General Clark to Testify for the Prosecution at Milosevic
  TrialBy MARLISE SIMONS

ARIS, Dec. 13 — Washington has agreed that Gen. Wesley
  K. Clark, the former NATO commander and a contender for the Democratic
presidential nomination, can testify in the war crimes trial of Slobodan
Milosevic. But the Bush administration has demanded the right to edit
videotapes and transcripts of the sessions before they are made
public.
The two former opponents, the American general and the former president
of Yugoslavia, will face each other in court on Monday and Tuesday.
Closed sessions are routinely held at the United Nations tribunal that
deals with Balkan war crimes, but usually to protect witnesses's safety.
The conditions of General Clark's appearance are new.
The court agreed to give the United States government 48 hours to
review the testimony and to ask judges to suppress any it regards as
sensitive. Two government lawyers will accompany the general.
"The review is to ensure there was no inadvertent disclosure of
sensitive, classified information," said Pierre-Richard Prosper, the
United States ambassador at large for war crimes issues, in a telephone
interview from Washington. During the Balkan wars, he said, General Clark
"obviously had seen a substantial amount of intelligence." But, he added,
"we feel fairly confident that the bulk of the testimony and videotapes
  can be released."
The current plan is to release videotapes of the sessions on Friday,
after the review, said Jim Landale, a tribunal spokesman.
The two men confronting each other in court next week have met many
times before. General Clark spent many hours with Mr. Milosevic in 1994
and 1995, when he was special adviser to Richard C. Holbrooke, who was
trying to end the Bosnia war. They were both at the 21-day peace
negotiations Mr. Holbrooke led in Dayton, Ohio, in 1995, and they spent
lengthy sessions negotiating before NATO began bombing Serbia and its
province of Kosovo in March 1999.
Mr. Milosevic, whose trial began in February 2002, is facing 66
charges, including genocide, stemming from his role in those wars, which
left more than 200,000 people dead, destroyed villages and towns, and
drove more than a million people from their homes. General Clark will be a
  witness for the prosecution.
Prosecutors want to know how much Mr. Milosevic knew — or could have
known — about crimes committed by members of the Bosnian Serb military who
were on Belgrade's payroll and by Serbian police officers and other forces
  directly under his command.
General Clark faces direct cross-examination by Mr. Milosevic, who
conducts his own defense and usually demands as much time to question a
witness as the prosecution. Frequently, he is given more time.
Among the 280 witnesses who have already testified at the trial, there
have been many high-profile witnesses and many senior military officers
from other nations. Only France is known to have insisted that its top
military officers testify behind closed doors.
In court, Mr. Milosevic has often railed against NATO's bombing
campaign and said NATO was the one that had committed war crimes. Of the
23,000 bombs and missiles used during the 78-day campaign, some struck the
Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, several bridges, a train full of civilian
  passengers and a television station.
How much finger-pointing Mr. Milosevic will be allowed with General
Clark on the stand will depend on Richard May, the British judge who
  presides over the trial.

If you did not recognize this woman, you would not a alone. She is Howard
Dean's wife Judy, and she is "coming out" into the primary season, accompanied
by puff-pieces like the one below from AP:
Judy Dean, wife of Democratic
presidential hopeful and former Vermont Governor Howard Dean, sits in her
medical office in Shelburne, Vt., Feb. 6, 2003, where she is an internist in
private practice. If her husband wins the presidency, America's next first lady
could be a doctor tending to her patients while her husband tends the country.
(AP Photo/Toby Talbot, file)

Howard Dean's wife is apparently dropping her maiden name (Steinberg)
and now is allowing the media to refer to her by her husband's last name. This
has followed her husband's remarkable rise in popularity among the Democrats.
In a few short weeks, her pictures have suddenly appeared on Dean's website,
along with a fawning commentary from the woman known as Hillary's Monica,
Eleanor Clift. Here is a picture from Dean's website, apparently show-casing who
they hope would be the future first lady:
http://www.valuejudgment.org/archives/000172.html
Anyway, Judy's written
a fundraising letter that will be sent to donors sometime soon, a Vermont
paper reports.

The letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, is a
much more personal appeal than is typical of campaign fund-raising pleas.
She recounts how she and Dean met while both were attending the
Albert Einstein medical school and then moved to Vermont for
their residencies. Both are medical doctors and Steinberg Dean still has a
thriving practice in suburban Burlington. That’s why she has done little with
the campaign, she writes."I enjoy helping people on a one-on-one basis
getting to know them and their families and helping them deal with illness,”
she writes. "That is my way; while Howard is much more talented at improving
things for people on a bigger scale." [...] "Despite his intense
passion for public service, Howard has never made his public aspirations
become my personal obligations," she writes. "As a doctor and a partner in a
medical practice, I have responsibility to my patients. That’s why my time ‘on
the campaign trail’ is limited; when people are sick they want and need to see
  a physician who knows them."

