President to unveil stimulus package Tuesday



WASHINGTON (CNN) --President Bush will call for the complete elimination of the tax on stock dividends in his economic stimulus package, a senior administration official said Monday.

Bush is expected to announce a jobs and growth plan on Tuesday that would cost about $600 billion over 10 years , a Bush administration official said.

Administration and congressional sources familiar with the details of the White House plan said it likely would include new tax breaks for individuals and businesses, write-offs for businesses that purchase certain equipment and acceleration of tax cuts currently scheduled to take effect in 2004.

I think what the president's interested in doing -- what I'm interested in doing -- is growing the economy, U.S. Sen. Don Nickles, R-Oklahoma, told NBC's Meet the Press.

People that just want to play class warfare say, 'If you have tax cuts, that's going to benefit the wealthy,'  Nickles said. Well, the wealthy are paying most of the taxes. You ought to have tax cuts for taxpayers.

But Democrats -- who plan to release a stimulus package Monday -- said middle- and low-income families are the ones who need their taxes lowered.

What we want is to give tax relief to the middle class, U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nevada, told NBC. We want to do something to have people have more confidence in what's going on in corporate America. And we have to do something about the people that are out of work now, who have no unemployment benefits.

Sources said the president's plan may reinstate an extension of unemployment compensation that expired in December. The plan also may include other benefits for jobless Americans, including job training programs, the sources said. The president is expected to announce his economic plan during a visit to Chicago, Illinois, on Tuesday.

The president also will propose giving federal dollars to cash-strapped states to fund Medicaid and other programs, the sources said.

The plan also could include proposals targeted to middle- and low-income Americans, such as a child tax credit and a boost in the earned income tax credit, the sources said, but it is not clear if those provisions will make it.

Package not a done deal

Despite his party's control of Congress, the prospects for Bush's plan are uncertain.

You may see some fine-tuning of the president's program to make it more effective, to actually get more bang for the buck, said U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Indiana. But I think you'll see broad bipartisan support for targeting tax cuts and investment incentives and aid to the states and unemployed, to kind of provide us an insurance policy to get job creation moving.

I think probably it's a good idea to have some cuts in taxes on dividends, U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, said on CBS' Face the Nation. But I think it's important to recognize that the people that have kept our economy going are middle-income Americans.

Congressional sources said a Democratic counterproposal would be more expensive than the White House plan in the short term, though it would cost less in the long term -- reflecting the Democratic view that more must be done immediately to bolster the economy.

The Democratic plan likely will include a refundable tax credit, similar to the 2001 tax rebate checks, sources said. However, instead of covering only those people who pay taxes, as the 2001 rebate did, the Democratic plan also would provide the credit to those who don't pay taxes, the sources said.

At a news conference Friday, incoming House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California gave few details of the proposal but characterized it as fair and fiscally sound.

It will create jobs ... and it will grow the economy, she said.

Pelosi dismissed the reported outline of the Bush plan as a Trojan horse to wheel in some tax breaks for the high-end that they're so fond of.

There's no question the economy's in big trouble, Reid said. We have to look at what's good for the average American.

How, how, how did we ever get ourselves in a predicament where an
Oriental-style despot controls American medicine and most doctors fear to
prescribe what they think best for their patients? Why, more than 200 years
after a war to liberate ourselves from a half-mad king, have we allowed our
lives and health to come under the rule of a totally mad Tsar? And has this
monstrous tumor destroyed the Constitution only by accident, or did its
creators have that intent all along?

Well, here's my theory:

Most people think the TSOG (Tsarist Occupation Government) began its
infestation of America with Bushware 1.0, when he appointed a Tsar to
discombobulate our previously demO-kratic form of gubment; but Bush had a
long C.I.A. career behind him and the C.I.A. had a long, long Tsarist
history before they came out in the open with a public and blatant Tsar--a
functionary not endowed or permitted by any clause in our Constitution.

Actually, the TSOG began replacing representative democracy in the U.S. way
back in 1945, when Gen. Rheinhard Gehlen, Hitler's Chief of Soviet
Intelligence, surrendered to the U.S. Army after first prudently burying
several truckloads of inside information about the Soviet Union at a
secret location. (The Cold War began before World War II ended; they just
didn't bother to tell the serfs like you and me about it until 1947.)

Gehlen ranks as not only a master spy but a wizard negotiator. Within a
week, he got out of his Nazi uniform and into a U.S. Army General's uniform;
the U.S. intelligence services, in return, got the info about the Soviets,
including access to Gehlen's agents in the Soviet government--a group of
Mystical Tsarists who had infiltrated both the Red Army and the KGB.

You see, their leader and Gehlen's major asset, General Andrei Vlassov,
had a fervent belief, not just in common or garden-variety Tsarism, but
especially in the mystical Tsarism espoused in the latter half of the 19th
Century by the anti-Semitic novelist Dostoyevsky and even more by Konstantin
Pobedonostsev, an advisor to two Tsars (Alexander III and Nicholas II).

Pobedonostsev, popularly called The Grand Inquisitor because of the vast
platoons of spies, snoops, agents provocateur and informers he unleashed
upon the Russian people, combined theological obsessions with reactionary
politics, always an explosive and nefarious mixture.

Mystical Tsarism, a holy religion, or crazy superstition--as you will--has
two major tenets: (1) The Tsar is guided by God and can do no wrong, and (2)
Reason is cold and inhuman, faith is warm and human; therefore we should
ignore reason and guide ourselves by faith in the Tsar, our Little Father.
I don't think any of Pobedonostsev's crew actually believed in the Tooth
Fairy, though.

Besides, Roman Catholics of the old school have similar attitudes, but
merely prefer a Pope to do their thinking for them instead of a Tsar, and
most of us consider them sane, but just dumb.

Gen. Gehlen and Gen. Vlassov formed what became the Gehlenapparat, the CIA's
main source of info on Soviet affairs; Gehlen became the fulcrum of the
CIA's Soviet penetration sector, working under James Jesus Angleton, Chief
of Counter-Intelligence, breeder of prize orchids, lover of the arts, and a
devout Roman Catholic.

Since the U.S. government based its foreign policies on C.I.A. reports, and
the C.I.A. based its Soviet reports on Gehlen and some other former Nazis,
plus a crew of Mystical Tsarists, as filtered and interpreted by a Papist
intellectual, the U.S. government's ideas and actions became increasingly
weird, bizarre and frightening, in the view of the rest of the world. The
results after 50 years seem very sad and very funny. In a nutshell, most of
the world thinks we've gone batshit crazy. Tsarists and Nazis and spooks,
oh my!

