'Democratic' societies are usually authoritarian. In a democracy, the majority tyrannize the minority. A democracy can legalize slavery if the majority votes for it. Most modern democracies degenerate into oligarchies wherein the influential few manipulate the majority through a structured electoral process strictly controlled by political parties that in turn are controlled and funded by the influential few. The only guarantee of a free society is a Constitutional Republic that guarantees minority rights against the tyranny of the majority. That is why the US is supposed to be a constitutional republic - NOT a democracy.
