Are You Going To Get Mad?
by Charley Reese

It is now about as clear as it's going to get that Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction. Secretary of State Colin Powell even contradicted himself (in his U.N. speech) by admitting recently that there is no evidence of any link between Saddam and al-Qaida.

Prior to the Iraq War, the Bush administration asserted as fact that Saddam had huge quantities of chemical and biological weapons and was actively pursuing nuclear weapons. Administration members ridiculed people who expressed any doubts. Today, after spending millions of dollars looking for the weapons, they haven't found anything. And every Iraqi official captured, none of whom has any reason at all to lie, has said the same thing: There are no weapons of mass destruction.

In fact, the Iraqis had been saying that for years, and the Bush administration replied, "You're lying." Now we have this situation. The facts on the ground prove that the Iraqis, whom President Bush called liars, were telling the truth. What does that make Bush? It makes Bush either very badly mistaken or a liar.

It seems to me that if Bush were merely mistaken, he would admit it. He would say to the American people: "Look, I thought Iraq had those weapons based on intelligence, but apparently the intelligence was wrong. I apologize for misleading you." But the president will not do that. He gets huffy and defensive when asked about weapons of mass destruction. Before the war, he never opened his mouth without talking about weapons of mass destruction. It might be that there is simply an arrogant gene in the Bush family. It might be that he was just lying.

It is true that the intelligence reports contained a lot of reservations, expressions of doubt and uncertainty, but when this came out of the political process, it was told to the American people as unquestionable fact without reservations. "Intelligence gathered by this government and other governments leaves no doubt that the Iraq regime continues to possess and to conceal some of the most lethal weapons ever devised," Bush said on March 17. All the Bush people were asserting this to be a fact.

Now we have nearly 500 dead Americans who died to protect the United States from weapons that don't exist. And more will die, and for what reason? So Halliburton and other big corporations can make a lot of money? So Israel can feel safer? So we can have permanent military bases in Iraq? So the president can strut about and call himself the Conqueror of Iraq? One thing you can be sure of: They won't die defending the United States, because Iraq is not now and never was a threat to the United States.

It's no wonder Bush avoids military funerals and has barred the press from the airport where our dead come home. It's no wonder he has clamped a lid of secrecy on the search for weapons of mass destruction. What he ought to do is write a letter of apology to the families of every dead and wounded soldier. That'll be the day.

I don't know about you, but I'm damned angry that the president took this country to war on false pretenses. He has now dreamed up all these other reasons for going to war, but he sold this war to Congress and to the American people on the basis that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.

This is far more serious than anything Bill Clinton did. He lied about dillydallying with a young girl. This president apparently lied about the reasons he wanted to take this country to war. He is, behind his facade of good old boy, apparently a man so arrogant that he does not think the American people deserve to be told the truth.

Maybe he's right. If the American people are not offended enough to throw him out of office, then apparently â in this country, anyway â the truth no longer matters.

Admiral Says USS Liberty Crew Left to Die by Lyndon Johnson

By Adm. Thomas Moorer

Â

After State Department officials and historians assembled in Washington, D.C. to discuss the 1967 war in the Middle East, I am compelled to speak out about one of U.S. historyâs most shocking cover-ups.

On June 8, 1967, Israel attacked our proud naval shipâthe USS Libertyâkilling 34 American servicemen and wounding 172. Those men were then betrayed and left to die by our own government.

U.S. military rescue aircraft were recalled, not once, but twice, through direct intervention by the Johnson administration. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamaraâs cancellation of the Navyâs attempt to rescue the Liberty, which I personally confirmed from the commanders of the aircraft carriers America and Saratoga, was the most disgraceful act I witnessed in my entire military career.

To add insult to injury, Congress, to this day, has failed to hold formal hearings on Israelâs attack on this American ship. No official investigation of Israelâs attack has ever permitted the testimony of the surviving crew members.

A 1967 investigation by the Navy, upon which all other reports are based, has now been fully discredited as a cover-up by its senior attorney. Capt. Ward Boston, in a sworn affidavit, recently revealed that the court was ordered by the White House to cover up the incident and find that Israelâs attack was âa case of mistaken identity.â

Some distinguished colleagues and I formed an independent commission to investigate the attack on the USS Liberty. After an exhaustive review of previous reports, naval and other military records, including eyewitness testimony from survivors, we recently presented our findings on Capitol Hill. They include:

â Israeli reconnaissance aircraft closely studied the Liberty during an eight-hour period prior to the attack, one flying within 200 feet of the ship. Weather reports confirm the day was clear with unlimited visibility. The Liberty was a clearly marked American ship in international waters, flying an American flag and carrying large U.S. Navy hull letters and numbers on its bow.

Despite claims by Israeli intelligence that they confused the Liberty with a small Egyptian transport, the Liberty was conspicuously different from any vessel in the Egyptian navy. It was the most sophisticated intelligence ship in the world in 1967. With its massive radio antennae, including a large satellite dish, it looked like a large lobster and was one of the most easily identifiable ships afloat.

â Israel attempted to prevent the Libertyâs radio operators from sending a call for help by jamming American emergency radio channels.

â Israeli torpedo boats machine-gunned lifeboats at close range that had been lowered to rescue the most seriously wounded.

As a result, our commission concluded that:

â There is compelling evidence that Israelâs attack was a deliberate attempt to destroy an American ship and kill her entire crew.

â In attacking the USS Liberty, Israel committed acts of murder against U.S. servicemen and an act of war against the United States.

â The White House knowingly covered up the facts of this attack from the American people.

â The truth continues to be concealed to the present day in what can only be termed a national disgrace.

What was Israelâs motive in launching this attack? Congress must address this question with full cooperation from the National Security Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency and the military intelligence services.

