-Caveat Lector- The ignorant American voter Jeff Jacoby October 25, 2004 Not long after Dr. Johnson's landmark Dictionary of the English Language appeared in 1755, a woman demanded to know why he had defined pastern as the knee of a horse. Johnson's reply was refreshingly candid: Ignorance, madam, pure ignorance. We should all be so ignorant. Johnson may not have known a pastern from a fetlock, but he knew enough to write an entire dictionary -- all 2,300 pages and 43,000 entries of it -- single-handedly. Alas, our own ignorance is of an entirely different order. Consider, as Ilya Somin has been considering this election season, what Americans don't know about politics and public policy. Somin, a law professor at George Mason University, observes in a new study for the Cato Institute that voters tend to be abysmally ignorant of even very basic political information. This may not be news to scholars, who have documented it in depressing detail, but the sheer depth of most individual voters' ignorance is shocking to observers not familiar with the research. He offers some recent illustrations. According to polls taken this year, nearly 65 percent of the public doesn't know that Congress has banned partial-birth abortion. Seventy percent is unaware that a massive drug benefit has been added to Medicare. At least 58 percent say they have heard nothing or not much about the Patriot Act, notwithstanding the enormous amount of coverage the controversial law has drawn. This is not a new problem. As Cold War tensions bristled in 1964, only 38 percent of the public knew that the Soviet Union was not a member of NATO. In 1970, only 24 percent could identify the secretary of state. In 1996, The Washington Post reported that 67 percent of Americans couldn't name their congressman and 94 percent had no idea that William Rehnquist was the chief justice of the United States. Only 26 percent knew that senators serve six-year terms and 73 percent didn't know that Medicare costs more than foreign aid. Gallup found in January 2000 that while 66 percent of the public could name the host of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? only 6 percent knew the name of the speaker of the House. Last year, a Polling Company survey found that 58 percent of Americans could not name a single federal Cabinet department. The ignorant can be found in the highest reaches of academe. Of more than 3,100 Ivy Leagues students polled for a University of Pennsylvania study in 1993, 11 percent couldn't identify the author of the Declaration of Independence, half didn't know the names of their US senators, and 75 percent were unaware that the classic description of democracy -- government of the people, by the people, and for the people -- comes from the Gettysburg Address. With so many Americans so clueless when it comes to government and public affairs, is it any wonder that political campaigns are so shrill and shallow? Or that candidates speak to voters primarily through TV spots intended to malign the other candidate's reputation? Or that presidential debates limit answers to 90 seconds and bar the contenders from engaging in actual discussion? When voters are unwilling to put any effort into learning about the issues of the day, it should come as no surprise that campaign discussions rarely move beyond vacuous soundbites -- tax breaks for the rich, freedom is on the march, wrong war, wrong place, wrong time. Somin suggests that widespread political ignorance may be, in one sense, rational: Since no individual's vote is ever likely to be decisive, no voter has an incentive to work hard at acquiring enough knowledge to make an informed choice. But by that argument, voters shouldn't bother showing up on Election Day, either. Many don't, of course, and we hear endlessly about the need to increase voter turnout. But more alarming than the tens of millions of non-voting adults are the tens of millions of adults who *do* vote despite knowing next to nothing about the candidates and the issues. It was not ever thus. A century and a half ago, ordinary Americans grappled with public controversies at a level of sophistication that would be unthinkable today. In 1858, tens of thousands of Illinois voters, many unschooled, crowded fairgrounds and public squares to watch Democratic Senator Stephen Douglas debate his Republican challenger, former Congressman Abraham Lincoln. The topics they wrestled with were among the weightiest in US history -- the expansion of slavery, the authority of the Supreme Court, the limits of popular sovereignty. The candidates spoke not for 90 seconds at a time, but for 90 *minutes* at a time. There were no spin doctors, no instant polls, no TV talking heads -- only thoughtful candidates and serious voters and the clash of ideas in the public arena. The dumbing-down of our politics is no small thing. If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, Thomas Jefferson wrote in 1816,

The 911 Commission Report has been nominated for a National Book Award for 2004, non-fiction category. The chairman of the committee that made the indecent nomination is Diane Wood Middlebrook, famed for her biography of Anne Sexton. Sexton was mind-controlled; Dr. Martin Orne was her psychiatrist. Orne happily gave tapes of therapy sessions with Sexton to Middlebrook to use in her biography. The mind control element did not come out in her book, of course, which received universal fanfare from media Mockingbirds who knew precisely how to spin the book - away, as James Carroll notes below, from psychiatric abuses. Now, the controversy over Dr. Orne¹s seeming violation of confidentiality gave the appearance of openness, a sleight-of-hand calculated to create a public stir, sell books and conceal the nature of Sexton¹s relationship with Orne. The mind control is reflected in her poetry, I¹ve heard. From mind control to 911, one cover-up to another. Middlebrook¹s resumé is attached; University of Washington is certainly significant - a number of the board members of the CIA¹s False Memory Syndrome Foundation were from this school. And Yale, well... Of particular interest to me was her marriage to a Lyman. Anne Sexton's husband was in the Navy ... Lyman is the name, as in Ray Lyman Wilbur, the notorious Stanford eugenicist. Now an acclaimed biography of Anne Sexton has appeared. When Diane Wood Middlebrook's Anne Sexton: A Biography was published in the fall of 1991, it generated ENORMOUS PUBLICITY, a RARE THING for a work about a poet, even a popular one like Sexton. The notice included a FRONT-PAGE ARTICLE in The New York Times. Of course, as one might expect in present-day America, what drew such wide attention was not poetry or fine literary biography, but the whiff of scandal. The main scandal concerned one of Middlebrook's sources. Dr. Martin T. Orne, the psychiatrist whose encouragement gave Sexton her vocation, had turned over to Middlebrook tapes he'd made of their therapy sessions. That this violated the sacred tradition of confidentiality did not stop Middlebrook from making liberal use of what the patient had said to her doctor. Because some of the material involved tales of child sexual abuse in which Sexton described herself both as victim (as a child) and as perpetrator (as a parent), some of Sexton's relatives joined the chorus of outraged psychiatrists who denounced both Orne and the book. (Few were heard denouncing either Dr. Ollie Zweizung, Middlebrook's coy pseudonym for another of Sexton's therapists, who had sex with her during regular sessions, or Dr. Constance Chase, who encouraged her to divorce her husband, leaving her more vulnerable than ever, and who then terminated her treatment.) NEW YORK, Oct. 16, 2004Philip Zelikow, a high-level national security adviser to both Bush administrations, acknowledges that America faces a