Some 59% of Europeans replied 'yes' when asked whether or not Israel presents a threat to peace in the world, said the Eurobarometer survey, presented by the Brussels commission. Israel reacted to the poll even before it was formally released -after the Spanish daily El Pais published leaked details from it last week - saying it is proof that anti-Semitism lies behind political criticism of Israel. "The European Union, which shows sensitivity on human rights issues, would do well to stop the rampant brainwashing against and demonizing of Israel before Europe deteriorates once again to dark sections of its past," said Israeli diaspora affairs minister Nathan Sharansky. The European Commission said Israel's reaction is "legitimate", but otherwise refused any further comment on the poll results, beyond repeating that EU policies are not affected by such poll findings. "I think the reaction was a very legitimate reaction," said spokesman Gerassimos Thomas, while adding: "It is not our task to interpret each and every survey." The Israeli ambassador to Italy - which currently holds the EU presidency - said in an interview with the daily Il Messagero that the poll could have significant diplomatic consequences. Such furious tremors are due to the results of a poll, which the European Commission has been accused of suppressing or, at least, delaying due to its unfavourable outcome on Israel.The poll conducted last month by Taylor Nelson Sofres/EOS Gallup of Europe on behalf of the Commission, shows that 59 per cent of some 7,500 Europeans polled throughout 15 EU-member countries believe that Israel presents the greatest threat to world peace. Neither North Korea nor Iran, those countries both Israel and the US seek to portray as "evil" but America's favoured ally the Jewish state. What's the betting if Pyongyang, Tehran or Damascus had toppled Tel Aviv from its perch, the Commission wouldn't have been so reticent to publish its findings?It didn't take long for cries of "anti-Semitism" to spring forth from the Israeli government via Natan Sharansky, Minister for Diaspora and Jerusalem Affairs, who said: "Just like in the past when the Jew was blamed for all the problems of the world, the 'enlightened' world today uses that same claim about the Jewish state." The Simon Wiesenthal Centre is asking its sympathisers to sign a petition addressed to the President of the European Commission demanding because Europe has showed its "blatant bias" it should bow out of Mid-East peace process.What peace process? Would that be the defunct Oslo, the Quartet's "road to nowhere", or the behind-closed-doors Geneva Accord? There currently isn't one and this is, no doubt, one of the reasons Europeans view a militarised occupying state which prefers guns, tanks and missiles to dialogue as a dangerous entity.Is it anti-Semitism (an emotionally over-loaded word for racism directed at Jews) to view with askance a nuclear power, led by a ruthless warmonger, illegally occupying swathes of land, contemptuously ignoring numerous UN resolutions, and in the process of packing a nation within its borders into a giant poverty-stricken ghetto? Is it anti-Semitism to be fearful of a country, which has 200-plus nuclear missiles pointed at its neighbours; which has invaded and occupied one of them for decades (Lebanon), and has recently launched an unprovoked attack on another (Syria), not to mention owning a fleet of nuclear submarines which ominously patrol the region's waters?Superpower dancingIs it anti-Semitism to view with suspicion an aggressive entity which appears to have the superpower dancing to its every tune? This is a state which can do no wrong in the eyes of the Bush administration and Congress. This is a state, which can send its missiles to devastate heavily populated areas with impunity. It can carry out targeted assassinations with ne'er a raised eyebrow and leave thousands homeless, refuse building permissions and divert water supplies to such settlers even its own courts deem "illegal". All of these crimes it commits in the name of "security". And instead of brickbats from the US it receives billions of dollars in aid. Israel apparently believes that it is and has been attempting to redefine the term "anti-Semitism" to include any of its detractors, saying that of any criticism is an attack on its very survival.So if the world were to go along with this skewed logic, what could be the outcome? First, Israel has never shied away from initiating pre-emptive strikes, as we saw in 1967 when it launched a surprise attack on Egypt and, again, in 1981 when it took out Iraq's Osirak nuclear facility. Its bombing of an allegedly disused militant training camp near Damascus recently shows that its "survival" paradigm hasn't changed. Therefore, if Israel should choose to pre-emptively strike any country it considers a threat, with whatever means at its disposal, those who would subsequently condemn such a move would automatically be "anti-Semitic". Have you ever heard such poppycock in your life?The former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammed recently said in defence of his keynote speech to the OIC conference: "Are the Jews some kind of creatures who cannot be condemned in any way?" Other Jewish executives have either been arrested in Russia, or have had their movements restricted there. It was reported last week that Yukos shareholder Leonid