The men of the USS Liberty represented the United States. They were attacked for two hours, causing 70 percent of American casualties, and the eventual loss of our best intelligence ship.

These sailors and Marines were entitled to our best defense. We gave them no defense.

Did our government put Israelâs interests ahead of our own? If so, why? Does our government continue to subordinate American interests to Israeli interests? These are important questions that should be investigated by an independent, fully empowered commission of the American government.

The American people deserve to know the truth about this attack. We must finally shed some light on one of the blackest pages in American naval history. It is a duty we owe not only to the brave men of the USS Liberty, but to every man and woman who is asked to wear the uniform of the United States.

Israel Versus Free Speech
In vandalizing a Stockholm art exhibit, Israel's ambassador to Sweden showed the true face of his government
by Justin Raimondo

When Israel's ambassador to Sweden vandalized a work of art that he found offensive on exhibition at Sweden's Museum of National Antiquities, Zvi Mazel did the world a service: he opened our eyes to Israel's descent into barbarism. Just as Israeli tanks bulldoze entire blocks of Palestinian homes, so her ambassador seeks to bulldoze the rising tide of protest against Israeli government policies in the West.

The artwork, by Israeli artist Dror Feiler and his Swedish wife, Gunilla, featured a pool of red water illuminated by spotlights in which a small boat floats, its sail a photo of suicide bomber Hanadi Jaradat.

The incident was captured on video, and if you want to see the full ugliness of the face that Israel now chooses to present to the world, check it out: Real Player dialup, Real Player broadband, Windows Media dialup, Windows Media broadband.

This video is fascinating in that it thoroughly debunks the impression given by Mazel and his supporters that this was an impetuous act, brought about by righteous rage over a hideous act of anti-Semitism. Instead of Mazel on an emotional rampage, it shows the cool calculated way in which the ambassador walked unhurriedly around the pool, calmly unplugging the spotlights and pushing one of them into the water, like an actor following a script.

We are then treated to the confrontation between Mazel and the museum director, who asks, plaintively, "but didn't you read the statement?" He is referring to the artists' statement accompanying the installation, which does not in any way condone violence. Indeed, it expresses sympathy for the victims of Ms. Jaradat's act, even while seeking to explain it. But in addressing Mazel as if he were open to reason, the director was wasting his breath. If this wasn't a planned provocation, then it certainly succeeded in looking like one.

It is clear even in the title of the Feilers's work, "Snow White and the Madness of Truth," that the artists, far from endorsing, advocating, or glorifying Jaradat's mad act, are quite clearly horrified by it. The smiling face of a beautiful woman floating on an ocean of blood is hardly an image likely to generate much sympathy for suicide bombers: to characterize this as propaganda on behalf of Islamic Jihad is visibly and jarringly wrong.

But the artwork itself no longer matters, because the Israelis have now made this the latest chapter in their ongoing propaganda narrative about "anti-Semitic" and "hate-filled" Europe â where speech deemed anti-Semitic is outlawed and the faintest weakest echo of Hitlerian ideology is relentlessly silenced. But, again, none of this matters. As a propagandistic exercise, Mazel's provocation was designed to challenge the very idea that "the madness of truth" needs to be explained. Because to examine it too closely is to focus on Israel's role in perpetuating the cycle of violence â and that cannot be permitted.

Mazel's real motive comes through in an interview with an Indian newspaper, Sify, which reports "part of his motivation was an anti-Israeli stance by the Swedish governing party and the country's press." Ah, now we're getting the real story! "The Social Democracy in this country is pro-Arab," Mazel whines. "There are many voices which are pro-Islamic and anti-Israeli. We've got a problem."

The Swedish media also requires correction:

"Everything Israel does is bad. When you read the press in Sweden, Israel is always the bad guy. The press in Sweden is completely anti-Israeli. â I'm accustomed to it, but when I saw a creation which is meant to be a glorification of terror, of suicide bombings, I could not hold myself back."

What a crock.

Mazel's outrageous act took everyone by surprise, but it fits the recent pattern of official Israeli behavior: the Wall of Separation, the endless incursions into Palestinian territory, open defiance of the U.S. government's feeble attempts to rein them in. All this is part and parcel of a general offensive on the part of Israel's amen corner worldwide, a series of provocative acts that dramatizes the unleashing of Israeli power in the wake of the American invasion of Iraq â and not only in the Middle East. Cynical manipulation and aggression on every front: these are the methods that characterize Israeli policy and the tactics of its partisans in every country.

Free speech is everywhere the enemy of Israel's interests â and the Israelis know it. That's why their supporters, both here and abroad, are ratcheting up the campaign to smear critics of Israel and impose limits on their right of free _expression_: "Freedom of art is not limitless," brays Mazel. "There are always some limits." The only thing there seems to be no limit on is the brazen aggression of Israel and its apolog