new infectious disease: lack of faith in the U.S. government's 9/11 Commission report. As executive director of the freshly-retired Kean Commission, Zelikow was a principal author of the 567-page document, which purports to explain everything that matters about September 11, 2001. Sales of the 9/11 report have far outpaced those of his earlier study in statecraft, Germany Unified and Europe Transformed. He co-wrote that book in 1999 together with one of his closest associates from the original Bush White House, Condoleeza Rice. Despite blockbuster sales for the 9/11 report, Zelikow tells the Washington Post he is alarmed by the concurrent spread of conspiracy theories about the attacks, which he describes as pathogens: Our worry is when things become infectious, as happened with the [John F. Kennedy] assassination, Zelikow says. Then this stuff can be deeply corrosive to public understanding. You can get where the bacteria can sicken the larger body. (1) It's too late, Dr. Zelikow. The bacteria are winning, and your own work is to blame. Perhaps the disease would have slowed if you had showed the courage to step down as executive director last Marchwhen your resignation was demanded by the same Sept. 11 families who had fought the White House for 14 months to gain a 9/11 Commission in the first place. They saw a grave conflict of interest in your having participated in White House briefings on al Qaeda in 2000 and 2001. You did so on behalf of the incoming Bush administration, along with Dr. Rice, Richard Clarke and Sandy Berger, all of whom later testified to the Kean Commission. It is apparent that Dr. Zelikow should never have been permitted to be Executive Staff Director of the Commission, the Family Steering Committee wrote. They asked you to resign, and to take your rightful place on the other side of the table, as a witness to be questioned in the investigation, in public and under oath. (2) Perhaps this might have restored some credibility to a commission badly damaged a few months earlier when its most outspoken member, Max Cleland, resigned after condemning it as a whitewash. (3) But you ignored the families and stayed on, undeterred. You continued to steer the commission and its agenda. You stayed on, as one of only two staff members or commissioners with relatively unrestricted access to White House documents. (The other was Jamie Gorelick, a former high official in the Clinton administration and close associate of George Tenet. Small world.) A few weeks later, we were treated to a star turn at the hearings by your co-author, Dr. Rice, as one of the most important witnesses before the commission, even as you conducted behind the scenes. And now you worry that people won't buy what you have to say about 9/11. Guess what? They don't. A representative poll of 800 New York state residents by Zogby International found less than 40 percent of them say they believe the 9/11 Commission report answered all of the important questions about Sept. 11. (4) Sixty-six percent of New York City residents are therefore calling on the state attorney general to open a new criminal investigation, one based on the 383 questions of the Family Steering Committee, most of which the 9/11 Commission report simply ignores. Kennedy's campaign staff. Bird also noted that recipients included Frank Mankiewicz ($15,000 for a study of the Peace Corps in Latin America), Adam Walinsky ($22,200 for a study of community action programs) and Peter Edelman ($19,090 for a study of community development programs around the world). In recent years Peter Edelman has been sitting on the board of a foundation, the Public Welfare Foundation, which subsidizes the alternative media work of Chip Berlet's Political Research Associates [PRA] group. In 2002, for instance, Peter Edelman's Public Welfare Foundation gave a $50,000 grant to Political Research Associates to provide general support for research center that collects and disseminates information on extremist groups and provides information and training to local, state, and national organizations working to counter extremist activity. PRA's form 990 also indicates at least $90,000 in additional grant money was given to Political Research Associates by Peter Edelman's Public Welfare Foundation between 1993 and 1996; and in 1999, another grant of $50,000 was given to the Political Research Associates group by the Public Welfare Foundation. Prior to working as a staffperson for RFK and then receiving his Ford Foundation fellowship from former National Security Affairs advisor Bundy, Public Welfare Foundation board member Edelman worked as a law clerk to a Supreme Court Justice named Arthur Goldberg. According to the 1982 book Rooted In Secrecy: The Clandestine Element in Australian Politics by Joan Coxsedge: Arthur Goldberg, the General Counsel of the CIO engineered the expulsion of the Left from this organization...After the left-wing purge of the CIO, Goldberg worked to achieve union with the conservative American Federation of Labor [AFL] headed by rabid anti-communist and long-time CIA stooge, George Meany, and what was left of the CIO. Public Welfare Foundation board member Edelman is also both the political godfather/rabbi of U.S. Senator Hillary Rodham-Clinton and a former Clinton Administration official. According to the Center for Responsive Politics' web site, Public Welfare Foundation board member Peter Edelman also gave two campaign contributions, totalling $1,500, to Hillary Rodham-Clinton's campaign on September 26, 2000 and another $1,000 campaign contribution to SenatorRodham-Clinton's campaign on November 9, 2000. Marian Edelman of the Children's Defense Fund NGO also gave a $1,000 campaign contribution to Hillary Rodham-Clinton on November 9, 2000. In the late 1990s, the Massachusetts-based Political Research Associates [PRA] was also given a $120,000 grant by the San Francisco Foundation. This opinion is especially prevalent among conservatives, who also fault the Post for its publication (along with that other liberal icon, The New York Times) of the Pentagon Papersan action they correctly view as having made a major contribution to undermining domestic support for the war in Vietnam. During the '70s, there was an angry conservative boycott of the paper in the Washington, DC, area, with I Don't Believe the Post bumper stickers appearing on cars and WP vending boxes. At the heart of the Post's liberal reputation is the sense that its coverage represents the thinking of what used to be known as the Eastern Liberal Establishment back in the days when Republicans could be liberals (with a favorable view of internationalism and the welfare state) and before the Establishment moved to Texas and got saved by Jesus, its favorite political philosopher. This was the same period when the Central Intelligence Agency, still dominated by the Establishment Ivy Leaguers who organized the oh-so-social OSS in World War II, was also widely seen as a liberal institution. With a 21st-century perspective, where internationalism has become globalization, and monopoly capitalism is so powerful it no longer needs to mask its agenda with welfare programs, we can see the Establishment's liberalism for the ruthless neoliberalism it has always been. Yet the more powerful and elite the ruling class, the greater its need for an effective propaganda system to maintain that power; and the Washington Post remains, as writer Doug Henwood described it in 1990, the establishment's paper. In an article published by the media watchdog group, Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR), Henwood traced the Post's Establishment connections to Eugene Meyer, who took control of the Post in 1933. Meyer transferred ownership to his daughter Katharine and her husband, Philip Graham, after World War II, when he was appointed