Although James Jesus Angleton was Gehlen's alleged supervisor, data
indicates that the Gehlenapparat engaged in many activities, including
kidnapping, extortion, murder, etc. about which Angleton either did not know
or devoutly did not want to know.

But James J. Angleton seems a pathological case of some sort himself; he
often hid his middle name because it revealed his half-Hispanic genes. An
exceptionally intelligent and sensitive student of modern literature while
at Yale, Angleton adored T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens, I.A.
Richards, e e cummings and other SuperStars of Modernism; he met most of

  miles, of which 108.10 miles was taken as the territory of Israel out of the

  area of Old Jerusalem is 620 acres + say 108.10632 square miles of the Dead 
  Sea, together the two have an area of 109.075070 square miles. 
  
  This means 
  that the area outside of the Old City and the Dead Sea is some 7,883.529 
  square miles and is equivalent to 5,931.734264 square nautical miles (6,087.0

  that the Navigators wanted to make the statement that the land of Israel is

One of the Chechen terrorist leaders, Sabiyev, was killed in the Shalinsky district in Chechnya.
Yesterday, an unknown individual opened fire against federal servicemen who were carrying out address checks in the Germenchuk settlement. The offender was shot dead in retaliatory fire, the Russian Interior Ministry reported on Saturday.
The militant turned out to be an active member of separatists' gang, the so-called emir of the local jamaat, Sabiyev.
Two servicemen wounded in the skirmish received medical treatment. The police found two Kalashnikov guns, a Kenwood radio station and a Makarov gun at the incident site.

Israeli fury over British 'arms ban'

ISRAEL has accused Britain of
imposing a covert arms embargo that could compromise its air defences in a war against
Iraq.

The diplomatic dispute between Washingtons two closest allies centres on Israeli 
protests
that Britain has delayed the export of key spare parts without which Israel may have to
ground its ageing fleet of Phantom fighter- bombers.

This is a major cloud in our bilateral relations with Britain, Victor Harel, a 
senior Israeli
Foreign Ministry official, said last night.

British officials deny imposing any boycott, covert or otherwise, but confirm that all 
military
exports to Israel are carefully scrutinised to ensure that they are not used against
Palestinians in the occupied territories. We wont export anything that could be used 
for
external aggression or internal repression, a Foreign Office spokesman said.

The most crucial Phantom spare parts are ejector-seat charges. The British-made 
devices,
which hurl a pilot to safety, are among 140 military items whose delivery has been 
delayed
since the outbreak of the Palestinian intifada in September 2000, Israeli defence 
officials
said.

One Israeli government official charged Britain with undermining his countrys defences
against President Saddam Hussein. He blamed a Europe-wide failure to accept that 
Israels
actions against Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza were self-defence against
terrorism.

We are talking about aircraft which are for the self- defence of Israel when we are 
facing Iraq
at this point. I think we should have a much better understanding on the British side 
of our
position, he said.

 They may also be trying to appease the Arab countries by saying, Look, we dont 
have a
pro-Israeli policy - you have to help us in the big picture with Iraq.

Israeli officials said that Jack Straw, the Foreign Secretary, ignored the appeals of 
Binyamin
Netanyahu, the Israeli Foreign Minister, during a meeting before Christmas. They fear 
an
arms ban is part of a concerted British effort to improve relations with the Arab 
world ahead
of a war with Iraq, even at the expense of Anglo-Israeli ties.

Tony Blair has recently launched a charm offensive in the Arab world. Last month he 
hosted
President Bashar Assad of Syria in London. This week he met President Mubarak of Egypt,
then travelled to Jordan to see King Abdullah. Later this month the Prime Minister is 
hosting
a conference on reforming the Palestinian authority that Israel has already dismissed 
as a
sham.

Britain approved 128 export licence requests from January to November 2001, rejecting 
77.
Licences revoked since Israeli forces re-entered Palestinian areas in force after 
September
2000 include weapons sights, bombing computers, target-designating equipment,
torpedoes and demolition devices.

The Foreign Office said the scrutiny was necessary because Israel had provided false
assurances about the non-use of British equipment in the occupied territories.

Israel claims the restrictions have gone to ludicrous lengths, blocking even items 
such as
searchlights for police helicopters and specially- made target bullets for Israels 
rifle-shooting
team.

CJD linked to infected cow tongue
Call for new food ban after tests in US on hamsters suggest high transmission risk

Guidelines on the types of meat allowed into the food chain should be re-evaluated ,
according to scientists who have shown that tongue could carry a risk of infection 
from mad
cow disease.

The tongue meat could contain high levels of the prion protein thought to cause bovine
spongiform encephal-opathy (BSE) in cattle and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in
humans, scientists at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, found.

Tests showed that prions injected into hamster brains travelled to the tongue and
accumulated at relatively high levels there.

The research was published in the Journal of Virology and reported in the science 
journal
Nature. The team, led by Professor Richard Bessen, also suggest that, in humans, prions
causing CJD might enter the body via the tongue.

It is presently believed prions infect people through the stomach.

Prions injected into hamsters' tongues took one to two weeks to reach the brain. These
animals fell ill in around 80 days -- compared with 190 days when infected through the 
gut.

According to Professor Bessen, the prions can enter through small wounds on the tongue.

He said: 'A lesion, cut or infection could enhance the ability of [an animal or 
person] to
become infected.'

Dr James Ironside, director of the National CJD Surveillance Unit in Edinburgh, says we
cannot be sure, as yet, how prions get into people .

He said: 'The route of infection is interesting. We do not know how BSE or variant CJD 
is
spread through the body. At the unit we have been looking at a number of tissues in
patients who have died from CJD. We have detected abnormal proteins in the tonsils but 
not
in the tongue muscle itself.

'This does not mean, however, that the tongue is not the route of the infection. The 
person
could have been infected many years before death and the infection could have moved. We
don't know how the agent gets into the body. Other people have suggested lesions in the
gums or dental problems could be a route of entry.'

Cattle spine and brain are barred from meat products in the UK because they are
considered to be at high risk of carrying BSE. Tongue is not banned, however. And 
there are
fears that infected beef is still entering the food chain. There are also safety 
concerns over
meat from sheep and deer with related prion diseases.

Jan Fraser, of the Institute for Animal Health in Edinburgh, confirmed that nerves 
could carry
infectious prions from the brain to the tongue. But mice injected with nerve cells from
infected cow tongue had remained healthy.

Dr Fraser said: 'Whether there's sufficient [infectivity] to cause disease is a moot 
point.

