Someone has compared President George Bush to "Baghdad Bob," the inadvertently comical Iraqi information minister who kept insisting Iraq was winning the war even as American tanks gathered outside his office. This came after the president's latest press conference, when he said attacks were increasing in Iraq because the occupation was so successful. In other words, the situation is worse because the situation is better. The more successful we are, the more Americans and Iraqis will die from bombs and ambushes. It was Bill Press, the other half of the TV show with Pat Buchanan, who came up with that wisecrack. The president's handlers are wise to keep him away from news conferences. He doesn't handle them well. At this one, you could see from his facial _expression_ that he was not happy to be there. He was, as most politicians are, defensive and evasive. He absolutely refuses to acknowledge that the people attacking Americans in Iraq are anyone but Saddam loyalists and foreign terrorists. Actually, most of them are probably just Iraqis who resent foreign occupation and the bad behavior of some American troops. If he read newspapers, which he told a TV interviewer that he doesn't, he would know that. Even one of the American officers in Iraq recently slipped up and, in an interview with a journalist, referred to the guerrillas as "freedom fighters." There is scant evidence of any sizable number of foreign terrorists, at least none that secretive American officials have been willing to make public. One guy shot the other day by Iraqis had a Syrian passport, but that doesn't mean he was necessarily a Syrian. People in the terrorist business usually have several passports. And, of course, the president made no mention whatsoever of weapons of mass destruction. During the marketing campaign for the war, he hardly opened his mouth without talking about weapons of mass destruction. He refuses to acknowledge that he made a mistake when he said major combat was over last May. That's what irritates me most about politicians. They're human. They can make mistakes. Why not say so? What's wrong with saying: "Yes, at that time, I thought major combat was over. I knew there would be some resistance, but it's been more deadly and lasted longer than I anticipated." Nobody would hold that against him. But, no, he's perfect. It reminds me of that old joke that says, "We Southerners may not always be right, but, by God, we ain't never wrong." At any rate, now the guerrillas have killed more Americans than the Iraqi army did during that major combat. He keeps repeating that canard that "terrorists hate freedom." Nonsense. There is no terrorist in the world who is a terrorist because he hates freedom. By far, the majority of terrorists are fighting for freedom of some group that doesn't have it. In the case of Iraq, it is freedom from American occupation; with the Irish Republican Army, it was freedom from British rule; with the Palestinians, freedom from Israeli occupation; and so forth. It is absurd to suppose that a human being sitting around suddenly stands up and says: "You know, I hate freedom. I think I'll go blow myself up." What one wants in a president, besides basic honesty, are intelligence and sound judgment. One wants someone who is well-read in history and geography and has experience so that he can properly assess situations and make wise decisions. Sadly, I think that's where the president fails, despite his good intentions. To admit that he relies on his staff to tell him what's going on in the world is to admit that he puts himself in the position of

On the eve of World War I, the French General Staff was convinced victory would go to the attacker, that massed soldiers marching together into battle could overcome technology with courage and elan. German machine guns and artillery swiftly shattered that illusion, along with several hundred thousand young Frenchmen. Today, the United States is engaged in a very similar application of theory and warfare, albeit the opposite of the one the French tried. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld's military is a swift moving, micro-chipped, killing machine, where electronics turns night into day, and satellites and laser guided weapons slice and dice enemy armor and artillery. President George W. Bush called it a revolution, that has shown that an innovative doctrine and high-tech weaponry can shape and then dominate an unconventional conflict. Has it? With the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq under our belt, isn't it time to tote up the bill and separate reality and illusion? On the plus side for the 'revolution, we won. On the minus side, it was hardly a fair fight. In Afghanistan it was the 21st century verses the 12th, and we're not of the tunnel yet. Iraq had a 20th century army, but one hollowed out by a decade of sanctions and with little loyalty to the brutal dictatorship it served. And that war, too, is far from over. Even the final victory in Iraq was not exactly a triumph for the revolution. It wasn't swift moving, light troops that took Baghdad and Basra, but the conventional, tank-heavy U.S. 3rd Infantry Division, and the British 7th Armored Division. In short, the old model army. The latest revolution in warfare, the brainchild of the late Air Force Col., John Boyd, goes by the name transformation and combines high tech and maneuver. Its model was the German Blitzkrieg. But Rumsfeld's New Model Army is discovering that the very instruments which make it so invincible on a conventional battlefield are of little use in the non-conventional war the Bush Administration finds itself embroiled in. As long as the enemy was the Iraqi army, the revolution works just fine. It has done less well against roadside explosives, ambushes, and suicide bombs. Part of the problem is the