by Harry Truman to serve as the first president of the World Bank. A lifelong Republican, Meyer had been a Wall Street banker, director of President Wilson's War Finance Corporation, a governor of the Federal Reserve, and director of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, Henwood wrote. Philip Graham, Meyer's successor, had been in military intelligence during the war. When he became the Post's publisher, he continued to have close contact with his fellow upper-class intelligence veteransnow making policy at the newly formed CIAand actively promoted the CIA's goals in his newspaper. The incestuous relationship between the Post and the intelligence community even extended to its hiring practices. Watergate-era editor Ben Bradlee also had an intelligence background; and before he became a journalist, reporter Bob Woodward was an officer in Naval Intelligence. In a 1977 article in Rolling Stone magazine about CIA influence in American media, Woodward's partner, Carl Bernstein, quoted this from a CIA official: It was widely known that Phil Graham was somebody you could get help from. Graham has been identified by some investigators as the main contact in Project Mockingbird, the CIA program to infiltrate domestic American media. US marine Lieutenant Lyle Gilbert said the blast occurred about 7am at an Iraqi police post near Al Asad camp, about 180km northwest of Baghdad, between the towns of Hit and Haditha. He said there were no US casualties. About 10 people died at the scene and hospital officials in Haditha said six more died later. Officials at the Interior and Defence Ministries said they were checking for details of the attack. Sunni insurgents and militants have staged frequent attacks on US forces and fledgling Iraqi security forces as part of their campaign to drive foreign troops out of the country and undermine the US-backed interim government. Meanwhile, a suicide driver detonated a car bomb yesterday near an Iraqi National Guard checkpoint south of Samarra, killing four guardsmen and injuring six others, police said. The operation that took place in Ishaqi, 10km south of Samarra, was carried out by a suicide bomber, according to the Iraqi Police. It was the third suicide car bombing in the Samarra area this week. Late Wednesday, two car bombs exploded in Samarra, killing 10 Iraqi civilians including three children and injuring over a dozen others. Also yesterday, insurgents fired two mortar rounds in central Baghdad, killing two civilians and wounding one, witnesses said. A telephone worker said he had taken all three casualties to hospital in his car after one mortar bomb hit the Karrada commercial district. A donkey was also killed. Witnesses said the other mortar round appeared to land in the fortified Green Zone, which houses Iraqi government offices and the US and British embassies. There were no reports of casualties or damage in that blast. The Green Zone is often attacked by insurgents with mortars, rockets and car bombs. Also yesterday, saboteurs bombed two oil pipelines transporting crude from north and eastern Iraq to Baghdad's Dora refinery, oil security officials said. Major Ali Mahmoud said National Guard forces were trying to extinguish a fire which damaged 150 metres of the Khana pipeline northeast of Baghdad. He said another bomb was found yesterday along the same line and was safely defused. An oil official said saboteurs on Friday blew up a section of another oil pipeline in Mashahdeh area, around 50km north of Baghdad. The pipeline feeds the same refinery which processes 110,000 barrels per day. Insurgent attacks on Iraq's oil pipelines have disrupted refinery operations and cost the US-backed interim government billions of dollars and around $200 million (Dh730million) a month worth of refined product imports. Saboteurs hit a section of the northern oil export network on Thursday. Faces, I see suffering on so many faces, mothers weeping over their dying children, old women and men huddled in the debris left of their bulldozed home, medics carrying the lifeless body of a man whose hand rests beside his face held there by the torn shred of his sleeve, his arm gone, his body black with grime. This is a world gone mad, a madness on all sides, the madness of greed that sees in oil the riches of Sultans and Kings, the madness of arrogant pseudo-philosophers who conjure beliefs of personal superiority that gives them license to conquer and enslave, the madness of ancient minds that dreamt of power and glory in covenants with gods, the madness of fanatics that fabricate fantasy out of indecipherable images lodged in pages of metaphors, the madness of little minds that grab onto faith as the golden ring that will bring them salvation, the madness of those born again to the child's world of impossible dreams forgoing in their new world the reality of this. Today I read of depleted uranium, 1000 metric tons made from the deadly U238 isotope dropped on America's killing fields, that wafts on the wind like aerosol spray, a toxic death that sticks in human lungs, bringing a slow and painful death. I saw pictures of new born children bloated and bruised by scars, eyes missing, a nose of scar tissue and nostrils, no lips, the detritus of our advanced civilization scattered on hospital beds in Baghdad. And I wait for a word from Kerry that he, too, hears their pain, that he will stop the slaughter in Afghanistan and Iraq and Palestine ... and I wait in vain; there is no condemnation, no plan to end the conflicts, no recognition that states terrorize, no acceptance of the right of people to fight the oppressor, no confession of wrong waged against the innocent that had not the intention or the means to threaten America. It's a tradition begun after 14th century world conqueror Timur Lane invaded the region from Uzbekistan. Lane's signature was to leave behind a tower of his enemy's skulls as a warning to those who would oppose him. Welcome to Osama bin Laden's hiding place in South Waziristan of the Baluchistan Mountains of Pakistan. It's an area the United States intelligence community knows little about, and would require hundreds of thousands of troops if if the United States were to invade to get bin Laden, said Robert Baer, a CIA case officer for 21 years and an expert on the region. I doubt we have anyone in the agency that can speak Baluchi,' Baer said by telephone Friday. This is not an area we should go into lightly. This is the place that bred Khalid Sheik Mohammed and a training ground for Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. It also is my understanding that Operation Bojinka was crafted there.' Mohammed was involved in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and is considered the mastermind behind Operation Bojinka, a plan by al-Qaida to blow up at least 11 passenger airplanes in the Far East and Philippines. He was captured by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence in March 2003 and is currently in U.S. custody. Al-Zarqawi is considered the leader behind the beheadings and terrorist attacks in Iraq and one of those responsible for the March 11 Madrid bombings, which killed 191 people. He has not been captured. The fact is, our intelligence operations on the ground are abysmal,' Baer said. We cannot go into that region of the world without recruiting sources, and it is my understanding the agency hasn't done any of that since I left.' Baer, the author of several books, including See No Evil: The True Story of a Ground Soldier,' was a Middle East case officer when he left in 1997 disgusted by the agency's lack of interest in cultivating sources and recruiting field officers to gather intelligence. He blames that culture on the problems in Iraq. I believe the CIA misled President Bush on the weapons of mass destruction,' he said. The