Nevzlin had been resident in Israel for several weeks, and had submitted a request for Israeli citizenship. Several other Yukos senior executives joined Nevzlin last week, including Vladimir Dubov. Vasily Shaknovsky did not manage to leave Russia. On the basis of informed Russian sources, The Wall Street Journal reported today that Yukos controlling shareholder and CEO Mikhail Khodorkovsky, arrested 10 days ago in Russian on suspicion of fraud and tax violations, last week transferred the voting rights to most of his Yukos shares to Nevzlin. Nevzlin himself owns 10-15% of Yukos. At current market value, his shares are worth 83-124 billion rubles ($2.75-4 billion). Today, Mikhail Khodorkovsky announced his resignation as Yukos CEO, saying he was sure that there were suitable people in the company who would replace him. It is believed that one of the comany executives who have fled to Israel may take the vacant CEO position. At the end of last week, the prosecutors froze the 42% of Yukos owned by Khodorkovsky and his partners. Unfreezing the shares is likely to be a lengthy process, but the shares have not been nationalized or confiscated. The prosecution asserts that the freezing of the shares most of which are owned by offshore companies outside Russia, is designed to guarantee the payment of $1 billion in damages, should Khodorkovsky and his colleagues be convicted of fraud and tax evasion. Freezing the shares, however, has prompted concern in Russia and the West that the state might attempt to confiscate the shares. At stake is the control of an oil producer nearly the size of Exxon Mobil Corp. Bush as vice president and, earlier, worked with him closely when he was director of CIA. Mr. McGovern is on the Steering Group of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity. He is now co-director of the Servant Leadership School, an outreach ministry in the inner city of Washington. The killing of 18 U.S. troops and the wounding of 21 others in Iraq on Nov. 2 brings to mind the successful attack by Viet Cong guerrillas on U.S. forces in Pleiku, Vietnam on February 7, 1965. The Johnson administration immediately seized on that attack, in which nine U.S. troops were killed and 128 wounded, to start bombing North Vietnam and to send 3,500 Marines to South Vietnam. Unlike the U.S. advisory forces already in country, the Marines had orders to engage in combat, marking the beginning of the Americanization of the war. By 1968 U.S. forces had grown to over 536,000. From the outset, my colleagues in CIA were highly skeptical that even with a half-million troops the United States could prevail in Vietnam. They were quick to remind anyone who would listen of the candid observation made by General Philippe LeClerc, dispatched to Vietnam shortly after World War II. The French general reported that, mainly because of the strong commitment of the Vietnamese nationalists/communists and their proven proficiency in guerrilla war, a renewed French campaign would require 500,000 men and that, even then, France could not win. In 1965, similar warnings were blissfully ignored by Defense Secretary Robert McNamara and the civilian whiz kids with whom he had surrounded himself. Then as now, the advice of our professional military was dismissed. Civilian Whiz Kids vs. Military Professionals While today's civilian leaders at the Defense Department hobbled through what passed for post-war planning for Iraq early this year, Army Chief of Staff Eric Shinseki warned the Senate Armed Services Committee that post-war Iraq would require "something on the order of several hundred thousand soldiers." He was immediately ridiculed by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his deputy, Paul Wolfowitz for having exaggerated the requirement. This evokes vivid memories of how McNamara and his civilian whiz kids dismissed our professional militaryand at such a high eventual price. The poet George Santayana warned, "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." What is increasingly clear is that neither the present-day Pentagon whiz kids nor their patron, Vice President Dick Cheney, have learned much from history. They encourage President Bush to insist, "We are not leaving;" and Defense Secretary Rumsfeld to protest that this war is "winnable." But most of those with a modicum of experience in guerrilla warfare and the Middle East are persuaded that the war is not winnable and that the only thing in doubt is the timing of the U.S. departure. After many weeks of refusing to admit the word "guerrilla" into evidence, Rumsfeld seems to have made his peace with it. Yet, when asked this past weekend on television who are the guerrillas are, he foundered, admitting in so many words that he hasn't a clue. I was actually embarrassed for him. A terrific debater and otherwise reasonably smart man, Rumsfeld was reduced to telling us once again that Iraq is the size of California and bemoaning the deficiencies in "situational awareness" and lack of "perfect visibility" into who it is that are killing our troops. At least we were spared the usual claims that we are "moving forward" and will prevail "at the end of the day." Apparently even Rumsfeld could see how incongruous such banalities would have sounded after such a disastrous week. Recent sloganeering is eerily reminiscent of a comparable stage in our involvement in Vietnam. We would have to "stay the course."

