-Caveat Lector- One can twist and spin words in any direction one wants. It's over, and good has prevailed-a rarity in this country these days. After the pure slop we had in so many high offices over the last 8 years this is VERY refreshing. Perjury? Where have I heard that before? - - On Thu, 1 Feb 2001 13:27:48 EST "Samantha L." Bill, Actually, I got it from watching/listening to the actual hearings as I am not leaving my house until my Westie has her first litter of puppies. The criminal was represented by a multi-partnered law firm with prior experience in capitol cases and an excellent reputation. He was well represented but apparently White did not like the verdict. There was a preponderance of overwhelming evidence like the eight year old girl who watched the accused shoot her mother and other eyewitnesses.BTW, if you have any url's for that right-wing press to which you refer, will you please send them to me? -Caveat Lector- The "settled law" to which Ashcroft referred was the fact that the abortion laws were already on the books, ergo "settled" and not being currently debated. He enforced those laws without regard to his personal beliefs. Please present your proof of his perjury. If it is anything like your concept of what was being said with the "settled law" issue, I am not too worried about it. If any proof there had been, that pack of jackals would have been all over it. After all, the man has been in public service for 38 years. I think his record has been checked out a few times already. Amelia - Original Message - From: "Samantha L." [CTRL] Fw: Re: [CTRL] Ashcroft-The Artful Dodger
-Caveat Lector- Isn't this a shame! Ashcroft and his supporters have answered every charge and there is no proof of any of their claims. They are so frightened of this man because they have so much to hide. A letter was read today from the Archbishop of Washington recommending his confirmation and commending his work on behalf of people of all creeds and races, etc. but the race-baiting jackals continued their assault on his "rhetoric" and "views" as they distortedly assume them to be. Very subjective stuff with no basis in fact. They have distorted his representing the STATE in the desegregation lawsuit as though that were his personal opinion. The State of Missouri could not afford the $1.8 billion dollar plan proposed so that makes his a racist? His wife has taught at Howard University for the last five years. That is traditionally and predominately a black university yet the lies continue. He will be confirmed tomorrow whether these people like it or not. These Senators have far overstepped their authority as they are only allowed the right to deem a person qualified and of integrity. I never thought I would see a person so treated because of his religious beliefs in this country but consider the people involved in this character assassination. I was heartened by some of the speakers over the last couple of days. Sen. Bob Smith and Orin Hatch pretty well set the record straight and every charge has been answered. He did the right thing in regard to Judge White because of the heinousness of the crime involved. After all, sheriffs are our only elected law enforcement and deserve better. Ashcroft will probably not be the best attorney general ever but he is such an improvement over Janet Reno who was nothing more than an extension of the Clinton/Gore defense team! Little wonder she has FBI guards. I think the Democrats would have liked someone a little more "blackmailable" like Reno. One can never tell when they will need some more things swept under the rug. As attorney general, will he be as evasive with the truth? - - - - - - - - - - - - By Joe Conason Jan. 30, 2001 | Of all the perfectly sound reasons to oppose A HREF="http://www.salon.com/directory/topics/john_ashcroft/" John Ashcroft's/A nomination -- and perhaps to mount a filibuster against him, now that his confirmation appears likely -- the most compelling is that he didn't tell the truth to the United States Senate. In deference to the presidential prerogative, many senators may feel they should approve Ashcroft despite his ideological extremism; others may think they owe a former colleague the benefit of the doubt when he promises to enforce the law impartially. But how are they to believe that pledge, or expect the majority of skeptical Americans to trust Ashcroft, after he prevaricated so blatantly during his own testimony under oath? Two years ago, the Senate conducted an A HREF="http://www.salon.com/directory/topics/impeachment/"im peachment trial/A against a president who had lied about personal matters in a private lawsuit. Before A HREF="http://www.salon.com/directory/topics/bill_clinton/"P resident Clinton/A was finally acquitted because the majority felt his offenses were not impeachable, dozens of Republicans declared that such lying was unacceptable in the nation's chief magistrate. Why then is similar conduct now deemed acceptable in a candidate for the nation's highest law enforcement position? And why would the Senate vouchsafe the responsibilities of that office to a man who has already mocked its trust? The senators who vote to confirm his nomination this week will laud Ashcroft as a public servant of unblemished integrity, and such praise may be uttered by them in full sincerity. But to any senator who fulfills his or her own obligation to examine the hearing record completely and dispassionately, Ashcroft's dishonesty will be too obvious to be ignored. Almost nobody believes his evasive answers about the A HREF="http://www.salon.com/news/1998/04/10news.html"ambassa dorial nomination of James Hormel,/A for instance. Rather than admit forthrightly that he had blocked Hormel as ambassador to Luxembourg because the Clinton nominee would have been the nation's first openly gay envoy, Ashcroft chose to make vague claims about Hormel's "entire