Saddam Captured

(CBS/AP) Saddam Hussein is now a prisoner of the U.S. government, reports
CBS News Anchor Dan Rather.

U.S. news conference.

American forces captured him as he hid in the cellar of a farmhouse near his
hometown of Tikrit, ending one of the most intensive manhunts in history.
The arrest, eight months after the fall of Baghdad, was carried out without
a shot fired and was a huge victory for U.S. forces.

Ladies and gentlemen, we got him, U.S. administrator L. Paul Bremer told a
news conference. The tyrant is a prisoner.

Bremer said that the bearded Saddam was captured Saturday at 8:30 p.m. in a
cellar in the town of Adwar, 10 miles from Tikrit, ending one of the most
intense manhunts in history.

In the capital, radio stations played celebratory music, residents fired
small arms in the air in celebration and others drove through the streets,
shouting, They got Saddam! They got Saddam!

White House officials are absolutely elated, saying it's a great day for
Iraq. The news lifts a heavy political weight from President Bush's
shoulders, reports CBS News Chief White House Correspondent John Roberts.

At the news conference announcing his capture, U.S. forces aired a video
showing a bearded Saddam being examined by a doctor holding his mouth open
with a tongue depressor, apparently to get a DNA sample.

Then a video was shown of Saddam after he was shaved.

Iraqi journalists in the audience stood, pointed and shouted Death to
Saddam! and Down with Saddam!

The captive has been talkative and is being cooperative, Sanchez said.
Saddam was being held at an undisclosed location, and U.S. authorities have
not yet determined whether to hand him over to the Iraqis for trial. Iraqi
officials want him to stand trial before a war crimes tribunal created last
week.

Two other Iraqis were also arrested in the raid and two AK-47 assault
rifles, a pistol and $750,000 in $100 bills were seized, Sanchez said.

Sanchez described Saddam's demeanor during the arrest, saying he seemed a
tired man. Also I think a man resigned.

Forces from the 4th Infantry Division along with Special Forces captured
Saddam, the U.S. military said. There were no shots fired or injuries in the
raid, called Operation Red Dawn, said Lt. Gen. Richardo Sanchez.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair welcomed Saddam's capture.

This is very good news for the people of Iraq. It removes the shadow that
has been hanging over them for too long of the nightmare of a return to the
Saddam regime, he said in a statement released by his office.

Trapped in the cellar, Saddam was in a six-to-eight-foot-deep spider hole
that had been camouflaged with bricks and dirt. The soldiers saw the hole,
investigated and found him inside, Sanchez said.

The video showed an air vent and fan inside the hole to allow Saddam to
remain hidden for an extended period.

In Baghdad, shop owners closed their doors, worried that all the shooting
would make the streets unsafe.

I'm very happy for the Iraqi people. Life is going to be safer now, said
35-year-old Yehya Hassan, a resident of Baghdad. Now we can start a new
beginning.

Earlier in the day, rumors of the capture sent people streaming into the
streets of Kirkuk, a northern Iraqi city, firing guns in the air in
celebration.

We are celebrating like it's a wedding, said Kirkuk resident Mustapha
Sheriff. We are finally rid of that criminal.

This is the joy of a lifetime, said Ali Al-Bashiri, another resident. I
am speaking on behalf of all the people that suffered under his rule.

Title: On Rove, and The Big Bad GOP
-Caveat Lector-

On Rove, and The Big Bad GOP
December 13, 2003
By David Friedman

I have some advice for all of you. Ignore the GOP until next fall. I don't mean ignore them in the let them get away with saying whatever they want sense. I mean ignore the quality of their argument in the sense that they have Karl Rove at the helm of their political ship. In order to beat Rove, you have to understand what's behind the words coming out of his mouth. And by Rove's mouth, I mean the collective mouths of his many, many, many surrogates. Why ignore those words? Because Rove is a spin-master. He is Ari Fliescher on crack. He will do everything in his power to frame the debate. It doesn't matter the sins of his masters, the debate never centers on that - because Rove spins faster than a supermassive black-hole.

