MEMRI's disgusting partisanship
Rodger Payne has asked me to respond to a remarkable distortion which MEMRI is trying to peddle to credulous non-Arabic speakers in order to influence the American elections. Apparently it's making the rounds on pro-Bush blogs - I'll have to take Rodger's word for it. Here's a Volokh post on it, here's the NY Post, here's Yigal Carmon in the National Review.Don't fall for it.
To put it as bluntly as possible, MEMRI is being highly disingenuous to claim that Osama bin Laden supposedly was saying that he would attack American states which voted for Bush but not those which voted for Kerry. Aside from the fact that this contradicts the entire thrust of his message, it rests on a remarkably (even for MEMRI) thin foundation.. in other words, not only isn't it the sort of thing you'd expect bin Laden (who sees little principled difference between the candidates) to say, it also isn't what he said. Nor is it how Arabs and Muslims - who presumably don't have the same translation problems as most Americans - understood him.
First, it is worth pointing out that no Arab commentators or newspapers seem to have drawn the same conclusions as MEMRI's linguistic geniuses. In an al Jazeera roundup of 'different interpretations of the bin Laden message' this morning, for example, nobody raises this interpretation. MEMRI refers to a number of radical chatroom discussions, but in the mainstream public discourse - including interviews with leading Islamists such as Montasir al Zayat - everybody makes the same 'mistake' which MEMRI thinks Americans are making. Which suggests that it is not a mistake at all: Americans, just like almost all Arabs and Muslims, understood bin Laden correctly.
What is happening is that MEMRI is cherry-picking a couple of statements on fringe websites to support its own, highly partisan, interpretation. Actually, to be totally clear, they are relying on ONE statement on ONE radical website, which could have been posted by ANYBODY. This is not an authoritative interpretation, nor one which has been accepted anywhere in mainstream Arab or Islamist debates which I have yet seen.
This is what MEMRI always does: not mis-translate, but choose selectively among a wide range of sources to find those which support their agenda - and leave non-Arabic speakers with a highly distorted picture of reality. This is a classic case. Don't be fooled.
MEMRI's argument entirely on bin Laden's use of the word 'wilayet' instead of 'dawla' to refer to 'state.' While MEMRI is correct that in normal usage, wilayet would refer to a sub-unit (such as an American state), its dictionary definition is, in fact, 'sovereign power, sovereign, sovereignty, rule, government' (Hans Wehr dictionary). You decide. And Bin Laden's reference to not attacking Sweden suggests that sovereign states are his reference point, not American states.
MEMRI's claim that bin Laden offered an 'election deal' to Americans is blatantly false. Bin Laden clearly stated that America's security was not in the hands of Bush or Kerry, and that only American policies would make a difference.
In short, MEMRI is, as always, lying for partisan reasons. Truly, they have no shame. Hopefully no reputable outlets will fall for this disgraceful stunt.

The Truth Hurts Osama speaks, but are we listening?

