With the presidential elections just around the corner, rumors are running rampant in Washington that the Clinton White House is contemplating an "October Surprise" to enhance the flailing candidacy of Al Gore. Kenneth R. Timmerman of the Western Journalism Center suggested this week that the Clinton administration is hoping to negotiate a "package deal" with the government of Iran in time for the elections that would lead to renewed diplomatic relations, and give President Clinton a much sought-after "legacy" in foreign affairs. "If successful," Mr. Timmerman reported, "the deal would restore complete commercial ties between the two countries, allowing U.S. oil companies to invest in Iran and to buy Iranian crude oil while allowing President Clinton and Vice President Gore to claim credit for "resolving" the current oil crisis, all in time for the elections." He added, "To win the approval of the Iranian government - the main sticking point for the scheme - the Clinton administration has taken extraordinary steps to protect Iranian government assets in the United States from being used to compensate the families of victims of Iranian-backed terrorist attacks. In a series of successful lawsuits brought under a 1996 anti-terrorism law, the families have won awards totaling more than $1.6 billion against the Iranian government." Another October Surprise could involve the release of Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard. "Nowhere is Pollard's freedom a more sensitive issue than in New York, where prominent Jewish leaders have called for his immediate release," Mr. Timmerman reported. "They argue that Pollard was sentenced to life for a crime he was never accused of committing - and they are right. Pollard was indicted for illegally divulging classified documents to a U.S. ally, but at the last minute, the government introduced a still-classified damage assessment written by then Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, which accused him of treason. President Clinton has twice reviewed Pollard's case and refused to grant him clemency, at the urging of successive CIA directors. But Hillary Rodham Clinton, now a candidate for the U.S. Senate in New York, has called on the government to reopen his file and make public the charges against him." Of course, the timing of a potential Pollard release could seriously impact the New York Senate race. A third potential October Surprise, which was reported to me by a veteran Washington insider, suggests that President Clinton may feign an illness with only days to go prior to the election. This contrived sickness would permit Al Gore to sit in the Oval Office, allowing him to appear to be serious, solemn and the calming force of stability during such a rare crisis - just before the consequential election. (This is admittedly far-fetch and even I doubt Mr. Clinton would stoop this low.) Since this is the most unscrupulous White House in history, we should expect virtually anything from them as Mr. Clinton attempts to prolong his alleged legacy through the candidacies of Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Gore. I hope if the White House is foolish enough to enact one of these October Surprises that our fellow Americans will be able to see it for what it is - a desperate act by immoral and power- hungry leaders. STANDING WITH 'DR. LAURA': The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) is continuing their assault on Dr. Laura Schlessinger. Sadly, GLAAD and other homosexual-rights groups have convinced a host of advertisers to withdraw sponsorship of Dr. Schlessinger's new television show, "Dr. Laura," as well as her popular radio broadcast. The reason Dr. Schlessinger has been targeted by these groups is simply because she advocates Judeo- Christian values and is vocally outspoken against all sexual activity outside the bonds of traditional marriage. Presently, Dr. Schlessinger's television show is on hiatus while producers reformat it. GLAAD Executive Director Joan M. Garry said, "GLAAD hopes that the "Dr. Laura" hiatus is a permanent one, and that Paramount will disassociate itself from Schlessinger's messages of hurt and intolerance. Hiatus or not, GLAAD will remain vigilant in monitoring the program and working across the country with advertisers who are supporting the program. Schlessinger should not have been given a new platform for her campaign of misinformation and defamation of our community." GLAAD is presently seeking out two major advertisers - Pillsbury and International Home Foods (maker of Chef Boyardee foods, Gulden's Mustard, Pam Cooking Spray, and many other products) - urging them to drop sponsorship of "Dr. Laura." -Caveat Lector- Regarding the release of oil from the Elk Hill Reserve. This was a politically rigged scam from the beginning. The problem was intentionally created, so now the cure is to release oil from a "reserve" the government doesn't even own any more! They sold it to Al Gore's buddies at Occidental Petroleum. First, all the hype about the oil shortage. (Note the "shortage" was intentionally created when the Clinton Administration ordered OPEC to lower oil production to raise prices so some of these 3rd world oil producers could pay the interest on their loans to New York banks.) Then Al Gore goes around the country calling for Clinton to release the oil from the reserve. Now Clinton announces that he will. So Al looks like a real leader and a hero to those who were going to freeze to death this winter without heating oil. HORSE HOCKEY! The Elk Hill Oil "Reserve" doesn't even belong to the Federal Government anymore. They sold it to Al Gore's buddies at Occidental Petroleum. Nakano ___ " In addition to campaign contributions, Occidental has been a benefactor of Al Gore and his father for many years." The U.S. Energy Department sold Elk Hill Naval Petroleum Reserve to Occidental Petroleum on February 