Rove's astronomical spin machine already has a good number of you convinced that our worst commander in chief, quite possibly ever, is unbeatable. He has you convinced of this because he is good at his job. Really, really good. Hell, he made George W. Bush President (some might say it's Scalia's fault, but Rove deserves his due) - and that's an accomplishment, for sure. He made a good number of you believe the GOP has a mandate, despite losing the popular vote in 2000. He even has spun relatively small victories in the south (please look away from Louisiana), and a resulting small majority in congress as proof that the GOP is unbeatable. Yes, Karl Rove is worth his weight in gold to the Neoconservative movement.

So how does Rove do it? By any means necessary, really. Mostly though, he likes to play on people's fears. This has been a marketing ploy of the GOP for some time now, yet Rove has taken it to absurd levels never dreamed possible. Who would have thought three years ago, when Al Gore and Democrats decided to give Bush the benefit of the doubt, swallowed hard, and showed bipartisanship after the contentious election - that Rove and company would exploit a national tragedy to push their Neoconservative agenda (can you say Iraq?). Well some of us knew, but it's sad that we have to be so cynical. Regardless, Rove, more so than any other in the White House, is responsible for the success of the GOP. He has many convinced that Bush was the great uniter after 9/11. Sorry, Mr. Rove, it was Osama bin Laden that united us, albeit briefly - no thanks to you and your Neocon strategery.

So, what is spin, anyway? You are going to get a different answer from everybody you ask. This, in itself defines spin. The truth is relative to whomever you are asking. Rove, however, likes to play games with his spin on the truth, and is especially adept at sowing doubt in the minds of his adversaries. He does this with disinformation, and sometimes outright lies. He doesn't want you to see his hand, yet he wants you to believe you have. Using this philosophy to maximum effect, he has created an aura of invincibility, albeit a fake one.

Take for example his known antics. An accidentally released campaign strategy disk. A leak here, a leak there (you'd be amazed at the plumbing problems of the GOP). Theories that he had the office of his own candidate bugged (way back in his early Texas days) in order to create the appearance of controversy. He shows up himself at a Fourth of July Parade saying he wants Howard Dean to be the GOP's opponent in 2004. All trademark Atwater tactics Rove has taken to new levels.

With Rove it is always smoke and mirrors. And the most important rule of all... IGNORE HYPOCRISY. This more than anything defines the Neocon movement in so many ways. Just ask true fiscal-conservatives boiling mad over out-of-control spending by the Bush administration - at the same time Neocons in Bush's camp say Howard Dean is a

Official: Saddam Dug Hole to Hide Himself
By Associated Press

December 14, 2003, 6:48 AM EST

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Saddam Hussein, trapped in a cellar, dug a hole and buried
himself as U.S. soldiers moved into the house where he was hiding, an Iraqi
official said Sunday.

The American soldiers had to use shovels to dig him out, Entifadh Qanbar,
spokesman for Governing Council member Ahmad Chalabi, told The Associated
Press.

Qanbar, basing his account on reports from members of the U.S.-led
occupation authority, said Saddam had a salt-and-pepper beard when he was
captured. Soldiers photographed him, shaved the beard and photographed him
again before running DNA tests, he said.

The DNA test confirmed 100 percent Saddam Hussein's identity, he said.

Qanbar said the capture took place in a town very close to Tikrit,
Saddam's hometown 100 miles north of Baghdad.

Bishop: 33 abused by 16 priests in Indiana diocese By Ken Kusmer AP 12/11/03 "Sixteen priests sexually abused 33 children in the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend in the past 53 years, Bishop John D'Arcy announced Thursday, making the most public accounting yet of the clergy scandal in an Indiana diocese. All but two of the victims were physically abused, including 15 during the 1980s, but none since 1987, D'Arcy said in a statement released at a news conference in South Bend. To this day, the case remains open, and the priest is, as he has been for three decades, the only suspect, according to law enforcement sourcesmore certain is that the Diocese of Springfield knew Lavigne was a suspect, and knew of sexual abuse complaints against him, and yet allowed him access as a priest to children for 20 years after the murder. During that time, according to police who have investigated him and the nearly 40 people who have filed lawsuits against him, Lavigne abused scores of children. In 1992 he was convicted of fondling two boys and sentenced to probation. In 1994 the diocese paid $1.4 million to settle claims brought by 17 people who said Lavigne abused them, and Lavigne now faces another 20 claims. The Massachusetts Sex Offenders Registry Board classified Lavigne as a Level 3 offender, meaning he is deemed a high risk to reoffend." http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2003/12/14/a_priest_a_boy_a_mystery/