Title: Op-Ed Columnist: This Cant Go On -Caveat Lector- http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/04/opinion/04KRUG.html?th=pagewanted=printposition= November 4, 2003OP-ED COLUMNIST This Can't Go OnBy PAUL KRUGMAN cademic economists often cite Stein's Law, a principle enunciated by the late Herbert Stein, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers during the Nixon administration. The law comes with various wordings; my favorite is: "Things that can't go on forever, don't." Believe it or not, that's a useful reminder. For we're now led by men who think that macho posturing makes Stein's Law go away. On issues ranging from budgets to foreign policy, they insist that we can sustain the unsustainable. And when challenged to explain how, they engage in magical thinking. The prime example I have hammered on in this column is, of course, the federal budget. Realistic budget projections say that current policies aren't remotely sustainable. For example, a month ago a joint report of the Committee for Economic Development (a business group), the bipartisan Concord Coalition and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities concluded that under current policies, federal debt would rise by $5 trillion over the next decade. And then baby boomers will start collecting benefits, and our debt will really explode. Such explosive growth in debt can't go on forever, and it won't. Yet our current leaders and their apologists insist that the problem will magically solve itself. Last year's deficit came in slightly below forecasts, and we've had one quarter of good economic growth see, we'll grow out of the deficit! But we won't, and there will eventually be a day of reckoning. As Bill Gross of Pimco, the giant bond manager, says, "Sooner, perhaps later, our Asian creditors will wake up and smell the coffee." (Yes, the federal budget and the value of the dollar now depend on huge purchases of Treasury bills by the governments of Japan and China.) When they do, he predicts "higher import costs, a cutback in spending on cheap foreign goods, rising inflation, perhaps chaotic financial markets, a lower standard of living." Something to look forward to. But the day of reckoning seems closer on a different front. Some Americans may share the views of the Republican congressman who said that progress in Iraq was "a better and more important story than losing a couple of soldiers every day." (Support the troops!) But whether or not you think troop losses are important, there's growing evidence that our Iraq strategy is unsustainable. The immediate issue is manpower. Some politicians are calling for a bigger force in Iraq but even our current force levels can't be maintained. In September the Congressional Budget Office analyzed how many U.S. soldiers could be kept in Iraq without extending tours beyond one year. The conclusion was that force levels would have to start dropping rapidly about five months from now, and that the forces in Iraq and Kuwait would eventually have to shrink by almost two-thirds. As the report explains, the Pentagon can use various expedients to maintain a larger force in Iraq, but all of these expedients would threaten to undermine our military readiness. At a broader level, the accelerating pace at which Americans are being killed and wounded and the strains of occupation duties clearly pose difficulties for recruitment in a volunteer military. And at a still broader level, public support for this war whose original rationale has turned out to be a mirage, if not a deliberate deception will wilt if losses go on at this rate, no matter how tough the president talks. For sure, good things are happening in Iraq. But are we making the kind of progress that would allow us to withdraw large numbers of soldiers, and greatly reduce casualties, in the fairly near future? That's a hard case to make. Yet we keep expecting a magic solution. We'll get European, Indian and Pakistani forces to help us! But since we went to war without international support, they're not interested. We'll bring in the Turks! But the Iraqi Governing Council itself is bitterly opposed. We'll engage in "Iraqification," creating local forces that take the place of American troops! Let's hope that works but hope is not a plan. Just as the federal government is in no immediate danger of running out of money, our forces in Iraq are in no danger of outright defeat. But in both cases, current policies appear to be unsustainable: we