NRC warns on GMOs again
Report urges multiple containment systems for engineered animals
and plants | By Tabitha M
Powledge
For the fourth time in recent years, a committee of the US
National Research Council has warned regulators and developers of
genetically modified organisms (GMOs) that science knows too little
about how the novel organisms will behave in the real world.
The latest report, issued Tuesday (January 20), argues
that the safest way to make sure that a transgenic animal or plant
cannot escape to spread its engineered genes in nature is to fence
it off with more than one containment system. If one method falters,
then others can take over as fail-safes.
The new report focuses on methods of biological containment, but
concludes that confinement methods for GMOs should also include
chemical and physical barriers such as greenhouses and inland
aquaculture pens. Because of their cost and complexity, biological
containment methods such as sterilization and chromosome duplication
will usually be the third choice, according to committee member Daniel B.
Magraw, Jr., executive director of the Center for International
Environmental Law in Washington, DC. “The current lack of quality
data and science is the single most significant factor limiting our
ability to assess effective bioconfinement methods,” the report
said.
Not all GMOs will need to be confined, and there is not much
concern about potential dangers of transgenic traits now in
existence, according to committee member and conservation biologist
Anne R. Kapuscinski, founding director of the
Institute for Social, Economic, and Ecological Sustainability at the
University of Minnesota in St. Paul. But it is impossible to
determine what percentage of GMOs will require bioconfinement. “We
didn't get more quantitative than that because there is so much
uncertainty,” said at a press conference announcing the report.
Biotechnology Project Director Gregory Jaffe at the Center for Science in the
Public Interest in Washington called on the federal government to
adopt the report's recommendations immediately. “Until the science
surrounding reliable confinement methods catches up with product
development, only [genetically engineered] organisms determined to
be safe without the need for strict confinement should be
commercialized,” Jaffe told The Scientist. “Risky
applications of genetic engineering—such as producing vaccines or
other drugs in food crops—should not be allowed.”
Val Giddings, vice president of agriculture of the Biotechnology
Industry Organization, a trade group, said the report confirms “that
technology providers have a variety of methods available to ensure
confinement of organisms modified through biotechnology when risk
warrants it.”
Among the report's conclusions:
• Whether a new organism should be confined (and, if so, how)
should be judged on a case-by-case basis early in the organism's
development
• Most proposed confinement methods have not yet been
experimentally tested
• Pharmaceuticals and other chemicals that should be kept out of
the food supply should be produced in nonfood organisms
• Evaluation of GMOs should be transparent, with results
available to the public
• GMOs ignore national boundaries, so international cooperation
is needed to regulate them
• The possibility of human error should be taken into account
The report noted in its survey of bioconfinement methods that
they fall under three headings: reducing the spread of GMOs,
reducing unintended gene flow into other organisms, and limiting
_expression_ of transgenes. For plants, researchers have developed
both actual and theoretical methods that target reproduction, but
most are untested. Induction of triploidy can prevent cell division
and reproduction in finfish and mollusks, but the method can fail
and has yet to be tried in other spec

Sitchin's Sumerian Astronomy Refuted
by Chris Siren
Here's a repost of my take on Sitchin from reading Genesis Revisited. I send this out to people who ask me about Sitchin through my Sumerian or Assyro-Babylonian Mythology FAQs. I don't include it in the FAQ because I don't want to lend legitimacy to his writings. Now my interest in Mesopotamian mythology is purely amateur, but I have done a fair amount of research into it and I am also a physics doctoral student with a special interest in astronomy and astrophysics so I have a little insight into the astronomical aspects of this:
Enough people have written to me about his astronomical ideas that I have developed a form reply which I include below. As for the genetic engineering business, I don't think that holds much water either. This much is true: there are myths from Mesopotamia dating back to about 4000 years ago which describe the creation of man. In a couple of versions of those myths man is created in order to do the work that the minor gods, the Igigi, don't wish to do. In one version, a god who is mentioned no where else, Geshtu-e, is killed and his blood is mixed with clay to create the first humans. This bit is where Sitchin gets the idea of genetic engineering. Later, Enlil, the ruling god, gets tired of the noise that man is making and starts sending disasters after him, including the flood. In another version of the creation of man story, more in-line with the Sumerian version, man is created with clay, but without any blood. Several flawed versions are fashioned before the final form is arrived upon. I think these myths speak more to the desire of the appreciation of human life and the desire to see the divine within humanity than hint at alien designs.
His planetary identifications don't sit well with me. I have yet to see any evidence, such as an ancient sky chart or telescope, that would suggest that the Sumerians could have possibly seen Neptune or Pluto, or that they noticed Uranus. Uranus is only visible with the naked eye on the clearest of nights, moves so slowly that one would have to watch it over years to notice movement without telescopic aid, and fails to show up on any known pre-Galilean sky charts.
(I've seen the diagram he claims comes from this Berlin cylinder seal in Genesis Revisited, but the "planets":
a) seem out of proportion compared to their relative sizes in reality (which is how one would expect one informed by the Annunaki to depict them)
b) they are also not in proportion to the relative brightness of those objects as seen from Earth (which one might expect had the Sumerians heard about them from someone else and then figured out how to find them).
c) it's not clear to me from that sketch what the Sumerians identified those objects as. The central object --- the 8 pointed star with the circle in the middle, was often associated with Ishtar/Inanna as the morning or evening star. I have some suspicion that if the seal is meant to be a depiction of the heavens, it might be a map of a region of the sky as the planet Venus (or perhaps another planet, but not the sun, which was usually depicted as a disk or a winged disk) against a background of stars.
d) for an outsider's description of the solar system, it seems particularly odd. Why include Pluto, but not its moon Charon, which is very large in proportion to it? Why include Pluto, but not the asteroid Ceres, which is about 1/2 the diameter of Pluto? Why include Pluto and Mercury and not include those moons in the solar system which are larger than those two planets? Why no depiction of Saturn's rings?
Below I list what planets were identified by what names by the Sumerians, It also seems clear from the mythology that Tiamat and Ea were both associated with the Abyssal waters (the Apsu) beneath the mountains and underworld as well as those same waters which lay above the dome of the sky. Ea was designated one band of space in the sky by the Babylonians, but it did not include all of the zodiacal region - which would have fit for a planet - but only the southern most portion, which a planet might wander through during one sixth of its orbit. This makes sense as the Persian Gulf, a source of an outflow of those Abyssal waters, lay to the south of Sumer. The stars in his region would be below the horizon to the south for most of the time. Anu held a similar region to the north of the celestial equator, only covering 1/6 th of the zodiacal region. The stars in his region would be above the horizon longer, which is fitting as he was the god of the heavens. Tiamat was split in to two - her celestial half forming all the heavens, and her eyes and lower half going to the waters beneath the earth and being used as the source of rivers and oceans. I have not seen her associated with a particular celestial body. I think Sitchin is over interpreting the Ennuma

