They may also be deluded into thinking that public display of a decalogue poster will bolster youthful morality, just because they themselves were strengthened against adversity by a picture of a kitten on a branch labeled HANG IN THERE. Fortunately, intelligence is only about 30% inheritable; so there's less than a 1/3 chance that one's kids will be as dim as their parents. In general, that is - specifics may vary. Smith Lilith Fair, a popular annual music event that has featured performances by more than 100 of the worlds most fashionable and influential female musicians and female-led groups, has directed a new spotlight on the mythical character who many feminists celebrate as the first wife -- and equal -- of Adam. Considered the first feminist, the raven-haired Lilith claimed equality with Adam because, as her legend commands, she was created from the earth, as was her husband. She was later thrown out of Paradise because she refused to be subservient to Adam. When Lilith realized she would never gain equality with Adam, she pronounced the Ineffable Name and flew away into the air, says one version of her tale. According to her pagan legend, Lilith then dwelled with the demons of earth, with whom she bore innumerable offspring near the Red Sea. Many years later, three of Gods angels, named Senoy, Sansenoy and Semangel, discovered Lilith and ordered her to return to Adam. When she refused, Lilith witnessed the execution of 100 of her children each day, causing her to go mad with anguish. As a result, she went on a killing spree, seducing and murdering her own demonic male offspring and then slaying their children. One Lilith legend suggests that she took on the personification of the serpent and made her way back into the Garden of Eden where she, not Satan, offered the fruit from the tree of knowledge to Eve. Lilith became a mirror that reflected Eves own beauty in addition to a forbidden sexuality that drew Eve to the creature. Lilith then seduced Eve and they became one woman. The Alphabet of Ben Sira, written somewhere between the 8th and 10th Centuries, is allegedly the earliest writings on Lilith. Other disciples of Lilith culture say her story is older. There does not seem to be much harmony in the varying Lilith accounts, allowing her followers to create new characteristics for her. Dozens of conflicting Lilith traditions exist, said Judy Weinberg of the Independent Jewish Womens Magazine. The Zohar, a book of Jewish mysticism, suggests that Adam originally manifested both male and female elements. One Jewish scholar has called him a hermaphrodite, and other mystics have also suggested he was a bisexual creature who was later sawed in two. While many early Jewish cultures used a Lilith symbol as a picture of promiscuity and disobedience, many modern Jewish feminists observe Lilith as a figure that creates an equality for women in the biblical story. So-called Christian Gnostics also embrace elements of Lilith. The Gnostics, said Stephan A. Hoeller, in a 1977 Quest article, share with the Hindus and with certain Christian mystics the notion that the divine essence is present deep within human nature in addition to being present outside of it. In astrology, Lilith is known as the Black Moon. Of course, the Lilith legend makes several fatal flaws. First and foremost is the fact that the Bible is the inspired and infallible Word of God. It was precisely breathed from the heart of God. To alter the content of the Bible in even the smallest way results in man attempting to create God in his image. This is the false hope of Lilith who has been concocted in order to create a politically-correct image of equality. This, sadly, is more important to Lilith admirers, than the holy promise of eternal life provided by God. Second, Lilith proponents allege that God believed he made a mistake in creating the first woman. Overlooking the obvious misconception of Lilith s existence, it is, of course, quite impossible for a faultless and virtuous God to make mistakes. Third, the legend of Lilith mixes the truth of the Bible with dark occultic teachings. Lilith followers have also suggested that Isaiah 34:14 actually mentions Lilith. The verse, in the King James Version, reads, The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest. The satyr is Lilith, say devotees of her myth. Fourth, Lilith proponents mix images of sex into the sacred spiritual relationship that God cultivated for man. Many paintings and depictions of Lilith present her in lewd poses, often times kissing a female demonic figure. The lesbian imagery has become quite synonymous with the legend.