'We have no evidence at the moment for infectivity in the tongue or peripheral nerves 
of BSE
cattle.'

Dr Fraser added, however, that the new result makes further testing worthwhile.

In October, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) announced results of research which found
BSE infectivity in cow tonsil. This is of concern because it is known that tonsil 
tissue can be
found at the root of the tongue. While tongue can be sold in the UK, tonsil is not 
permitted in
meat products.

A limited initial study of current practice suggests that tonsil tissue does not 
appear to
remain on the tongues prepared for human consumption. But the FSA is sufficiently
concerned to carry out further research.

A spokeswoman for the Food Standards Agency Scotland said: 'Tongue is not specified 
risk
material and can enter the food chain.

'The Agency plans to assess the way in which tongue is extracted, in particular to see
whether any traces of tonsil tissue might be inadvertently included with tongue.

'The results from these further investigations into the way bovine tongues are removed 
will
form part of a risk assessment to be considered by the Government's BSE advisory
committee.'

Clive Evers, spokesman for the CJD Support Network, last night called for precautions 
to be
taken to avoid any possible risk of infection.

'The approach that the CJD Support Network takes is that, when there is any 
identification of
food products that might contain BSE prions, the product should be removed from the 
food
chain. Any opportunity for the prion to get into the food chain should be eliminated. 
The risk
should be minimised.

'The amount of infected prions necessary to cause CJD is minuscule. They are extremely
powerful.

'As far as the new route of infection is concerned, I think that is an interesting 
finding. The
idea that CJD can get into the body through a cut in the tongue would need to be 
replicated
by other researchers before we react to it.'

Martin Scorceses new movie, The Gangs of New York, is remarkable in that
it accurately portrays the New York City working classs violent opposition
to the Lincoln administration during the War for Southern Independence. At
one point in the movie, as the caskets of dead New Yorkers are piled up on
the docks, a large crowd chants, New York should secede! New York should
secede!  In another scene Irish immigrants who have been in the U.S. for
only a few days are told to sign one piece of paper that grants them
citizenship and another one that enrolls them in the Union army. They are
completely unaware of their fate: One immigrant asks, Where are we going?
Tennessee is the answer, to which he responds: Wheres that? These men
were to go down south to ostensibly teach the grandchildren of Thomas
Jefferson and Patrick Henry what it really means to be an American.
Thousands of them would be slaughtered after being ordered by General
Ulysses S. Grant to charge into Robert E. Lees well-entrenched army.  The
climax of the movie is the New York City draft riots of July 1863. The
government began enforcing Lincolns conscription law, accurately depicted
in a newspaper headline in the film as The First Federal Conscription
Law. The wealthy Republican industrialists and bankers who were the
backbone of the Republican Party saw to it that Lincolns conscription law
would spare their own male children by allowing one to buy ones way out of
the draft for $300. This led to violent protests against the inequity of a
rich mans war. In the film a young draftee confronts one of Lincolns
conscription enforcers by screaming into his face, Who the hell has
$300?! Who the hell has $300?! The draftees knew perfectly well who has
$300, so that in mid July of 1863 they went on a week-long rampage,
targeting the houses and property of the Republican Party elite of New York
City. New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley, who had become a Republican
Party mouthpiece, is shown running for his life from a dinner party at a
palace-like residence in the good part of town as the draft protesters
break the windows and loot the house. As Iver Bernstein wrote in The New
York City Draft Riots, Rioters tore through expensive Republican homes on
Lexington Avenue and took  or more often destroyed  pictures with gilt
frames, elegant pier glasses, sofas, chairs, clocks, furniture of every
kind. Scorcese and his producers obviously did their homework and must
have read Bernsteins book. All during the scene of the draft riots there
is a reading of headlines describing the events. Having read extensively
about the draft riots myself, I recognized almost all of this script as
being accurate, such as the burning down of a black orphanage and of the
offices of Greeley newspaper.  Another perfectly accurate portrayal is the
hunting down and murdering of any and all black people who were unfortunate
enough to be on the streets of New York. Since Lincolns Emancipation
Proclamation had recently declared emancipation to be a purpose of the war,
the draft protesters vented their hatred for Lincoln and his war on the
hapless black people of New York City. There are scenes in the movie of
black men being beaten to death and lynched, which once again is perfectly
accurate.  Just as realistic is the scene where thousands of federal troops
are called up from the recently concluded Battle of Gettysburg and ordered
to fire indiscriminately into the crowds. Hundreds of unarmed draft
protesters, including women and children, are gunned down and are shown
laying dead in the streets. This really happened, and is well documented in
Bernsteins book and elsewhere, but most Americans have never heard of it
(naturally). Gunships are also shown bombarding the parts of the city where
the rioting was taking place.  An eyewitness to the riots was Colonel
Arthur Fremantle, the British emissary to the Confederate government who
happened to be heading back to England at the time from the Port of New
York. In his memoirs of his time with Robert E. Lees Army of Northern
Virginia entitled Three Months in the Southern States, Fremantle wrote of
the riots:  The reports of outrages, hangings, and murder, were now most
alarming, the terror and anxiety were universal. All shops were shut: all
carriages and omnibuses had ceased running. No colored man or woman was
visible or safe in the streets, or even in his own dwelling. Telegraphs
were cut, and railroad tracks torn up. The draft was suspended, and the mob
evidently had the upper hand. The people who cant pay $300 naturally hate
being forced to fight in order to liberate the very race who they are most
anxious should be slaves. It is their direct interest not only that all
slaves should remain slaves, but that the free Northern Negroes who compete

Over the centuries, in times of war or threatened war, deterrence has frequently been used to avoid direct hand-to-hand or nation-to-nation combat. The most memorable recent use of deterrence as a weapon was the sixties and seventies “Cold War” between America and the Soviet Union, with both sides pointing huge arsenals of nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles at each other. Neither side dared fire the first ICBM, because the calculated ultimate result of a long-range nuclear exchange would have been the total destruction of both sides; a process known in western military circles as MAD [Mutually Assured Destruction].
    
Deterrence has also been used on a “proxy” basis by the superpowers, when smaller states have threatened each other in such a way that other countries would inevitably have been drawn into the conflict. One such example was Israel’s attack on the Arab nations, when air reconnaissance photographs proved the Israelis were arming their nuclear intermediate-range missiles, in order to destroy  the civilian populations of  “enemy” capital cities in the Middle East. Realizing the imminent danger of an Arab holocaust, the Russians very openly armed two “Scud C” missile  batteries in Egypt with nuclear warheads, then casually aimed them directly at Tel Aviv. Mutual destruction was thus assured by the superpower umpire, and deterrence won the day.
    