Peace Lessons From History: In Their Own Words: Financing
Dictators. "From the very moment Hitler came to power, and destroyed the
labour movement in Germany, the National Government [of Britain B.M.] has
been the main power which has helped Hitler by every political and
financial means."h(British labour leader Harry Pollitt, 1938.)"From
1924 to 1929 a passion amounting almost to mania developed in the City of
London for lending money to Germany."(Lord Boothby, 1934.) "Recently
reports have come to me that American banks are contemplating large new
credits and loans to Italy and Germany whose war machines are already large
enough to threaten the peace of the world. I have even heard, but it seems
unbelievable to me, that Mr. Bullitt is lending encouragement to these
schemes."(US Ambassador to Germany William Dodd, Jan 27 1937.) "Who
finances Germany? Without this country as a clearing house for payments and
the ability to draw on credits... Germany could have not have pursued her
plans... Time and again Germany has defaulted on her obligations, public and
private; but she has gone on buying wool, cotton, nickel, rubber and petrol
until her requirements were fulfilled, and the financing has been done
directly or indirectly through London..."(Stock Exchange Gazette, May 3
1935.)"We regret to admit that from a small but rather influential circle
in the City of London, there flows a constant stream of propaganda in
favour of credits for Germany. These propagandists say that a loan to
Germany would be a twofold investment. We could buy off German
aggression, and by propping up an admittedly desperate and faithless
tyranny we could prevent Germany from falling into Communism."(From the
City journal "The Banker", Feb 1937.)"There can be no doubt that practically
the whole of the free exchange available to Germany for the purchase of raw
materials was supplied directly and indirectly by Great Britain.  If
the day of reckoning ever comes, the liberal attitude of the British
Government in this matter may well be responsible for the lives of many
British soldiers and civilians. War materiel which will eventually be used
against this country could never have been produced but for the
generosity with which Great Britain is giving her enemy free exchange
for the purchase of raw materials."(British economist Paul Einzig,
"World Finance 1938-1939.")"Huge German orders for rubber and copper were
executed in London yesterday regardless of cost. The buying of nearly 3,000
tons of copper sent the price rocketing... Already Germany has bought over
10,000 tons this month in London alone. The London Rubber Exchange
enjoyed almost a record turnover owing to a German order for 4,000 tons.
The price shot up... Germany is reported to have bought 17,000 tons already
this month - two months' normal supply."(News Chronicle Aug 19 1939. - 15
days before war started.)"Only thirteen days before war was declared; 17,000
tons of rubber, 8,000 tons of copper, large quantities of tin and lead, and
other materials necessary for armaments were furnished by Britain to
Germany."(British historian Ivor Montagu, in "The Traitor
Class.")"To execute the orders in time, heavy withdrawals were made from
stores in the UK. A third of our stocks of rubber and a quarter of our
stocks of nickel have gone and are now on their way to Germany. All
deliveries have to be made by September 1st. Mr Burgin, Minister of Supply,
had the power to ban the deals, but refused to do so."(Evening Standard Aug

 Earth 'Entering Uncharted Waters'

 By Alex Kirby

 BBC News Online Environment Correspondent

The Earth has entered a new era, one in which human beings may be the dominant force, say four environmental leaders.

In the International Herald Tribune, they say the uncertainty, magnitude and speed of change in many of the Earth's systems is without precedent.

The four, who include Margot Wallstrom, the European environment commissioner, say uncertainty cannot excuse inaction.

They believe humanity may cross some critical thresholds unawares, setting off changes which cannot be reversed.

Change at a Gallop

The other authors are Professor Bert Bolin, founding chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; Professor Paul Crutzen, winner of the 1995 Nobel prize for chemistry; and Dr Will Steffen, director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP).

There are Significant Risks of Rapid and Irreversible Changes

Their article, "The Earth's Threatened Life-Support System: A Global Wake-Up Call," marks the publication of an IGBP book, "Global Change and the Earth System: A Planet Under Pressure."

They write: "Our planet is changing fast. Change is a fact of life, but in recent decades many environmental indicators have moved outside the range of variation of the last half million years...

"It is the magnitude and rate of human-driven change that are most alarming.

"The human-driven increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide is nearly 100 parts per million and still growing - already equal to the entire range experienced between an ice age and a warm period such as the present.

"And this human-driven increase has occurred at least 10 times faster than any natural increase in the last half million years."

They envisage the possibility, beyond 2050, of "rapid regional climate change, as would be caused by changes in ocean circulation in the North Atlantic, and irreversible changes, such as the melting of the Greenland ice sheet and the concomitant sea-level rise of six metres".

No Compass

The authors write: "The Earth has entered the so-called Anthropocene - the geologic epoch in which humans are a significant and sometimes dominating environmental force.

"Records from the geological past indicate that never before has the Earth experienced the current suite of simultaneous changes: we are sailing into planetary terra incognita."

They argue for a precautionary approach, partly because natural systems can flip very rapidly from one stable state to another.

The writers say: "We are unsure of just how serious our interference with Earth system dynamics will prove to be, but... there are significant risks of rapid and irreversible changes to which it would be very difficult to adapt."

Dr Steffen told BBC News Online: "It would take about a millennium for the Greenland ice sheet to melt. But we could reach the trigger point that makes the process unstoppable within the next century.

"The book makes the point that this is global change - it looks at the range of effects, at how they're happening simultaneously, and at how they're reinforcing each other.

"It's a synthesis of the science, the best consensus - and it honestly acknowledges the unknowns."