fact is they didn't have anyone on the ground that knew anything. They believed the information handed to them by Mossad (Israeli intelligence), which has never had anyone on the ground in Iraq.' Baer's comments were similar to those made Wednesday by 9-11 Commissioner John Lehman, who said the Pentagon planners drank the Kool-Aid offered them by the Mossad and the CIA,' and that is the reason we are in this post-war mess. Then every time his opponent brought up this most important of issues, George W. Bush cried foul, accusing John Kerry of hindering the war on terrorism. (America might be a democracy, but that doesn't mean the Democrat has a right to campaign.) The president's campaign enlisted the taxpayers' servants as agents of his re-election, with Secret Service officers submitting attendees at Bush rallies to ideological X-rays, and election officials systematically suppressing the franchise of groups most likely to vote Democratic. Meanwhile the president, who earned some 500,000 votes less than his opponent, busied himself ramming through a radical legislative program as if he had won by a landslide¡ªhis congressional deputies all but barring deliberative input from the opposition party in order to do it and gaming the legislative apportionment system in ways, as the counsel to one Texas representative bragged in an e-mail to colleagues, that "should assure that Republicans keep the House no matte[r] the national mood." In Washington, it has turned some once calm souls into apocalyptics. Thomas Mann is a senior fellow in governance studies at the Brookings Institution, noted for his deliberateness of manner, his decency, and his near religious devotion to the ideal of bipartisan comity. Now, he says, "I see the damage to our system and our sense of ourselves as a democratic people as really quite substantial. . . . The consequences of both the policies and the processes have been more destructive of our national interest and our democratic institutions than any president I know." When someone as level-headed as Tom Mann begins to worry for the future of our democracy, that's news. Here's something that's even more newsworthy: Spend three days talking to movers and shakers around this town and you're hard-pressed to find anyone who agrees. Even those who think the president is stealing our democratic birthright are eloquent in their excuses for why we shouldn't do anything much about it at all. Democratic insiders use politics to explain their inaction away. They've seen the focus groups: Accusations of a president draining the lifeblood from democracy just won't play in Peoria. "It's what the folks in this business, we call an 'elite argument,' " says Jeff Shesol, who was a speechwriter for President Clinton and whose firm, West Wing Writers, develops messages for some of the most prominent Democratic campaigns. "It pitches too high to reach the mass electorate." Julian Epstein, another Democratic consultant and frequent talking head, puts it more simply. "People will think you're whining," he says. Peter Fenn, a Washington advertising guru who frequently represents the Democratic side on CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC, says reaching voters on this point is hopeless: "Their eyes glaze over when you deal with process kind of issues." Yet the "process," by many accounts, is not just broken but shattered, intentionally ground into dust by Karl Rove and his Republican campaign machine. The only employee with the master key to the North Tower staircases, he led firefighters up the stairs, unlocking doors as he went, aiding in the evacuation of hundreds of additional people who, but for his efforts, might have perished. Although his job description did not include saving lives, Rodriguez re-entered the building three times after the first plane struck, and was the last person to exit the North Tower alive. After onsite treatment for his injuries, Rodriguez plunged right back into rescue efforts at the site. At dawn the next morning, Rodriguez returned to Ground Zero from his home in Jersey City, to continue to aid in rescue efforts. What at first glance appears to be a warm and fuzzy video, however when slowed down frame by frame using Final Cut Pro reveals a plethora of subliminals. These subliminals, or images which are being understood by the unconscious mind, but not recognized by the conscious mind are very disturbing. At last count I have found 32 images which show everything from: skull and bones, numerous alien faces, men in trench coats, mysterious men in black appearing for no apparent reason in random frames, curtains transforming into human faces, simulated guns to heads, bombs going off in backgrounds, oral sex, and so forth. The reason that I chose the cropped two frames above to show that subliminals exist in Changing World is because it is one of the easiest for all computer users to find in the video without requiring special software. Anyone with Quicktime or RealPlayer/Windows MediaPlayer can simply go the the 24 second mark in the video, pause, then release and pause again. To the right of each cropped image above is George Bush's head. I have shown the collection of video clips to more than 20 people, and all have walked away astounded - and angry. My desire is not to anger people, but merely to show what is actually contained in a particular video released by the Bush team. Do I see a totally different facial structure, nose, hair, eyes, ears and even shape of head in the two images above which are a mere 1/15th of a second apart? Definitely. Should I? Absolutely not. If this were the only image that was found I would still be greatly disturbed because of the content and because of the direction of where America is seemingly headed today. For years, the dominant cry concerning the police has been for more 'bobbies on the beat'. This summons up all that we think best about policing - a sort of Heartbeat-of-Dock-Drummond world of policing, with immaculate serge uniforms and a bicycle with a little bell. Over the past few years the actual number of policemen has reached an all-time zenith of 138,000 (1). Yet home secretary David Blunkett claims that there aren't nearly enough of them. Not content with having recruited 11,000 more officers since 1997, Blunkett has announced that he's going for 25,000 Community Support Officers (CSOs) by 2008 (2). To put that in perspective, that's roughly the population of Didcot. It will also bring the 'wider police family' up to 227,000, which is about the population of Derby. Hopefully now the demand for bobbies will stop, because otherwise we're going to have to institute a special children's police force, with patrolling by the under-fives, or have OAPCs who subdue criminals with stories about rationing and Werther's Originals. A CSO does not have full police powers, but it is perhaps what some would like a bobby on the beat (BOTB) to be. CSOs have the power to issue fixed penalty notices for dog fouling or riding on footpaths, and can confiscate alcohol and tobacco, though presumably only off people who shouldn't have them in the first place (3). They can 'report vandalism or damaged street furniture suspicious activity; provide crime prevention advice, deter juvenile justice and visit victims of crime', for which they require a training course (4). They can also request a name and address, although most people with the powers of speech can do that - so perhaps they have the power to get really cross if it's not provided. They can even 'detain a suspect for up to 30 minutes pending the arrival of a constable' (although what happens if said officer is a no-show is not detailed; one suspects this will lead to lots of dodgy-looking characters standing on street corners, staring at their watches, next to someone who looks a bit like a