Exclusive: Saddam key in early CIA plot By Richard Sale
UPI Intelligence Correspondent Published 4/10/2003 7:30 PM
U.S. forces in Baghdad might now be searching high and low for Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, but in the past Saddam was seen by U.S. intelligence services as a bulwark of anti-communism and they used him as their instrument for more than 40 years, according to former U.S. intelligence diplomats and intelligence officials.
While many have thought that Saddam first became involved with U.S. intelligence agencies at the start of the September 1980 Iran-Iraq war, his first contacts with U.S. officials date back to 1959, when he was part of a CIA-authorized six-man squad tasked with assassinating then Iraqi Prime Minister Gen. Abd al-Karim Qasim.

[CTRL] What's next for the troops?

2003-12-14 Thread William Shannon
-Caveat Lector-
http://batr.org/wrack/121403.html

What's next for the troops?

By now you heard the announcements that Saddam Hussein has been captured. The celebrations have been reported, the pictures of joy sent around the world. Now that the war is really over, when will the troops start to come home? Before you hear and read all the detailed accounts of the capture, lets focus on the stated purpose of the Iraqi invasion. Since a WMD cache still eludes finding, the proponents of the war must hang their hat on the finding and arresting of the evil tyrant.

Mission accomplished, so whats next? Any student of history knows all too well that the U.S. involvement into Iraq will not be temporary or that the boys wont be coming home anytime soon. The real test of motives for any belligerent is how they manage a victory. It is necessary to remind that the intrusion into Iraq was a pre-empted incursion. This strategy is certainly a fundamental departure from any previous policy to commit to a major campaign. Therefore, the defenders of that course, are left with the unenviable task of justifying the results of that action.

As time passes, you will be left empty with this temporary enthusiasm. In the end, this war will never be seen as a liberation of the Iraqi people, but will be viewed as an assault on the American society. Principles of engagement have significance. Deployments deplete moral resolve when made discretionary. The question that will haunt the War Party is whether this war was necessary?

When General Ricardo Sanchez laughs at the question when will the boys be leaving, his answer is typical: when the mission is over. This is an opportunity to grow up as a nation. Rational citizens are left with the stark reality that foreign policy is designed as a mobile plan to implement hidden goals with each incremental intimidation against regimes that oppose the New World Order.

The talking heads are already praising the triumph as a message to any other country that is ruled by a dictator, not approved by the Washington DC autocrats. Thats the undeniable lesson of this encounter into the affairs of the international disunity that only globalism can cure. This precedent will establish that superior power can be used to poke a stick in the eye of any country that opposes the interventionist legions of armed occupation. The special forces will get the permanent assignment of destabilizing regimes for the purpose of establishing the desired order.

Nice work if you can get it, but for whom, does this formula benefit? Watch the travels of James Baker III for your answer. As Greg Palast so aptly addresses the big picture: We are talking about something called "sovereign debt." And unless George Bush has finally 'fessed up and named himself Pasha of Iraq, he is not their sovereign. Mr. Bush has no authority to seize control of that nation's assets nor its debts . . . Over the years, Jim Baker has taken responsibility for putting bread on the Bush family table. As Senior Counsel to Carlyle, the arms-dealing investment group, Baker arranged for the firm to hire both President Bush 41 after he was booted from the White House and President Bush 43 while his daddy was still in office.

The responsibility for nation building is another excuse used to control a conquered country. The Iraqi Governing Council just a replacement for Mohammed Reza Pahlavi - shah of Iran - what do you think? Take the long perspective when putting the jigsaw puzzle together. The game never changes, its only the pieces that are painted with different images.

Has this war made America any safer? In the end, thats the only question that really matters. Domestically this battle has been a debacle for liberty. You are hearing the media rejoicing and using the term freedom, over and over. Somehow it escapes how the antecedent of so called Iraqi liberation, has produced freedom back home. Saddam a dictator, sure. But why should replacing him with a cabal of globalists, using the cover of a coalition name be any different?

The love feast is already gone nauseous. Just wait when Bin Laden is hooked by the Bush clan (just before the coming election), Baker will be working overtime. Forcing democracy upon a culture that has no tradition or desire to fashion one is the decisive mistake of the living history you are watching. If the real goal was Iraqi freedom, let the factions break up the country into tribal territories. Dont hold your breath, thats a solution that doesnt serve the selective control of the oil flow.