Subject: NZ study cracks origin of English language
Modern researchers are finally coming to conclusions that Identity Christians have always known. As it is, they only have half of the story.-hengist Auckland University researchers have stunned academics worldwide by tracing the origins of the English language to 'Turkish' (geographical term only!)  farmers.  Using a novel approach to develop an Indo-European language tree, the researchers say they have evidence that the roots of the English language go back about 9000 (sic) years to Turkey.
It was thought the language was spread either by rampaging Kurgan horsemen who swept down into Europe and the Near East from the steppes of Russia 6000 (sic) years ago, or by farmers from Anatolia (modern Turkey) who had tilled their way westwards several millenniums earlier. Professor Gray, an evolutionary biologist in the university's psychology department, said yesterday that his results showed only the latter theory could be correct.
Professor Gray said Hittite (an extinct Anatolian language) was the first major language group to branch from the Indo-European trunk. Over subsequent millenniums the same trunk sprouted Tocharian, (located--eventually-- in Western China) Armenian, Greek, Albanian, Iranian, Indic, Slavic, Baltic, Germanic, French/Iberian, Italic and Celtic language groups. ~~ The good professor needs to continue his studies. 'Tis not quitethat simple. The Celtic languages present a problem, especiallyWelsh, which exhibits a very strong Hebrew character--modernstudents of language attempt to brush this off as a 'Hamitic'influence. (Even English for that matter has some 75 percent ofit's basic (Anglo-Saxon) vocabulary derived from Hebrew, but the Welsh is a more startling example.)  Several other scholars have noted the extraordinary affinity betweenHebrew and the Welsh languages. Dr. Davies, in his 'Welsh
Grammar'tells us that almost every page of the Welsh translation of the Bibleis replete with Hebraisms, in the time, sense and spirit of the original.Another authority, Dr Duncan M'Dougal, says: "You can take any sentence in Hebrew and change it into Gaelic, word for word, without altering the order of a single word or particle, and you willhave the correct Gaelic idiom in every case. You cannot do that withany other language in Europe. Rev. Eliezer Williams, (born 1754) Vicar of Lampeter, Britain, and a Chaplin in Britain's Royal Navy,  is noted as a researcher and prolific writer on ancient Celtic tribes. He wrote the following: "Scarcely a Hebrew root can be discovered that has not its corresponding derivation in the ancient British language...In Richard's Welsh and English Dictionary (pub. Bristol, 1750) and in several other philological works, the affinity of the Welsh bears to the Hebrew language is
strenuously maintained. But not only do the words themselves indicate that similarity between the two; their variations and inflexions afford a much stronger proof of affinity." Welsh scholars and writers of early days also noticed a remarkablycloser resemblance between the ancient British (Welsh) and theHebrew language. In some unaccountable way, these early studies received little attention by modern scholars. We will examine a fewwords to show how closely the Hebrew and Welsh languagesresemble each other, both in sound and sense, leaving no doubtto the Eastern descent of the Celts. Many of the words, it will beseen, have been transmitted into our modern English: (Taken from'British History Traced from Egypt and Palestine -- Rev. L.G.A.Roberts, Com. R.N., 1927) WELSH

      Henry
Kissinger, a Jewish refugee from Germany, rose to become a
powerful Secretary of State. Kissinger rose to power by interrogating members
of the Nazi SS after World War II to determine who should
be prosecuted. On the other hand, via the Central Intelligence Agency,
he was instrumental in bringing Nazi scientists who conducted human
  experiments to America under “Operation
Paperclip”. In a January 1961 closed door
  Congressional session, Col. Michael Goleniewski,
the highest ranking Polish intelligence officer, exposed Kissinger, whose
code name was BOR, as one of many Communist agents in the ODRA spy network.
Nevertheless, Kissinger went on to serve as National Security Advisor for
Richard Nixon and had been put forward by President George W. Bush to chair
an investigation into the origins of 9/11 but who subsequently resigned
because of his refusal to disclose his firm’s overseas clients. (Ref: Robert Pelton, Traitors, Treason and

ART & FASCISM

BY SAM SMITH

Abraham Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League has accused artist Hans
Haacke of "trivializing the Holocaust" by creating analogies between Mayor
Giuliani and Adolph Hitler. Said Foxman, the work "denigrates the memory
of six million Jews and others who were killed by the Nazis."

Foxman's contribution to the Giuliani campaign illustrates the growing
confusion over the nature of fascism, spurred in no small part by a form of
historical revisionism that essentially reduces the Second World War to a
matter of anti-Semitism. In some ways this revisionism is more dangerous
than the claim that the Holocaust never happened, since the denials are
safely on the fringe while the myth that fascism is inexorably linked to anti-
Semitism is widely held.

One of the reasons we have such difficulty perceiving our current
conditions is our aversion to this single word: fascism. While there is no
hesitation by politicians to draw parallels with the Holocaust to justify
whatever foreign adventure appeals to them, or for the media to make
similar analogies at the drop of swastika on a wall, we seem only able to
understand -- or even mention -- the climax of fascism rather than its
genesis. Why this reluctance? Perhaps it is because we are much closer to
the latter than to the former.

In any case, it is one of the most dangerous forms of political myopia in
which to indulge. Italians, who invented the term fascism, also called it the
estato corporativo: the corporatist state. Orwell rightly described fascism
as being an extension of capitalism. It is an economy in which the
government serves the interests of oligopolies, a state in which large
corporations have the powers that in a democracy devolve to the citizen.
Today, it is no exaggeration to call our economy corporatist, which has
been described by British academics R.E. Pahl and J. T. Winkler as a system
in which the government guides privately owned businesses towards order,
unity, nationalism and success."