transformation army itself. The US military looks increasingly like a temp agency on steroids: a massive organization of part-time workers armed with the latest in firepower. Since Sept. 11, 2001, some 292,000 National Guard and reserve troops have been called to active duty, and more than 190,000 are still serving. The Pentagon just announced a further call-up of 30,000. Reserve and National Guard units now make up 46 percent of the military. Reserves have always been an important component of the US military, but they are only supposed to be called up in times of national emergency. From World War I to Gulf War I---75 years--- they were called up nine times. In the last 12 years they have been mobilized 10 times. Normally such troops work behind the front lines and serve for shorter periods than regular troops. However, under transformation, their deployment has been stretched to 12, and sometimes 15 months. And the front line in Iraq and Afghanistan is anyplace a soldier happens to be. The thinking behind all this is simple math: reserve and Guard troops are much cheaper than regular troops. As Christopher Caldwell at the Weekly Standard notes, it is hard not see a similarity between the army's shift to part-time soldiering and businesses preferences for part-time vs full-time labor. Transformation has essentially shifted much of the financial burden for maintaining permanent troops to the families of the reserves. Most joined up for the educational grants and

Military authorities of both countries were drafting plans to combat drugs and develop Thai-Burmese border areas including 20 Wa and Karen villages in Burma opposite Thailand's Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son and Tak provinces, he said. Ethnic minority people in Burma would be taught to grow substitute crops and Thailand would help find the market for their produce. Under the joint drug suppression plan, there would also be coordinated patrol operations. Burmese teams would patrol 20 development villages on their side of the border, while Thai patrol teams do the same in 20 border villages located opposite the Burmese ones. They would work in tandem and keep contact by radio so they could coordinate attacks on border drug factories and traffickers. Burma's increased cooperation with Thailand was putting pressure on border drug gangs, and recently enabled Thai soldiers to seize a cache of 9.7 million speed pills buried in a border area of Tak, said Lt-Gen Picharnmeth. The plan is expected to be approved at the Dec 16-19 Regional Border Committee meeting in Chiang Rai. Shares in the company are still traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange despite the firm being in liquidation since 1952. In a brief statement on Wednesday, IG Farben IL said the firm faced insolvency due to defaults on monies owed to it. The company has in the past blamed legal disagreements with former slave workers for holding up the winding up process. After World War Two, IG Farben's assets were confiscated by the Allies and transferred to chemical giants Hoechst, Bayer and BASF. Towards the end of the war, IG Farben operated a large chemical factory near Nazi death camp Auschwitz, producing among others Zyklon-B poison gas, using slave labourers. The company liquidators has said a 500,000 Deutschmark foundation for former Nazi slave labourers had been established. The current IG Farben IL derives most of its income from its property portfolio. Its 2000 annual report said total assets were around 40 million euros (27 million pounds). IG Farben IL shares were suspended on the Frankfurt stock exchange. The stock traded some 46.67 percent down at 0.8 euros in heavy volume of 8.76 million shares after the suspension was lifted. I'm William Norman Grigg, Senior Editor for The New American magazine -- an affiliated publication of The John Birch Society. Dean Gotcher of the Institute for Authority Research has spent much of his life studying the ways in which change agents infiltrate and subvert communities in order to undermine established values. According to Gotcher, one of the most successful tactics used by those cultural revolutionaries is the dialectic process, in which diverse groups of people, in a facilitated environment, are led to submerge their disagreements in an effort to achieve consensus. This can be carried out in discussion groups, classroom settings, management seminars, or in many other settings. The objective of the facilitator is to break down barriers and normal restrictions, observes Gotcher. The facilitator (sometimes called the change agent) uses the `consensus process' [to] stifle sensible protests. This actually results in `induced paralysis' of the objectors [those who seek to defend conventional social mores and customs]. Objectors to the process of `consensus' are made to feel like they are `rocking the boat,' Gotcher continues. Those who object to the changes are encouraged to alter their standards so that `they can get along with others.' The reason given to get rid of normal standards often is the claim that others are being `offended.' Beguiled or brow-beaten into sacrificing principles for the sake of social amity, those being fed through the machinery of the dialectic process are carefully led through a series of subtle but significant compromises intended ultimately to remake human nature. In a typical dialectical exercise (such as a management seminar), the opening sortie in this assault is something apparently inconsequential, such as an ice-breaker exercise involving a silly game. One example cited by Gotcher was a supposedly innocuous game involving a papa bull, a mama bull, and a baby bull. Of course, a mama bull cannot exist. But for the purposes of the ice-breaker routine, participants are required to pretend that such a creature does exist, in order