It also occurred among the Lubavitcher Hassidim, an ultra orthodox Jewish religious sect. Their spiritual leader died a few years back, and a large percentage of his followers were actively awaiting his return. This borders on idolatry in the Jewish religion, and they were told to drop it by every other denomination. They did. It's a simple psychological phenomenon really.