Nuclear weapons were not the long-term deterrence solution however, because in the event of a madman calling someone’s bluff, a nuclear weapon would actually have to be fired with unpredictable results. What was needed was a far more subtle system, one that could be used openly in such a way that the public would not recognize it as a weapon system at all. Most obvious was the serious manipulation of weather patterns on  the “aggressor’s ” home turf, thereby forcing him to back off ,or face military and economic ruin.
    
Such weather weapons, under active development by Russia, France, America and other countries for at least the last fifty years, can also be used for “indirect” warning purposes. Say for example that the Zionists in New York were intent on capturing Arab oil supplies in order to save the American  “economy”, and their principal weapon was American air power launched primarily from US aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf.
   
Fine so far, but what if  a directed weather  weapon was then used to demonstrate how easy it would be to completely destroy one of the largest nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in the entire US Fleet [without actually sinking it]. Exactly how would the Zionists respond to a demonstration of such awesome power?
    
First, of course, there would need to be a warning of the upcoming event, or those in power could all too easily write the demonstration off as merely a severe “quirk” in the weather. Strong though unsubstantiated rumor suggests that just such a warning was sent to the US Department of State on 27 December 2002, but was ignored. Try not to worry too much about this warning folks. After all, it is still only a rumor that the warning was sent to the US Department of State, and only fools listen to rumors, right? 

Approximately twenty-four hours later a massive cyclone, initially predicted by the Hawaii-based Joint Typhoon Warning Centre to reach only category 1-2 on a scale of 1-5, span out of control in the Pacific, rapidly descending on the “Solomon Islands”, which by pure coincidence are namesakes of the most sacred Zionist and Masonic “Solomon’s Temple” in Jerusalem.
    
Cyclone Zoe was far and away more powerful than Cyclone Tracy, which completely destroyed the Australian City of Darwin three decades ago. We will shortly return and examine the extremely “unnatural” behavior of this unheard-of 300-mph category 7+ monster called Zoe.
    
At midnight on Christmas day, the captain of the American nuclear aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln [CVN72], received new top secret orders while anchored off the port of Fremantle in Western Australia. Rather than depart Fremantle on 26th December for her homeport in Washington State, USA, CVN72 was ordered to remain in Australia for another  two days. The objective was to take on maximum supplies before departing for the Persian Gulf, as the spearhead of an as-yet-undeclared American war on Iraq during early January.

An old conflict comes back to haunt usâ¦.

On June 13, 2002, Shin Hyo-soon and Shim Mi-sun, both 14 years old, walked along the side of a road on their way to a birthday party, chattering and laughing, as children do. They never saw the mammoth U.S. military truck with two soldiers on board as it crushed them, grinding their bodies into the South Korean earth.

A "tragic accident" say U.S. diplomats and military officers; an example of the heedless arrogance of American troops who have long since worn out their welcome, say growing numbers of South Koreans. Under the terms of the agreement between South Korea and the U.S. â which mandates that American soldiers charged with crimes on Korean soil are subject to U.S. law â Sgt. Fernando Nino and Sgt. Mark Walker were tried in a military court and acquitted of negligent homicide charges. The process was widely resented, and the reaction of virtually all political parties in South Korea was to denounce the verdict as a sham.

Here in the Imperial metropolis, the incident attracted little notice: a flare-up on the far frontier of the Empire, easily relegated to the back pages. Stars and Stripes was the only major American periodical to identify the girls by name at the time.

Out on the Korean fringes of the American Empire, however, the reaction was swift and ominous. After the verdict was announced, tens of thousands turned out in "Yankee go home" demonstrations of typically Korean ferocity, in which dozens were injured. Korea's pro-American President, Kim Dae-jung, said it was time to renegotiate the terms of the agreement.

The incident roiled the waters of the presidential election campaign: as even the generally pro-U.S. Grand National Party candidate â far ahead in the polls at that point â began to distance himself from the Americans. But the main beneficiary was Roh Moo-hyun, of the pro-government Democratic Millennium Party, who has been more critical of the U.S. presence.

"I don't have any anti-American sentiment," declared Roh, "but I won't kowtow to the Americans, either." A willingness to continue the "sunshine policy" of his predecessor â and stand up to the Americans â propelled Roh to a narrow triumph. The margin of victory may well have been provided by neoconservative hardliner Richard Perle, affectionately known around Washington as "the Prince of Darkness," who declared, on the eve of the election, that war with Pyongyang might be necessary.

The fall of Communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe showed Pyongyang two possible roads to the future. The North has been desperately trying to break out of its economic and political isolation, seeking to emulate East Germany rather than, say, Romania, and emerge out of the post-communist wilderness.

But the North-South rapprochement, which for a while showed real promise of effecting dÃ©tente (if not reunification of the peninsula), was stopped dead in its tracks by the ascension of the hardliners in Washington. The "sunshine policy" of Kim Dae-jung was overshadowed by the heavy hand of Washington, and the economic meltdown of the North Korean economy proceeded apace, with all hopes of a "soft landing" by Pyongyang dashed on the rocks of American intransigence.

The final straw was the infamous "axis of evil" speech, in which Bush put Kim Jong Il in the same category as Saddam Hussein and essentially telegraphed to the North Koreans that their turn to be "liberated" would come soon after Iraq's. In this context, the sudden admission by the North Koreans that their nuclear program is going full-speed ahead is far from inexplicable. In deciding to come out of the nuclear closet, what did they have to lose?

As Kim Jong Il threatens to take center stage away from Saddam Hussein as the chief spoke in the Axis of Evil, the wildly differing approaches to these twin crises is being underscored by administration critics as evidence of Bushian hypocrisy. Without a smidgin of evidence that Iraq possesses weapons of mass destruction, the Bushies are moving toward war, while the open flaunting of nukes by Pyongyang has â so far â provoked relatively little in the way of American saber-rattling. But that could change, and, in any event, this emphasis on these disparate approaches misses an important point: it is the similarities that have more to teach U.S. policymakers and their critics.

In north Asia, as in the Middle East, the main opponents of U.S. policy are America's staunchest allies: Japan and South Korea. The reason is simple: the North Koreans have vowed to turn the South into "a sea of flames" if war breaks out, and, if Pyongyang was going to be brought down, then they might decide to take Tokyo with them. "If they were attacked, I suspect they would probably wipe out Tokyo," says Bradley Martin, longtime foreign correspondent and veteran North Korea-watcher. "They hate the

I think I'm getting the picture. North Korea breaks all its nuclear agreements with the United States, throws out UN inspectors and sets off to make a bomb a year, and President Bush says it's "a diplomatic issue". Iraq hands over a 12,000-page account of its weapons production and allows UN inspectors to roam all over the country, and â after they've found not a jam-jar of dangerous chemicals in 230 raids â President Bush announces that Iraq is a threat to America, has not disarmed and may have to be invaded. So that's it, then.