Dont be too surprised when you hear that those phantom weapons are stored in Syria and Iran. Saddam will talk and what is needed will be said. Bring the troops home, when they are already there, just means more work yet to do . . . If you doubt this assessment, check back in ten years and see who is right. The empire will build their Trajans Column. Conquered barbarians will be allowed to enter the gate of the new Rome. And the

Corporate Media Propaganda and its Weapons of Mass Distraction

By Manuel Valenzuela
http://www.smirkingchimp.com/article.php?sid=14106mode=nestedorder=0

He who controls the media controls the masses. Today, America's media is
controlled exclusively by fewer than a dozen multinational conglomerates
and their many interests. NewsCorp, AOL, Viacom, General Electric, Disney
and others have formed a media oligarch that reaches into every American
home and most every citizen. These few omnipresent entities hold as
paramount the belief in assuring for themselves perpetual loyalty from as
many of the masses as possible. Revenue and profit, corporate growth and
power, executive pay and ego, these are all determined by us, the masses,
and helps explain why the oligarchy has decided to invest and take an
interest in all forms of media that reaches and influences us.

We are the lifeblood of the conglomerate, of vital importance, and, as
such, it is in its best interest to control as much of our lives as
possible, transforming us into obedient servants of obliviousness. Is it no
coincidence, then, that the United States has become a nation whose masses
no longer question authority or the propaganda that passes for news? Is it
any wonder why we seem so ignorant as to what is being done to us and
incurious as to what is happening in the world, readily and naively
accepting as true everything that is spewed out of our televisions and
newspapers? We have allowed the oligarchy to hide the keys of democracy
while we carelessly follow it on the road to fascism, where the elite have
control of all aspects of our lives, including our mind.

We live at a time when capitalism's inner demons are beginning to be
exhumed from the catacombs of the human ego, when love for the almighty
dollar and her sister greed blinds those basking in the hypnotizing light
of greenbacks and materialism. This phenomenon, combined with the
addictions spurred by power and pomposity, has created in the last several
decades a need by the powerful elite to manipulate and condition the
masses; to transform and mold us into subservient drones that neither
think, question, participate or demand.

Through the use of the television -- the most influential instrument of
control and propaganda in present day America ñ conglomerates can direct
and sway public opinion on virtually every subject they see fit. The
television has become an opiate for the masses and a conduit from where
conglomerates can dictate how society thinks, acts and evolves. Our habits
and ethics are manipulated, our ideas and beliefs distorted. We are but
pawns in a game of corporate capitalism played by a few elites whose
economic interests lie in making us docile, conformist and oblivious
creatures of mediocrity ingrained with the need to shop and consume. The
system instills a sense of paralysis, isolation and uniformity among the
masses. We are assimilated to conform to society, to incorporate how the
oligarchy wants us to live. The derailment of democracy as we know it is
the end result of the reality we are presently experiencing.

As captives to their propaganda, our ears become theirs, our mouths spout
their distortions and our minds contemplate what they want us to believe.
To the capitalist elites, we are but a product, hundreds of millions of
worker bees addicted to televison, easily persuaded and exploited, wishing
for the escapist fantasies we see, sold like shares of stock to other
corporate entities interested in our existence, in our captive audience.
They are the strings by which we move, the

Protocols Forgery Argument is Flawed
Henry Makow Ph.D.

Next to the Bible The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is perhaps the mostly widely read book in the world.

Published in Russia in 1903, it purports to be the leaked master plan for "Jewish world domination." It is the kind of thing that would be studied at secret workshops of an occult society.

In different ways, both Zionists and Nazis have made it synonymous with virulent anti Semitism and genocide.

But surely Jews should not be blamed for the machinations of a tiny secret society. The vast majority of Jews would disavow this master plan if they believed it existed.

Surely one can condemn all racism and genocide in the strongest possible terms and still believe the Protocols are authentic.

In my opinion, the equation of the Protocols with anti Semitism is really a ploy to divert attention away from this master plan.

The plagiarism claim is part of a propaganda campaign waged by conscious and unconscious collaborators in academia and the media.

The Forgery Claim

We are told that The Protocols of Zion is a hoax, a "proven forgery" concocted by the Tsarist Political Police (the Okhrana) to incite anti Semitism and discredit revolutionaries.

But the "proof" is far from convincing.

It consists of three articles published in The London Times (August 16-18, 1921) by Philip Graves. www.rense.com/general45/proto.htm

According to Graves, Protocols is a crude, chapter-by-chapter plagiarism of Maurice Joly's Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu (1864).

It was easy to make this claim while Joly's book was unavailable. Napolean III's police confiscated it as soon as it was published.