copper). Coatsworth, director of the Rockefeller Center, said: For the first time in the history of the Mexico-United States relationship, the latter can't act against its neighbor in a manner that damages significant Mexican interests without damaging its own interests... I think that the most interesting and least recognized aspect of the relations between both countries is how power has been displaced so dramatically from the United States toward Mexico. The people who keep talking about the asymmetry have to rethink it. That offers Mexico the capacity to project power toward Washington in favor of its own interests and in a way that is still not being exploited, very consistently and consciously... Coatsworth was interviewed by David Brooks and Jim Cason about the upcoming elections in the United States, prospects for changes in immigration policy, and economic issues. To be fair, I'll note that he didn't bring up drugs. But I'll also say that everything he says about the changing power dynamics between the two countries applies with exactitude to questions of drug policy. The days are over when U.S. Ambassadors and special envoys - like Washington's Charles Shapiro attempted Thursday in Bolivia (Read Alex Contreras' Narco News report on that adventure in imperial arrogance) - can threaten Mexico with similar harm if it doesn't toe the line on drug policy. McGreevey tried to extort millions of dollars from him, according to the aide's lawyer and law enforcement officials. A lawyer representing Golan Cipel, the former state homeland security adviser named by McGreevey associates as the man the governor admitted having an extra-marital affair with, said federal officials told him Cipel and a second lawyer acted properly during talks about a settlement in the weeks before McGreevey announced his resignation on Aug. 12. "I'm certain there's no chance they would be accused of a crime," attorney Paul Batista told The Philadelphia Inquirer. "As far as my job, I consider my work done." FBI spokesman Steve Kodak declined to comment Sunday, saying it is an active investigation. But other law enforcement officials familiar with the case told the newspaper that they would not dispute Batista's statements. A lawyer representing the governor disagreed with Batista's conclusion. "There's clearly evidence of extortion," said William Lawler. "It's up to the government to evaluate how the evidence fits into a total picture." The first time I ran for Congress in the '93-'94 cycle, my campaign put out 25,000 flyers on Jim Collier's book VoteScam: The Stealing of America. Vote fraud and electronic ballot machines have been one of my pet issues and crusades since 1993. I find it ironic that the ones making the most noise about this are the Democrats, bona fide experts when it comes to vote fraud. There was vote fraud in the March 1996 primary when I ran as a Republican against the nitwit incumbent, Congressman Wally Herger. Just one of the many things that happened: While I was legally on the ballot, in the largest county in the district, my name didn't even appear on the ballot in one of the biggest precincts! When all was said and done, the Secretary of State, Republican Bill Jones, refused to investigate and in his short, terse letter to me said if I didn't like the outcome of the election, sue the state. By that time, the vote had been certified and it was all over. At that point I realized the "Grand Old Party" wasn't interested in the truth or fair elections, the party was over, I kissed the GOP good bye and have never regretted my decision. Following the phony primary in 1996, I wrote a 45 page booklet titled Blind Loyalty. This little booklet is filled with page after page after page of verifiable vote fraud. It was updated in 2000; I retired it earlier this year after selling 700,000 copies. The Democrats are already gearing up to create court battles in many states of the Union the minute the polls close on election day. One columnist recently wrote "If the abuses continue, we may have reached the point that Jefferson foretold." He was referring to Jefferson's comment about the tree of liberty must from time to time be refreshed with the blood of patriots. There already is violence over the Bush/Kerry ticket, which I find truly pathetic considering either candidate spells more disaster for our Republic. America is going to see monstrous problems that will make Florida 2000 pale in comparison. The whole horse and pony show that you will see is going to be deliberately engineered. Certainly, the voting system in this country is a mess and there will be provable fraud, but the Democrats are determined to create chaos which will, of course, keep the people divided and their attention diverted from what's really going on behind the scenes in furtherance of a one world government. The real fraud is inside the machines I am concerned for the security of our great nation, not so much because of any threat from without, but because of the insidious forces working from within. In 1917 Woodrow Wilson's Congress enacted the Trading With the Enemy Act to regulatenot forbidtrade with belligerent nations. The language of this piece of legislation defined precisely who was, and who was not, an enemy of the United States. Specifically excluded from that classification were the citizens of the United States. That was an oversight that would be corrected three days after Franklin D. Roosevelt assumed the mantle of the presidency on March 6, 1933. During the first 100 days of Roosevelt's administration, Congress passed a litany of legislative programs ostensibly designed to stimulate the economy and send America back to work. Most of this legislation was expediently enacted with about as much congressional forethought as the Emergency Banking Relief Act. A great deal of it, like the Agricultural Adjustment Act, the National Industrial Recovery Act and the Congressional Gold Repeal Joint Resolution, violated the Constitution of the United States, and portions of those acts would be declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1935. The first of three laws designed to wrest control of the United States away from the States and the people was engineered on May 9, 1933. This law, enacted without a single Congressman or Senator reading itÑand after only 40 minutes of debate in both houses of Congress, by both partiesÑwas the Emergency Banking Relief Act. There were at least two reasons Roosevelt didn't want Congress looking too closely at the language of the Emergency Banking Relief Act. First, it restructured the banking system of the United States and placed even more monetary control in the hands of the central bankers. Second, it gave Roosevelt war powers control over the United States of America in peacetime. But most important, it changed the language of the Trading with the Enemy Act, effectively classifying the citizens of the United States as the enemies of their own central government. And, it did one other thing. It granted Roosevelt (or whomever would follow him into the White House) the right to redefine the ownership of private property in the United States. Such redefinition was necessary since the war powers authority Roosevelt was being accorded to deal with the national emergency granted him the right to seize the property of those who failed to comply with the laws which were being enacted. The right to seize the property of American citizens without due process would be one of the paramount weapons the government would continue to use long after the emergency expired. It would be a much-used weapon by the Internal Revenue Service, which has not hesitated to seize any asset or property of any American citizen without due process since 1934. In the last few years, that right has also been assumed by State and federal police agencies