How, readers keep asking me in the most eloquent of letters, does he get away with it? Indeed, how does Tony Blair get away with it? Not long ago in the House of Commons, our dear Prime Minister was announcing in his usual schoolmasterly tones â the ones used on particularly inattentive or dim boys in class â that Saddam's factories of mass destruction were "up [pause] and running [pause] now." But the Dear Leader in Pyongyang does have factories that are "up [pause] and running [pause] now". And Tony Blair is silent.

Why do we tolerate this? Why do Americans? Over the past few days, there has been just the smallest of hints that the American media â the biggest and most culpable backer of the White House's campaign of mendacity â has been, ever so timidly, asking a few questions. Months after The Independent first began to draw its readers' attention to Donald Rumsfeld's chummy personal visits to Saddam in Baghdad at the height of Iraq's use of poison gas against Iran in 1983, The Washington Post has at last decided to tell its own readers a bit of what was going on. The reporter Michael Dobbs includes the usual weasel clauses ("opinions differ among Middle East experts... whether Washington could have done more to stop the flow to Baghdad of technology for building weapons of mass destruction"), but the thrust is there: we created the monster and Mr Rumsfeld played his part in doing so.

But no American â or British â newspaper has dared to investigate another, almost equally dangerous, relationship that the present US administration is forging behind our backs: with the military-supported regime in Algeria. For 10 years now, one of the world's dirtiest wars has been fought out in this country, supposedly between "Islamists" and "security forces", in which almost 200,000 people â mostly civilians â have been killed. But over the past five years there has been growing evidence that elements of those same security forces were involved in some of the bloodiest massacres, including the throat-cutting of babies. The Independent has published the most detailed reports of Algerian police torture and of the extrajudicial executions of women as well as men. Yet the US, as part of its obscene "war on terror", has cosied up to the Algerian regime. It is helping to re-arm Algeria's army and promised more assistance. William Burns, the US Assistant Secretary of State for the Middle East, announced that Washington "has much to learn from Algeria on ways to fight terrorism".

And of course, he's right. The Algerian security forces can instruct the Americans on how to make a male or female prisoner believe that they are going to suffocate. The method â US personnel can find the experts in this particular torture technique working in the basement of the ChÃ¢teau Neuf police station in central Algiers â is to cover the trussed-up victim's mouth with a rag and then soak it with cleaning fluid. The prisoner slowly suffocates. There's also, of course, the usual nail-pulling and the usual wires attached to penises and vaginas and â I'll always remember the eye-witness description â the rape of an old woman in a police station, from which she emerged, covered in blood, urging other prisoners to resist.

Some of the witnesses to these abominations were Algerian police officers who had sought sanctuary in London. But rest assured, Mr Burns is right, America has much to learn from the Algerians. Already, for example â don't ask why this never reached the newspapers â the Algerian army chief of staff has been warmly welcomed at Nato's southern command headquarters at Naples.

And the Americans are learning. A national security official attached to the CIA divulged last month that when it came to prisoners, "our guys may kick them around a little in the adrenaline of the immediate aftermath (sic)." Another US "national security" official announced that "pain control in wounded patients is a very subjective thing". But let's be fair. The Americans may have learnt this wickedness from the Algerians. They could just as well have learned it from the Taliban.

January 4, 2002—"We sentenced Nazi leaders to death for waging a war of aggression," says International Law Professor Francis A. Boyle of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. By contrast, Prof. Boyle wants merely to impeach George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and John Ashcroft for their plans to invade Iraq and create a police state in America.

Boyle is offering his services as counsel, free of charge, to any member of the House of Representatives willing to sponsor articles of impeachment. He is experienced in this work, having undertaken it in 1991 for the late Rep. Henry B. Gonzalez (D-TX), in an effort to stop the first Persian Gulf War. It takes only one member to introduce articles of impeachment. Of course, it will take many more than that to vote for impeachment, which will culminate in a trial in the Senate. Boyle is confident that, once the articles are introduced, others, including Republicans, will co-sponsor them. But we have to convince our Representatives that impeachment is necessary for the country and politically safe for them. This non-violent, constitutional process may be our best way of stopping World War III and saving our civil rights.

Article II Sec. 4 of the Constitution states that: "The President, Vice President and all Civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors." Boyle says that waging a war of aggression is a crime under the Nuremberg Charter, Judgment and Principles. "It's very clear," he adds, "if you read all the press reports, they are going to devastate Baghdad, a metropolitan area of 5 million people. The Nuremberg Charter clearly says the wanton devastation of a city is a Nuremberg war crime."

The United States is a party to the Nuremberg Charter, Judgment and Principles, and thus is constitutionally bound to obey them. "The Constitution, in Article 6, says that international treaties are the supreme law of the land here in the United States of America. So all we would be doing here, in this impeachment campaign," Boyle says, "is impeaching them for violating international treaties, as incorporated into the United States Constitution, as well as the Constitution itself."

Bush Cabal Repudiates Nuremberg Principles

We don't have to wait for the devastation of Baghdad to impeach the Bush cabal because they have already repudiated the Nuremberg Charter via the so-called Bush Doctrine of preventive war and pre-emptive attack. "This doctrine of pre-emptive warfare or pre-emptive attack was rejected soundly in the Nuremberg Judgment, " Boyle says. "The Nuremberg Judgment . . . rejected this Nazi doctrine of international law of alleged self-defense." The Bush Doctrine, embodied in the National Security Strategy document, published on the White House web site, is appalling, Boyle says. "It reads like a Nazi planning document prior to the Second World War."

The Fruit Doesn't Fall Far From the Tree

As Rep. Henry B. Gonzalez explained on the floor of the House in 1991, his articles charged the elder Bush with:

1) Violating the Equal Protection Clause by having minorities and poor whites, who were the majority of the soldiers in the Middle East, "fight a war for oil to preserve the lifestyles of the wealthy."

2) Violating "the Constitution, Federal law, and the UN Charter by bribing, intimidating, and threatening others, including the members of the UN Security Council, to support belligerent acts against Iraq."

3) Violating the Nuremberg principles by conspiring to engage in a massive war against Iraq that would cause tens of thousands of civilian deaths.