But it is available now and I invite you to compare the two texts. In my opinion, they are entirely different in tone, content and purpose. At 140 pages, Dialogues is twice as long as Protocols. Most of it finds no echo in the Protocols.

The crux of Graves' argument is that certain references and passages in Protocols have been lifted from Dialogues. He claims there are 50 of these and produces about a dozen.

Their striking resemblance to the Protocols leaves little doubt that the author did refer to the Dialogues as part of his research. He had no compunction about borrowing or reshaping a few passages that appealed to him.

Indeed Philip Graves is "struck by the absence of any effort on the part of the plagiarist to conceal his plagiarisms."

That's because he had nothing to hide. He was not Graves' "unimportant precis- writer employed by the court or by the Okhrana" to construct a hoax.

He was a diabolical genius crafting an original work. It is simplistic and disingenuous to characterize Protocols as a hoax.

Political Provenance

Graves' article smacks of Zionist propaganda. Graves "expose" of the Protocols appeared in August 1921 when Zionists were pressing the League of Nations to turn Palestine into a Jewish homeland under British Mandate.

Philip Grave tells the unlikely story that a "Mr. X" brought the Dialogues to him in Constantinople where he was the Times' correspondent. Mr. X presented it as "irrefutable proof" that the Protocols are a plagiarism.

Mr. X was a White Russian, which seems incredible given the Jewish role in the Bolshevik Revolution. He claims he bought the book from, get this, "a former member of the Okhrana" who had fled to Constantinople.

In The Controversy of Zion, (Chapter 34) Douglas Reed, a Times' staffer, provides additional background.

In May 1920, Lord Northcliffe, a part owner of The Times, printed an article about the Protocols of Zion entitled The Jewish Peril, A Disturbing Pamphlet, A Call for an Enquiry. " It concluded:

"An impartial investigation of these would-be documents and their history is most desirable...are we to dismiss the whole matter without inquiry and to let the influence of such a book as this work unchecked?"

Then in May 1922 Northcliffe visited Palestine and wrote that Britain had been too hasty to promise it to the Jewish people when in fact it belonged to 700,000 Muslim Arab residents.

Mr. Wickham Steed, the editor of The Times of London in 1921 refused to print the article and Northcliffe tried to get him fired.

Somehow Steed was able to have Northcliffe declared "insane" and committed. Later Northcliffe complained he was being poisoned and died suddenly in 1922.

Douglas Reed was Northcliffe's secretary but didn't learn of these events until they appeared in Official History of the Times in the 1950's.

Clearly Northcliffe had offended some "big boys" when he opposed the British Mandate in Palestine. Why was it so important?

Israel is intended to be the capital of the Masonic World Government. They are already constructing the infrastructure. See "The Roots of Evil in Jerusalem" http://thegoldenreport.com/articles.asp?id=00180

[CTRL] Let's Represent US Interests, NOT Israel's

2003-12-14 Thread William Shannon
-Caveat Lector-

Let's represent U.S. interests for once, instead of Israel's
by Joseph Sobran

'"Much as we want to coordinate our activities with the United States, the interests (of the United States and Israel) are not identical. We have to, from time to time, worry about our own interests."

That was Yitzhak Shamir speaking in 1981, before he became Israel's prime minister. He spoke as an Israeli official should speak: He reminded one and all that as far as he was concerned, Israel came first.

If you can imagine an American politician talking like that, you have a vivid imagination. The first American .politician who flatly asserts the primacy of American over Israeli interests will probably go the way of Charles Percy, who in 1984 lost the Senate seat he had held for 18 years when the Israel lobby made his defeat a top priority. Sen. Percy had voted as Israel wished with almost perfect: consistency, but in this Congress, almost wasn't good: enough to suit the powerful American-Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). He was branded "Israel's worst adversary in Congress," and now his old seat is occupied by Paul Simon, who understands that crucial distinction between always and nearly always.

Our politicians dodge the question of which country they are serving by asserting that the two countries' interests, contrary to Mr. Shamir, are practically 'identical. Israel is said to be our "only reliable ally in the Middle East," our "strategic asset" or "the only :democracy in the region."

Such talk is self-serving sentimentalism. The politicians who utter it are pretending to be standing up for America when they are bending the knee before Israel. I wonder if the interests of Siamese twins could coincide as closely as those of the U.S. and Israel are said to do.

If Israel were our enemy; then a vote for Israel would be a vote against America. But this is not the case; There is no perfect correlation between our interests and Israel's, positive or negative, nor could there, since each country at times has trouble defining its own interests.