who now seize the assets of drug dealers and those charged with violations of the RICO actÑat the time of arrest, not conviction. Gone forever is the presumption of innocence until guilt is proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Municipalities do the same when they seize the vehicles driven by johns arrested for seeking the illicit pleasures of prostitutes in hundreds of sting operations launched each year by countless brigades of city and county police agencies throughout the country. All such laws, regardless of their deterrent qualities, and regardless if they are upheld by the courts, violate the Constitution of the United States because they deny the accused the right to due process before seizure takes placean inalienable right they possess under the Constitution of the United States. It is a troubling sign of our times that courts of law in America, regardless of the compelling interest of society to eradicate the proliferation of illegal drugs that are taking such a devastating toll on human life and dignity while breeding all other forms of crime from petty larceny to murder, would wantonly violate the Constitution of the United States under the guise of providing a safer and more secure America. The redefinition of private property rights is found in Senate Document 43 that examined, and attempted to justify, the ramifications of the powers delegated to the President under the War Powers ActÑalbeit after-the-fact. On page 9 of that document, the Senate brazenly declared: "The ultimate ownership of all property is in the State; individual so-called 'ownership' is only by virtue of the Government, i.e., law, amounting to mere user..." I just can no longer vote for the lesser of evil. No matter the degree of "lesser" ...it's still voting for evil. I've rationalized it in the past, but I can no longer fool myself. It is now time for me to realize that I would rather vote for what I wan t and not get it, than to vote for what I don't want and get it. In this election what I want most is representation. I want to vote for someone who most closely represents my beliefs and my interests. I don't think that is an outrageous expectation , do you? It is time for me to take individual responsibility for every part of my life. If I am going to delegate authority to an elected official to be my voice, that person better share my ethics. All I am asking is for the candidate to be honest and concerned with the common good. And so, a candidate who is for this war, and an active participant in the 9-11 coverup has not earned my vote. When I began to read about Skull and Bones Society, I not only learned about John Kerry and George W. Bush, but I also learned about William Sloane Coffin. I was stunned.In the sixties I respected Reverend Coffin from Riverside Church for his work as a leader in the anti-war movement. In a lot of ways he was like John Kerry to me. I thought they were both people who I felt that they had taken a principled stand against an immoral and illegal war. What I didn't know, at the time, was that they both members of the Skull and Bones Society. The only difference was that Kerry was a member before he went to Vietnam, and Coffin was a member after he had already served as a military intelligence officer and General Patton's interpreter, but before he went to work for the CIA.All of these Bonesman have such interesting resumes. The KLA is currently smuggling weapons into Kosovo as part of a plot to attack American and other UN peacekeepers, should the UN Security Counsel refuse their demand for Kosovo's secession from Serbia and Montenegro. About the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA/UCK) In order to fully understand the significance of John Kerry's involvement with the KLA it is first necessary to understand what sort of an organization the KLA is. The KLA is a terrorist organization with ties to Osama bin Laden and the Iranian government. The KLA's main objective is to break Kosovo, which has been an integral part of Serbia for centuries, away from Serbia. The KLA began on the radical fringe of Kosovo-Albanian politics, originally made up of diehard Marxist-Leninists as well as by descendants of the fascist militias raised by the Italians in World War II. [1] The KLA made its military debut in February 1996 with the bombing of several camps housing Serbian refugees from wars in Croatia and Bosnia. [2] In early 1998 the KLA caught the attention of the U.S. Special Envoy for Kosovo, Robert Gelbard. Gelbard told Agence France Presse "We condemn very strongly terrorist actions in Kosovo. The UCK is, without any questions, a terrorist group." [3] The KLA has been credibly linked to the notorious terrorist Osama bin Laden. In 1999 The Washington Times obtained intelligence documents that showed what is described as a 'link' between bin Laden, and the KLA --including a common staging area in Tropoje, Albania, a center for Islamic terrorists. The reports said bin Laden's al-Qaeda organization has both trained and financially supported the KLA. [4] In 1998 Fatos Klosi, the head of SHIK, the Albanian intelligence service, told London's Sunday Times newspaper that Bin Laden had visited Albania himself. His was one of several fundamentalist groups that had sent units to fight in Kosovo, Klosi said. [5] In 2002 the U.S. State Department issued a report giving Iran the dubious distinction of being "the most active state sponsor of terrorism." Their report went on to report that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Ministry of Intelligence and Security were involved in the planning of and support for terrorist acts and continued to exhort a variety of groups that use terrorism to pursue their goals. [6] The Jerusalem Post reported that Iranian Revolutionary Guardsmen were training the KLA in 1998. The newspaper said that "Selected groups of Albanians were sent to Iran to study that country's version of militant Islam." The same article went on to report that "millions of dollars have been funneled through Bosnia and Albania to buy arms for the KLA. The money is raised from both Islamic governments and from Islamic communities in Western Europe, particularly Germany." [7] Yossef Bodansky, the Director of the U.S. House Congressional Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare, wrote a report for the magazine Defense and Foreign Affairs Strategic Policy saying that "In the Fall of 1997, the uppermost leadership in Tehran ordered the IRGC [Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps] High Command to launch a major program for shipping large quantities of weapons and other military supplies to the Albanian clandestine organizations in Kosovo. [Ayatollah] Khamene'i's instructions specifically stipulated that the comprehensive military assistance was aimed to enable the Muslims 'to achieve the independence' of the province of Kosovo." Bodansky's article corroborates the Jerusalem Post's account. He wrote that in 1997 "the Iranians began sending promising Albanian and UCK commanders for advanced military training in al-Quds [special] forces and IRGC camps in Iran." [8] In addition to the direct financing that the KLA receives from Islamic terror organizations, the organization also relies on funds raised by the Albanian mafia. [9] The Baltimore Sun, citing western intelligence officials, reported that part of the KLA's funding comes from "powerful Albanian mafia organizations that deal in narcotics, prostitution and arms smuggling across Europe." [10] The London Times reported that the KLA was "an outgrowth of the Kosovo Albanian mafia." Their report said, "these Kosovan criminals operate the most powerful drug-running network in Europe." The damage shows up at age 7 when children have difficulty paying attention in school. "In contrast to the way