espionage and skullduggery.

Keen to be a player in the region with massive oil reserves as well as to

the spread of drugs and Islamic terrorist groups, the United States has
dispatched three top officials to Central Asia's former Soviet states in the
past month.

Albright -- who will visit Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan after a
stop
in Ukraine -- is following in the steps of CIA director George Tenet and FBI
director Louis Freeh, who met with regional officials in the region to
discuss
intelligence and law enforcement issues.

Albright will bring with her a slightly different, but equally critical
focus,
closing the triangle begun by Tenet and Freeh with a diplomatic mission
billed
as a visit centered on regional security, democracy building and promoting
rule
of law.

She will be offering about three million dollars in border enforcement aid
to
each of the three nations, US officials say.

"These countries are located in an area of great challenge and we've got a
tremendous interest in helping them guard against the problems endemic to
the
area," said one senior official.

After leaving Ukraine on Saturday, Albright is to travel to Astana where
fierce
competition over the huge petroleum deposits on Kazakhstan's Caspian Sea
coast
has long engaged US oil firms despite recurrent complaints of corruption and
other hitches in the privatization process.

"They still haven't done enough to create the right environment to keep
investment coming in instead of scaring it away," the official said,
describing
the Kazakh stop as the most commercial of the three.

Central to Albright's message will be the removal of business restrictions,
particularly a cap of exports of oil by foreign companies, which has vexed
US
firms, the official said.
"We would like to see that cap lifted either before or during the
secretary's
trip, if not after," the official said.
From Kazakhstan, Albright will make her way to Kyrgyzstan on Sunday -- the
smallest of her three destinations and the only one where she will not stay
overnight.
The once-burgeoning new democracy there is now challenged by repressive
government measures as well as the threat of terrorism.
Washington has condemned the arrests of several opposition figures and
deplored
fraud in Kyrgyzstan's February elections which US officials have termed
"disappointing."
"Kyrgyzstan was one of the leading lights in Central Asia but it has kind of
slipped off the path," the senior official said. "It is susceptible and we
want
to make that point to the Kyrgyz."

If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days, you would have produced
enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee. (Hardly seems worth it)

If you fart consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to
create the energy of an atomic bomb. (Now that's more like it)

A pig's orgasm lasts for 30 minutes. (In my next life I want to be a pig)

Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour. (Still not over
that pig thing)

Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure. (Is
that why Flipper was always smiling?)

The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue. (Hm)

Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed
people do. (If you're ambidextrous do you split the difference?)

The ant can lift 50 times its own weight, can pull 30 times its own weight
and always falls over on its right side when intoxicated. (From drinking
little bottles of...?) (Did the govt pay for this research??)

Polar bears are left handed. (Who knew?,Who cares...?)

The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds. (What can be so tasty on the bottom
of the pond?)

The flea can jump 350 times its body length. (It's like a human jumping the
length of a football field. )

A cockroach will live nine days without it's head, before it starves to
death.(Creepy)

The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its
body. The female initiates sex by ripping the males head off. (Honey, I'm
home. What the?!)

Some lions mate over 50 times a day. (In my next life I still want to be a
pig... quality over quantity)

Butterflies taste with their feet. (Oh, geez)

An ostrich's eye is bigger than it's brain. (I know some people like that.)

Starfish don't have brains. (I know some people like that too)

After reading all these, all I can say is...LUCKY Pigs!!!

Have A Great Day!

[CTRL] JUDICIAL WATCH V. ACLU: Fight Of The Century (fwd)

2000-04-13 Thread MICHAEL SPITZER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 12, 2000
Contact: Kyle Key
(202) 646-5172

JUDICIAL WATCH
V.
ACLU

"Fight Of The Century"

Someone Must Continue to Wage Battle Against Communism

(Washington, D.C.) Judicial Watch will be intervening and filing
amicus briefs in the lawsuit recently filed in Miami by the
American CivilLiberties Union ("ACLU") to attempt to remove the
Miami-Dade County boycott of commerce with Cuba, commonly known
as the "Cuba Affidavit."

Recently, events concerning Elian Gonzales and the coziness of
the Clinton Administration with Castro, not only unmask the
latent far-leftist bent of the current Administration, but have
also brought out of the woodwork groups such as the ACLU.

"Judicial Watch will not stand by and allow Miami-Dade County or
any American entity to be forced to do business with a
totalitarian dictator

and murderer from Communist Cuba. The ‘rape' of Elian Gonzales'
right to liberty and freedom is just the opening salvo of the war
between the right and the left over the reintroduction of
Communist influence into U.S. society," stated Judicial Watch
Chairman and General Counsel Larry Klayman.