Patrick Coolican Seattle Times staff reporter A charity fund-raiser for Seattle Hebrew Academy and two local arts groups, which brought former President Clinton to town, was a financial bust though not for the 42nd president. The September event at Marion McCaw Hall cost organizers $290,000 but brought in just $288,000, according to organizers a shortfall of $2,000 sponsors blamed on sluggish ticket sales. It's not known how much Clinton was paid, but he did charge for his Seattle appearance, according to his office. Neither his spokeswoman nor Foolproof Performing Arts, which produced the event, are talking about his fee. But in 2002, he charged no less than $100,000 for all but one of his speaking appearances, earning $9.5 million for the year, according to Sen. Hillary Clinton's personal financial disclosure form filed in May. When organizers realized they would have about 800 unsold tickets to the Sept. 16 event, they gave them away to community groups. The Schultz Family Foundation, an event co-sponsor, salvaged the night for the Seattle Hebrew Academy one of the three beneficiaries by pledging $20,000 to the school beginning in 2004, according to the foundation. The academy has raised $7 million of its $8.6 million goal to repair damage sustained during the 2001 Nisqually earthquake. But Clinton's visit made no money for either the Seattle Center Academy or Foolproof Performing Arts. "There was a sense of history that night. But translating history into cold, hard cash is not always easy," said Marilyn Raichle, director of Foolproof, the event's main organizer. Although it didn't raise money, the event gave many students a chance to see Clinton for free and raised awareness of Foolproof and its "American Voices" speaker series, Raichle said. A Seattle Center Academy spokeswoman said the school was happy to get 120 free tickets for young people to hear Clinton, despite the fund-raising failure. "Some events raise money, and some don't. That's just the way it works," the academy's Sherrie Boyer said. Slow ticket sales were the biggest obstacle to breaking even, Raichle said. Foolproof sold 2,054 tickets, ranging from $35 to $2,500 for a private dinner with Clinton, who later spoke at the opera house for more than an hour about creating an integrated global community. That left hundreds of unsold tickets, which Foolproof gave away, mostly to students. Raichle blamed competing events and said many people chose to give to the charities privately rather than attend the speech. The event also had significant expenses, however. In addition to Clinton's undisclosed fee, production costs as well as advertising and catering each cost between $20,000 and $30,000; other money paid for transportation, stagehands and security, graphic design and printing, Raichle said. Over the last several days there have been demonstrations of thousands of workers and trade union activists in Belgrade demanding that the pro-NATO government step down. The government then ordered vicious police attacks on the protesting workers, who call for an end to privatization of state companies. This comes in the wake of the Western takeover of the Serbian economy following the ouster of Milosevic three years ago. The ICDSM-US comprises a team of more than two dozen writers, academics, attorneys and peace and human rights activists, all of them long and prominently associated with the issue of Yugoslavia and now determined to win the freedom of the imprisoned President. The ICDSM-US also sees Milosevic's defense as part of the struggle of the people of Serbia and of the former Yugoslavia to resist being turned into a colony of the West and that is why we consider this defense important. ON THE NON-NOMINATION OF 1944 The Geometry of The Henry Wallace Nomination by Lyndon H. LaRouche, Jr. October 18, 2003 The reason for the British-led campaign to prevent Henry A. Wallace's Summer 1944 Democratic Party nomination for a second term as President Franklin Roosevelt's Vice-President, was solely that Wallace was determined to continue the policies of a Franklin D. Roosevelt who was not expected to live out a fourth term as President. For that reason, and that reason alone, the Senator Harry S Truman whose views were acceptable to the British monarchy, was nominated to replace Wallace on that ticket. The physical universe in which both the British empiricist and our leading patriots have dwelt is the same; but, the way the mind sees, and reacts to that physical universe is different. It is qualitatively different in certain crucial aspects. The two compared mind-sets represent intersecting, but axiomatically different physical geometries. The British mind-set's geometry is essentially that of Aristotle and Euclid, as reflected in the cases of Descartes and the followers David Hume, Hume's follower Immanuel Kant, Lord Shelburne's propagandist Adam Smith, Jeremy Bentham, and the radical empiricist Bertrand Russell. The founders of the U.S.A. were influenced by a contrary geometry, that of the followers of the pre-Euclidean constructive geometry of the Pythagoreans and Plato; this was the Classical tradition as imparted to the circles of Benjamin Franklin by, most immediately, the followers of Gottfried Leibniz on the European continent. For example, the British mind-set is reflected in the Preamble of the Constitution of the Confederate States of America, in John Locke's doctrine of "property"; the U.S. Declaration of Independence was based axiomatically on Leibniz's explicitly anti-Locke conception "the pursuit of happiness," as this is echoed as the principles of sovereignty, general welfare, and posterity in the Preamble of the U.S. Federal Constitution. To put a fine political point on that explanation of the roots of the British hostility toward Henry Wallace's 1944 candidacy, the typical British empiricist joins Thomas Huxley and Frederick Engels, in denying any axiomatic principle