"Let us not mince words, they said. "Corporatism is fascism with a human
face." The Nazis had their own word for it: wehrwirtschaft, semantically
linking wehr (for defense, bulwark, weapon) with wirtshaft (for
housekeeping, domestic economy, husbandry) to describe an economy
based on the assumption of warfare. The concept was not new, however.
William Shirer points out in The Rise and the Fall of the Third Reich that
18th and 19th century Prussia devoted 70% of its revenue to the army and
"that nation's whole economy was always regarded as primarily an
instrument not of the people's welfare but of military policy." In Hitler's
Germany even the pogroms were part of national economic planning,
seizing Jewish shops and companies and replacing Jewish workers with the
Ayrian unemployed.

Hitler argued that "private enterprise cannot be maintained in a
democracy," and denounced "the freedom to starve," in a country which
had known as many as six million without jobs. Wrote William Shirer, "In
taking away that last freedom, Hitler assured himself of the support of the
working class."

The link between business and fascism was clear to German corporatists.
Auschwitz was not just a way to get rid of Jews, it was also a major source
of cheap labor. As Richard Rubenstein points out in The Cunning of
History, "I.G. Farben's decision to locate at Auschwitz was based upon the
very same criteria by which contemporary multinational corporations
relocate their plants in utter indifference to the social consequences of
such moves." I.G. Farben invested over a billion dollars in today's money at
Auschwitz and, thanks to the endless supply of labor, adopted a policy of
deliberately working the Jewish slaves to death. In such ways do

Cutting Edge: I Met Osama bin Laden

Sydney Morning Herald (www.smh.com.au)

By Alexa Moses
January 20, 2004

Everyone who met the man seems to agree his manner is modest and gentle, and
he speaks quietly. Apparently, he likes horse riding, has been known to
recite Arabic poetry, he's 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 metres) tall and has soft
hands. No, it's not an ad from the personals section; it's a few choice
details about terrorist Osama Bin Laden.

This British documentary comprises interviews with people who have met Bin
Laden, including secret police, Bin Laden's English teacher, and journalists
from Time magazine and London's Independent. It doesn't reveal much
information about the man who is believed to have engineered the September
11 attacks that isn't already in the public arena, but the documentary is a
solid, intelligent summary of Bin Laden's life. The story follows his path
from a young student to a financier of Afghanistan in the war against the
Soviet Union, and finally to a fully-fledged terrorist. One of the most
chilling moments occurs when journalist Robert Fisk quotes Bin Laden, who
said years before the September 11 attacks that he prayed God would permit
him to turn the US into a shadow of itself. Exactly what you'd expect, but
effective.

FBI arrests 20 members including acting boss of Bonanno mafia family
Web posted at: 1/21/2004 2:28:47
Source ::: AFP
NEW YORK: Hundreds of police and FBI agents arrested more than 20 members of
the Bonanno crime family yesterday, decapitating the organisation's already
wounded leadership structure.

Acting family boss Anthony Urso and acting underboss Joseph Cammarano were
among those picked up in the early morning raids and charged with murder and
racketeering conspiracy.

Federal prosecutors unsealed a 20-count indictment that charged 27 members
and associates of the Bonanno family, including eight present or former
"capos."

"Today's indictment caps a year-long series of indictments that represent
the broadest and deepest prosecution ever of a New York City-based organised
crime family," said US Attorney Roslynn Mauskopf.

"The entire leadership, acting leadership and virtually every criminal
leader in the Bonanno family stands either convicted or under indictment,"
Mauskopf said.

Since March 2002, more than 70 members and associates of the Bonanno family
have been prosecuted.

Mauskopf said the investigation had been aided by the unprecedented
agreement of a "made member" of the family to wear a wire during
conversations with his associates.

"We had front row seats, listening as these career criminals described
murdering innocent victims in a desperate effort to salvage their crumbling
criminal enterprise," she said.

The indictment unsealed yesterday charges 18 defendants with 15 murders and
murder conspiracies.

Among those arrested was Bonanno family soldier Vito Rizzuto, referred to by
Canadian law enforcement as the "godfather of the Italian mafia in
Montreal." Rizzuto has been charged with multiple murders and Mauskopf said
his extradition would be sought from Canada.

In January last year, a grand jury indicted Bonanno family boss Joseph
Massino and his underboss Salvatore Vitale on various racketeering charges.

Those charges have been expanded to include eight murders, murder
conspiracies and attempted murders.

Pasquale D'Amuro, assistant director of the FBI's New York office, said the
four-year long investigation of the Bonanno family had resulted in the
almost total breakdown of the mafia code of silence, or "omerta," with many
family members agreeing to work with law enforcement agents.

"Instead of beating people up, they are beating down our doors in an effort
to cooperate," D'Amuro said.

Reputed Montreal Mafia boss arrested for alleged involvement in U.S.
killings
Tuesday January 20, 2004

MONTREAL (AP) The reputed head of the Montreal Mafia was arrested by local
police Tuesday to face extradition on U.S. charges of racketeering and
murder dating back to 1981.

Vito Rizzuto was arrested at his Montreal home at the request of U.S.
authorities, according to Justice Department spokesman Patrick Charette in
Ottawa.

Documents released by the U.S. Justice Department said Rizzuto has been
charged in the slayings of three high-ranking members of the rival Bonanno
Mafia family Alphonse (Sonny Red) Indelicato, Philip (Phil Lucky) Giaccone
and Dominick (Big Trin) Trinchera more than two decades ago.

Rizzuto could be jailed for 20 years if convicted, American authorities
said.

New Internet Virus Spreading Fast
By REGAN MORRIS Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - A new Internet virus was spreading fast throughout Asia,
Australia and Europe but computer security experts were divided on the
seriousness of the threat from the "Bagle" worm, and reckoned home users
were most at risk.

Experts expected some impact in the United States when people returned to
work Tuesday after a holiday weekend.

The "Bagle" or "Beagle" worm arrives in an e-mail with the subject "hi" and
the word "test" in the message body. If the accompanying attachment is
executed, the worm is unleashed and tries to send itself to all e-mails
listed in the user's address book.