5. The 47,000-acre sale for $3.65 billion is the largest privatization in U.S. history. According to Reuters, Energy Secretary Federico Pena stated: "we are getting the government out of the oil business." However, did they do so legally? A coalition of environmental groups and First Nations challenged the sale in Federal Court, to no avail. The coalition including the Sierra Club, the Southwest Center for biological Diversity, and the Kitanemuk and Yowlumne Nations, sought a preliminary injunction or temporary restraining order. A federal judge rejected the claims February 3. The government wasted no time selling the land, originally valued at $1.5 billion. As of this writing, the judicial opinion is unavailable and the reasons for denying the injunction unknown. All that is clear is that Elk Hill Naval Petroleum Reserve is now the property of Occidental Petroleum. The land is regulated and Occidental still subject to restrictions. The Chevron Corporation previously acquired a 22% interest in the land, and is entitled to 22% of the oil extracted. In addition, the Endangered Species Act still prohibits the "taking" of endangered species by private landowners. They can obtain an incidental take permit provided they take necessary steps to minimize and mitigate the harm to the species. Harm includes habitat modification. Likewise, the National Historic Preservation Act provides some restrictions. Whether the government will enforce these restrictions is unknown. At least for now, it appears the government is out of the oil business. The question to ask now is whether the government is out of the business of protecting our natural and cultural resources all together. Lincoln Bedroom Sleepover for Gore Benefactor Surrounded by Questionable Coincidences By the Staff of Just Facts 9-22-00 In March of 1996, the chairman of Occidental Petroleum, an 18 billion dollar oil company, was an overnight guest in the Lincoln bedroom of the White House. (Remember - Elk Hill Naval Petroleum Reserve is now the property of Occidental Petroleum. Nakano) Two days after the sleepover, Occidental's Political Action Committee (PAC) gave $100,000 to the Democratic National Committee. In 1997, the Washington Post revealed that the Clinton administration created an exception to a law that stood in the way of a business venture that Occidental wanted to pursue in the country of Sudan. Further investigation has uncovered additional information on this matter. The Anti-Terrorism Law, Lincoln Bedroom and $100,000 In 1996, Congress passed and Bill Clinton signed what became Public Law 104-132. This law prohibits anyone in the United States from doing business with countries who are classified as state sponsors of terrorism. At the time, Occidental was pursuing an oil exploration deal with the country of Sudan, which is classified as a state sponsor of terrorism. There was a 6 week period between when Congress passed this legislation and when Bill Clinton signed it into law. It was during this window of time that the chairman of Occidental stayed at the White House and Occidental's PAC gave $100,000 to the Democratic National Committee. In addition to the timing of the sleepover and the donation, a 9 year review of Occidental's political contributions found the amount of this particular donation is unprecedented, doubling the size of any other donation they have made during this period. Here we go again. Another meaningless, who knew what, when charade, is providing pundits the opportunity to demand another "investigation". Dont go spending your money trying to figure this one out folks, its just more politics as usual. For the sake of argument, lets assume the worst. Let us assume that irresponsible, lose canons started the fire at Waco. We are talking about a situation that had deteriorated to the point of warfare, and as we all know, everything is fair and truth is always the first casualty. And regardless of whether we embrace or whether we reject these tactics, we also know that whoever is guilty in this case has gotten away with it, and it is not very likely that any amount of investigation will produce the truth unless the guilty parties confess. The evidence has produced no suspects and it is not very likely that any will arise in the near future. So what we have is a case where something has gone wrong and anyone can blame his or her favorite target. That is what calls for the resignation of FBI Director Louis Freeh and Janet Reno are all about. Louis Freeh is somewhat of a mystery man who is evidently serving the interests of some unspoken master. Janet Reno is an honest, intelligent woman, besieged by career Justice Department officials who evidently lie to her. The entire Waco mess sounds more like Whitewater part 2 than a genuine interest to get to the bottom of the truth about Waco. Once again, the attention of the Justice Department will be diverted, to give politically motivated bigots the opportunity to further erode public confidence in the administration of justice. Stay tuned, but dont worry, its just more of the same. Do not expect any justice any time soon. Let us give you a little hint about how to identify the difference between a genuine, bona fide investigation and a phony, politicaly motivated charade. A genuine, bona fide investigation identifies a criminal and charges him or her with a real crime. A political charade is what you hear when pundits demand th e resignation of honest law enforcement officials like Janet Reno. Now you know everything that you will probably ever learn about Waco. When sources of reasonable input are dominated by the incredulous rhetoric of Waco related hysteria, it is because the truth is routinely marginalized and vigorously opposed. John F. Kennedy Jr. had matured to the point where he seriously grappled with the elusive nature of declamatory nonsense, and his even handed input will be sorely missed.