defining the difference between man and ape; whereas, the American founders' tradition of Plato, Christianity, and Moses Mendelssohn, for example, emphasized an absolute, axiomatic quality of principled difference between the mind of man and the potential of the ape. Ashvin Raman has made a groundbreaking documentary for German television which will be screened on Germany's ARD channel on 12 November. His film includes exclusive footage of Guantanamo Bay, as well as interviews with released detainees and top American officials. More than 600 foreign nationals have been detained without charge or access to lawyers and family members in the US naval base since November 2001. The US has refused to recognise them as prisoners of war, or allow their status to be determined by a tribunal as required under the Geneva Conventions. Raman, who presented a paper on Guantanamo to the European Parliament in September, said the camp is just a showpiece for the American people. It is there so that Bush can tell them that he is doing something about terrorism. But you just can't keep people locked up for such a long time without charge or having access to lawyers. Inhumane conditions Indian-born Raman said conditions inside the camp have not improved much since it opened. Things have only cosmetically improved. The fact is that if you are being held in solitary confinement in a cell that is five metres squared then that is not good. Don't forget, in the last few months 32 prisoners have tried to commit suicide. He added: The released prisoners that I spoke to just couldn't believe they had to spend a year of their lives there in the first place. After the American war on Afghanistan in 2001, about 660 people from 42 countries were sent to Guantanamo Bay for interrogation. The detainees were taken to a place outside US territory to minimise the application of legal constraints that might otherwise apply. The Guantanamo prisoners are in legal limbo Enemy combatants The Americans say the Guantanamo detainees are being treated humanely and receive good food, excellent medical care, and the opportunity to worship. However, the US considers them as enemy combatants, which means they are outside the normal legal framework and can be held indefinitely without trial or access to lawyers. Washington says it cannot treat the detainees as normal criminals because of their alleged links to Usama Bin Ladin's al-Qaida network. Neither are they regarded as prisoners of war under the Geneva conventions, because they were not members of the regular Afghan armed forces. The Pentagon has announced that six Guantanamo prisoners are likely to be tried by military tribunals. The defendants may face prosecution on a number of charges, including violations of the laws of war. Depending on the particular charges, the death penalty may come into force. Diebold Inc. sent cease and desist letters after the documents and internal e-mails, allegedly stolen by a hacker, were distributed on the Internet. Recipients of the letters included computer programmers, students at colleges including Swarthmore and at least one Internet provider. Most of the 13,000 pages of documents are little more than banal employee e-mails, routine software manuals and old voter record files. But several items appear to raise security concerns. Diebold refused to discuss the documents' contents. Company spokesman Mike Jacobsen said the fact that the company sent the cease-and-desist letters does not mean the documents are authentic - or give credence to advocates who claim lax Diebold security could allow hackers to rig machines. We're cautioning anyone from drawing wrong or incomplete conclusions about any of those documents or files purporting to be authentic, Jacobsen said. But the activists say the mere fact that Diebold was hacked shows that the company's technology cannot be trusted. These legal threats are an acknowledgment of the horrific security risks of electronic voting, said Sacramento-based programmer Jim March, who received a cease and desist order last month but continues to publish the documents on his personal Web site. In one series of e-mails, a senior engineer dismisses concern from a lower-level programmer who questions why the company lacked certification for a customized operating system used in touch-screen voting machines. The Federal Election Commission requires voting software to be certified by an independent research lab. In another e-mail, a Diebold executive scolded programmers for leaving software files on an Internet site without password protection. This potentially gives the software away to whomever wants it, the manager wrote in the e-mail. March contends the public has a right to know about Diebold security problems. The cease-and-desist orders are like a drug dealer saying, 'Hey, cop, give me back my crack.' It's an incredible tactical blunder, he said. The documents began appearing online in August, six months after a hacker broke into the North Canton, Ohio-based company's servers using an employee's ID number, Jacobsen said. The hacker copied company announcements, software bulletins and internal e-mails dating back to January 1999, Jacobsen said. A day after