Nor whether it is *human* blood. The "miracle" of San Gennaro's blood must be
regarded as superstition, a living fossil surviving from the Middle Ages. No
wonder the level of church attendance has been plummeting in Italy, if this is
typical.

Naples Saint's Blood Liquefies, Citizens Relieved

 Updated 8:12 AM ET September 20, 2000

NAPLES, Italy (Reuters) - The substance believed by many Neapolitans to be the dried
blood of their city's
patron, Saint Gennaro, liquefied right on schedule Tuesday. Clergymen held aloft the
powdery substance in its
glass vial as thousands of the faithful gathered in the southern city's cathedral, and
after about an hour of
prayers they displayed the vial again, its contents liquefied.

The substance usually turns to liquid twice a year -- on September 19, the saint's
feast day, and on the
first Saturday in May.

Some Neapolitans, traditionally very superstitious, fear disaster may strike the city
if the blood of the
fourth-century martyr does not turn to liquid.

Disaster has struck at least five times after the blood failed to liquefy, including
in November 1980 when
some 3,000 people died in a massive earthquake that struck southern Italy.

Scientists have confirmed that the substance inside the closed vial is blood but
cannot explain why it
regularly turns to liquid.