The re-emergence of Osama bin Laden in the final days of the presidential campaign was occasioned by a flurry of speculation: was OBL rooting for Bush? Or for Kerry? Good old American narcissism: it always comes to the fore. It's always about us, now isn't it?
The Democrats lamented that this was the dreaded "October surprise," while Walter Cronkite half-jokingly averred that Karl Rove must have put bin Laden up to it; Republicans were visibly nervous that the taunting jack-in-the-box had popped up yet again, reminding voters that the man George W. Bush vowed to get "dead or alive" still mocked us with impunity. Some mutually self-protective instinct briefly brought both candidates together with messages of "unity," urging Americans to close their ears, close their minds, and close ranks in a united front of impregnable ignorance. They soon fell to using bin Laden's reappearance against each other, but, as OBL made perfectly clear in his speech, it wasn't about the election: it was about grabbing the attention of the American people.
Like any and all ideologues everywhere, bin Laden wants to get his message out, in the somewhat naïve belief that the power of mere words will have an impact. Clothed in golden robes, speaking softly and calmly, and with nary a weapon in sight a first the man they liken to the legendary Vanishing Imam looked directly into the camera:
"You, the American people, I talk to you today about the best way to avoid another catastrophe and about war, its reasons and its consequences. And in that regard, I say to you that security is an important pillar of human life, and that free people do not compromise their security. Contrary to what [President George W.] Bush says and claims that we hate freedom let him tell us then, 'Why did we not attack Sweden?'"
For a man supposedly hiding in a hole somewhere, constantly on the run, he sure did look remarkably serene. Standing behind a desk, without any of the emphatic hand gestures that have characterized past perorations, he taunted his enemies with sarcasm and exhibited a quality rare in mass murderers: a sense of humor. Why not Sweden, indeed.
It was a kinder, gentler Osama: although his very presence is enough to cast a pall of menace over any words he might utter, there were no explicit threats. Instead, there was the offer of a conditional truce:
"We fought with you because we are free, and we don't put up with transgressions. We want to reclaim our nation. As you spoil our security, we will do so to you.
"I wonder about you. Although we are ushering the fourth year after 9/11, Bush is still exercising confusion and misleading you and not telling you the true reason. Therefore, the motivations are still there for what happened to be repeated."
I wonder about us, too. Are we so narcissistic that we are deaf to all voices other than our own? Are we a nation condemned to talk endlessly to itself, like some madman one might encounter wandering the streets in a daze, a danger to himself and others? In this speech, bin Laden tries to reason with his enemies, and this, I submit, is far more dangerous than all his threats combined.
An attempt at conciliation often precedes an unprecedented assault, and there is no doubt that, for all this administration's boasting that they have "taken out" three-quarters of the al-Qaeda leadership, the wily mastermind of 9/11 has the power to strike us in places and ways yet to be imagined.
So let us examine what he had to say, objectively and dispassionately, with the understanding that the first rule of warfare is to know your enemy.
The first observation to be made is that bin Laden has here refuted the canard that he is in any way akin to a Western-style nihilist, along the lines of Nechaev or some punk rocker with a ring through his nose and a swastika carved into his forehead. The analysis proffered by CIA analyst Michael Scheuer in his most recent book, Imperial Hubris, is confirmed: they are over here because we are over there. Context the context of American foreign policy is key to understanding the genesis and rise of al-Qaeda. Bin Laden puts it like this:
"And I will talk to you about the reason for those events, and I will be honest with you about the moments the decision was made so that you can ponder. And I tell you, God only knows, that we never had the intentions to destroy the towers.
"But after the injustice was so much and we saw transgressions and the coalition between Americans and the Israelis against our people in Palestine and Lebanon, it occurred to my mind that we deal with the towers. And these special events that directly and personally affected me go back to 1982 and what happened when America gave permission for Israel to invade Lebanon. And assistance was given by the American sixth fleet.

Day of the Dead: The Haunting of the White House

Something is rising from the ashes of September 11: the spectre of
questions that will haunt our country until answered.

Months after the release of the official 9/11 Commission Report - even
as Congress moves to implement its proposals for a radical
centralization of security forces - growing numbers of Americans are
doubting their own government's account of what really happened on
September 11, and how.

>From the first, the Bush Administration resisted investigation and
disclosure. Families of September 11 victims were forced to lobby the
administration and Congress for a full and independent inquiry. They
fought for 14 months, blocked every step of the way by the White House.

The political games reached such a point that the survivors of the
worst attack ever on American soil were forced to hold a candlelight
vigil in front of the White House. A vigil for the truth.

The White House finally assented in December 2002 to the establishment
of an independent commission, under former New Jersey Governor Thomas
Kean. Still, the administration pushed for a hand-picked panel, with a
narrow focus on intelligence failures and recommendations.

The families demanded a full investigation, posing nearly 400 questions
to the Kean Commission. The commissioners said they welcomed these
queries. But their final report ignored most of the unanswered
questions. Still posted on the website of the September 11 Family
Steering Committee, these questions are a stark reminder of the Kean
Commission's failures.

Now these same questions have been submitted to the New York Attorney
General. Last week, the New York City office of Eliot Spitzer received
a citizens' complaint to open a legal inquiry into crimes still
unsolved, more than three years later.

So begins the haunting of the White House.

Driven by survivor families, independent researchers, journalists, and
a growing number of ordinary citizens, an emergent "9/11 truth
movement" has organized several public inquiries into the events of
September 11 during the past year. As co-chairs of the first 9/11
Citizens' Commission, held in New York City in September, we were
entrusted with answering questions the Kean Commission ignored.

What did we hear? We heard evidence of specific advance warnings about
the 9/11 attacks from overseas. We heard about the spiking of FBI
terrorism investigations and the lack of response during the attacks by
high officials, including George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld and the
acting Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Richard Myers.

We heard about air toxicity at Ground Zero still afflicting
firefighters, first responders, and New York residents - and how, in
the days after September 11, the White House intervened to prevent the
Environmental Protection Agency from issuing a strong warning that the
air in Lower Manhattan was unsafe to breathe.