to form smooth and amicable relationships with each other. As Gotcher points out, dialecticians use such harmless shared deceptions to lay a crucial predicate: There are no absolutes, reality itself is subjective, and what really matters is conforming to the consensus, the will of the collective. Exercises of this sort, he warns, are being employed in corporate, professional, health care, educational management training, as well as in outcome-based educational programs. Whether promoted by organizations such as the NEA [National Education Association], the local Chamber of Commerce, the United Nations, [the] United Nations Education, Science, and Culture Organization (UNESCO), or through grant programs such as Goals 2000 and School to Work, this process is having a direct effect upon all our lives, observes Gotcher. The purpose is to prepare the public mind for the onset of the total state, which would by definition be completely emancipated from all moral and legal restraints. The process described by Gotcher works best in relatively small, intimate settings. But the public at large is also being run through the dialectic process through the instrumentality of prime-time television. Gotcher's example of a mythical mama bull has a real-life counterpart in the case of the so-called married couple that took the $1 million prize in CBS television's Amazing Race. The couple in question, who won the round-the-world competition staged in the program, are two homosexual men. The decision to refer to them as married was approved at the network's loftiest corporate echelon. After this gesture provoked a smattering of criticism, a CBS executive rebuked the objectors: They're gay and they're married. What's the problem? The problem, of course, is that men cannot be married to each other anymore than a bull can be a mama. But just like the small group in the ice-breaker exercise described by Gotcher, the vast national audience for Amazing Race was required to be party to the collective falsehood of homosexual marriage. And it's hardly a coincidence that this took place at a time when serious efforts were underway -- in Vermont, California, Massachusetts, and at the U.S. Supreme Court -- to lay the groundwork for officially recognizing homosexual marriage. This coded cable was sent to the Israeli spy ring which had been planted in Egypt many months before it was activated in July 1954. The ring originally was to serve as a fifth column during the next war. The cable was preceded by oral instructions given by Colonel Benjamin Givii, head of Israel's military intelligence, to an officer headed for Cairo to join the ring. These instructions were: [Our goal is] to break the West's confidence in the existing [Egyptian] regime The actions should cause arrests, demonstrations, and expressions of revenge. The Israeli origin should be totally covered while attention should be shifted to any other possible factor. The purpose is to prevent economic and military aid from the West to Egypt. The choice of the precise objectives to be sabotaged will be left to the men on the spot, who should evaluate the possible consequences of each action ... in terms of creating commotion and public disorders.13 These orders were carried out between July 2 and July 27, 1954, by the network which was composed of about ten Egyptian Jews under the command of Israeli agents. Negotiations were at their height between Cairo and London for the evacuation of the Canal Zone, and between Cairo and Washington for arms supplies and other aid in connection with a possible U.S.-Egyptian alliance. British and American cultural and informational centers, British-owned cinemas, but also Egyptian public buildings (such as post offices) were bombed in Cairo and Alexandria. Suspicion was shifted to the Muslim Brothers, opponents of Nasser's regime. The Israeli ring was finally discovered and broken up on July 27, when one of its members was caught after a bomb exploded in his pocket in Alexandria. On that same date Sharett, who knew nothing about the ring, was informed of the facts, and he began to collect evidence on the responsibilities of defense ministry and army officials. He did nothing beyond this, however, until October 5, when Cairo officially announced the imminent trial of the arrested saboteurs. Sharett then fully supported the campaign launched by Israel to present the case as an anti-Jewish frame-up by the Egyptian regime. On December 13, two days after the trial opened in Cairo, the prime minister denounced in the Knesset "the plot ... and the show trial . . . against a group of Jews . . . victims of false accusations."* His party's paper, Davar, went as far as to accuse the Egyptian government of "a Nazi-inspired policy." Horror stories of confessions extracted from the accused under torture circulated in the Israeli and international media. Sharett knew all this to be untrue. "In reality," he wrote in his diary on January 2, 1955, "except for the first two days of their arrest, when there was some beating, the treatment of our men was absolutely decent and humane." But publicly, he kept silent did not himself join the massive anti-Nasser chorus. Even the members of the cabinet, the president of the state, not to speak of the press, were not officially informed until some time in February, when rumors exploded on each street corner in Israel. Then the true story came out, that the government propaganda had been false from beginning to end, that the terrorist ring was indeed planted in Egypt by the Israelis and the only frame-up in question was the one invented against Egypt by the Sharett administration. *See Appendix 4. By the time the trial was over-two of the accused were condemned to death and executed, eight were condemned to long terms of imprisonment, while the three Israeli commanders of the