real life unfolds and is experienced by young children, the pace of TV is greatly sped up." says Christakis. His research appears in the April 2004 issue of Pediatrics. Quick scene shifts of video images become "normal," to a baby "when in fact, it's decidedly not normal or natural." Christakis says. Exposing a baby's developing brain to videos may overstimulate it, causing permanent changes in developing neural pathways. "Also in question is whether the insistent noise of television in the home may interfere with the development of 'inner speech' by which a child learns to think through problems and plans and restrain impulsive responding," wrote Jane Healy, psychologist and child brain expert in the magazine's commentary. Babies brains grow rapidly Even a child playing with its own fingers has the neural patterning that comes from bending, flexing, stretching and grasping. Scientists tell us that the brain develops in completely unique ways between birth and three years. As a kiddie viddie baby sits "mesmerized", neural paths are not being created. This is crucial brain development that stops by age three. "You don't want to think that something as innocent as half-an-hour's peace and quiet could reduce your kid's chances later in life," says Claire Eaton, 27-year-old mother from Lewisham, Australia. As a student of the assassination of JFK, I was probably more attuned (not to say, "sensitive") to the possibility of deceit, deception, and distortion by the FBI and by the NTSB than were other local residents in processing information about the crash. Killing someone, even a president or a senator, is not the hard part. The hard part is covering it up. The hard part is convincing others the death was the work of "a lone, deranged gunman", for example, or that a crash must have been "an accident". A cover story is indispensable. If you only confront them one-by-one, they tend to be persuasive. If you aren't looking for small signs that something might be wrong, you are likely to miss the larger ramifications of the situation you are in. Patterns are most important. Once you become aware of the variable techniques that can be used to mislead the American people--the destruction of evidence, the fabrication of evidence, the biased use of evidence--they become easier to identify. In the case of JFK, it was indispensable to take control of the body. The Secret Service illegally removed the body from Parkland Hospital in Dallas and it was flown to Bethesda Naval Hospital, where it was completely under military control. Most Americans remain unaware to this day that the Presidential limousine was returned to Michigan where it was stripped to bare metal and completely rebuilt. That vehicle was a crime scene on wheels. That was the destruction of evidence. In the case of this crash, the bodies and the plane were a package deal. The FBI arrived with preternatural speed. Gary Ulman, the airport's assistant manager, only identified the site at 11 AM. FBI from St. Paul were on the scene by noon. By my calculations, that means they had to depart as the plane was taking off. When I learned that day that the plane was still burning, I wondered how they could actually know that the man was dead, since they had not recovered any bodies. Burned beyond recognition, they had to be identified by dental records. The FBI kept tight control of the crash scene. Even the AP reporter said that he had only been allowed fifteen minutes to do his thing. You might think the more photographs, the better the record of the crash scene. That didn't happen here. In the case of JFK, the FBI spent weeks gathering photographic evidence. A film taken facing the grassy knoll was turned over and simply disappeared. Even a chunk of skull found in the grass the following day and given to the FBI was lost. Different circumstances require different treatment. No one would have believed that JFK was not killed by a conspiracy if it had not been done in public. In that case, it was crucial to manufacture evidence that would support the official account. Distracting attention from the most important alternatives can be especially beneficial. The Warren Commission focused its attention on Lee Harvey Oswald, not on who killed JFK. The NTSB did not consider the possibility that this was no accident. It simply took the FBI's word for it. Carol Carmody, a former employee for the CIA who headed the team that studied the Wellstone crash, reported that the FBI had determined that there were no signs of "terrorist involvement" in the crash. That was odd, since it is the responsibility of the NTSB, not the FBI, to investigate the cause of the crash, which it would not determine for more than another year. How could the FBI rule out any parties without knowing what caused the crash? Even shadowy "terrorists" would have to use specific means, such as small bombs, gas canisters, or high-tech weapons. An assassination does not require "terrorists". And there was actually a connection between the copilot and Zakarias Moussaoui! None of this appears to have bothered Carmody, who had also headed up the team that investigated the Carnahan crash two years earlier. Intriguingly, the Wellstone case has been suggested as refining the technique used on Carnahan. Carnahan's plane went down three weeks before the election; his wife survived him. Frightening New Tom Bearden Document

10-24-4 In a new document by scalar scientist Tom Bearden at his website Cheniere.org Bearden brings together a great many threads of information to peer into the future of terrorism, and he proclaims that the future of terrorism will be scalar electromagnetic in nature. The dangers presented by scalar electromagnetic weapons, now being developed by at least 10 nations and several rogue groups, trump the dangers of nuclear weapons by orders of magnitude, and yet these dangers continue to be ignored by governments and the press under a cloak of secrecy that is nearly absolute. The real dangers we face are swept under the rug. For those who would like some background on Tom Bearden's information about scalar electromagnetic weapons I suggest my article "Scalar Wars" and Bearden's own website Cheniere.org . In particular, read through Tom's book Fer de Lance which explains the weapons known as longitudinal wave interferometers. This weapon was announced by Nikita Krushchev in 1960 who said "It is a fantastic weapon." This new document released by Tom Bearden is called "Scalar Electromagnetic Weapons and their Terrorist Use: Immediate Strategic Aspects of the Asymmetric War on the U.S." I should probably give a warning here, the material covered in this document can be extremely frightening and scary. Bearden paints our beloved way of life as a very delicate house of cards where a tiny force applied to a particular card can bring the whole house tumbling down. The card which Bearden believes will be the one to cause the "house" of America to fall is our highly vulnerable centralized power grid. Taking down the power grid hubs with scalar interferometers is almost child's play. This is true assymetrical scalar terrorism, whereby a relatively small attack can have a huge disastrous effect. With no electrical power for even six months, something very doable, the entire economy of America would collapse. When I first read about these weapons a few years ago it seemed inevitable that these devices would eventually fall into the hands of terrorists and other rogue groups, because once you have the know-how, they are neither difficult nor expensive to build. Now the inevitable seems to be happening, rogue groups are acquiring these weapons, and the survival of the human race hangs in the balance. While the government and the media focus their attention on the dangerous possibilities that terrorists and rogue groups will get their hands on nuclear weapons, they completely ignore the fact that the most serious danger lies in the realm of scalar electromagnetic weapons which are already falling into the hands of rogue groups, namely the Yakuza, or "Japanese mafia," and the Aum Shinrikyo cult, now known as "Aleph," along with the Russian KGB, where they originated. Let us take a look at the information and warnings packed into Bearden's new article. Bearden is considered one of the world's foremost experts on scalar electromagnetism, scalar weapons, and energy from the vacuum. Here are some of the main points Bearden makes: 1. The greatest danger of future terrorism lies in the realm of the aquisition of scalar electromagnetic weapons by rogue groups and terrorists. Developed in Russia since the middle of the last century, these "Tesla" weapons have unprecedented and mind boggling powers and, as stated by Krushchev in 1960, "if used unrestainably could wipe out all life on earth." 