We also learned that, although there was a stunning abandonment of
standard procedure for hijackings and air defense on September 11, the
9/11 Commission Report fails to issue a call for offici

Selective Memri Brian Whitaker investigates whether the 'independent' media institute that translates the Arabic newspapers is quite what it seems Monday August 12, 2002 For some time now, I have been receiving small gifts from a generous institute in the United States. The gifts are high-quality translations of articles from Arabic newspapers which the institute sends to me by email every few days, entirely free-of-charge.
The emails also go to politicians and academics, as well as to lots of other journalists. The stories they contain are usually interesting.
Whenever I get an email from the institute, several of my Guardian colleagues receive one too and regularly forward their copies to me - sometimes with a note suggesting that I might like to check out the story and write about it.
If the note happens to come from a more senior colleague, I'm left feeling that I really ought to write about it. One example last week was a couple of paragraphs translated by the institute, in which a former doctor in the Iraqi army claimed that Saddam Hussein had personally given orders to amputate the ears of military deserters.
The organisation that makes these translations and sends them out is the Middle East Media Research Institute (Memri), based in Washington but with recently-opened offices in London, Berlin and Jerusalem.
Its work is subsidised by US taxpayers because as an "independent, non-partisan, non-profit" organisation, it has tax-deductible status under American law.
Memri's purpose, according to its website, is to bridge the language gap between the west - where few speak Arabic - and the Middle East, by "providing timely translations of Arabic, Farsi, and Hebrew media".
Despite these high-minded statements, several things make me uneasy whenever I'm asked to look at a story circulated by Memri. First of all, it's a rather mysterious organisation. Its website does not give the names of any people to contact, not even an office address.
The reason for this secrecy, according to a former employee, is that "they don't want suicide bombers walking through the door on Monday morning" (Washington Times, June 20).
This strikes me as a somewhat over-the-top precaution for an institute that simply wants to break down east-west language barriers.
The second thing that makes me uneasy is that the stories selected by Memri for translation follow a familiar pattern: either they reflect badly on the character of Arabs or they in some way further the political agenda of Israel. I am not alone in this unease.
Ibrahim Hooper of the Council on American-Islamic Relations told the Washington Times: "Memri's intent is to find the worst possible quotes from the Muslim world and disseminate them as widely as possible."
Memri might, of course, argue that it is seeking to encourage moderation by highlighting the blatant examples of intolerance and extremism. But if so, one would expect it - for the sake of non-partisanship - t o publicise extremist articles in the Hebrew media too.
Although Memri claims that it does provide translations from Hebrew media, I can't recall receiving any.

Evidence from Memri's website also casts doubt on its non-partisan status. Besides supporting liberal democracy, civil society, and the free market, the institute also emphasises "the continuing relevance of Zionism to the Jewish people and to the state of Israel".
That is what its website used to say, but the words about Zionism have now been deleted. The original page, however, can still be found in internet archives.
The reason for Memri's air of secrecy becomes clearer when we look at the people behind it. The co-founder and president of Memri, and the registered owner of its website, is an Israeli called Yigal Carmon.
Mr - or rather, Colonel - Carmon spent 22 years in Israeli military intelligence and later served as counter-terrorism adviser to two Israeli prime ministers, Yitzhak Shamir and Yitzhak Rabin.
Retrieving another now-deleted page from the archives of Memri's website also throws up a list of its staff. Of the six people named, three - including Col Carmon - are described as having worked for Israeli intelligence.
Among the other three, one served in the Israeli army's Northern Command Ordnance Corps, one has an academic background, and the sixth is a former stand-up comedian.
Col Carmon's co-founder at Memri is Meyrav Wurmser, who is also director of the centre for Middle East policy at the Indianapolis-based Hudson Institute, which bills itself as "America's premier source of applied research on enduring policy challenges".
The ubiquitous Richard Perle, chairman of the Pentagon's defence policy board, recently joined Hudson's board of trustees.
Ms Wurmser is the author of an academic paper entitled Can Israel Survive Post-Zionism? in which she argues that leftwing Israeli intellectuals pose "more than a