4) Committing "the United States to acts of war without congressional consent and contrary to the UN Charter and international law." (This refers to the lack of a formal declaration of war, as required by the Constitution).

5) Committing crimes against the peace by leading the United States into aggressive war against Iraq, in violation of Article 24 of the UN Charter, the Nuremberg Charter, other international instruments and treaties, and the Constitution of the United States.

Boyle believes that the articles he drafted for Gonzalez' effort to impeach George H. W. Bush, the father, could still serve as a basis for impeaching George W. Bush, the son.

French Trial With Ripples for Europe

PARIS, Jan. 6 - Nine defendants, including the president of
the Bank of France, Jean-Claude Trichet, went on trial here
today in connection with a decade-old banking scandal that
could jeopardize Mr. Trichet's chances to become the next
president of the European Central Bank.

The session today, before a three-judge criminal court on
Île de la Cité in the heart of Paris, opened with the
rejection of a plea to postpone the trial to allow fresh
evidence.

The trial will examine whether Mr. Trichet, who was then
the director of the French Treasury, and the other
defendants covered up problems at Crédit Lyonnais, one of
France's biggest banks, in the early 1990's when it was
state-controlled. Prosecutors have accused Mr. Trichet of
helping in a fraudulent concealment of the extent of the
bank's losses and the provisions it had to make to cover
them.

The case is particularly intriguing because President
Jacques Chirac of France wants Mr. Trichet to become
president of the European Central Bank after Wim Duisenberg
of the Netherlands steps down. Mr. Duisenberg said last
February that he would resign in July when he turns 68.

But the case is also drawing attention because Mr. Trichet
has been among French officials proposing that France,
which will be the host of this year's meeting of the Group
of 7 leading industrial countries, focus debate on
regulatory changes in the financial markets after scandals
that led to the collapse of big corporations like Enron.

Mr. Trichet, 60, who entered the court through a side
entrance and avoided answering questions from reporters,
made his only comment on the charges two years ago, when he
announced that he was under investigation and said that he
had confidence in the French justice system. He has refused
to say anything about the case since.

The charges he faces carry a maximum jail sentence of five
years and a maximum fine of 375,00 euros ($390,000).

After a recess today, the chief judge, Olivier Perusset,
rejected a plea by Alain Géniteau, the lawyer who filed the
first suit over the collapse of Crédit Lyonnais, asking the
court to allow time for additional evidence to be presented
against the defendants. Acceptance of the plea would have
been a setback for Mr. Trichet, whose lawyers hope for an
early acquittal that would clear the way for him to succeed
Mr. Duisenberg.

The trial is the latest in France to feature investigating
magistrates' subjecting leading business executives and
politicians to almost ritual embarrassment. Other principal
defendants in the case include the former chairman of
Crédit Lyonnais, Jean-Yves Haberer, 70; Mr. Trichet's
predecessor as president of the Bank of France, Jacques de
Larosiere, 73; and former accountants of the firms Ernst 
Young and Coopers  Lybrand, now PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Crédit Lyonnais collapsed under the weight of billions of
dollars in soured financial dealings, including a misguided
investment in the American film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer,
and was bailed out by the French state at enormous expense.
While it was state-controlled, it also got in legal trouble
in the United States, where California officials have
brought two civil suits against it related to its
acquisition of a bond portfolio from Executive Life, a
failed insurer. The Federal Reserve is also investigating
whether Crédit Lyonnais violated American reporting
requirements.

The French government has been trying to reach settlements
in those cases, not least to spare Mr. Trichet any more
negative publicity .

In the years leading to the introduction of the euro in
1999, Mr. Chirac pressed other European nations hard to
choose Mr. Trichet as the first president of the European
Central Bank. A long and raucous meeting of European
leaders in the spring of 1998 ended with Mr. Chirac's
agreeing to accept Germany's preferred candidate, Mr.
Duisenberg, with the tacit understanding that he would make
way for Mr. Trichet before the end of his eight-year term.

Felix G. Rohatyn, the investment banker who served as
American ambassador in Paris in the 1990's, said he had
grown to admire Mr. Trichet and described him as very much
a modern central banker.

He strongly believes in the market system, Mr. Rohatyn
said. At the same time, he believes in intelligent
regulation.

He credited Mr. Trichet with supporting a strong franc when
French political parties of both left and right favored a
weak currency and with playing an important role in
fostering French acceptance of the euro as the national
currency. I think he would be a superb central bank
president, Mr. Rohatyn said. He declined to discuss the
criminal trial.

The investigation that led to the trial began in 1996 and
proceeded even after a French parliamentary inquiry had
cleared Mr. Trichet and other government officials of

Jesus 'healed using cannabis'

Jesus was almost certainly a cannabis user and an early proponent of the medicinal
properties of the drug, according to a study of scriptural texts published this month. 
The
study suggests that Jesus and his disciples used the drug to carry out miraculous 
healings.

The anointing oil used by Jesus and his disciples contained an ingredient called kaneh-
bosem which has since been identified as cannabis extract, according to an article by 
Chris
Bennett in the drugs magazine, High Times, entitled Was Jesus a Stoner? The incense
used by Jesus in ceremonies also contained a cannabis extract, suggests Mr Bennett, who
quotes scholars to back his claims.

There can be little doubt about a role for cannabis in Judaic religion, Carl Ruck, 
professor
of classical mythology at Boston University said.

Referring to the existence of cannabis in anointing oils used in ceremonies, he added:
Obviously the easy availability and long- established tradition of cannabis in early 
Judaism...
would inevitably have included it in the [Christian] mixtures.

Mr Bennett suggests those anointed with the oils used by Jesus were literally 
drenched in
this potent mixture... Although most modern people choose to smoke or eat pot, when its
active ingredients are transferred into an oil-based carrier, it can also be absorbed 
through
the skin.

Quoting the New Testament, Mr Bennett argues that Jesus anointed his disciples with the
oil and encouraged them to do the same with other followers. This could have been
responsible for healing eye and skin diseases referred to in the Gospels.

If cannabis was one of the main ingredients of the ancient anointing oil... and 
receiving this
oil is what made Jesus the Christ and his followers Christians, then persecuting those 
who
use cannabis could be considered anti-Christ, Mr Bennett concludes.

We kill our rebels the Israeli way, says Russia

The Russian army has switched tactics in combating Chechen separatist rebels and is now
using the Israeli method to eliminate them, the Defence Minister, Sergei Ivanov, said
yesterday.