2. Previous planned scalar electromagnetic attacks on the U.S. have already been just barely and narrowly avoided. A full attack, eventually, should be considered inevitable. 3. Such weapons have already fallen into the hands of rogue criminal groups, namely the Japanese mafia ("Yakuza") and the Aum Shinrikyo cult ("Aleph"). The Yakuza plans a full attack on the West within a three year (or less) time frame. The chief strategy will be to destroy the highly centralized and vulnerable electric power grid by scalar electromagnetic means, with the goal being the collapse of the American economy. This attack will turn off the power for many months, if not a year or more. 4. The Yakuza/Aum Shinrikyo consortium gained their knowledge of scalar weapons by leasing some of the Russian devices from the old KGB. The technology was stolen by them from the KGB and spirited back to Japan where the Japanese mafia is now building their own devices, including portable devices. Thus the most powerful weapons on earth are now being created and developed by an organized crime group. Important Note: this has nothing to do with the Japanese government! 5. These rogue groups also plan further chaos and destruction by using the weapons to trigger "natural" disasters. Hackworth Not too long ago in Iraq, a young American officer was warned by a Polish colonel: You can't go out there. People are getting killed. We must stay on our bases where we are safe. The American replied, I didnt come to Iraq to stay safe while American soldiers and Iraqi civilians are dying and you folks sit on your butts. What's your view on Polands (2,460 troops) and Italys (3,000) threat to follow Spains pullout from Iraq? I asked him. No big deal, he replied, because they dont bring much to the party. We had to take An Najaf two times, once from Saddam and once from Sadr. We ended up paying in blood twice for the same real estate while the Poles and Spanish (1,300) let one of the most peaceful areas in Iraq go to hell. The southern sectors of Iraq mostly Shia are under the command of Brits (9,000) and Poles. Except for the South Koreans (1,100) and Australians (800), most of our coalition partners in Iraq come under these two commands. I didnt see either the Poles or the Brits pushing subordinate units to clean up the insurgents who daily got stronger, adds a vet recently returned from Iraq. Many of our coalition partners have yet to learn you cant hunker down in mud forts and expect insurgents to kick back, says another good soldier, whos been working with coalition troops for almost a year. For example, a Bulgarian (480) leader, fed up with being mortared night after night, asked his Polish commander why his unit wasnt sending out patrols to kill the attackers. The Pole replied, Well ... its very dangerous out there. By giving up the initiative, the Poles have allowed the insurgents to determine where and when they will strike. According to this source, the problem isnt just with the Poles: When Spain bugged out, sadly the Hondurans (368) and Dominicans (302) followed. These guys were fierce fighters like the El Salvadorians (361), who fortunately stayed. As for the Spanish, they left with every bullet they brought. During the second battle for An Najaf, the coalition compound would have been overrun if not for U.S. and Salvadorian troops. During the retaking of Najaf, both the Polish and Spanish hid on their bases, even though the operation was in their sector. The southernmost provinces fall under the command of the Brits which also includes the reportedly worthless Italian brigade. The recently returned vet describes how a senior British officer explained his armys philosophy: We stay back until they become very bold and over-extend themselves. Then we jump out, counterattack and drive them back. Thats how the Brits lost the American Revolution, the vet observed. The Iraqi insurgents avoid direct contact until theyre ready to engage on their terms at their time. Just before he came home, one Brit battalion was moved to the mean killing field of Baghdad where he notes that they better seriously change their style of doing things if they want to stay alive. Right after the invasion, the Brits were able to go wherever they wished, he explained. But once they started vacating territory, it fell back into contention. Not all comments about coalition allies are negative. According to these stalwart, concerned American soldiers all of whom asked for anonymity to protect their careers the Japanese (240) are doing a great job. And anyone planning to shoot at a Bulgarian will find himself dead before he takes aim. Mongolians (160) have also proven their steel, and the Australians are superb, while the Ukrainians (1,600) performance is mixed. They all agree that the Shia areas can be saved but only if American senior leaders get coalition forces off their butts and out into the communities. And if the Brits, Poles and Italians would rather leave than take the initiative, the consensus is: let them pack their coolers, teapots and beach umbrellas and go home! Overall, the coalition appears to be a costly joke but American taxpayers, who are stuck with a big chunk of the tab, should be losing their sense of humor by now. A secret report suppressed for 4 months by US defense chiefs slips out and suddenly harsh abrupt climate change that will sink continents, throw the world into chaos anarchy with famine and widespread rioting, will erupt across the world. As early as next year widespread flooding by a rise in sea levels will create major upheaval for millions. This from the USA's Pentagon now in the mainstream news. The largely animated video , produced in association with Guerilla News Network, opens with Eminem reading to schoolchildren in the shadow of the World Trade Center on 9/11, not unlike Bush did in Florida. It then cuts to Eminem standing before a wall collaged with newspaper clippings and photos featuring headlines abut Bush's foreknowledge of 9/11 (including the famous BUSH KNEW New York Post headline); the civil rights abuses of the PATRIOT Act; maltreatment of soldiers; war profiteering and even the Illuminati's all-seeing eye. Eminem then rallies a crowd of youngsters to action, crying Fuck Bush! as black helicopters buzz over. This is intercut with a scene of a soldier coming home only to immediately receive an order sending him back to Iraq. As Eminem calls Bush this monster, this coward we empowered, one of the infamous bin Laden videos plays on a television -- only to have OBL's backdrop collapse to reveal a giggling Dick Cheney and Don Rumsfeld on a Hollywood studio. The lyrics slam the government's psychological warfare as the animated Eminem leads a crowd of youth to a voting booth. But perhaps Eminem isn't cyncial enough here, as a word about the electronic voting scam machines would be worthwhile as well.