Yesterday a friend voted early at a polling location in Austin. She voted straight Democratic. When she did the final check, lo and behold every vote was for the Democratic candidates except that it showed she had voted for Bush/Cheney for president/vice pres. She immediately got a poll official. On her vote, it was corrected. She called the Travis County Democratic headquarters. They took all her information, and told her that she wasn't the first to report a similar incident and that they are looking into it. So check before you leave the polling booth, and if anything is wrong, get it corrected immediately. Report any irregularities to your local Democratic headquarters. Make sure you pass this along to your friends ... hopefully this is all over the airwaves by tomorrow ... Origins: As political rumors and tales of wrongdoing go, this one is a bit of an odd duck in that while everything reported in the widely circulated alert is true, the underlying message of the piece that someone or something has been deliberately tampering with the election process for the nefarious purpose of guaranteeing a win for a particular political party isn't. In 2004, some of those voting in the advance polls held in Travis County, Texas, experienced an unusual result: after selecting the straight Democratic ticket, the ballot summaries subsequently displayed on their screens indicated they were about to vote for George W. Bush. This perplexing turn of events was the result of poorly designed balloting software colliding with voter error. As well as the candidates' names, a referendum item for a $60 million commuter line was also on the ballot, displayed at the end. Those who chose to vote for a single party by way of selecting the 'straight ticket' option on the eSlate voting machines then in use in that district (they've since been removed) still had to scroll down to the end of the ballot to find the referendum. However, because that measure was off-screen, some voters failed to realize it was there, prompting some who opted for the straight ticket to prematurely attempt to complete the process by hitting the enter button rather than the next page button. According to elections division manager Gail Fisher, hitting 'enter' rather than 'next page' caused selections to redistribute in the following manner: "If someone casts a Democratic ticket, they're seeing that the change switches from the first position on the ballot, which is a Bush/Cheney ticket. If they cast a Republican straight party ticket, what they see is that first position in the presidential contest switches back to a 'No' selection." Thankfully, a ballot summary page appeared on the screen before the ballot was cast, which gave those using the eSlate machines a chance to review their selections before making them final. Those who had experienced such a shift by inadvertently skipping the Capital Metro commuter rail referendum were able to get the matter straightened out and so cast their votes for their candidates of choice. The machines that produced this anomaly have since been taken out of service, so they will not contribute to further polling confusion on election day. Even while the problem existed, it wasn't the widespread scourge one might have thought it would have been: out of the approximately 70,000 who cast their ballots by 23 October 2004 in that district, election officials received only about 12 calls reporting the problem. Remember, to trigger that startling effect, voters both had to be attempting to mark a straight ticket and unthinkingly skipping past the referendum item, a double prerequisite that served to severely limit the number of people affected. In a civil lawsuit filed late Monday in federal court in Harrisburg, and in interviews with the Daily News, John and Joanne Knowles of Mechanicsburg and Scott and Lisa Stanko of Carlisle said the ex-trooper, a janitor at the school, and 10 other people identified in the lawsuit as John Does sexually assaulted their daughters. They also allege that the girls were photographed in sexual acts by the janitor and others. The lawsuit claims the trooper wore his state police uniform while abusing the girls. Both girls have sexually transmitted diseases because of the abuse and have permanent mental and emotional damage, the lawsuit says."

It allows the hacker to "snatch" the victims cookie file (a file planted in the victim's computer used to identify him) using a seemingly innocent link (which directs to Gmail's site itself). Once stolen, this cookie file allows the hacker to identify himself as the victim, without the need of a password. Even if the victim does change his password afterwards, it will be to no avail. "The system authenticates the hacker as the victim, using the stolen cookie file. Thus no password is involved in the authentication process. The victim can change his password as many times as he pleases, and it still won't stop the hacker from using his box", explains Goldshlagger.Whether hackers have already used this method to compromise users' accounts is unclear at the moment.Matters are several times worse when it comes to a service such as Gmail. Besides the obvious blow to Google's seemingly spotless image, we're looking here at a major threat to anyone who has turned to Gmail as his major email box. "Because Gmail offers a gigabyte of storage, several times bigger than most other web based mail services, users hardly delete any old correspondence", says Goldshlagger. "The result is a huge amount of mail accumulating in the users' boxes, which frequently include bank notices, passwords, private documents and other files the user wanted to backup. A vote for John Kerry is a vote AGAINST the U.S. military personnel
who liberated Iraq -- those Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines --
who are now on the frontline defending our critical national interests
in the region against Jihadi terrorists. It is also a vote against
those who have already provided the last measure on that front in
service to our great nation.

Indeed, there is a direct correlation between Kerry's efforts to
politicize dissent against U.S. resolve in the war against terrorism
-- specifically on the Iraqi warfront -- and American and Allied
causalities on that front. Those forces, including countless Iraqis,
are being injured and killed in ever-increasing numbers because of the
political discord Kerry and his ilk are fomenting.

If you think there is not a connection between Kerry's campaign
rhetoric and U.S. casualties, read on

Kerry has reduced the war to liberate Iraq to nothing more than
political fodder, which has emboldened our Jihadi enemies. As noted
recently by Professor Mohammad Amin Bashar at Baghdad's Islamic
University, "If the U.S.  Army suffered numerous humiliating losses,
Kerry would emerge as the superman of the American people." To that
end, Abu Jalal, an influential Iraqi resistance leader, said last
month, "American elections and Iraq are linked tightly together. We've
got to work to change the election, and we've done so.  With our
strikes, we've dragged Bush into the mud."

The net effect of Kerry's dissention can certainly be felt in terms of
increased numbers of American and Allied casualties. A few weeks ago,
John Edwards unwittingly provided the evidence for this very
correlation: "We lost more troops in September than we lost in August;
lost more in August than we lost in July; lost more in July than we
lost in June."

