Wow, a bit esoteric, but that definitely does work and is what I needed.

Have you tried to add to /boot.cfg the following lines (if drmkms is
used it will disable it):

 userconf=disable i915drmkms
 userconf=disable radeon
 userconf=disable nouveau

Is it possible to configure wscons (/dev/console) to 80x25 on a PC without
modifying the kernel?

I've tried a few options in wscons.conf as well as in boot.cfg but don't seem
to be able to change the mode.