a chilly reception at the United Nations last month, President Bush received a warmer greeting from a New York group that he had been keeping at arm's length: about a dozen leaders of the biggest firms on Wall Street. That private meeting at the Waldorf-Astoria, to discuss the economy, is just one illustration of how the president and Wall Street seem to have grown on each other. Two weeks before he was sworn into office, Mr. Bush held a business leaders forum in Texas with dozens of prominent executives, but with no chief executive from Wall Street. Likewise, such executives were absent from his economic summit in Waco, Tex., in August 2002. There was some `we're from Texas, we're not from Wall Street,' said Senator Jon Corzine of New Jersey, a Democrat who served as co-chairman at Goldman Sachs before taking office. To their credit, they've moved away from that. After winning Congressional approval for cuts in taxes on dividends, capital gains and for certain business investments, and after navigating a raft of corporate accounting scandals that shook the investment community, President Bush seems to have won over many financial executives, who are now strongly supporting his re-election campaign. A study to be released today shows that the financial community has surpassed all other groups, including lawyers and lobbyists, as the top industry among Mr. Bush's elite fund-raisers. The list of those generating $100,000 and $200,000 now includes chief executives like Henry M. Paulson of Goldman Sachs, John J. Mack of Credit Suisse First Boston and Stanley O'Neal of Merrill Lynch, whose firm has already raised twice the amount for Mr. Bush's re-election that it did during the entire 2000 campaign cycle. It's a pro-investor policy. Although supposedly hundred of years old, the handwriting looked remarkably modern, supporting Goldbug's theory the manuscript was crafted after WWII as a rabbit trail. Otherwise, GW would be in jail already or at least facing impeachment. What news stations do you listen to? What TV stations? I note that you are willing to consider the supposed video footage of the Pentagon attack, although it a) was released by someone at the Pentagon itself, b) is time-stamped Sept. 12, 2001, c) consists only of five stills that show evidence of manipulation (shadows with borders, explosion engulfs a control tower that it could not have possibly reached, etc.), d) was released in direct response to the sudden popularity of Hunt the Boeing. So you're taking your lead from what the Pentagon is willing to release? Given the suppression of other videos and photos known to exist, I would automatically discount these five stills, even more so than the words of Bush. I note that you missed my statement, on the 911truthalliance list, that the date of September 12 on the film that is alleged to be film of the Pentagon crash on SEPTEMBER 11 is indicative of one of two things: either a) the date was changed to discredit the IMAGE, which would make the image probably real or b) the image was invented, something totally unnecessary if a BOEING 757 hit the Pentagon. I asked the list for feed back on this matter and got none actually. I would also like to note that I am not taking my lead from these images and I have NEVER stated such. I would be mightily impressed if ANYONE were to produced undoctored statements to the contrary, written by myself, with their technical skills of course. I took my lead from someone in the intelligence community and not until two years later was I able to come to a conclusion as to whether or not he actually worked intelligence. It was when I started looking at Operation Two Towers through Mitre sunglasses. The leads that have popped up are comparable to the leads seen in other veins of 9-11 investigation when one considers that the volume of what is available on the, say, NINETEEN ARAB HIJACKERS theory has been contributed to by thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of researchers. Little old me has come up with an alternative explanation that is rather a sizeable body of research now. It would take months to sort through all of what I have researched so you see that it is compendious. I could use help exploring some connections to NIMA and Booz, Allen, Hamilton but, alas, everyone that is doing such research is, apparently, not communicating with me. I have to educate nearly everyone that contacts me on the Global Hawk theory and this indicates that I am at the head of research in this vein of 9-11 investigations, largely. By Eric Kraus Emboldened by their historic propaganda success -- the creation ex nihilo of a justification for the U.S. invasion of Iraq completely unsanctioned by international law -- members of the dangerous Washington faction with deep links to the security services and the military-industrial complex, the dread Bushoviki, have identified a new terrorist threat: President Vladimir Putin. The means they are now deploying are strikingly similar: planted intelligence, manipulation of public opinion by tame journalists and nonprofit foundations, as well as the insidious repetition of evident lies on the assumption that at least something will stick. In a recent op-ed