This was, and remains, the unavoidable consequence of Kerry's reckless
campaign rhetoric. The blood of those American Patriots (like the
blood of his "brothers" in Vietnam, after he used that war as fodder
for his 1972 congressional campaign), is on John Kerry's hands.

To be sure, this is the harshest of all condemnations. But it is also
the truth.

Now, Osama bin Laden, who planned the 9/11 attack killing 3,000 of our
countrymen -- men, women and children -- has emerged from his rat
hole, and issued a statement which is, unquestionably, timed to
support John Kerry.

In that light, the most challenging question that can be asked on
this, the eve of the 2004 Presidential Election, is not so much, "For
whom will you vote?" but "With whom will you vote?"

Will you vote with Osama bin Laden, Abu Jalal, Saddam Hussein and Abu
Musab Al-Zarqawi? How about Kim Jong-Il, Mohammad Khatami, Moammar
al-Ghadafi and Hu Jingtao. All of these tyrants support John Kerry.

Will you vote with America's fighting forces, who, according to a
just- published Army Times poll, overwhelmingly support President
George W. Bush. In fact, 82 percent of our Armed Forces said they do
not want John Kerry as their Commander in Chief.

  Merck Falls as E-Mails Suggest Vioxx Smoking

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Merck & Co. Inc.'s Vioxx recall is 
mushrooming into a product-liability nightmare that erased another 
$23 billion of 
the company's valuation on Monday, but analysts said it will likely 
withstand the crisis. 
Merck shares fell as much as 10.5 percent after the Wall Street 
Journal published e-mails from company officials that suggested 
Merck knew about the heart-attack risks of the arthritis drug years 
before the recall. 
The stock has fallen almost 38 percent since Vioxx was recalled 
on Sept. 30, its lowest since November 1995. The shares closed down 
$3.03, or 9.7 percent, at $28.28 on Monday. 
"If the e-mails actually exist and say what they are purported to 
say, they appear at least superficially to be a smoking gun that 
lawyers could pull up as evidence against Merck," said Trevor 
Polischuk, a drug analyst for Orbimed Advisors. 
Polischuk said the e-mails will encourage more patients to sue 
Merck, claiming the $2.5 billion-a-year drug harmed them. 
"But it will probably be very difficult for plaintiffs to prove 
Vioxx hurt them because many patients probably had pre-existing 
heart problems," said Polischuk. 
He said Merck shares have been "oversold," and are now 
an opportunity at a price that represents a 30 percent discount to 
stocks of rivals -- based on projected company 
earnings. 
An estimated 20 million Americans have taken Vioxx since it was 
launched in 1999 because it caused fewer ulcers and gastrointestinal 
problems than standard arthritis treatments. 
The Journal said an e-mail dated March 9, 2000 suggested Merck 
recognized Vioxx increased heart risk. The e-mail -- written by 
research chief Edward Scolnick -- said cardiovascular events "are 
clearly there." 
The article said another e-mail, written years ago by Merck 
research executive Alise Reicin, suggested people at high risk be 
excluded from a trial so the rate of cardiovascular problems of 
Vioxx patients and others "would not be evident." 
Merck recalled Vioxx after it was shown to double the risk of

On Friday, Merck -- citing documents that had been made public -- 
issued a statement saying it acted "responsibly and appropriately"

Mehta Partners analyst Shaojing Tong said the e-mails suggest 
Merck withheld information. He said the company's financial

maker Wyeth following its 1997 recall of two diet drugs used in the 
"fen-phen" diet cocktail. 
"I previously had no reason to suspect misconduct by Merck. But 
the e-mails move things one step closer to fen-phen in terms of 
misconduct and hiding facts," Tong said. 
Tong said the company's now-decimated share price probably 
assumes the company will eventually pay out $5 billion in Vioxx 
liabilities. 
"If it becomes clear that the payout will grow to $15 billion or 
so, the share price could fall another 5 or 10 percent," Tong added. 

Jon Fisher, fund manager at Fifth Third Bank, said there is no 
reliable way to predict future product-liability costs. 
"If it rises to $50 billion, Merck's stock could go a lot lower," 
said Fisher, who added it might wind up being only a fraction that

Right you are. This is more than prosecution of the innocent if the story
is as told below. It is PUNISHMENT of the innocent, knowing that they are
innocent, and without even a pretense of "due process of law". Well and
truly "Bush Whacked" I would say.

Now where do you think good ol' U-S-A got the precedent for that? From the
use of torturous and murderous punishment against the poor (eg rendering
them homeless) for no crime, no misdemeanour ... not so much as a
jay-walking violation.

That is why I keep telling those on Ingram-L that people like Fred Hutter
who buy into this kind of "justice" are FASCISTS. It is only by pleasing
Fred and Cabal that you are exempt from punishment.