But the interests of the two countries must conflict now and then, as they visibly do over the Palestinian question, and it's suspicious when a congressman professes to be acting in America's best interests by compiling a nearly 100 percent pro-Israel voting record. It's a foreign-policy version of the idea that what's good for General Motors is good for the country: In a way, Congress' subservience to Israel is of a piece with its general subservience to domestic special interests -- business, farmers, labor and teachers unions.

The charge of dual loyalty should not be directed against the American Jewish community, but at its proper target: our elected representatives. In point of fact, American Jews have resisted Mr. Shamir's overweening demands that they give Israel, not America, their undivided loyalty. It's our leaders who have been guilty of a collective failure of hardheaded patriotism.

One congressman was recently quoted as telling an Israeli official, "I sympathize with what you're doing on the West Bank, but how can I explain it to the lumberjack in Oregon?" It didn't seem to cross his mind that the lumberjack in Oregon is the man he was elected to represent.

Even presidents have been unwilling to enforce the conditions of American aid to Israel. This was one of Ronald Reagan's chief failings. The worst, in this respect, was Lyndon B. Johnson, who squelched an investigation of the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, which killed 34 American sailors and wounded 171 others. Mr. Johnson may have also concealed the theft of American enriched uranium for use in the construction of nuclear weapons in Israel.

Israeli spying and technology theft in this country received brief publicity with the arrest and conviction of Jonathan Pollard, but there has been no comprehensive congressional inquiry into the problem. Not only would such an inquiry undercut the idea that Israel is our "reliable ally", it also would embarrass Congress itself, which has allowed this to go on with impunity for so many years.

If the interests of the two countries were in automatic harmony, there would be no need of an Israel lobby here to see that Israel's interests are served. What we need now is an American lobby in Jerusalem. No, come to think of it, what we need is an American lobby in Washington.

[CTRL] Wolfowitz Beggars Belief And Country

Wolfowitz Beggars Belief And Country

By Matt Bivens

It's not often someone writes a snotty five-page memo that ends up indirectly costing his nation upwards of $8.3 billion, but Paul Wolfowitz likely now has that distinction. The U.S. deputy defense secretary's edict to ban Russia, France, Canada and Germany from participating in U.S.-funded Iraqi reconstruction is a marvel of grasping small-mindedness.

"International support and cooperation are necessary for progress in Iraq," Wolfowitz writes -- and then three sentences later he asserts that all kinds of international support and cooperation from Russia, France, Canada or Germany would not only be unwelcome, but would jeopardize "the essential security interests of the United States."

Still two sentences later he asserts, "Every effort must be made to expand international cooperation in Iraq," and then three sentences later he concludes that "limiting competition for prime contracts [i.e., snubbing the Russians and the rest] will encourage the expansion of international cooperation in Iraq."

It's simple. We get more countries to cooperate by allowing fewer countries to cooperate.

This absurd position was endorsed by President George W. Bush, though we are told the White House is "fuming" at the "timing" of Wolfowitz's edict, which was published just as the administration has been asking Russia to forgive $8 billion in debts to Iraq. That's now not going to happen and Canada is also talking about taking its $300 million in proposed aid back off the table.

The Wolfowitz-baptized few are listed on page 5 of the memo and include Tonga, Micronesia, Eritrea, Angola and Afghanistan -- proud coalition supporters all -- along with Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Moldova and Uzbekistan.

My thought reading this list was: What, no Turkmenistan? It's an outrage: Turkmenistan's cruel and murderous dictator has been left off the invitation list. Uzbekistan is invited to sign up to receive a chunk of the $18.6 billion smorgasbord of Iraq reconstruction funds -- and Uzbekistan's cruel and murderous dictator doesn't even control any oil and gas. Surely this is simply an oversight. Seriously, though, we're getting yet another valuable glimpse into the thought processes of the men who dragged us into a land war-of-choice in the Middle East.

For one, we've another demonstration -- as if we needed it -- of how little these guys understand cause and effect. There's not been a single intentional or unintentional slight America has offered Russia in the past 30 odd years to which Russia has not immediately responded tit-for-tat. A child could have predicted the outcome of asking Russia to give up $8 billion of claims for the greater good, while simultaneously denying it a few billion of our own dollars because our "interests" come first.

Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov's rebuttal -- that Iraq is not poor, and that no one ever offered to write off Russia's debts -- was the obvious reply.