Sometimes the attachment is designed to look like a Microsoft calculator,
said David Perry, spokesman for antivirus software firm Trend Micro Inc.

The virus only affects machines running Microsoft Windows operating systems.

"It's clumsy," Perry said from Lake Forest, Calif., adding that most people
knew better than to click on an attached calculator: "I don't get e-mails
with calculators in it, do you?"

The worm started spreading on Monday and most corporations have already
protected themselves against it, Perry said.

Carey Nachenberg, chief architect of Symantec Research Labs in Cupertino,
Calif., said home users, not corporations, were most at risk because
companies had protected themselves quickly.

"We could see this fizzle out in several days," Nachenberg said. "Or we
could also see a lot of people infected" if they don't update their
antivirus software

Subject: Surprise! Surprise! - War Criminal And Murderer Wesley
Clark Defends U.S Army "School of Assassins"

Forward from
mart.Surprise! Surprise! - War Criminal
And Murderer, Wesley Clark Defends U.S Army "School of
Assassins"[ "Nineteen graduates
also were involved in
the killings of seven
Jesuit priests and two
of their co-workers in El
Salvador in 1989."]
-The graduates (and a whole lot more than just the
19 mentioned here) of this school have not just
murdered "seven Jesuit priests and two of their
co-workers in El Salvador" as the article attempts
to imply, but literally *many hundreds of thousands*
of innocent people throughout all of Central and
South America and the Carribbean. The leaders of
every right wing military coup that has taken place
anywhere in the Americas in the last 40 years have
graduated from the U.S Army S.O.S.  - mart["At a retirement home in Concord this
month, one woman told Clark
that the school's
graduates have been accused of
murder. Clark
responded that when white-collar criminals are
arrested for fraud, nobody
faults their alma mater"]

- Nice try. The difference is that most ordinary
schools do not specifically teach or offer courses
in white collar crime, fraud and theft, while the of
the whole purpose of the U.S. Army "School of
Assassins" is to teach murder, torture, subversion
and terrorism -

Globe  Saturday, January 17, 2004 Facing
Questions, Clark Backs
Army School
by Joanna Weiss   CONCORD, N.H. --
Retired General Wesley K. Clarksometimes downplays his Army background,
andcriticizes the military's "don't ask, don't tell"policy on gays. But
there is one military institutionhe vigorously defends: the controversial
academy onceknown as the US Army School of the Americas.Opposition
to the school, which trains militaryofficers from Latin American countries,
has long beena cause celebre among some Democrats and liberalactivists,
who say the academy has trained some of themost notorious criminals of the
region and teachesskills that Latin American armies sometimes useagainst
their own citizenry. Supporters of the schoolpoint to reforms from the
1990s, and say its coursesteach foreign soldiers about democracy and
humanrights. But many critics have not wavered in their
opposition, and voters on the campaign trail -- in New Hampshireand
elsewhere -- have been questioning Clark about hissupport.Clark
never headed the school but had dealings with itwhen he led the US Southern
Command from 1996 to 1997.He delivered a graduation speech there in 1996 and
haspraised the school before Congress. George Bruno, thecochairman of
Clark's New Hampshire campaign and aformer ambassador to Belize, was a paid
adviser to theschool when it reopened with a new charter in
2001.Now, on the stump, Clark strongly defends the school, without
denying that some graduates have committedatrocities in their home
countries. At a retirement home in Concord this month, one womantold
Clark that the school's graduates have beenaccused of murder. Clark
responded that whenwhite-collar criminals are arrested for fraud,
nobodyfaults their alma mater."There's been a lot of rotten people
who've gone to alot of rotten schools in the history of the world,"Clark
said. "And a lot of them went to this school. But a lot of them have gone to
Harvard Business Schooland a lot of other places."The US Army School
of the Americas, created in 1946,has been located since the 1960s in a
building at FortBenning, Ga., and trains 800 to 1,000 Latin
Americanmilitary officers each year, in courses that last fromsix weeks
to one year. Former Panamanian leaderGeneral Manuel Noriega is a graduate,
along with someof the most notorious criminals of Latin America, critics
say. Nineteen graduates also were involved inthe killings of seven Jesuit
priests and two of theircoworkers in El Salvador in 1989.Allegations
against the school intensified in 1996,after the Pentagon declassified a
report that saidmanuals used there in the 1980s advocated
fightinginsurgents with execution, blackmail, kidnapping,
andtorture. In 1997, as commander in chief of the US
SouthernCommand, Clark praised the school before the SenateArmed
Services Committee, saying its mission hadchanged since the Cold War days.
"This school is thebest means available to ensure that the armed
forcesin Latin America and the armies in Latin Americaunderstand US
values and adopt those values as theirown," Clark said at the
time. But some members of Congress, including Massachusetts'late
Representative J. Joseph Moakley and formerRepresentative Joseph P. Kennedy

The statue of a Colt Python revolver (a civilian weapon); its barrel twisted into a
knot, in a courtyard in front of the UN building.

"Interestingly enough, Lincoln P. Bloomfield's son, Lincoln P. Bloomfield Jr., is
helping to implement the globalist UN disarmament vision as the Bush administration's
assistant secretary for political-military affairs. In a June 28th address, the
younger Bloomfield endorsed the objectives of the UN's Small Arms Conference on behalf
of the Bush administration. Toward the end of his remarks, he made this very
interesting observation: "By definition, lawful manufacture, trade and possession [of
firearms] are under some form of national control." This assertion flatly contradicts
the Second Amendment, which explicitly bars our federal government from imposing any
form of national control over the individual right to keep and bear arms."

"We strongly endorse community initiatives ... to encourage the disarming of
civilians"

  - Our Global Neighborhood,
published in 1995 by the UN-funded
  Commission on Global Governance.