That is what the Arenas of Rome were all about under the First Reich. What
pleases the Freddy Fascists today may not please them tomorrow. THEY
define the bread and circuses. They call it "THE economy" to deceive you.
It is not THE economy. It is THEIR economy, arbitrarily defined.

But one thing remains constant in THEIR economy. The poor must please and
pleasure the rich or they will be punished severely and possibly even
executed by various cruel and unusual methods. The Bush-Whacking Florida
favourite I hear is death-by-hurricane-and-car for the homeless poor.

It gets even worse. This year, the outright FRAUD being perpetrated by the Democrats 
and their cronies in groups like ACT and MoveOn.org is OFF THE SCALE. You've probably 
already seen the reports from "battleground" and other states:

  * In Ohio, they've got four counties where there are now more voters registered than 
they have 18 and over population. A lot of these newly-registered "voters" don't even 
have addresses. When the elections departments send the registration postcards out to 
them after they register, thousands of them are coming back undeliverable, all across 
the state.

  * Ohio's voter-registration rolls contain more than 120,000 duplicate names, and an 
untold number of ineligible voters, such as people who have moved out of the state. A 
review of the rolls by the Columbus Dispatch even found a murder victim and two 
suspected terrorists among the "eligible voters"!

  * In Michigan, Democrats have sued to force "provisional" ballots that are cast in 
the wrong precinct to be counted, anticipating that their supporters are the ones most 
likely to head to the wrong place to vote. Michigan Democrats delayed the suit for 
months and attempted to "railroad" it through the courts at the last minute. Imagine! 
People could vote as far away from their residence as they chose, utterly unknown to 
personnel at the polling place or to their non-neighbors. Other than fraud or double 
voting, what could be the purpose?

  * In Florida, election officials found 46,000 state residents also registered to 
vote in New York. The overwhelming number of double registrations were Democratic. The 
Orlando Sentinel also examined voting records from Florida, Georgia and North 
Carolina, and found that in more than 68,000 cases voters with the same names and 
dates of birth were registered in two states.

  * In Pennsylvania, reports indicate that the hyper-partisan Democrat Gov. Ed Rendell 
and the former Kerry campaign official he just put in charge of monitoring the state's 
election for problems such as fraud are working overtime to make sure that the votes 
of some 16,000 military voters aren't counted. As polls show roughly 75 percent of the 
military vote is likely to go to Pres. Bush, this represents a clear attempt to deny 
Bush as many as 12,000 votes in that state.

  * In Alabama, counties have a big backlog of last-minute registrations that were 
brought in by "outside" organizations, and discrepancies in the records have left 
officials unsure how many voters are actually on the rolls. Last week, the director of 
the office of voter registration resigned after she couldn't explain the discrepancies.

MOSCOW - Russian Communist Party leader Gennady
Zyuganov believes that Western intelligence services
have crudely interfered in the situation in Ukraine in
the run-up to the October 31 presidential election.

"I have been in Kyiv for a third day and I see for
myself that the numerous actions of local opposition
bear the earmarks of those groups that at different
times tried to destabilize Prague, Budapest and
Bucharest - the earmarks of U.S. special services," he
told Interfax on Thursday.

Zyuganov said he would not forecast the election

Russian communists support Petro Symonenko, the leader

NATO chief says it hopes to train 1,000 senior Iraqi
officers a year

MONS, Belgium - NATO aims to train around 1,000 senior
Iraqi military officers a year as part of its military
aid programme, the organisation's supreme commander,
US General James Jones, said Thursday.

"About a thousand a year - that is pretty
significant," he told reporters at NATO headquarters
in Mons in southern Belgium.

Jones declined to say how many NATO instructors would
be sent to Iraq or what kind of force would be
deployed to protect them, saying it "depended on the
willingness of member states".

Senior officers suggested the number could be between
350 and 3,000, though the higher figure was judged
very unlikely.

"I think it would need not exceed 3,000,"Jones said.
"I'm confident it will be less than that."

The NATO contingent will work on three fronts -
developing a military academy on the outskirts of
Baghdad, channelling supplies of military equipment
donated by alliance members and advising officers in
the new Iraqi army.

Jones submitted earlier this week an "operation plan"
to put into effect the training mission. This is being
considered by NATO's military committee before being
passed to ambassadors from the 26 NATO member states
for approval later this year.

At present fewer than 70 NATO personnel are in Baghdad
where they have already begun training military
headquarters staff.

"Now we are working out of the Green Zone (a
fortress-like compound in the centre of Baghad that
also houses the US and British embassies among other
official buildings) but we are looking at alternatives
to base trainers outside," a senior NATO spokesman in
Baghdad told AFP Wednesday.

Jones said he could not say whether the military
academy would be functioning by January, the date set
for general elections in Iraq.