operation succeeded in fleeing from Egypt and the fourth committed suicide other important facts became known to the prime minister. The technical question of who actually gave the order to activate the ring on a certain date was not to be cleared up until six years later, when a fourth or fifth inquiry commission finally and definitely exonerated Lavon from that responsibility, and established that Dayan, Peres, Givli and other, minor, "security" aides had forged documents and falsified testimonies in order to bring about the incrimination of the minister of defense. -Caveat Lector- The social conditions you describe happen to some extent in most countries. Aspects would naturally be intensified in areas of near non-abated violence and conflict. As mostly armchair prognosticators, its not going to make any friggin difference what we say as to what goes on their. Israel has probably the most powerful military and technological capability in the region, I think that if Israel, and its leadership,were as evil as so often portrayed by such articles as the former, they would have applied the military resources to frizzle the Mid-East. They haven't; and to me, this is an indicator of the Israeli's intellectual and moral resolve and character, to find peace through other meansthan total annihilation, which is what some of her critics would like nothing better for her. Many forget that while Rome burned, Nero was busy deflecting attention away from the real center of action. The front page of Saturday's Washington Post featured a huge picture showing the burning of Baghdad with all but five percent of the front page devoted to the war in Iraq. However, at the bottom was the bunker buster which will shatter our own field of dreams here in America. The Post reported that a few hours before the Senate action, the House--meeting well past midnight on its version of the budget--voted 215 to 212 to approve Bush's full $726B tax cut request. Furthermore with the House and Senate controlled by the GOP, it is expected that by Wednesday, a final version of Bush's growth and stimulus bill will be ready. Unfortunately, our government has not really made clear what this tax law is all about. I consider this proposal to be the most heinous change as it will destroy the ability of the middle class to sustain their economic power while enhancing the upper classes. If enacted, this legislation which will deliver the final blow to the ability of Joe and Jane Average to get ahead. It should be pointed out that its title is a misnomer. This plan will not stimulate the economy but will cause much larger deficits, which will be borne by Americans as a result of the war, which is being waged. According to many key economists, the proposed legislation will change the ENTIRE TAX CODE OF AMERICA from a tax on income to a tax on consumption. At this point in history, we are the only developed country not to have this form of taxation which means Bush is globalizing our tax laws. In other words, he is harmonizing our tax laws and system to conform to what the major European industrial countries have. In my opinion, this basically will set the platform for a global IRS. Under this Value Added Tax-VAT, every time a purchase is made, there will be up to a possible 27% tax on it. This tax will replace the tax on income, making only consumption taxable while all forms of income are tax-free. For those who have enough savings to live off of their income, this is a windfall, but for those who have only debt with little or no savings, this will create a financial burden equal to the Israelites having to make bricks without straw. At the heart of this plan is the elimination of tax on corporate dividends. Again, if you obtain your living from stock dividends, this will be like going to heaven. No tax on INCOME--only a tax on what you buy. Let's look at three different sets of individuals. First we have Old Money Harry. He has never had to have a real job because he gets his living from the family trust. All of the family assets--the fabulous house, the cars, the summer homes, the yacht, the Mercedes and Rolls are held by the family trust, along with title to three large commercial pieces of real estate. Harry made several killings buying and selling real estate because the gains were tax-free since they were inside the family trust. The only downside is that the income from the trust is taxed. However, under the proposal to reduce tax brackets from 38% to 21%, it won't hurt as much. Harry will have 17% more to spend. Only what you buy--will be taxed, however, if you have it in a trust--NO TAX. Old Money Harry will achieve growth unsurpassed under the proposed tax stimulus plan, just like the Kennedy's the Rockefellers, the Mellon's and anyone else with this arrangement. Next are John and Jane Middleclass. Both have reasonably good jobs with attractive incomes. They both have advanced degrees and live in the executive home to match their rising social status. They lease a Lexus and Jaguar and think nothing of packing up and going to Vale or to the Bahamas at a moments notice. They have re-financed the house several times to add a new wing, exceptional landscaping and a pool. While they know they are basically spending everything they are bringing in, they rationalize by thinking about the rising equity in their home and how much they will be able to cash out when they retire. Unfortunately their 401k's got zapped during the NASDAQ crash. Donnie and Susie Squeeze are twenty-five years old. Donnie served in the military and works as a mechanic for the local Honda dealer. They have three small children and Susie works part-time at the local grocery store. They are saving for a down payment on a home and hope to send their kids to college if they can afford it. Right now they are just barely making ends meet.