"So quietly that even the gun lobby hasn't noticed, the United
Nations is beginning to set its sights on global gun control."
  - Associated Press, May 24, 1994

"Some progress is already being made as States [nations] tighten
their arms export legislation and collect and destroy surplus weapons."

  - UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in his 2000 report to the General
Assembly

"States [nations] emerging from conflicts should, as soon as
practicable, impose or reimpose licensing requirements on all civilian possession of
small arms and light weapons"

  - 1997 UN "Panel of Governmental Experts on Small Arms" report

Are you concerned that the United Nations...
...is anti-gun?

A UN disarmament film, Armed to the Teeth, states that only those guns that are
"used by armies and police forces to protect us" can be considered "legal." On the
other hand, privately owned firearms are portrayed as a pestilence: "Small arms are
not fussy about the company the keep. They an murder indiscriminately...Small arms are
like uninvited guests who won't leave. Once they take over a country, the are
virtually impossible to get rid of." The anti-gun statue at UN Headquarters in New
York City accurately reflects the organization's anti-gun bias.

Are you concerned that the United Nations...
...has already disarmed civilian populations?

A 1999 UN "Small Arms" report approvingly noted a number of gun control measures in
various countries, including weapons turn-in and destruction programs. UN forces have
already been used to disarm civilian populations in Kosovo, Haiti, and Somalia. This
same policy is likely to be implemented here -- if our leaders continue to transfer
more power to the UN.

Are you concerned that the United Nations...
...plans to disarm civilians as part of its program to disarm nations?

The UN-funded Commission on Global Governance (CGG) called for civilian as well as
international disarmament programs in a 1995 report entitled Our Global Neighborhood.
In the chapter "Promoting Security," the CGG claimed: "Militarization today not only
involves governments spending more than necessary to build up their military arsenals.
It has increasingly become a global societal phenomenon, as witnessed by the rampant
acquisition and use of increasingly lethal weapons by civilians -- whether individuals
seeking a means of self-defense, street gangs, criminals, political opposition groups,
or terrorist orgganizations." Note that civilians "seeking a means of self-defense"
constitute a security threat -- juts like "street gangs" or "criminals." In 1997 UN
Secretary-General Kofi Annan endorsed a "Small Arms" report that defined as small arms
such weapons as "revolvers and self-loading pistols" and "rifles and carbines."

Are you concerned that the United Nations...
...threatens to abolish the Second Amendment?

The 1997 UN "Small Arms" report recommended the "All States [nations] should ensure
that they have in place adequate laws, regulations and administrative pro

IOWA: Ten Talking Points
Capital Games by David Corn
viewed Jan. 20, 2003 at 5:30pm
http://www.thenation.com/capitalgames/index.mhtml?bid=3&pid=1196

1. It's not the movement, it's the man. Voters vote for a person, not
the forces he or she unleashes. Howard Dean did birth a movement of
sorts. It has been made up in part of political newcomers outraged by
the war in Iraq and George W. Bush's lies. The rise of this Internet-
fueled activism was the story of the campaign--until Iowa. When the
voting started, the only issue was the candidates, not their troops.
Dean was judged on his own. And he did not sufficiently impress the
caucus attendees. Was it his gaffes? Did he come across as too angry,
too unsteady, or not experienced enough? The reasons don't matter. In
the electoral arena, a movement can only go so far as its leader can
carry it.

2. The war didn't matter. An entrance poll taken at the caucuses
showed that 75 percent of the attendees opposed the war in Iraq. But
only 14 percent said the war had influenced their selection of a
nominee. This somewhat explains Dean's slide. The candidates who had
voted to grant Bush authorization for war garnered 81 percent of the
vote. The two antiwar candidates--Dean and Dennis Kucinich--attracted
19 percent. Voters who disagreed with Kerry and Edwards on the war
were still willing to support them. Why? Perhaps the old cliche of
political consultants provides the explanation: elections are about
the future, not the past. Even if voters were on the same side as Dean
on the war, it did not mean they believed he would be able to beat
Bush or be able to handle the national security challenges that lie
ahead. Being right only gets you so far. A candidate has to offer more
than that. The Iowa returns indicate the war has not yet become an
overwhelmingly divisive--or decisive--political issue.

3. Voters want to be reassured, not merely fired up. Dean had the
passion. He pumped up the volume. (He shouted like a madman on
election night, promising to win the primaries to come.) His message
and method certainly struck a nerve and drew hundreds of thousands of
Americans to his campaign. But the Iowa caucuses suggest that Dean did
not inspire confidence among caucus goer. Are voters--particularly in
the post-9/11 era--looking for leaders who not only can express
outrage but who can also project calm and strength?

4. Negative campaigning works. Dean's drop was not entirely of his own
making. He was battered by his competitors, and the media attention he
drew was often caustic. Negative ads tend to take a toll--especially
when they are relentless. Unfortunately for Gephardt, his attacks on
Dean also appeared to have damaged his own campaign and created an
opening for Kerry and Edwards. Is there a lesson here for the general
election? Perhaps. Bush will have $200 million or so to spend in the
months before the summer. That can buy a lot of mud to hurl at
whomever winds up the Democratic nominee. But also the Democratic
nominee will have to figure out how to balance his attacks against
Bush with a positive, upbeat message.

5. Special interests are bad. Every Democratic candidate in Iowa
bashed special interests. Each promised that if he were elected he
would do battle with HMOs, drug companies, insurance firms,
agribusiness, power companies and the like. On election night, John
Kerry stood before a banner that read, "Fighting for Us," and
proclaimed, "I have a special message for the special interests that
call the Bush White House home: We're coming. You're leaving. And
don't let the door hit you on your way out." This was bad news for the
corporate-funded Democratic Leadership Council wing of the party,
which has often counseled against class warfare or corporate-bashing.
Populist rhetoric (which, of course, is different from populis