I am writing this before the election, so I 
cannot know whether George W. Bush or John F. 
Kerry will be our President, God willing, for the 
next four years. These two Nordic, aristocratic 
multi-millionaires are virtually twins, and as 
unlike most of the rest of us as a couple of 
cross-eyed albinos. But this much I find timely: 

 Both candidates were and still are members of 
the exclusive secret society at Yale, called 
"Skull and Bones."

 That means that, no matter which one wins, we 
will have a Skull and Bones President at a time 
when entire vertebrate species, because of how we 
have poisoned the topsoil, the waters and the 
atmosphere, are becoming, hey presto, nothing but 
skulls and bones. 

 Poetry!
 What was the beginning of this end? Some might 
say Adam and Eve and the apple of knowledge. I 
say it was Prometheus, a Titan, a son of gods, 
who in Greek myth stole fire from his parents and 
gave it to human beings. The gods were so mad 
they chained him naked to a rock with his back 
exposed, and had eagles eat his liver.

 And it is now plain that the gods were right to 
do that. Our close cousins the gorillas and 
orangutans and chimps and gibbons have gotten 
along just fine all this time while eating raw 
vegetable matter, whereas we not only prepare hot 
meals, but have now all but destroyed this once 
salubrious planet as a life-support system in 
fewer than 200 years, mainly by making 
thermodynamic whoopee with fossil fuels.

 The Englishman Michael Faraday built the first 
dynamo, capable of turning mechanical energy into 
electricity, only 173 years ago. The first oil 
well in the United States, now a dry hole, was 
drilled in Titusville, Pennsylvania, by Edwin L. 
Drake only 145 years ago. The German Karl Benz 
built the first automobile powered by an internal 
combustion engine only 119 years ago.

 The American Wright brothers, of course, built 
and flew the first airplane only 101 years ago. 
It was powered by gasoline. You want to talk 
about irresistible whoopee?

 A booby trap.
 Fossil fuels, so easily set alight! Yes, and as 
Bush and Kerry are out campaigning, we are 
presently touching off nearly the very last 
whiffs and drops and chunks of them. All lights 
are about to go out. No more electricity. All 
forms of transportation are about to stop, and 
the planet Earth will soon have a crust of skulls 
and bones and dead machinery.

 And nobody can do a thing about it. It's too 
late in the game. Don't spoil the party, but 
here's the truth: We have squandered our planet's 
resources, including air and water, as though 
there were no tomorrow, so now there isn't going 
to be one.

 So there goes the Junior Prom, but that's not the half of it.

Saudi Entrepreneur Adnan Khashoggi Linked to 911 Terrorists

& A 9/11 TRIAL RUN IN MOSCOW

Two years before the towers in Manhattan crumbled under the weight of global
political corruption, a spate of bombings in Russia left relatives and
victims, CNN reported on September 10, 1999, "searching for answers."

At least 90 bodies, including seven children, were dragged from the wreckage
of a bombed-out apartment building in Moscow in early September 1999.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, in a televised speech, suspected
terrorism; if so, he said, "we are facing a cunning, impudent, insidious and
bloodthirsty opponent."1

CNN reported: "Russian President Boris Yeltsin declared a day of mourning on
Monday for the victims of Russia's last three explosions and bombings - the
Moscow blast, the bombing of a shopping center near the Kremlin and the
September fourth car bomb that demolished another apartment building in
Buinaksk, in the southern Russian region of Dagestan"

By the third week of September, the death toll rose to over 200. Chechen
forces were behind the bombings, proclaimed Yeltsin, a belief shared by Yuri
Luzkhov, the mayor of Moscow. Interior Minister Vladimir Rushailo oversaw
the investigation and announced that the Russian government "will consider
itself within its rights to use all resources at its disposal to rebuff the
aggression."2

And none of this added up. The harried Russian proles were quick to accept
the governemnt's explanation that Chechens were responsible for the blasts
in Moscow and the Caucasus. But the Asia Times editorialized, "it is highly
unlikely." And no one stood to benefit by the ourbreak of bombing but  but,
well, Yeltsin 

In a statement of denial, Chechen leader Shamil Basayev stated, "We had
nothing to do with the explosion in Moscow. We never kill civilians. This is
not our style."