For another, all this high-minded talk about building "a free Iraq" aside, the Bush team clearly sees the billions allocated to fix up Iraq as spoils of war. Wolfowitz states frankly that he sees tremendous chunks of the money being doled out as rewards for loyalty -- as money to benefit not Iraqis but "contractors," whether Micronesian, Uzbek or, most likely, Texan.

So Americans are borrowing billions of dollars to feed rapaciously overcharging corporations, and that is not some unhappy byproduct, but the actual plan, now formalized in the Wolfowitz memo.

Shannon, I didn't
know you were such a scholar of the Protocols that you could post someone's view
with such supporting authority. For your edification I decided to post
some exchanges between scholars on the protocols. I've not included their
names, but I'm sure you will have read the different translations, noting the
deletions of sections between editions and differences in translations.
Somehow your scholar wasn't mentioned, but I'm sure that's just an
oversight. LOL

There is a discussion of the relation of the work by Joly to the
Protocols, including some examples of parallel passages, in article of mine on
the H-Antisemitism site, at http://www.h-net.msu.edu/~antis/doc/
I recall that Norman Cohn's seminal work on the Protocols
("Warrant for Genocide" - Harper Row, 1967, now available in a new, 2001
edition from Serif) contains an appendix in which he reprints the relevant
passages from Joly's work and the associated portions that were plagiarized in
the Nilus version. I'm away from my office at present, however, and can't grab
the Cohn text to verify this.
I have read that the most likely suspect to have forged the
Protocols was the Paris section head
of the Okhrana, the Czarist predecessor of the KGB. His motive allegedly
was to discredit his boss as a way to advance his own power in the organization. "Uncovering" what he
had actually written himself would demonstrate that he was on top of Jewish
conspiracies while his boss was asleepat the wheel. Is this story now
regarded as credible?
According to Michelis the Russian version of the 'Protocols'
were frenchified in order to make them
look more authentic. The involvement of the French offices of the Okhrana that
you mentioned is since in doubt. (Michelis, C. G.de: Les 'Protocoles des sages
de Sion'.Philologie et histoire. In: Cahiers du Monde russe, 38. Jg. (1997), H.
3, S. 263-306; Hagemeister, Michael:
Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Aus: Laqueur, Walter; Baumel, Judith Tydor (Hrsg.):
Holocaust Encyclopedia. New Haven, London 2001. S. 499-503.)
Second question. Part of the first story was the original
from which the Protocols were forged. Again, I have read that the forger
found an obscure French espionage novel called "Imperium" which had been
written about forty years earlier. The author was supposed to have
been an anti-Napoleon journalist.
The book described a widespread
conspiracy to seize political power by characters who represented
Napoleon III and his allies, and made little, if any mention of Jews or
Jewish machinations.
I haven't heard about any french espionage novel. I suppose you
mean Maurice Joly's 'Dialogue aux Enfers entre Machiavel et Montesquieu' (1854)?
Joly was a liberal advocate with an
anti-Napoleon (III.) notion. His book is considered as one of several prequels
to the 'Protocols', although Joly did not mention any all. As Umberto Eco points
out Joly himself plagiarised Eugène Sue's "Die Geheimnisse des Volkes" (Mystères
du peuple) (Eco, Umberto: Im Wald der Fiktionen.
Sechs Streifzüge durch die Literatur. München 1994,
S. 177).

of Antisemitism
The origins of the infamous forgery, the Protocols
of the Sages of Zion,
are the subject of much vigorous debate. In this
meticulously researched
and cogently argued study, Cesare G. De Michelis
illuminates its authors
and the circumstances of production by focusing on
the text itself.
De Michelis examines in detail the earliest texts
of the Protocols, looking
in particular at the historical and structural
relationships among them.
His research unveils the differing texts of the
Protocols and the presumed
date of the first forgery. It also yields a
greater understanding of the
milieu in which the forgery was produced and the
identity and motivations
of its authors.
This volume is a revised and expanded edition of
the original, which
appeared in Italian. Featured is an arguably
archetypal Russian text of the
Protocols, which De Michelis pieced together from
several publications,
based on careful textual analysis.
Cesare G. De Michelis is a professor of modern and
contemporary Italian
literature at the Università degli Studi di Padova
in Italy

Is the Tschikower study available anywhere?
Perhaps it needs to be made Internet accessible?

I read the only German university library edition of Richard S.
Levy's: "A lie and a libel" and immediately ordered the book in my bookstore.
Thank you very much - Richard Levy - for bringing Benjamin W. Segel's work to
our attention.
Now I have two basic questions:
Are there any comparative studies of the different language
editions of the