The tactics of the federal forces have changed. It is now a precise operation during 
which
we kill those who ought to be killed, Mr Ivanov was quoted by Russian news agencies as
saying.

We use the wholly Israeli method when we know the exact composition of a cell, and we 
do
not let go until the entire cell has been eliminated.

If there is a cell of 10 people and we have eliminated nine out of the 10, we will 
pursue the
10th until his elimination.

Russian forces have been accused by human rights groups of carrying out arbitrary 
arrests
and summary executions as troops try to stamp out separatist resistance in Chechnya.

Obviously, it is we who control the situation but it cannot be said that there will 
be no further
attacks in the future, Mr Ivanov said.

There would be no large withdrawal of Russian troops from the breakaway southern 
republic
in 2003, he added.

Meanwhile in London, a Chechen rebel envoy, Akhmed Zakayev, said he feared for his 
life if
Russian authorities win their bid on
Thursday to extradite him from Britain to face charges of waging war and murder.

Zakayev told BBC television there was no chance of him getting a fair trial in Russia.

There are several representatives of Chechnya who found themselves in the hands of the
Russian authorities. Some of them disappeared without trace, without trial, he said.

Those who were tried ... would be sent to prison or to a camp or disappear ... and I 
think
the same fate would await me.

Russia charges the Chechen former actor and one-time fighter with waging war against it
and involvement in a series of alleged murders and abductions - charges he denies.

Zakayev said Chechnya's rebel leadership was not involved in a bomb attack on the pro-
Russian Chechen Government headquarters in Grozny last month or in a Moscow theatre
hostage siege in October.

Zakayev expects Britain to reach the same conclusion on his extradition as Denmark, 
which
freed him last month, saying Russia had presented insufficient evidence to extradite 
him.

Nationalism vs. Patriotism

Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does NOT mean to stand by the President 
or any other public official save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by 
the country. It is patriotic to support him insofar as he efficiently serves the 
country. It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency 
or otherwise he fails in his duty to stand by the country.

Ever since September 11, 2001 we have seen folks clamoring for war. How ironic that 
the vast majority of these war advocates who encourage and defend the federal 
government claim the cloak of 'Patriotism' for their efforts. If it is simply loyalty 
and support for the central government that is the axle upon which their wheels turn, 
I would say they aren't Patriots, but Nationalists. There is a difference.

I read a quote once where a historian said, Patriotism is the love of a land and its 
people, Nationalism is the love of a government. While not exact definitions, they do 
represent a very real difference in how many Americans are viewing events going on 
today in America.

Patriotism is more than just love and loyalty to one's land and people. In this land, 
it is love, respect and loyalty to the Constitution. If one is cheering on the feds, 
and that cheering is for actions that are clearly outside of their role as laid out in 
the Constitution, then one is a Nationalist, not a Patriot. This is what neo-cons do. 
As I've written before, neo-cons aren't really conservatives, but merely socialists 
who've fallen in love with capitalism and have a token respect for traditional social 
values.

The problem here with Nationalists is that they, like the neo-cons, are happy with 
whatever the federals do, as long as it is their guy in charge of the 
ever-centralizing federal government. The federal government is only considered too 
big or oppressive when the 'other side' is in control. That is really a moot point 
today, as there isn't a whole lot of difference between the Republicans and Democrats.

Patriots stand on principle, and on the Constitution. Some would call them strict 
constructionists. Under this view, sometimes you get your way, sometimes you don't, 
but if we are to be a nation that follows the rule of law, not the rule of men, then 
the Constitution, with all its limits on government, must come first. Patriots are 
very few today. In fact, about the only Patriot serving in elected office at the 
national level today is Congressman Ron Paul from Texas.

I've read articles over the last year where people gave jaded, and sometimes 
outrageous, justifications for blindly waving the American flag and sending our youth 
off to war. I saw where one writer, explaining why pro-South organizations should 
support war, said the Southern tradition of arms, and the many Southerners who proudly 
serve in the U.S. military should be supported, as if that was enough reason to go to 
war. I'd like to point out that with the formation of the Confederate States of 
America, president Jefferson Davis said that the Confederate States only wished to be 
left alone in peace. Hardly a ringing endorsement for military intervention overseas. 
Looking historically at wars in which Southerners have been engaged, overwhelmingly 
[including the War Between the States] it has been a matter of self-defense, not overt 
aggression. President Bush's 'you are with us or against us' attitude unfortunately 
has left no room for neutrality, and puts a large segment of the
 world
 on the defensive against U.S. aggression.

Another article was almost comical in embracing war by touting John Brown as a 
Christian martyr on the side of righteousness. It is a stretch, to say the least, to 
grab a seriously mentally disturbed man who had more in common with Al Qaeda 
terrorists than true Christian principles and present him as some kind of saint. John 
Brown was better known for murdering innocent men, women and children, than for 
freeing any slaves. His actions were not only unconstitutional, they were clearly 
unbiblical. God save us from the deranged individuals who hold the likes of this 
murdering wacko up as an example of how to conduct our lives. And what Brown's actions 
had to do with honoring the military is beyond me, as it was the military which 
captured this mad man, and handed him over to civilian courts for a much-deserved 
hanging. [As for John Brown's eternal fate, that is a matter for the Almighty, whom I 
am sure can look with mercy on even the most addlebrained of poor souls, including an

ocates for Brown's sainthood.]

All this is not to say there aren't times when war is necessary. The problem is that 
the central government has a tendency to be less than forthcoming in its arguments for 
war, as if they don't trust the American people with the truth. Personally,

New Senate Leader Spells Trouble For Conservative Agenda

What should conservatives expect now that Senator Bill Frist has officially become the 
new Senate Majority Leader? Here is a summary of Frist's record on a variety of key 
issues.

Abortion: Bill Frist is not pro-life. That is the declaration of Judie Brown, 
president and co-founder of American Life League. Brown further stated, He's made all 
kinds of strange statements and is a shareholder in a huge for-profit hospital company 
that does abortions.

Further muddying his pro-life commitment is the fact that Frist aggressively promoted 
President Bill Clinton's nominee David Satcher as Surgeon General. Satcher is a rabid 
pro-abortion advocate and a man who has personally performed abortions.

Frist also joined Democrat Charles Schumer in voting for the 2002 bankruptcy bill that 
blocked peaceful, pro-life protesters from filing bankruptcy to void large cash 
judgments awarded to abortion clinic owners. He is also on record as stating he does 
not believe that abortion should be outlawed.