Provisions anticipating the Patriot Act were proposed. The Duma considered
declaring a state of emergency. Until the bombings, the public had
steadfastly opposed such measures, but even Yegor Stroyev, speaker of the
Federation Council, the upper hall of parliament, had to admit that he'd
firmly opposed emergency measures in the past but after the second Moscow
explosion, well, there was an obvious "need to consolidate the legal base
for combating the rampage of terrorism and crime."3

Still, there were the usual skeptics. Viktor Ilyukhin, a Communist leader,
dismissed the bombings as provocateur actions: "Political hysteria is being
fanned artificially, including by way of explosions to cancel parliamentary
and presidential elections through a state of emergency."4

Day by day, the true, sordid details emerged in Versiya, Novaya Gazeta and
UK's Independent to erode Yeltsin's credibility. It developed that there was
more to the bomb plot than the government had revealed  that its true
origins lay not in the Russian satellites but in a meeting of conspirators
held at the flat of Saudi entrepreneur Adnan Khashoggi 

"It is clear that apartment explosions in Moscow would not have happened if
somebody in the Russian political elite did not want them," Novaya Gazeta
opined on January 24, 2000. "One by one, pieces of puzzle were put together.
But there were a few details that were lacking. They began to clear in
January, when Zhirinovsky and Chubais finally broke up. And at the same
time, some of the participants started to tell their version of events. In
the Versiya newspaper, there was an article about the meeting of [Alexander]
Voloshin with [Shamil] Basayev in France." Basayev was the radical Muslim
leader who planned the violence on Dagestan. "This did not happen in Paris,
as some of the newspapers reported later, but on the villa of Adnan
Khashoggi, Arabic milliona

This raises an interesting question. Was the misinterpretation deliberate 
to mask a direct threat against the individual states bin Laden was making 
in the U.S. fearing a reaction favorable to Bush. Whatever else they are, those 
who wrote bin Laden's speech  are not stupid. This has all the earmarks of 
a psyop operation intended to provoke a predictable reaction favorable to Bush. 
Bin Laden was created by the CIA. Is he still under its control?
 
If clearly understood as a threat to the states, most Americans would react 
with anger at a foreign attempt to influence our election and do the opposite of 
what bin Laden seems to be demanding. 
 
But why would bin Laden want Bush returned to office? Here it gets a little 
complicated. It has been suggested Bush and his policies against Islamic 
terrorists have been a valuable recruiting tool for bin Laden which he 
wants to continue. On the other hand perhaps bin Laden and Al qaeda really are 
tools of the CIA. His lauding of Mohamad Atta as the mastrmind of 9/11 is 
contrary to mountains of evidence compiled by independent researchers but is 
intended to ratify the work of fiction known as the report of the 9/11 
Commission absolving elements of the U.S. government of complicity in the 9/11 
attacks.
 
There is a lot in the bin Laden speech. It remains to be seen what impact, 
if any, it has on the election.

  The tape 
  of Osama bin Laden that was aired Friday on Al-Jazeera included a 
  specific threat to "each U.S. state," designed to influence the outcome of 
  Tuesday's election, according to the Arabic translators at the prestigious 
  Middle East Media Research Center. 
  The U.S. media have mistranslated the words "ay wilaya" (which means 
  "each U.S. state") to mean a "country" or "nation" other than the U.S., 
  says MEMRI, while in reality bin Laden's threat was directed specifically 
  at each individual U.S. state. MEMRI specializes in translating Middle 
  Eastern documents, speeches and the like for Western consumption. 
  
  Translated correctly, bin Laden's speech suggests some knowledge of the 
  U.S. electoral college system. In fact, notes MEMRI, in one section of his 
  speech where he harshly criticizes President Bush, bin Laden states: "Any 
  U.S. state that does not toy with our security automatically guarantees 
  its own security." 
  The Islamist website Al-Qal'a explained what this sentence meant: "This 
  message was a warning to every U.S. state separately. When he [bin Laden] 
  said, 'Every state will be determining its own security, and will be 
  responsible for its choice,' it means that any U.S. state that will choose 
  to vote for the white thug Bush as president has chosen to fight us, and 
  we will consider it our enemy, and any state that will vote against Bush 
  has chosen to make peace with us, and we will not characterize it as an 
  enemy. By this characterization, Sheikh Osama wants to drive a wedge in 
  the American body, to weaken it, and he wants to divide the American 
  people itself between enemies of Islam and the Muslims, and those who 
  fight for us, so that he doesn't treat all American people as if they're 
  the same. This letter will have great implications inside the American 
  society, part of which are connected to the American elections, and part 
  of which are connected to what will come after the elections." 
  While bin Laden threatened each U.S. state, he also offered an election 
  deal to the American voters  a sort of amnesty for states that don't vote 
  for Bush, similar to the ultimatum he directed toward Europe in April, in 
  which he offered a truce. 
  The Islamist website Al-Islah explains: "Some people ask 'what's new in 
  this tape?' [The answer is that] this tape is the second of its kind, 
  after the previous tape of the Sheikh [Osama bin Laden], in which he 
  offered a truce to the Europeans a few months ago, and it is a completion 
  of this move, and it brings together the complementary elements of 
  politics and religion, political savvy and force, the sword and justice. 
  The Sheikh reminds the West in this tape of the great Islamic civilization 
  and pure Islamic religion, and of Islamic justice ..."