piece in the increasingly reactionary Washington Post, Bruce Jackson, president of the innocuous sounding Project on Transitional Democracies, accuses Putin not just of re-establishing a tsarist state, but of the supreme crime of opposing U.S. political and economic interests in Russia's historic sphere of influence: the CIS. After long service in the weapons trade (Lockheed, Martin), Jackson is now a hatchet-man for the Bush administration. A member of the far-right Project of the New American Century, he serves with the likes of Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle and Donald Rumsfeld. Jackson was instrumental in rounding up support for the Iraq war with a stealth attack, corralling East European presidents into signing the notorious letter of the Vilnius 10. All is fair in love and (propaganda) war. In a crass insult to the world's Jews, Jackson deploys one of the most cynical foreign policy ploys of the Bushoviki: the callous exploitation of anti-Semitism, demeaning the sufferings of the Jewish people by reducing the term anti-Semitism to an epithet for any regime inimical to U.S. interests. Jackson notes that three of the business magnates who came to a sticky end are Jewish, but neglects to mention that so were six of the original seven oligarchs, as well as 90 percent of those who currently qualify for the oligarch title. Given the ratios, the real surprise would have been if the fallen angels had been, say, Orthodox Hindus. Nowhere, of course, does Jackson mention the dozens of Russian Jewish businessmen currently building their businesses, attracting foreign partners, and enjoying all the good things that Russia's resurrection has brought. It is ironic that of the spinmeisters warning of the anti-Semitic threat coming from Russia not one, to my knowledge, is a Jew. Mikhail Khodorkovsky has managed to shake off a profoundly unenviable reputation in a very short time. In fairness, Yukos, acquired for some $300 million in the notorious loans-for-shares auctions and still largely controlled through a cascade of offshore vehicles, has proved to be an absolute star in recent years. But it is Khodorkovsky's generous funding of various U.S. neo-conservative causes, in part through his Open Russia foundation (one of the board members of which is Henry Kissinger, responsible inter alia for the Pinochet coup and the illegal, secret war that devastated Cambodia), that has given him with access to the most reactionary elements of the Bush administration -- Perle, Dick Cheney et al. -- all of whom are now lobbying furiously for the oligarch's interests. What is less clear is why Khodorkovsky was naive enough to share their characteristic misconception that U.S. writ runs across the entire planet, and that support from Washington would solve his increasingly grave problems at home. Certainly, if his U.S. backers convinced him of this, they have done him a major disservice. Yukos was the first Russian company to understand the profound changes brought about by the Putin government: with safety of ownership regardless of past misdeeds and a stable political and economic backdrop, far greater wealth could be built by increasing company valuations than by stripping assets. Emulation of their examples has fueled a historic boom in equity prices. Most of Khodorkovsky's peers thought the concessions demanded in return (payment of taxes and an end to the meddling in politics) were a small price to pay. It is deeply unfortunate that Yukos increasingly sought to build its influence, not just in the oil fields and capital markets, but by buying control of the State Duma. On Thursday, Putin met with the heads of the major investment banks, reassuring them about the future direction of reform. With arch-reformer German Gref smiling at his side, he was uncompromising in his message that he would attack corruption wherever it was found -- be it in the bureaucracy, private sector or Duma -- but that minority Yukos shareholders' interests would be zealously protected. He was forceful, lucid and remarkably well-briefed on market issues. Vitally, Putin reiterated that there was no question of a generalized attack upon the other oligarchs

Tripp's secretly taped conversations with Lewinsky fueled the sex scandal that almost brought down former President Bill Clinton. Tripp transferred to a job at the Pentagon from the White House after news of her tape recordings became public. Tripp sued the Defense Department and the U.S. government for privacy violations, including a charge that officials leaked information that she was interviewing for a job at a lower rank and salary than her old job. Tripp also accused U.S. officials of leaking information from her security clearance. Under the settlement, Tripp will be paid a lump sum of $595,000 and she will receive a retroactive increase in her pay grade which will be used to re-calculate her retirement benefits. In exchange, the lawsuits will be dismissed. "This is a long awaited first step toward holding the government accountable under the Privacy Act," Tripp said in a statement. "The government should never be permitted to use Privacy Act protected information to discredit a political opponent."