Bill Frist has proven that he is not averse to joining forces with pro-abortion 
liberals against pro-life advocates, nor is he averse to receiving financial gain from 
the killing of unborn children. Furthermore, he is more than willing to promote and 
endorse radical, pro-abortionists for high public office. It is certain that Frist 
would oppose any effort to overturn Roe v Wade.

Gun Control: Gun Owners of America gives Frist a 'D' for his Senate record on gun 
control issues. According to GOA, Frist helped kill the filibuster on the Shays-Meehan 
Incumbent Protection bill, a sham 'campaign finance reform' measure which squelches 
the voice of pro-gun organizations.

Frist also voted against the Smith filibuster and in favor of sending the 
Gore-Lautenberg anti-gun crime bill to a House-Senate conference committee. GOA also 
says Frist is one of the Republicans who betrayed gun owners and voted for the 
anti-gun crime bill.

Other anti-gun measures supported by Frist include government wiretapping of innocent 
citizens and gun owners, the anti-gun terror bill, the Lautenberg Domestic 
Confiscation Gun Ban, and the Kohl Gun Free Zones Ban.

Immigration: Senator Frist receives consistently low marks from conservatives who 
closely monitor the immigration issue. He has voted against curbing illegal 
immigration, has supported granting amnesty to illegal aliens, and has supported the 
so-called 'guest worker' program, which encourages Mexican residents to obtain work in 
the United States.

These and other issues mean that Bill Frist's position as Senate Majority Leader can 
only spell trouble for the conservative agenda.

A man who tried to shoot Edward VIII was in contact with MI5 and might have been the 
stooge of Austrian communists posing as Nazis.

The dramatic assassination attempt was foiled by a bystander and police officers, who 
knocked the gun from George McMahon's hand as he levelled it at the King during a 
procession in London on July 16 1936.

Ironically - in light of Edward VIII's contacts with the Third Reich - McMahon claimed 
to have been set up by Nazi agents who offered him #163;150 to assassinate the King.

The Irish journalist said that he had been approached by agents who had discussed the 
injustices in Ireland and suggested he could help.

He also claimed that he had never intended to fire the pistol, and had informed MI5 of 
the plot.

Despite testimony that he had fascist sympathies, officials concluded that he was a 
liar who had invented the plot to gain attention.

However, newly released documents show that McMahon's solicitor established that he 
had indeed been in touch with an MI5 agent. The police also overlooked his friendship 
with an Austrian emigre, whose close friends included a communist party member who was 
later investigated by MI5 following espionage activities at a London arsenal. It 
raises the possibility that communists could have posed as Nazis to win over McMahon 
for their own ends.

He was sentenced to 12 months hard labour for wilfully producing a revolver near to 
the person of the King with intent to alarm His Majesty, after the judge said that he 
had not intended to kill the King.

Edward VIII is perhaps best remembered today for his suspected Nazi sympathies and the
abdication crisis that brought a sudden end to his short reign. It is now long 
forgotten that
his time on the throne might have been even briefer had an incident on July 16 1936 
had a
more sinister outcome. Now, 67 years later, new research and the belated release to the
public record office of one of the previously closed files on the affair raises new 
questions
about what actually occurred that day and why.

The morning of July 16 was sunny and the crowds lining Constitution Hill were three to 
four
deep. Like many in the crowd, Alice Lawrence had been waiting patiently for a glimpse 
of the
king's procession as it returned to Buckingham Palace from a colours ceremony in Hyde
Park.

Waiting for a sign that the parade was on its way, those around her had their eyes 
trained on
Wellington Arch - apart from one short, stocky man in a well-worn, brown suit to her
immediate left, who every so often turned to look over his shoulder towards the 
railings of
Green Park. It was there, earlier on, that she had first noticed him talking intently 
to a tall
well-dressed man with a moustache and hat.

At around 12.25 the sound of distant cheering told the crowd that the king had left 
Hyde
Park and was only a few minutes away. The man in the brown suit was now gazing at
something in his left hand and tapping his thigh with the newspaper he held in the 
other. At
12.30 the military band leading the parade emerged from Wellington Arch as rippled
applause and cheering broke out at the top of Constitution Hill. Following close 
behind was
the king on horseback, in full-dress scarlet tunic and bearskin. As the king's horse 
passed
Mrs Lawrence, the man's newspaper fell to the ground, revealing a revolver, which he 
raised
and levelled at the king. Without thinking, Mrs Lawrence instinctively grabbed his arm 
and
cried out. Alerted by the cry, Special Constable Anthony Dick, who was a few feet away,
spun around and seeing the revolver struck the man's lower arm with his fist, causing 
the
gun to fly out of his hand and into the roadway.

The man, identified as George Andrew McMahon, was taken to Hyde Park Police Station,
where he was cautioned by Chief Inspector Sands of Scotland Yard. During the car 
journey
McMahon had told Sands that he had no intention of harming the king, and only did it 
as a
protest. A body search yielded an envelope containing a picture postcard of the king 
along
with two rounds of ammunition for his revolver, and the newspaper he had dropped. On
examination, the words, May I Love You were found pencilled on the back page.

One of the first telegrams Edward received that afternoon on his safe return to 
Buckingham
Palace was from Adolph Hitler, who told him: I have just received the news of the
abominable attempt on the life of your Majesty, and send my heartiest congratulations 
on
your escape.

Although McMahon made no further statements that day, and only cursory inquiries by the
police had been made, the king was told that evening that Scotland Yard had, 
unravelled
the mystery. McMahon, he was informed, was, a frustrated Irish journalist who had
convinced himself that the secretary of state for home affairs had conspired to 
prevent him
from publishing a journal called the Human Gazette. His action was apparently not an
attempt to harm the king, but to publicise this perceived injustice. Had the Yard 
really
unravelled the mystery or merely rushed to judgment?

Special Branch later established that McMahon's real name was Jerome Bannigan and that
he was suspected to have Nazi sympathies. Several members of the public later came
forward to confirm that they had seen McMahon selling the fascist newspaper the Black 
Shirt
in the Paddington area. When McMahon finally appeared at the Old Bailey in September, 
he
gave a detailed account of what he maintained was behind the incident. According to 
him he
had been approached in October the previous year by an English intermediary who
introduced him to representatives of a foreign power outside their embassy. A further
meeting took place at which they discussed the injustices in Ireland and suggested 
that he
could help their cause. McMahon maintained that he had reported this to MI5 and then 
kept
in touch with them. Some months later, not long after the death of George V, it was 
first
suggested by those he had met in October that he become involved in an assassination
attempt on the new King Edward. McMahon maintained that he never had any intention of
doing the king any harm and was merely going through the motions while informing MI5
about the plot.
